Appreciation: It’s a Wonderful Gift to Give

By Brenda Jenkins -

Nothing like a little “atta boy” to lift the spirits and make you want to do your very best for those around you. A little appreciation can go a long way and it’s a wonderful gift to give.

In our homes, things are a little more personal and most of us try to take plenty of time for our family to let them know how much we appreciate what they do. Show some extra care though this time of year and help out a little extra around the house. Make breakfast, or some other job, to give another family member a break from their typical routine. Be especially attentive to your spouse and family members. Hugs and kisses go a long way in many families.

There are also those colleagues inside and outside of your business who go out of their way to make sure that you’ve got what you need to get your job done. Among these colleagues could be your personal work staff, printers, distributors, delivery companies, caterers, couriers; anyone who helps to make sure your job is done well, and gets done on time.

It’s very necessary at this time of year to say, “Thank you,” from a sincere heart. We should let all of our colleagues know that without their hard work, great ideas and expertise, we would have been lost without them.

It may take a little character adjustment for some of us to do this for fear of gushing all over someone when you go out of your way to make your thanks known. It’s not “phony” or being a “brown nose” to show simple appreciation to those who have done well to make your job a little easier. Working in a little thankfulness with sincerity will often be reciprocated. Who among us really doesn’t love to feel appreciated and needed?

Let’s not forget those out of jobs, or in dire situations. Food banks and homeless shelters, in our city, are needing supplies more than ever. Give of your heart to donate time or money to those who really are financially stressed and burdened. A kind word, a soft touch, a look of understanding or just listening with care can be a great gift of support and comfort to those in need.

Take it upon yourself to give forgiveness and overlook the wrongs done to you by others. It only hurts you if you don’t. Put a smile on your face, plant some joy in your heart and know that you make a difference in this world. Show others that they do too. Appreciation is a wonderful gift to give.

May God bless you all and let His light to shine upon you.

Living Gratitude – 6 Easy Tips On How to Stay Grateful All Year Long

By Marie Cornelio -

I wanted to give you tools to help you stay grateful during Thanksgiving and Holiday Season and beyond. Gratitude has so many spiritual, emotional and physical benefits. I would love for you to experience them all. According to Miami University’s Dr. Michael McCullough and University of California – Davis’s Dr. Robert Emmons, being thankful is necessary for a healthy life style. Studies show that being grateful increases your level of happiness by 25 percent.

Being grateful is a choice. It’s about learning from a situation, taking the good out of it to help deal with the challenge. It’s about celebrating ” what is ” in life. It’s about realizing you have more power over your life and thoughts, emotions and energy then you previously imagined. You can stop being a victim of your circumstance and reach out for the joy rising in living. If you can open your heart to the good all around, gratitude can become as much part of your life as breathing.

Here are a few helpful suggestion to help you get started on your gratitude practice.

1) Keep a Daily Gratitude Journal This is probably the most effective strategy for increasing your level of gratitude. Set aside time daily to record several things that you are grateful for. You can write when you get up or at the end of the day. Pick a time that you will consistently have available. The important thing is to establish the daily practice of paying attention to gratitude-inspiring events and to write them down. My forthcoming book Gratitude-The Ultimate 21 Day Gratitude Journey to Happiness will be available shortly to help you keep a gratitude practice.

2) Use Visual Reminders Two obstacles to being grateful are forgetfulness and lack of awareness. You can counter them by giving yourself visual cues that trigger thoughts of gratitude. I like to use Post-It notes listing blessings in many places, including on refrigerator, mirrors and the steering wheel of my car. You can get as creative as you want you can even use your camera to take photos of what your grateful and put them in an album. Another strategy is to set a pager, computer or PDA to signal you at random times during the day and to use the signal to pause and count blessings.

3) Have a Gratitude Partner Social support encourages healthy behaviors, because we often lack the discipline to do things on our own. Just as you may be more likely to exercise if you have an exercise partner or participate in a class, you may be able to maintain the discipline of gratitude more easily if you have a partner with whom to share gratitude lists and to discuss the effects of gratitude in your life. You can join our community on face book called Gratitude- The Ultimate 21 Day Gratitude Journey to Happiness. “If you hang out with ungrateful people, you will ‘catch’ one set of emotions or energy; if you choose to associate with more grateful individuals, the influence will be in another direction. Find a grateful person or community and spend more time.

4) Make a Public Commitment When we become accountable and we make commitments to others we are more likely to follow through. Feel free to use our gratitude community on face book to make your public declaration or to post your daily gratitude. There is plenty of support.

5) Change Your Self-Talk We all carry on an inner dialogue with ourselves that is often called “self-talk.” When this inner conversation is negative, our mood is usually low. Research has shown that we can change our mood by changing the tone of the things we say to ourselves. Thoughts are powerful make sure to watch what you think about. Affirmations are great tools in reconditioning our thoughts.

6. Go On a Gratitude Walk Something about getting out in nature is healing research shows exercise can decrease stress and releases the” feel good “chemicals in your brain. Giving thanks helps you become centered, present and living in the moment. When you are grateful for the beauty around you automatically you will find more beauty to be grateful for.

I hope these suggestion help you. If you have not done so be sure to sing up for our newsletter and receive our free audio ” Living ignited with Self-Love and Inner Peace”. Namaste.

Showing Gratitude – Never Taking Life for Granted

By Alicia Isaacs -

Showing gratitude for your life can make the difference between taking life for granted and experiencing a fully enriched life full of joy and contentment.

Showing gratitude causes the seemingly simple things in your life to become magnified and appreciated. You begin to extract the joy out of every moment and every event in your life you encounter. In this state of gratitude, your vibration is elevated and you feel satisfied within.

Start with something small

If you feel like you have nothing to be grateful for, start with something small – at least something that you take for granted each day. When you lay in your bed express gratitude for a warm comfy bed that you could snuggle up in every night. How about your warm cozy blanket? And as you lay there, let your mind think about other people who have no bed, no blanket and send love and comfort to them. Say a prayer for them and feel your level of appreciation soar. This can be a very sobering exercise especially when we’re complaining about how bad things are with us. Take it a step further and share with someone in need.

Show gratitude to the people in your life

Now is the time to show gratitude to your partner, your children and your friends while they’re here with you. Don’t wait for when your children are all grown up to begin to show gratitude for even having them – although if you’ve never done it when they were at home, now is a good time to start.

Express gratitude to your partner, this may be the turning point in your relationship that’s needed to bring you both closer together. Decide what’s most important here.

Make gratitude a mindset and a lifestyle

When you make gratitude a habit you’ll see everything through the eyes of appreciation. Practice the habit of gratitude as soon as you awake every morning, throughout the day and the last thing before you go to sleep. A life filled with gratitude radiates joy and connects you to peace.

Whenever troublesome situations come look for the good even in its smallest form and shift into gratitude mode. You’ll learn to appreciate everything and take nothing for granted. Familiarity causes us to take things for granted after their initial excitement is over. However, gratitude brings renewed appreciation each day and helps us see the familiar from a fresh perspective.

Use Appreciation and the Law of Attraction to Tell a New Story

By Kim O’Hara -

You know that old story you keep repeating, in your head and to others? The same old tune that’s as worn out as last year’s slippers? And, about as comfortable, eh? What you’ve been repeating is likely full of past failures and present fears and limitations. It’s not serving you.

Dump that old worn out tune and create a New “Story” about your life and start repeating that, instead.

You might say: “How can I say I’m fine when I’m not?” Good question. The answer is in your focus.

Find something to appreciate, there is ALWAYS something to appreciate. For example, the sunshine, that you can walk or you can see, that you have a roof over your head, fresh water to drink. We tend to take so many things for granted, but there are many millions of people on this planet without clean water to drink!

So, latch onto those things you can appreciate right this moment. Take baby steps towards a greater appreciation of more in your life. Then you can start moving towards your desired future more easily.

If you focus on your fears or the bits of your past that upset you, that’s what your life will be filled with. Conversely, focus on what you want in life, on what you appreciate in life, and you get more of that! It’s the crux of the Law of Attraction.

So, how do you do create a new story?

It has several aspects to it, all have value. Let’s take a look.

*One is what you say when someone asks you how you’re doing. Do you trot out a litany of complaints or pretend all is well and lie to be polite or take some middle ground?

*Another is the speech you bring out for new people in your life, that one minute elevator story of woe and lack you may think of as your personal history. You all know what I’m talking about. What does yours sound like?

*A third is your “self talk.” What you are saying to yourself, inside, all day, every day. What are you repeating thousands of times a day to yourself inside your head??

It’s so tempting to complain, and so addictive, and once you get going, it can be almost impossible to stop the downward spiral. So, don’t get started, or when you find yourself getting started, catch yourself as soon as you can.

Sure those bad, negative, sad things did happen, but, why dwell there? Why focus on that? As Dr. Phil is known to ask, “How’s that workin’ for ya’?” If it’s making you feel more empowered and happier in your life, read no further.

If not, spend some time over the next few days noticing each area indicated above and how you handle them. Then, start creating a new script focused more on the positive in your life.

Start with just one area to change, and watch yourself, in this one area only! Baby steps. Just relax! Don’t get overwhelmed, it’s too easy to quit then. You could even start off with an easy area, to give you faster results.

“Spin” your current story to a more positive version! Find the gratitude lurking behind the complaints. Appreciate the tough times for how strong they’ve made you. Appreciate the valuable lessons you’ve learned from them.

Take it slow.

Every time you catch yourself reverting back to the old story, and you will, we all do for a time, simply reaffirm the new ‘story’ and move on.

It may take some time to make it sound real to your own ears. But change always feels a little awkward as it’s happening. There’s always an adjustment period for any change, even ones we look forward to.

Allow yourself the time to really feel good about this new ‘story’ that focuses on what you appreciate now, as well as your dreams, your desires, on what you want for your life.

Change won’t happen overnight. Keep at it. I promise you, you’ll feel better for it.

Gratitude Toward Others – Show Your Appreciation!

By Sheryl Schlameuss Berger -

Don’t you just feel warm, happy, even glowing after someone pays you a compliment? Whether it is “wow — your new haircut looks great” or “thanks for completing that project before the deadline” or “that new recipe you tried turned out so delicious” any recognition sends a radiant feeling right to our heart, validating us as a human being.

When someone makes a statement of appreciation to us we become enveloped in a good-feeling vibration. Our mood instantly lifts, sometimes a little and sometimes significantly. Of course, an authentic, sincere compliment is better than a backhanded compliment, and most of us are familiar with those (“that shelf you put up did not turn out as badly as I thought it might.)

Knowing that we feel so delighted and acknowledged by receiving compliments, we can translate that into a course of action for praising and recognizing others. The giving of compliments makes others feel appreciated, and comes back at us multiplied.

If giving compliments and praise is such a positive action, then why do we not do it more often? I suspect that most of the time we just do not think of it. We get involved in something else and forget to heap on the appreciation. Or sometimes we are too embarrassed to lavish the praise — it may make us feel too “mushy” or weak or emotional. Whatever reason, we often hesitate to say that “thank you.”

Find something positive to praise about a person, even a nuance about their behavior, appearance, skill, etc. and do not hesitate to pay a compliment. Thank those who help you in the course of your day (such wait staff, taxi drivers, people who hold the door open for you.) Be polite and offer an “I appreciate your service.” Of course, in terms of servers at a restaurant, whenever I have had superior attention, I always offer a “thank you for such excellent service.” The servers face never fails to light up at this. This should be backed up by a generous gratuity too! After all a “gratuity” is a monetary way of expressing gratitude with service provided.

Use every opportunity to show your appreciation — add a smile to it and you will likely get one in return! Make a point to show gratitude toward your friends and your friendship with be enlightened to a new depth.

Take the time to thank your family members. These are the people we most often overlook and take for granted. You can start with small statements: “Thanks so much for setting the table,” or “Many thanks for that gorgeous bouquet of flowers — it was really unexpected.” Work your way up to more general statements that carry emotional meaning with loved ones: “I appreciate your taking the time to really listen to me.”

For your spouse or significant other, let them know with “I am really happy to have you in my life ” or “Thank you for loving and respecting me.” For these more intimate appreciations, timing is definitely key. You will know intuitively when the statement will feel right — be in tune with those moments and do not them pass by without expressing your heartfelt appreciation. It can definitely improve your relationships.

When you say thank you or make appreciative statements, do so with enthusiasm and authenticity. Mean it and you will sound like you mean it — and the message will be received with clear joy. Showing your gratitude is sure to brighten someone’s day — as well as enrich your own life!

Affirmation, Attitude, Action statements for appreciation:

  • People treat me with consideration wherever I go, and it is easy for me to show my appreciation.
  • I am grateful that the kindness and respect I show to others is mirrored back to me.
  • I begin each day with the expectation of joy-filled, positive interactions with others.

A Rampage of Appreciation

By Irene Conlan -

Today on The Self Improvement Show we’re going to be talking about appreciation and it has me thinking about all the things I  have in my life that I appreciate and am grateful for. If you are a fan of Abraham-Hicks you know that they talk about “rampages of appreciation” and it’s the kind of rampage that we could – and should – have on a frequent basis. (I’m not much into “shoulds” but this is an important one.) This is one of my favorite practices because of the immediate change that takes place and the long term effects it sustains.

Notice the change that takes place within yourself when you take time to appreciate people and things that enrich your life. Before you start, notice how you feel, your energy level, your “mood of the day.”  When you finish notice those things again and realize the change that has happened.

I usually engage in a free-flow of thoughts, without structure. I just let my thoughts go from one thing to the next. So let’s do it.

Because Jack spent the night here last night I will start out with how much I appreciate my grandson. He always has a smile and a hug and often says things that make me smile and laugh more than usual. When he comes into my house it’s like the sun coming up right inside my living room and I appreciate his presence and I appreciate who he is. I appreciate children in general because they are so beautifully innocent, untainted by the cynicism of the adults and the worry carried by so many these days. I appreciate my neighbors – never intrusive but consistently looking out for one another and I appreciate my neighborhood where it feels safe and is within walking distance of everything we need.

I appreciate my family – so much that words just can’t say what my heart feels. Two amazing sons and three just-as-amazing grandsons.

As I look around my living room, I appreciate my lazy old cat who is so absolutely weird, an entertainment center in the shape of a cat.  She is so aloof, so demanding when her belly needs filling, so loving when she purrs up against me at night, and so insistent when she thinks its time to get up.

I appreciate the row of Match Box cars that lines the wall and the army men perched on the giant teapot I got in Taiwan and crouched in the nooks and crannies of amethyst crystal on the shelf. It means there’s play happening in my house and that’s such a good thing.

And in a rush of thoughts and words I appreciate having enough food to eat – delicious, wholesome food and sometimes decadent chocolate and ice cream. I appreciate clothes and shoes for my body, fresh air and sunshine, a car to take me where I need to go, the grocery store a block away that’s filled with everything you can  imagine. I appreciate  DVDs and MPs that entertain and bring music, and the beauty of flowers, and bushes and trees.

I am most appreciative of breath. Breath. We don’t think about it. Our bodies automatically bring it in. Without it we wouldn’t be at all. I am so very appreciative of breath and life, laughter and tears.

I appreciate being me and you being you.

Oh, yes. Now I’m ready to begin my day. It’s your turn. You do it and notice how wonderful you feel when you finish.

Listen to The Self Improvement Show. As I said, Mike O’Mary is going to talk with us  about appreciation and what he is doing to light the fires of appreciation for one another across the planet. We are going to talk about giving and receiving appreciation, so join us at noon today or come back and listen to the archives later. Keys to Happiness: No. 1 Self-Appreciation

By Michael Hadfield -

Appreciation, or rather the expression of appreciation, is essential for emotional health and well-being. Appreciation is a skill that we can all learn. But it has to start at home. It has to start with appreciation for you.

Appreciation of self may not come easily. I don’t know about you but I grew up with the sense that to ‘blow my own trumpet’ was a bad thing – something I shouldn’t do because I wouldn’t be liked if I did. Being liked was important to me – so I didn’t blow my own trumpet – ever. I also rarely felt good about myself. In my seeking to understand me I discovered that a powerful connection exists here..

If you don’t already feel good about yourself, and you seek happiness, then learning the art of self-appreciation is the key to unlocking the good feelings you’d like to feel inside of you. With that in mind I have some exercises for you to complete. I would like you to make a chart of your life. Write down a list of numbers that represent ages from 0 to your current age – one line for each. Then just allow your mind to drift over each of those ages briefly and note down anything significant to you in the way of a success, or an achievement – something you felt good about at the time, or you feel good about now. Things like starting school; passing some exams; getting a job; getting a job you wanted; kissing someone you liked; first-time sex; riding a roller coaster; taking a picture; first pay check; growing a plant from seed; eating something you’d grown; fulfilling a dream; healing. It really doesn’t matter what it is, it definitely doesn’t matter if the rest of world would see it as insignificant, what matters is that it was important to you and made you feel good, or excited, or happy.

Now when you’ve been over the list and filled in all the major events, look at the gaps and see if you can possibly find something to put on every single line. That’s a bit of a challenge I admit, and there is certainly no failure if you have big gaps, but you will find that as you move your mind towards thinking in terms of achievements and successes that more and more memories will come up.

Now, buy an expensive frame, and frame this ‘certificate’ of achievement and hang it on your bedroom wall. If you have a computer and like to play around, type in all the information and turn it into an impressive and attractive certificate and print it on some quality notepaper. As you look at it every morning and every evening and see just what a wonderfully successful person you are, you may find that any gaps will soon be filled as your mind switches its focus from failure to success. Pick one item each day, fetch back the memory, and fully appreciate the importance of that event in your life.

One other activity I’d like you to engage in is another simple exercise. At night, just before you drift off to sleep, I’d like you to wander through your day in your mind and find between 1 and 5 things that happened that day that you appreciate. It doesn’t matter how small these items of appreciation are. There is always something good in a day. If the sun came up this morning then that’s a good thing. If you put food in your mouth, and water in your belly – that’s a good thing. If you enjoyed the food and drink – that’s even better. If you saw a flower, or enjoyed its scent, then make note, if you were lost in its beauty for a moment – then that’s a miracle. If your car started, or your bus turned up; if you have a job, or lots of free time… if you took a breath and were still alive to enjoy breathing it out again… the list of ordinary, mundane, incredible things that happen to us each day, and that we take so totally for granted, is endless. Start to notice them and continue this exercise until you feel that appreciation and sense of wonder at the time you are experiencing the event.

Make this conscious effort to agree to spend a moment or two each day to express sincere appreciation and thanks for the miracles that exist around you and within you. Learn to appreciate the wonder of you, for none of these experiences could exist without you the Experiencer to enjoy and appreciate them. Your experiences are unique to you. When you experience joy the planet has more joy in it. By the simple act of appreciating those simple, yet wonderful, things that you experience, you will change your world for the better.
