Videos for the week of November 1, 2009 – A Genius

b1471Today’s videos are about Daniel Paul Tammet (born Daniel Paul Corney, 31 January 1979). Daniel  is a British Savant  who is a genius in mathmaticsmathematical and natural language. He is the oldest of 9 children born to working-class parents in London. In his memoir, Born on a Blue Day, he talks about how having epilepsy, synaesthesia and Asperger Syndrome deeply affected his childhood. After a series of seizures he seemed to develop remarkable abilities that still astonish everyone who meets him. Unlike most Savants, Daniels is able to function quite well socially and scientist have been able to work with him in an effort to discover more about how the brain works.

This is a five part series. We will show three today and two next week. The reason I am featuring it is to let you see the possibilities of what the human brain can do. It is estimated that we use approximately 6 – 8 % of our mental ability and geniuses like Einstein used perhaps 15.%. Savants function at a much higher level; however this high functioning is usually only in one area of expertise. Daniel is gifted in two areas which makes him unusual.

I find these videos quite fascinating and I hope you do as well.
