Nothing is more appropriate for Valentine’s Day than Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poem, How Do I Love Thee? which she wrote for her husband. It describes unconditional love at its best. It is here in its entirety for your enjoyment from Songs of the Portugese:
Valentine’s Day is tomorrow. It is a lovely little holiday that’s been around since the Middle Ages or before. But, in my opinion, it’s another holiday run amuck. A day designed to express love has turned in to another commercial frenzy.
Almost twenty years ago I read an article in Reader’s Digest that has stayed with me over the years, and for someone who can’t remember what she had for breakfast, this is remarkable.
