Pay Yourself First! Putting Balance Back in Your Life

By Cindy Loughran -

Balance. We all strive for it. We want to feel at peace, and yet we live in perpetual production mode, trying to get everything on our “to do” list accomplished while yearning for ‘something more’. We tell ourselves we’ll slow down as soon as… (fill in the blank). To make matters worse, when we are always doing and not feeling fulfilled, we feel guilty and angry, increasing our anxiety and draining our energy. “Why can’t I do it all?” “I’m a bad…” “Why is everyone else managing better than I?” Sooner or later, many of us lose hope that we can ever slow down and relax. Instead of human beings, we become human doings. And at what cost? Our health, our relationships, and sometimes the very careers we’re putting ahead of our personal well being suffer dramatically.

Let’s examine this notion of balance. It’s not about spending the same amount of time in all areas of your life. It is about spending time doing things that balance your energy. When we spend our time doing things that energize us and those that expend energy we serve our universal human need for both achievement and fulfillment. When we do only those things that use up our energy, we burn out. When we are always relaxed and unchallenged, we feel bored. Either way, eventually, we run out of gas. When, however, we are engaged in things that are meaningful and purposeful, fulfilling our needs to accomplish and connect, we are refueled and experience higher levels of energy and ultimately, satisfaction. In short, when our bodies, minds and spirits are nourished, we are empowered to bring our best selves to our work, our relationships, our lives.

We can’t be the professional, parent, child, colleague, community member, friend we want to be if we don’t take care of ourselves. Intellectually, most of us know that. So why don’t we pay closer attention to our own well-being? Fear plays an enormous role in our sense of internal pressure to overachieve. We are afraid that if we fail to clear each new professional hurdle, we won’t realize our hoped-for success, leaving us disappointed, depressed and with a diminished sense of self-worth. The irony is that when we put off the things that are personally important to us, the things that restore our energy, we often allow our relationships and our physical and emotional health to suffer, and we actually increase the potential for career derailment and dissatisfaction.

So how do we begin to create balance in our hectic professional and personal lives? What is the solution to this work/life dilemma? Is it really possible to move toward balance? Yes! And while there isn’t a one size fits all solution, what is true for all of us is that, as with our financial investments, we should “pay ourselves first!”

Paying ourselves first in time, energy restoring activities and self care allows us to recharge our batteries and maintain our equilibrium. Paying ourselves first means carving out time to ensure our personal, physical and emotional well-being rather than waiting for that time to magically appear ‘as soon as…’  We might take 15 minutes of quiet time alone to charge our batteries so we can put in 10 hours of hard work; or a brisk 30 minute walk might clear our heads and allow us to come up with a creative solution to a problem that might take us hours to resolve if we labor over it. The possibilities are endless. We just need to discover and act on them. Failure to do so will likely leave us feeling run down, cranky and far less effective!
Try these exercises to begin to move toward your ideal work-life balance.

1. Create a vision. What is your life purpose? What are your priorities? What brings you satisfaction and fulfillment? What’s the legacy you want to leave behind? Picture yourself living in a way that is consistent with your vision. What does it look like? What does it feel like?

2. Examine the 12 areas of your life: Physical Health, Emotional Health, Finances, Relationships, Work/career, Home, Spirituality, Fun/creativity, Service, Family, Learning and Development, Appearance. In what areas are you highly satisfied? What could you do to increase your level of satisfaction in the areas where it is low?

3. Do a time management review: Keep a time log. Notice where you are spending your time. What are the things you are doing that are consistent with your vision? What things are not? Why are you doing them?

4. Dump, delegate, or decrease. Identify energy drains. Which things that you are doing now could you stop doing? Which things could you get someone else to do? Accept less than perfection. Don’t spend unnecessary time perfecting what’s already good enough. Identify things you could do less of, do less well or less often.

5. Be intentional. Carve out time to do the things that will help you reach your vision. ‘As soon’ as never comes, you have to schedule it! Honor appointments for these things as you would honor meetings with your boss (or other important person).

6. Examine your inner dialog including old rules and beliefs and absolutes. What old rules and beliefs are running you? “Good mothers/fathers/sons/daughters do….”, “If I don’t … I’ll…”, “Everyone else…”, “Good managers…” Some of these rules may be valid. And some probably aren’t. Eliminate the ones that no longer serve you. Notice your use of statements like ‘always’ and ‘never’ and monitor your self judgments about good (fill in the blank) and bad. Question their validity. Eat meatloaf for breakfast and eggs for dinner. Who says that isn’t right?

7. Learn to say no without guilt. You don’t have to do everything. Maybe it’s time to pass the torch, step aside and let others shine. Realize there are many ways to contribute without having it take over your life. Accept the fact that others will be able to do a good job, even if it is different than the way you would do it. Reframe guilt inducing decisions as conscious choices to focus on other aspects of yourself.

8. Develop a strong support system. Participate in professional and/or social organizations that give you energy and a sense of connection. When you feel stuck, ask others for help, advice or information. If you can afford it, hire someone to do some of the tasks you need to do but don’t enjoy.

9. Take impeccable care of yourself: your body, mind and soul. Eat well, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, exercise, spend time in the spiritual realm.

10. Reward yourself for small wins. Acknowledge yourself for what you have accomplished and the things you feel good about. Set positive goals for taking the next step rather than focusing on the things that are yet to be done. Consciously focus on the aspects of your day that gave you joy.

There is no one simple, cookie cutter solution to the life balance challenge. Your solution will be uniquely yours. Don’t compare yourself with others. Assess your own sense of achievement and fulfillment and adjust your actions according to your own needs. Do and be in ways that are an expression of your purpose and aligned with your highest priorities. You’ll find that paying yourself first by getting to the things that are personally important to you today gives you the energy to do more tomorrow.

Joy Formula – Keys to Living an Authentically Happy Life

By Tara McCausland -

Joy isn’t a word we hear very often nor is it something we feel as often as I believe we’re intended to. Joy is more than satisfaction or pleasure which are often dictated by circumstances out of our control. Joy is a conscience, daily choice to see the good in ourselves and the world around us meaning that we and we alone are ultimately responsible for whether or not we have joy now.

While joy is a choice, there are specific and practical things we can each do to increase the joy factor in our lives. This joy formula is: P (2) + B + S (2) = Joy (happy people)

Purpose! Clearly defined, passionate purpose is the fire that keeps our will to do and achieve burning. Knowing our purpose serves as a compass to help us determine what we should spend our time on in a world where everything is vying for our attention. Purpose will also help dissipate darkness and discouragement and keep us moving forward toward our desired goal.

Next is Positive Thought. Our thoughts are what determine our perceptions of ourselves, the people we associate with, and our environment. Our perceptions then become our reality, true or false – good or bad. Norman Vincent Peale said, “Change your thoughts and change your world.” Therefore, watch your thoughts. They are key to your success or the reason for your failure.

Balance! This is critical piece to having joy. Without it, our days are mundane at best and dreaded in the worst case. To increase balance, start with a healthy definition of what balance ought to look like in your life and your current phase. Next, prioritize and plan and make boundaries around your values. Learn to say no to some things so you can say yes to the most important things. Then, make self investing a priority. Reality is, unless you’re consciously and consistently filling your metaphorical cash box, when people come to withdraw from you – there won’t be anything there for you to give. Finally, adjust! Balance isn’t a static state. It’s all about adapting and shifting your weight according to your situation in life. The name of the game is to adjust when you feel your losing your balance.

Strive for personal excellence. Stagnate personal growth will stifle joy faster than your two year old can mess up the living room. On the other hand, continually striving for personal excellence physically, mentally, socially, professionally, and morally produces an inexhaustible source of joy.

Last but certainly not least is Service. Service is to life what yeast is to bread – that’s what really makes us rise! When we forget about our own troubles and help someone else, we are more easily able to find the good in life. When all else fails, serve!

We are that we might have joy – I truly believe that! As you work to integrate this joy formula, I promise that your days will be brighter and you will have the success that you’re seeking personally and professionally.

How Nutrition Affects Your Health and Well-Being!

By Hanieh Khosroshahi -

In order to be able to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight, prevent and reduce the risk of diseases, and improve your overall health, it is important to become knowledgeable about WHAT nutrition is, WHY it is important and HOW it influences the foods we eat and the different ways those foods affect our bodies. A nutritious diet will help achieve the above. However, it is essential to be aware of what makes a diet nutritious in the first place.

Nutrition is the study of food. It attempts to explain how food nurtures our bodies and influences our health. It consists of consuming, digesting, metabolizing and storing nutrients, as well as the reasons behind how these nutrients shape our bodies. We are usually aware of the definition of nutrition, though that is never enough. What we are not aware of and what we do not seem to understand are the factors that allow us to achieve the desired health and body weight we want. For instance, the amount of each type of foods we should be eating and the factors that have an effect on our eating patterns.

A nutritious diet results in the maintenance of energy and vitality. What contributes to the overall health of an individual is the proper combination of nutrients and energy. The following are the four characteristics that will make a diet nutritious:

  1. Adequacy- Enough energy, nutrients and fiber that is needed to maintain the health
  2. Balance- The combination of foods that provide the proper balance of nutrients
  3. Moderateness- Eating the right amounts of food to maintain a healthy weight and optimize the metabolic process of body
  4. Variety- Eating many different foods each day

Nutrition is one of several factors contributing to health. It is very important to become familiar with other factors that seem less obvious, but actually make a big difference in making your overall health complete. The following are the different branches of health, all of which are essential in order to reach a state of complete physical well-being:

  • Occupational health: Includes work that is meaningful, and vacation
  • Social health: Includes community, social environment, and family
  • Emotional health: Includes positive and optimistic feelings about life and oneself
  • Spiritual health: Includes spiritual values and beliefs
  • Physical health: Includes physical activity and health

Furthermore, our nutrition is of importance and the first step in attaining results that influence our overall health in a positive way is to become aware of the disciplines behind food and nutrition in general. In addition, a nutritious diet will help you lose fat and the continuance of it will help you achieve and maintain a desirable weight. www.Lose-weight-the-right-way.com provides a diet that is balanced, varied, moderate and adequate and will help you lose weight and keep it off!

Healthy Body – Healthy Mind!

bodybuilderBy Gary Ryan Blair -

More than two thousand years ago, Hippocrates, the Greek physician and father of medicine, said, “A wise man ought to realize that health is the most valuable possession.”

We are obliged to Hippocrates’ and others from the past for

reminding us that fitness and health is not just a new and passing phenomenon and neither are the ways to achieve and maintain good health.

The fundamentals of good health, known and proven for so

long, are available to anyone who decides they want to fully enjoy the enormous benefits of healthy living.

The reality of this lesson is brought home in the compelling story from over a century ago of an American boy, sickly and weakened by childhood diseases, who sought a refuge from his physical handicaps in a love of books and reading. As time went on, just as his mind grew strong from his studies, his body continued to fail.

His concerned father at last told his 12-year old son, “You have the mind but not the body, and without the help of the body the mind cannot go as far as it should. You must make your body know you will do it!” And the wise father then gave the boy weights and other gymnastic equipment and worked with him to strengthen his frail young body.

Well, this story has a remarkably happy ending. The boy heeded his father’s encouragement, and not only worked hard to rebuild his health, but became a superior athlete, graduated from Harvard University and went on to lead a vigorously active life of eminent achievement. This once-sickly boy eventually became the 26th president of the United States. He was Theodore Roosevelt, who at age 42, was and is the youngest man ever to become president.

Throughout his life, Roosevelt practiced what he called, “the

strenuous life.” His energetic commitment to physical activities

included boxing, horseback riding, swimming and hiking among others.

Teddy Roosevelt discovered that an important foundation for good

health is movement and activity. He demonstrated that our bodies are

designed to get stronger as they are constantly used and challenged

with purposeful physical activities.

Teddy Roosevelt, incidentally, was a great outdoorsman and probably

knew more about natural science than any other President who has ever

been in office, and some of his most notable achievements were in the

area of conservation. He added about 150 million acres to the

national forests, set up five new national parks, created the first

51 federal bird reservations and established the first four national

game preserves. He loved nature and worked to preserve the

environment for future generations.

Roosevelt undoubtedly agreed with Hippocrates view that, “The first

wealth is health.” And with the old proverb that takes Hippocrates

idea one step further by saying, “Health is better than wealth.”

Because Teddy Roosevelt’s life dramatically exemplifies the

life-changing power of achieving and maintaining good health. The

simple moral to his story is that nothing is more essential to

building a successful life than good health.

As Teddy Roosevelt showed us, the secrets to good health are not

complicated. They are known and waiting for you to discover them and,

most important, to put them into practice. The blessings and joys of

good health and fitness can be yours when you choose to make them

priorities in your life.

Good health, you know, means having the capacity to live life fully

and being able to experience the best that life has to offer. It

means having vigor and energy. It is having the ability to pursue

your dreams with the confidence that you will be able to accomplish

them.

It’s doubtful that Teddy Roosevelt would have accomplished much in

his life had it not been for the words of advice from his father

about developing his body in addition to his mind. It’s worth

thinking about, especially these days when so many of us live

sedentary existences. We can only go where our bodies can take us,

and our bodies need exercise to stay healthy and strong. So remember:

build both your body and your mind. They’re a powerful combination.

Teddy Roosevelt proved it.

Action to be taken: Commit to a firm set of health related goals and

get yourself in the best physical shape starting today.

Everything Counts!

Focus on Joy to Manifest Happiness

blue-butterflyBy Ali Bierman –

Whatever you focus on expands. To feel joy think thoughts that let you feel joyful. Simple, yes? Ah, here comes the challenge-you cannot think joyous thoughts now and then during the day. You must think joyous thoughts most of the day to live in a joyful state.

You want to continue this new behavior until you establish the habit of feeling joyful. Yes, living in joy is a habit you can create. What is so good about habits? You do them without thinking. They become automatic–operating out of your awareness.

Think about learning to drive a car. You had to learn how to start the car, shift gears, use the brake and accelerator, etc. You focused your mind continually, monitoring every aspect of making that car move and stop safely. You paid attention at 100%–no cell phone conversation, etc.

In time your driving became automatic. Now you just get in, start the motor and off you go. You can talk with others (cell phones still pose safety questions for drivers) and eat and still drive safely, right?

The same holds true for creating a new behavior. First you repeat it over and over until it becomes a habit.

The more you think and therefore feel joy in your life, the easier it becomes to stay in those thoughts and produce that kind of energy. Your emotions and muscles wire together. In fact, neural networks form “tying” together joyful feelings with joyful thoughts. Your physical body will also assume certain postures that get wired into those Joy Networks.

Every time you think, feel or perform an action that triggers part of that network, guess what-the entire Joy Network kicks into action! Soon (for most people that period is about 28 days) joyful thinking replaces your old habits that left you feeling crummy at worst and ho hum at best.

Twenty-eight days. Hmm. is your well being worth making a concentrated effort for twenty-eight days? You see, you will not have to wait twenty-eight days for your world to look different or for good things to happen regularly. In fact, that shift will happen the very first day you apply attention to how you feel and shift into joy whenever you slip away from it.

How to Improve Your Health at Any Age

marathon1By Mike D. Ross -

The rationale for regular exercise can be summed up in two sentences:

1. When you do something often, your body and brain get better at it.

2. When you don’t do something as often as you used to, your body and brain get worse at it.

We also refer to this idea as Adaptation. Your body is constantly adapting in response to the things you are doing (or not doing).

If you exercise regularly, the brain says, “He likes to be active. What can I do to make all this movement easier for him? I will make his heart and lungs stronger so they can  pump blood and oxygen to his muscles more efficiently. I will make his muscles stronger so he they can push and pull his body around easier. I will make his bones stronger so they can cope with the impact pressures he is experiencing. And I will make the brain coordinate with the muscles in his legs more effectively so he can be stable and not fall while he’s doing all of his activities.”

So if you want to get better at something, you just have to do it on a regular basis and your body will slowly adapt.

The problem for most people is that after age 60, physical activity steadily declines. Then the brain says, “He doesn’t need as much blood and oxygen to his muscles anymore so it’s ok if his heart and lungs get weaker. He’s not moving around nearly as much so it’s ok if his muscles get smaller and weaker. His bones don’t need to be nearly as dense anymore because he doesn’t put as much pressure on them as he used to. And he doesn’t put his body in situations where it needs good balance very often, so it’s ok if that deteriorates as well.”

Typically, after retirement, most people’s activity level gradually decreases, and after sending the above message to their body for ten or twenty years, one day they notice that they get out of breath going up the stairs, or the doctor tells them they have osteoporosis, or they notice they are feeling wobbly on their feet, and they say, “Guess it’s just because of old age.”

No. It’s because for the last twenty years, through their lack of activity, they’ve been telling their body that it’s ok to deteriorate. Their lifestyle allowed and encouraged negative adaptations to take place.

It would be nice if you could just tell your body, “Please be stronger.” Unfortunately, that’s not how it works. Your body doesn’t pay any attention to what you say, it only pays attention to what you physically do (or don’t do anymore).

So the big question is, what are you telling your body to do? Are you telling it to improve, or are you telling it that it’s ok to get weaker?

Here are three ways that you can start telling your body to improve:

1. Exercise your heart for 20-45 minutes 3-5 times each week by biking, walking, or swimming.

2. Strength train 2-3 times each week with machines, dumbbells, or bands. Do 1-3 sets of 10-15 reps for 8-10 exercises that use all the major muscle groups

3. Train your balance at least 4 times each week for about 10 minutes.

That will get you started. When you start exercising regularly, you are telling your body it’s time to start improving, and positive changes will take place over time, regardless of how old you are.

Finding Balance in Your Life

scales2By Debbie Bauer -

Have you seen the movie Bucket List? It is pretty inspiring. It’s about a couple of guys who decide to finally do the things they’ve always wanted to do in their lifetime. Lately I’ve been meeting too many people immobilized by what ifs and simply thinking too much. I am aware of the hard times many of us find ourselves facing with this depressed economy, however, I also believe some of us have created a black and white situation – meaning we see ourselves as either finding success or doomed to failure. Not necessarily an accurate perception.

Our minds have great power and can easily run away with our thoughts to the “what ifs” and negatives. I propose that there is a balance that each of us can find in our own mind. What we humans tend to do is panic and overcompensate – when we find ourselves in a stressful situation we hold on for dear life. I would like to suggest alternatives that might relieve some of that anxiety and stress.

First of all, I encourage you to reach for the stars – AND to keep your feet on the ground. That being said – balance is the key. Do your homework, check things out, then go for your “Bucket List” – take a risk. Don’t let fear immobilize you and keep you from taking those risks you’ve only dreamt about. If a storm hits – hold on gently – ride it out. If we hold on tightly – insistent and adamant – we only create greater stress – not resolution. Life is about speed bumps – hurdles – and amazingly enough they actually allow us to have a greater appreciation of our successes and triumphs!

So I offer you a few strategies when (and before!) the chaos of life slams up against your window:

  • Picture your mind as an “empty vessel” – let those negative thoughts flow through – do not try to stop them because they will only become more insistent. Acknowledge each thought – “yup, there you are” – then let it flow in and out.
  • Try keeping a gratitude journal – simply jot down the things in your life you are grateful for: your garden growing, being able to sleep in an extra 15 minutes, seeing a sunset – whatever – the simple things.
  • Most importantly – before you go to sleep each night – reflect on at least 3 good things in your life that happened that day. These can be as simple as not having to wait in line at the grocery store – to – your neighbor smiling or waving at you today.

It seems as humans we tend to focus on things that go wrong in our lives – the setbacks. That is often a natural reaction so be OK with that – and then – use the strategies suggested here to help yourself out of that slump. Breathe – acknowledge the situation – then step back and assess: is this actually going to trigger the end of my life? 99% of the time the answer will be NO. That is your reality check.

So in closing let me again encourage you to reach for your stars and remind you that in the midst of a crisis or hard time, it is best to take a deep breath and hold on gently. I wish you well and invite you to phone or email me should you or someone you know need some help getting over one of life’s hurdles.

I help people through difficult times in their lives. I help you shift from where you are – to a more manageable and enjoyable life – through the support of counseling sessions that access your strengths and resources. Balance Means True Health

scales1By Wendy Streater -

True health is not about how fit you are, or how much you weigh. True health is all about balance. In order for you to be truly healthy, you need a balance between mind, body and spirit. You will achieve true health when all three are working together in harmony.

Everyday you need to take a little time for meditation. You need to take the time to relax and let go of the chatter in your head. The food you eat is important as well as the amount you eat. There is a spiritual side to food and if you eat food spiritually, you will never become overweight. All processed food loses value as it is processed. The more processes it goes through, the less valuable as a source of nourishment, it becomes. Eat natural food, raw if possible, and you will find it more nourishing, spiritually as well as physically.

Your body needs exercise. It was designed for regular physical activity and if you go against the design, your body will not work efficiently. It’s surprising how much abuse the human body can take, before it breaks down, but without regular exercise, it will break down.

Yoga and Tai Chi are excellent forms of exercise. They exercise the mind and the spirit. Exercise doesn’t have to be rough and sweaty. You will get a lot of benefit from the stretching and strength building exercises of Yoga and Tai Chi, and they are great for relaxing, too.

Your mind needs work too. You need to exercise your brain as much as you need to exercise your body. Brain games, crosswords, Sudoku, or even just reading a book, are all good ways to exercise your mind. Health and harmony are not hard to achieve. Take a little time each day and before you know it, you will have true health.

Wendy Streater has been interested in natural products for over twenty years. After discovering some disturbing facts about the ingredients in regular household products, Wendy has set up a site http://www.naturallythebest.info devoted to informing everyone about the natural, affordable alternatives available.

There are a lot of things most people take for granted e.g., the government controls the amount of dangerous chemicals in toiletries and make-up. This is not possible, given the amount of new chemicals and combinations of chemicals developed every year. We need to take a proactive approach and look out for ourselves. http://www.naturallythebest.info

Your Life Wobble Board

By Duncan Richardson http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Duncan_Richardson

Last week, I offered a friend some help in building a jungle gym. Not your normal jungle gym from Costco or Home Depot, but rather a custom built one. The wife of my friend said, “Yeah right, when are you going to find the time to do that?

I’m not sure if I’ll ever be able to explain to this person why I have time to not only build a jungle gym, but build a jungle gym for someone else. On top of all that, what on earth does this have to do with Taekwondo? Ahhhhh… but, it has everything to do with it. [Read more...]
