The Power of Appreciation – Change Your Life With This Easy Technique

By Wendy Betterini -

Have you ever felt paralyzed by negative feelings before? Perhaps you felt overwhelmed by stress, overcome with anxiety, or filled with frustration about the many things that keep going wrong for you. And the longer you feel that way, it seems like the worse things get in your life, right?

There’s a reason for that, and it’s called the law of attraction. Your thoughts, feelings and beliefs magnetically keep attracting the essence of what you focus on the most. If you’re focused mostly on stressful circumstances, worries and problems, you can’t help but continue that cycle the more you focus on it.

There is an easy way to turn the tide in a more positive direction, however, and it’s so simple once you get the hang of it: start appreciating. Many spiritual teachers encourage a daily focus on gratitude and appreciation, and there is a good reason for that; it makes you feel better, and as you begin to think more positively and feel better, you begin attracting more and more goodness into your life.

There are different ways to start an appreciation practice, but here’s how I usually do it:

1) First thing in the morning, start appreciating.

The moment I wake up, I start focusing on something to appreciate. I appreciate the comfortable bed I’m lying in. I appreciate the soft pillows that support my head, the warm blankets covering me, the purring cat snuggled up next to me, and so on.

As I get up and start my day, I appreciate the hot water flowing from the shower head, the towel that dries me, the warm clothing I put on, my vehicle for taking me where I want to go – on and on, there are a million things to appreciate in life!

2) During moments of frustration, find something to appreciate.

You know those irritating moments during the day where you could easily swing from an okay attitude to a really frustrated, annoyed attitude? Like when you’re in a hurry and there’s a big traffic jam slowing you down. Or when you’re in the store trying to pick up a few things before you head home and there are long, slow moving lines at every register? Those times are perfect for shifting into an appreciative mindset.

Look around you and choose just one thing that you can appreciate. Focus on the reasons why you appreciate it, and within a few moments more opportunities for appreciation should come to you. Keep focusing on those, and within a few minutes you should notice that the situation you are in seems to smooth out – traffic begins moving again, checkout lines move more quickly, annoyances fade away.

That’s the power of appreciation!

Top Five Fun Winter Weekend Family Activities and Ideas

By Graeme Knights -

Winter can be a challenging season when it comes to thinking of things to do for the entertainment of families, kids need to get out and burn that energy off yet the seasonal weather is not exactly cooperative for hours of outside play. However there are many options for getting kids out of the house, from a trip out to a fun place for supper, to a romp in the snow. But what about winter weekends with the family? What kinds of things are there to do that everyone will enjoy this time of year?

These top five winter weekend family activities vary from active to passive pursuits and are sure to have something for everyone to enjoy, young and older alike. Like everything, some cost more money than others, so ideas to people on a variety of budget sizes as well.

1. Get Out of Dodge

On the more expensive side of things, families can take a break and head out of town or even the country on a winter vacation. If it’s winter sports that thrill your family, head to one of the family oriented ski resorts where younger children as well as adults can take ski lessons and hit the slopes. Enjoy an adrenalin experience in winter, the thrill and excitement of the days will ensure your little ones sleep through the night! If warmer temperatures are more up your family’s alley, a quick weekend getaway to warmer climes might be just the ticket to lift the winter doldrums and refresh you and your family.

2. Staycations

The going rage in saving money as well as learning about your local area is to stay home and explore the things that are around you that you never notice. Daytrips out around your local area can always discover some gems – winters fayres, visiting Santa claus, getting out to a rustic pub in the country. Or you can find indoor fun for the family, such activities as ice skating, laser tag or indoor play spaces to break up winter days and burn some of that endless kid energy.

3. At Home

If the snow and bitter cold wind keep you and yours from venturing out during the winter, plan ahead for movie marathons and crafting sessions. Winter weekend family activities do not have to be complicated, just something fresh and fun to do. New board games or video games can liven things right up without anyone getting out in the cold. Contests can be set up with the games, promoting lots of family fun, as long as you don’t get too competitive! Forfeits for the losers can be things like the washing up, that makes everyone get involved!

4. Get Outside

Bundle everyone up in your winter woollies and build a fort or an entire family of snowmen! Make your own village version of the Terracotta Army but out of snow! All the better when you come inside to warm up with hot chocolate and a movie.

5. Volunteer

A really great thing to do over the festive season. Something that you and your family will enjoy, but the people or the area you are helping. When the weather permits, take the family to the nursing home or rehab centre to talk to people who sometimes have very few if any visitors. Smaller children can draw pictures for them or sing songs. This sort of visit brightens many days for many people.

Alternatively, if you’d rather be outside, volunteer at a local park or National Trust area, there’s always lots to do that will get your blood pumping and ready to drop at the end of the day.

While winter time can be a challenging time for families, making a concentrated effort to plan fun activities and family weekend breaks will help keep the cabin fever at bay.

Teaching Children Appreciation

By Susan Joy Callender -

How do you teach children to appreciate life’s everyday things? Teaching your sons and daughters to merely say “Thank you” in response to gifts and acts of kindness does not teach them to fully appreciate something they have received. It does teach them to say those two aforementioned words, but without knowing the true meaning behind them. When you give your children the the verbal prod of “What do you say?” when your goal is for them to thank someone, that further diminishes their understanding of true appreciation.

Appreciation comes from the heart. Appreciation is kind and generous and involves the feelings of the party that extended the gift or kindness. Appreciation is unselfish. Appreciation makes the giver and receiver feel great — and that is practicing good manners.

When you say “Thank you”, you acknowledge that you are not alone in the world and that all you have comes from your connection to other people. Saying “Please” affirms that you need a connection to others in order to get what you want. The only person you never say please or thank you to is yourself.

As an instructor of adult and children”s etiquette and self-presentation skills, I know first-hand that parents can often appear a little too proud after prodding their child to say an often empty “Thank you”. Generally speaking, a child from age 4.5+ years should be able to make and maintain eye contact, say “Thank you” and state why they are grateful and thankful. If a child is old enough to participate in kindergarten classroom activities and play groups, she/he can express gratitude.

A child who communicates well in every way, yet refuses to express thanks and gratitude should not be allowed to keep a gift or accept the kindness that has been directed toward them. Ponder this for a moment. Being kind and considerate are the basic tenets of a polite society. Why would you allow your child to dismiss the efforts another person has made on their behalf? Each time a parent allows a child to fail in properly expressing appreciation a negative and undesirable behaviour is both learned and reinforced.

So how do you teach children to fully understand and express appreciation? You introduce it in a manner that is both fun and a challenge. Let’s face it, kids love games. They love to have achievable goals that they can measure independently. These lessons are no longer a daunting or exasperating task when you play the Appreciation Game.

I play The Appreciation Game with my students who receive private etiquette and self-presentation training and I also pass along this game to parents who are amazed at how their children’s skills in expressing gratitude seems to flourish as a result of playing it.

The Appreciation Game starts with the word “Thank you”. Make the prize for the first round something the child loves. I will use cupcakes as an example. Every time within a given day or set period of time that your child says “Thank you” without your prompting or prodding them they receive one point (or cupcake). There are endless opportunities to say “Thank you” in the course of the day. “Thank you Dad for making pancakes for breakfast. Pancakes are my favorite.” or “Thank you Grandma. I love the coloring book!”

If cupcakes are the selected prize and your child says “Thank you” eighteen times in one day, they will receive eighteen cupcakes. The great thing about using cupcakes or cookies for a prize is that your child will then be charged with sharing them with siblings, classmates and on play dates — preferably with people in their own age range. The catch is that whomever they give the cupcakes to must of course say “Thank you.” Through this exercise your child will see and value the importance of uttering a very simple phrase and how it feels when they do not receive a thank you in return.

Prizes may also include a penny, nickel or quarter for every time they say “Please”, “Excuse me” or play nicely with their friends within a pre-determined period of time, and deducting pennies, nickels or quarters for each time an adult conversation is interrupted. Interpret and adjust the game to include the biggest challenges you are facing with your children.

It is a great pleasure for me to witness the effectiveness of this game. Involve all adults in the child’s everyday life so your child knows that everyone is in on it and helping them reach their goal.

Learning to appreciate life, kind gestures, gifts and all that we receive as a result of our connection to others is a gift in itself. It opens your eyes to all that is beautiful and kind and helps you to determine whose company you want to keep. Kind, appreciative people are attracted to people with similar traits. It is without question the positive and fruitful path to positive, long-term, mutually beneficial relationships in childhood and throughout life.

The Power Of Belief To Change Your Life

By Susan Lebby Spector -

What I want to share with you today is a conceptual tool, which if you choose to use it, is guaranteed to help you make your journey through life, an easier, more effective, and more fulfilling one!

I am talking about harnessing the Power of Belief. Learning to unleash your highest potential with the power of your own mind.

You may well ask, how can what you believe be so important? Simply put, what you believe, for better or worse, will determine how you act and what you feel.

Interestingly, in many cases our beliefs about ourselves and our world have never been subject to conscious scrutiny. Much of what we believe has been handed down to us. From birth onward, our parents, families, friends, teachers, clergy, media, etc., give us countless messages about who we are, what we can expect, what life is like. Unfortunately, as children, we are not in a position to evaluate the actual merit of what we are being told.

The famous developmental psychologist, Jean Piaget, demonstrated that children do not develop full adult cognitive capacity until around the age of 12. This means that much of what we hear up to that point slips under the radar screen of our critical judgment.

That would be fine if everything that you heard came from truly wise, sensitive and loving people, who had no baggage of their own and were always looking out for your best interests. But which of us has not experienced someone, perhaps many someones, well intentioned or not, telling us so-called truths about ourselves? Which of us was told we were, too stupid to learn, too small to get picked for the team, too lazy to achieve, too selfish to deserve, too plain to attract, too flawed to love? The killer is, that like little sponges, we absorb those beliefs into ourselves with toxic results.

Ask yourself this, if you truly believed you couldn’t possibly do something, how likely would you be to even TRY it? Not very likely, right?

On the other hand, if there was something you really wanted to do, be or have, and you knew you had unlimited resources and COULD NOT FAIL, is there anything that would STOP you from going after it? If you’re like most folks, the answer is a resounding “NO”!

The only difference between the first scenario and the second is your own belief about whether or not you can succeed.

Webster’s Dictionary’s first definition of the word belief is, “Acceptance of something as true”. Notice that it did not say that a belief was something that WAS true, but merely ACCEPTED as such. BIG DIFFERENCE! It means that a belief is not NECESSARILY a FACT.

So a belief is really just a type of thought, an opinion, a view. It may be accurate, but it may have nothing to do with reality or truth. And this is important: neither its popularity, nor the strength with which it is held, is proof that it is a fact.

Let’s look to history for an example. In the 1400′s and before, the prevailing belief was that the earth was flat. Everyone knew that. You didn’t see a whole lot of eager sailors pointing the masts straight for the horizon line. They would have had to have been crazy or suicidal to do so. Now there was a guy named Columbus who had a different set of beliefs. Since his did not include falling off the face of the earth, he was willing to make that awesome journey.

How about the story of Helen Keller? A young girl rendered deaf and blind by disease at a very early age. As she grew older, she became increasingly wild and unmanageable. Her adoring parents were in despair. Their choice? Put her in an institution, a particularly frightful alternative at that time in history or try to find someone who could make her more docile, like taming a wild animal. Capt. and Mrs. Keller BELIEVED that that was the most they could hope for from their terribly impaired daughter. They believed it would be CRUEL to expect any more from her. In desperation, they hired a young teacher to come live with them, hoping that she would be able to help control their child. Her name was Annie Sullivan. Luckily, Annie did not have the same set of limiting beliefs about young Helen.

Now you’ve probably heard of Helen Keller. But in case you haven’t, here’s a partial list of some of her accomplishments:

  • She was the first blind and deaf person ever to graduate college. That was in 1904. And she graduated with high honors. From Radcliffe.
  • She won the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964.
  • She was elected to The National Women’s Hall of Fame.
  • She is one of the hundred most important women of the twentieth century.

And in the book, The 100 Most Influential Women of All Time, she comes in #18 and Annie Sullivan comes in at #19.

When you’re telling yourself what you can’t possibly do, and you believe that, remind yourself of Helen and Annie.

Einstein said “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking which created them.”

Nobel Peace Prize winner, Anwar Sadat said “He who cannot change the very fabric of his thought will never be able to change reality, and will never, therefore, make any progress.”

What are these men telling us? They are telling us when we are stuck, when we feel up against it, on a societal or personal level, that we must be willing to expand our consciousness and challenge our assumptions and beliefs – even our most dearly held ones.

Now I’m not beginning to suggest what it is you should believe, but only pointing out that you do, in fact, have a choice in the matter.

So here’s the technique I promised you: When you’re feeling stagnant on the job, unfulfilled at home, unsure of your place in the Universe, take some time and ferret out the limiting belief or beliefs that are underlying those feelings. Write that down. Then ask yourself the following questions, and write down your answers.

1. Is what you’re telling yourself an indisputable fact? (It rarely is!)

2. How well does this belief serve you?

3. Is there some other belief that would serve you better and What is it?

4. What actions would you take if you adopted this new belief?

Then take those actions and watch yourself soar!

You know there is a tongue in cheek definition of insanity that says “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. I’d like to propose a corollary to that, which says “Insanity is BELIEVING the same thing and expecting different results.

Belief is the mother of action! Choose yours wisely.

Appreciation and Kindness Heals, Bullying Kills

By Cynthia Willis -

Appreciation and kindness is an emotion of love. When one is appreciated it boosts the spirit and self esteem. When people show acts of kindness toward one another it produces a mental calmness. But when one is bullied it kills the spirit, as well as, one’s peace of mind. However, bullying is killing more than just the spirit today; bullying can lead to suicide for the person who is bullied. Unfortunately, America is beginning to see more and more cases of suicide amongst children who are bullied in school.

Everyone wants to be loved. Perhaps this is what the persons who commit ‘acts of bullying’ want too, but they do not know how to ask for love and appreciation. What leads a person or child to become a bully? In my opinion, jealousy is the major cause of bullying. I also believe bullies need attention that they may not be getting in their home environment. Perhaps bullies see characteristics in their targets that they wished they possess themselves. Sometimes it may be a preconceived notion of the other person’s personality or characteristic, such as, ‘she’ thinks she is better than me, this is why she does not say much to me. But in actuality the target is shy and keeps to her-self and does not say much to most people within her environment. But the bully takes it personal.

How can bullying be stopped? I think from the beginning, when a child enters school (pre-kindergarten or kindergarten) the parents or guardians need to be trained ‘how to teach and talk to your child about bullying and what to do if you are a target’. Then parents need to ingrain this into the child each day when they send or drop them off to school (e.g., Mary Sue have a great day in school, remember mommy loves you, and what do we do if we are bullied? And remember that it is not nice to bully others).

When my children were younger they were curious about God, maybe we should teach children to love everyone as if they were Jesus Christ or “do unto others, as you would want done to you”. So does this mean we need to put religion back into our schools? I do not know the answer to this question. But we are spiritual beings and we do need guidance.

What may stop bullying in the upper grades? Perhaps some mentoring sessions in school implementing social etiquettes, affirmations, and self-confidence boosting programs. These programs should be at least one time a week for twelve weeks and target children that may be at risk for bullying others. However, if other children want to enroll, they can do so, but first preferences should be given to at risk children.

Why Are Gratitude and Appreciation So Key in Successfully Using Law of Attraction?

By Warren Wojnowski -

If you’ve been a student of law of attraction for any length of time, you no doubt have heard about the importance of gratitude and appreciation in the manifestation process. All of the self help gurus have the same message when it comes to the role appreciation plays in your ability to deliberately use law of attraction and attract more abundance and prosperity into your life. Do you ever wonder if the advice works and if so, why it works?

I’ve spent a fair amount of time reading and experimenting around the topic in order to understand it better. I think I first heard about the power of gratitude from Abraham in one of their audios. The way they explained it, and I’ve come to understand this as truth, gratitude is a powerful way to bridge the vibrational gap between where you are and what you want (or where you would like to be).

As they explain, most of us find it difficult to shift our thoughts to a, say “level 10″ in vibration, if we’re mired in current thinking that is maybe, say a “level 3″. The gap is too wide.

But finding something you are grateful and appreciative for is much easier. So by placing your focus on things you have right now for which you are thankful, you are able to begin bridge the gap and begin to realign your thoughts to a level of vibration that move you closer to where you want to be.

Using this technique, you can shift yourself to, say a “level 6″ or a “7″ relatively quickly.

Both Abraham and Bob Proctor teach that in order for something to manifest, you must be a vibrational match to it. That’s where gratitude becomes such an important part of effectively and deliberately using Law of Attraction. It assists you in aligning our vibration.

And there’s more. There is a growing body of scientific and academic research that backs up the important role gratitude can play in living a happier, healthier life.

Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar is the head of the Positive Psychology program at Harvard University. In his book, Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment, Dr Ben-Shahar says that research studies now suggest the habit of keeping a daily “gratitude journal” can lead to a higher level of emotional and physical well being.

So the evidence is pretty clear that it works. If you pay attention, you will see the evidence in your own life. You can “measure” it by the way you feel. Focusing on the things you are grateful for makes you feel better — your problems start to feel smaller, you gain a sense of relief, and because of the relief you are able to shift your focus onto more things you are grateful for.

You are able to “feel” the power of gratitude at work within yourself and “feel” your vibration rising. And as that happens, you know you now on the path to using law of attraction in a deliberate way that best serves you.

Reasons Why Laughter Is the Best Medicine

By Waz Zaman -

You must have heard since your childhood that “Laughter is the best medicine”. But in the modern competitive world, man people hardly care about the saying and believe that laughter has no major role in their health. But such people do not realize that they are making a grave mistake until simple moments of life make them realize the same. Laughter has got a major role in maintaining good health including a healthy mind. Many believe that laughter only acts as a temporary source of happiness. But laughter not only provides us with a source of happiness but also keeps away many diseases. There are many diseases and adverse conditions such as stress, fatigue etc. where laughter works better than any actual medicine. Here are a few points to show how laughter is the best medicine:

1. A recent study by cardiologists proved that a person who has a habit of laughing frequently has a lesser chance of facing a heart attack. Laughter might not be directly related to prevention of heart attack but it reduces mental stress. And mental stress results in impairment of the endothelium, the protective barrier lining our blood vessels. This in turn results in a series of reactions that result in building of fat and cholesterol in the arteries leading to heart attack. So, laughter indirectly also prevents heart attack.

2. Laughter decreases the chances of a stroke. This is because of the blood vessel expansion during laughing keeps away the possibility of stroke.

3. Laughing is believed to be a good cardio workout which increases flow of blood by about 22%. Watching a comedy movie resulting in a good dose of laughter is believed to give body the same effect provided during a 15-30 minutes workout.

4. The respiratory system acquires more air during laughter which is good for the body. This is due to the expansion of respiratory valves during laughter. It also helps our respiratory tract clean. Thus, laughter is a very good medicine for our breathing mechanism.

5. It is proved that laughing helps to control sugar level in the blood. So, if you have diabetes then try to enjoy life and laugh everyday. Because only medicines cannot control these sugar levels at times. Laughter and happiness have also been proven to helpful for diabetes patients.

6. It is believed that a stress free body will have less diseases. Laughing helps to create a stress free mind. It is said that there is no tension during laughter. And a relieved and stress free body results in a healthy body more often than not. So, it is not easy for diseases to affect a person who is happy and laughs everyday. So, laughter tends to be a cost free medicine for all kinds of ailments.

7. Laughter has no side effects for sure whereas all modern-day medicines have got some side effects. So, we can laugh without worrying about any harm caused to us. Laughter can never harm us but only help us all the time.

8. Laughter is also proven to enhance the facial beauty of a person. Laughter results in movements of the lips and the facial muscles. It has been observed that people who have a good sense of humor and who laugh everyday also have a beautiful face. Due to the amount of facial exercise in laughter there is good amount of blood circulation in the face resulting in a glowing face.

A happy mind leads to a happy body and soul. And there are hardly many things that can result in more happiness than a genuine dose of laughter. So, try to be happy and laugh every day of your life. It will release all the pressure and make this world a lot better place to live in for you as well as for others.

Sincere Gratitude and Appreciation

By David Samuel -

There is a big difference between sincere gratitude and profusely saying thank you.

The difference is sincerity, and that affects how the giver feels about giving to you in the future. When you sincerely feel gratitude, then one thank you is enough, even a smile will do, but if you do not have that sincerity, the more you say thank you, the worse it appears.

It is not merely being grateful or appreciative, it is being sincere. If you think about any time you have done or given something to someone and the gratitude was sincere, compared to the times it was not, or no appreciation at all was given, you can recognize what we are talking about.

Now, if you do not know what true gratitude is, then it is difficult to understand this. The problem is that true gratitude is so rare that we do not have the examples to follow to understand what it is to begin with. We will expand on gratitude later in this lesson.

This brings another similar but different topic, that of knowing true quality. We can only know what is good by comparison, that is the law in this world of duality. There is no way to know good without bad. If we refer back to the lesson on the gullibility of humans, and bring that to the discernment of quality of all things, then we can begin to see the dangers of potentially if not probably being misled in our lives and search.

We can be so sure that we know the right thing or the best thing, but that is all limited by our own experience and so when you realize how small you are, or your experience is, relative to the whole planet, never mind the universe, you will start to develop humility if you contemplate and accept how little you actually know.

It is vital to distrust your intellectual mind, reminding yourself that it is not your true self and question all things. If you determine that you know something, then you stop learning. If you innocently accept something as being of high quality or of truth, then you limit your potential to that level. But if you are always questioning and doubting, then you will continually search for more and expand your being.

This is of course in relation to our search for our own self improvement, never use this as a means to judge another human being. It would be the same to say that you wish to acquire knowledge, both of things of the world and knowledge of your own being. If you do not know what you can do, then you cannot achieve it because you have no goal to set your direction. But if you have seen what a human being can do or be, then you have set a new target and potential that is possible for you to reach.

Another pitfall is the thought that all is just as it should be and everything comes in its own time. Perhaps for many things in this world, those things outside ourselves, giving birth to a baby, the opening of a flower, the ripening of a fruit, that may be true, but here we are concerned with the development of the full potential of our own individual being which we are the sole master of and set the limitations, or lack thereof.

If you accept that life will bring to you what you need and you will progress according to an assumed natural progression, so you do not have to work harder or put in any level of exertion, that breeds nothing more than mediocrity. If you are not satisfied with any part of your life, it is wholly up to you to put in continuing more and more effort to change and improve it according to the rules and manner of proven methods. That means you follow the rules of instruction exactly as they are given, not modifying them to suit your personal opinion. If you know so much that you can change the rules, then why have you not achieved all you seek?

Different Ways Of Saying Thank You

By CD Mohatta -

Thanking a person is probably one of the best appreciations ever. You cannot make a person’s day in any other better way than by thanking them for all that they have done for you. It is the best way to show them how much you appreciate and value them. In the following few lines, we will talk about different ways of saying thank you to your loved ones and to the people around you.

One of the sweetest ways to thank a person is by sending them gifts. Get them small little things that you think they will need and add a little thank you note to the gift. Chocolates, cakes, flowers and greeting cards are great options that you can consider. You can even opt for small little mementos that they can keep around in their homes and will remind them of you. Photo albums of the two of you can be gifted to someone whom you want to thank for their very presence in your life. If the person is really special to you and you want to really thank them from your heart, you can make them something instead of purchasing it from a shop. Poems, letters, texts, emails and voice mails are also good mediums that you could use to thank someone.

You don’t need to be as good as Shakespeare to use words to say a genuine thank you. If the feelings that you have are sincere and genuine, your message will surely reach their heart. Last but not the least, spelling it out to them is one of the best mediums you can use for a sincere appreciation. If you don’t like beating around the bush too much, walk straight up to them, look into their eyes and tell them how thankful you are to them. You just cannot do any better than this. Your message will reach deeper into their hearts than ever.

Who doesn’t like to be appreciated? It will only motivate them to be more sweet to you in future because they will know that you care. Be it your family members, friends, lover, boss, subordinates, colleagues, classmates or neighbors; even a simple thank you can make them feel very special. It will remind the people in your life that you have not taken them for granted and never will. Never ignore the power that genuine appreciation has over people. Use creative ways to appreciate and thank them for their presence in your life.

The Importance of Appreciation In Your Life

By Kimberley Cohen -

In your circle of friends, or amongst co-workers, or family members, or even from yourself, do you hear more complaining, blaming, criticizing and judging? Or, do you hear the appreciation for things and others in life?

Are you the type of person spreading thanks, cheer and good will, or are you contributing to your own or other people’s doom and gloom?

You can still appreciate life through all its ups and downs and twists and turns. Do you believe it? Are you able to do this?

All you need to do is take a look around you. Notice the beauty in others and all that surrounds you right where you are in this very moment. Try it.

Whether you are having a good day or and an off day, a great week or a terrible one, the importance of gratitude can lift your spirits and shift your mood, and, sometimes even those around you.

Let’s say you are going through a tough phase in your life right now – physically, emotionally, or in a relationship. Perhaps things aren’t going well financially or at work for you or with someone you know, or you may have heard or personally experienced some unsettling news. Appreciating the smallest of things can realign your vibrational frequency from separation to one of connection again.

Whether you are down in the dumps or sitting on top of the world, if you aren’t being thankful perhaps it’s time you start. You have nothing lose and much to be gained.

Right now, no matter where you are in your current surroundings or in your life, you can appreciate something or someone. Even if it’s only one thing today, that’s okay. What’s important is that you are appreciating yourself and something or someone every day.

See if you can hold your attention on what you are thankful for; really focus on it. Start with 15 seconds, then increase it to 30, and then a minute. Really feel it in your body. What are you aware of when you do? Notice how your energy and mood shift as you do so.

Alan Cohen said, “Appreciation is the highest form of prayer, for it acknowledges the presence of good wherever you shine the light of your thankful thoughts”.

You can shine the light of your thankful thoughts towards anyone or anything, and at any time you choose.

What and whom do you appreciate in your life right now?

  • You can be thankful you woke this morning.
  • You can appreciate your work and that you are able to work.
  • You can be grateful for your home, family and friends.
  • You can give thanks for your life just the way it is.
  • You can be grateful for your freedom.
  • You can value yourself and others.
  • You can welcome the unexpected and the lessons you will learn.
  • You can appreciate nature and all its splendor with each passing day and season.
  • You can let others know how thankful you are that they are in your life.
  • You can give thanks for being you.
  • You can appreciate your body and all that it allows you to do.
  • You can be thankful for all or as many of the 5 senses that you have.
  • You can value the vast diversities in this wonderful universe.
  • You can be grateful you are breathing at this very minute.
  • You can be thankful for the “things” in your life like computers, phones, clothes, buildings, planes, cars, etc.
  • You can be grateful for the food that nourishes your body.
  • You can give thanks for what inspires you to be the best you can be.
  • You can value your life and others each and every day.

There is so much you can appreciate right where you are in this exact moment!

The most important thing is to make time each and every day to appreciate what and whom is in your life.

When things aren’t going well for you or for someone you know, you might find yourself not wanting to be thankful or wondering how or why you should be at this time.

Acknowledge the feeling(s) and then remind yourself that you do have a choice of remaining in this mindset if you so choose. Or if you want, you can elevate and often alleviate these emotions by appreciating something or someone.

Go ahead, give it try. What do you have to lose?

Immerse yourself in gratitude each and every day and watch the miracles unfold around you as you do.
