Does Your Happiness Depend on Anyone but You?

This morning I was reading The Astonishing Power of Emotions by Esther and Jerry Hicks and came across a sentence that was like getting hit in the head by a 2 X 4. It read:

Asking others to change so you can feel better never works.

This was shortly followed by:

It is our absolute knowing that if you believe that your happiness depends upon your ability to control the behavior of any other, you will never find happiness – for control of others is not possible.

Everyone should not only read those two sentences but sit with them in meditation until the meaning sinks in. I don’t usually speak in “Everyone” and “should” but this is a powerful teaching and each of us needs to assimilate it – make it a part of our belief system. I believe that one of our biggest stumbling blocks is completely owning the awesomely powerful creator that dwells within us all. It can be very challenging to wrap your mind all the way around the fact that, EVERYTHING you experience in your personal life is your doing…no exceptions.You may say ” I would not have felt hurt if he hadn’t done blaa, blaa, blaa.” Or you might say ” It will possible for me to be happy when I have money, a healthy/fit body or the perfect relationship or the right job”.What I am getting at here is, that it will never be about fixing anything outside of ourself… never will that ever get you the lasting results you want. A man who was my teacher for a very longtime once said, to paraphrase,” If you want to be truly free, you MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY”. I totally agree…that is the only possible path to happiness. On Monday night I received a call from a phone surveyor in a boiler room operation for a political candidate and I found it to be a very interesting experience – one I wish to share.

It was one of those vague surveys with questions about almost everything and some very pointed questions about a few things that served the candidate. It was all about global warming but couched in terms that were wishy-washy and didn’t call it that. It asked about environmental issues and wanted to know where to point the finger. [Read more...]
