People have several different definitions for the word beautiful. Of course, people never want to put each other down, but out of genuine human nature, insults are occasionally hurled at people by one another. Beauty is a word often used for skin care products and make-up. But what is beauty? My definition of beauty is when you can look at someone’s eyes and see them for who they are. For this reason, according to my definition of beauty, it’s important to keep the eyes healthy at all times. Here is how you can do it.
1. Eat carrots. Carrots are high in vitamin content that helps your vision. When you can see well, you don’t have to squint as much. Nobody wants to stare at someone that squints back at them or has to constantly be told what the makeup is of a far away object.
2. Protect your eyes from the sun. Wear sunglasses, in short. The sun can damage your eyes and hurt your vision down the road. More than anything, it can severely damage the skin under your eye area and make it age quicker than normal. You can also go about protecting your eyes from the sun by wearing spf formula to avoid sunburn. Sunburn is obviously bad for the skin anywhere on your body.
3. Apply an eye cream as you grow older. This will prevent and reduce the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes among other things. Eye wrinkles are awful-looking, and crows feet and other eye area impediments are also treatable with the best eye cream out there. Look for one with solid ingredients such as haloxyl and gaba, for starters. Both are powerhouse anti-aging ingredients and your eye area will appear more fresh with every application.

5. Sleep well. If you get a good nights sleep you will look rested and fresh in the morning. A good nights sleep is crucial to the eye area. A bad nights sleep can lead to bags under the eyes and eye puffiness. Of course, these can be treated with an eye serum, but why take the risk? Get a good nights sleep and you won’t have to worry about this as much.
Of course, stay hydrated. Water is the key to many health benefits in life. The same can be said for how it works on the eye area, including eye wrinkles.

When I was a little girl, I loved playing with paper dolls, making mud pies and playing dress up with my Mother’s clothes. I would sit for hours underneath the dining room table playing with the paper dolls that I cut out from the catalogs my Grandmother kept in a box underneath the phone table.

For years, print and broadcast media have defined beauty. There was a time in the not so distant past where voluptuous women like Marilyn Monroe, Mae West and Jayne Mansfield were the “hot” commodities. They were the pin-up girls who women wanted to be like and men drooled over. They were a size 14 or above. By today’s standards they would be obese women on the cover of tabloids with some horrifying caption. So, when did the standard of beauty change from healthy and curvy to unhealthy and straight? When did a woman having a boy’s body with breasts become the “hot” commodity? Who is defining beauty and why as a society are we buying it? It is time to change this way of thinking and honor our bodies at each age and size.
The Maiden’s body beginning to form and develop, flowing with creative juices as she begins to paint on the blank canvas of life. The Mother’s body full, juicy and ripe, ready to birth life in all forms, and the Crone, whose body carries confidence, wisdom and grace from a life lived. Honoring the wisdom and the curves of our bodies is a testament to true beauty. Embracing each curve, stretch mark and wrinkle is testimony to living an alive and full life.
In the last few days of my Grandmother’s life, I would sit next to her bed, holding her hands. She had beautiful hands. I looked at her hands and thought about the number of tortillas these hands made, how many quilts these hands made that are now warming her grandchildren and great grandchildren. I thought about how these hands worked on a farm and held her children, grand children and great grandchildren. I looked at her face and touched her cheek and thought about, how many smiles were on this face, how many tears streamed down these cheeks. I looked at my Grandmother and saw the beauty of a life lived. The beauty of a women who touched many lives, fed many people, cried many tears. At that moment, the size of her clothes did not matter, it was the size of her heart that defined true beauty.
In the end it is not the size of your clothes that matters, it is the size of your heart. Live from the beauty of your heart. Do not let a number on a tag define you, let the number of people whose heart you touch be the meter of true beauty.

So I asked an expert in the field to find some hands down solid solutions, Beverly Hills dermatologist, Stuart H. Kaplan, MD.
First Dr. Kaplan explained that most skin damage is a result of too many years exposed to the sun. I don’t know about you, but when I was 17 years old, I approached tanning like it was my most important beauty recipe. Roast top half for 45 minutes then baste in baby oil and turn to the backside for 45. Add a crazy foil dome to speed up cooking process. The result of this youthful tanning dedication now appears as dark patches of brown spots (or commonly referred to as age spots) primarily on our arms, neck, shoulders and hands. Sun overexposure combined with decreasing estrogen levels (which actually starts in our mid-twenties), makes our skin thinner and causes the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and veins to be pronounced. Great! That’s just great.
But have no fear Dr. K says your hands can be saved. He told me that there are a several solutions. Phew. First a few shots of Radiesse, a wrinkle filler traditionally used on your face which works to replace the lost collagen/fat in your hands produces fresh collagen. Radiesse injections will plump your hands up stat, adding the right amount of youthful volume. With that handled, Kaplan turns to the dark spot issue that is best-addressed using laser therapy. There are two basic types of lasers-ablative and nonablative. Ablative lasers actually vaporize the top layers of damaged skin. Nonablative lasers work deeper in the skin without removing or otherwise damaging the top layers. The main differences between the types of lasers have to do with wavelength. The only thing you need to know is that different laser wavelengths (colors of light) target different skin components and depths. Which laser treatment is best for your skin will be determined in a consultation with your physician. The fact is a combination of several different lasers is often the most effective way to address all of the problems that you may have.
As a general rule the best laser treatment for lines and wrinkles is a combination of skin resurfacing and skin-tightening procedures by a more aggressive ablative laser, such as a CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser or Erbium YAG. The CO2 laser can sometimes leave the skin lighter, so the Erbium Yag, combined with the fractionated laser (Sciton’s Profractional, or the Fraxel) has become the most popular laser for deep ablative treatment. The most-commonly used lasers for the treatments of age spots are pulsed dye, ND;Yag and the IPL lasers (such as the Sciton’s Broad Band Light or BBL laser). IPL and BBL lasers are less aggressive treatments that have little or no down time. Light-based treatments like LED photofacials are also options. Glycolic acid peels, cryotherapy and dermabrasion can also assist in erasing the ravages of time.
If you are not a fan of physician visits and fear the potential laser pain you can pick up a bleaching agent called hydroquinone, available at drugstores in concentrations of 2% to 4%. Kaplan suggests trying the hydroquinone along with a retinoid, like Retina A or Renova, which will exfoliate the skin and prepare it for the hydroquinone treatment. This may take a while so be patient. Some dermatologists, such as Dr. Kaplan, also have a compound prescription bleaching cream with hydroquinone 10%, along with Retinoic Acid and Hydrocortisone. This is usually the most effective topical cream for reducing melasma, which is the pigmentation on the upper lip and face, associated with pregnancy and birth control use. If you don’t want the hassle of going to the pharmacy nor have the funds for lasers, these can run upwards of $1500, there are some old school home remedies you can concoct on your own. On a daily basis our lives are busy with work, with listening to stories of heartache, with watching news stories of rape, war, with worrying about money, and with negativity of all kinds. We hear and see the worst and that spiritual part of us is injured or closes down. The airwaves are filled with music that speaks of hate and violence and our entertainment often spews epithets and criticism that do anything but make us laugh. After days and weeks of this we may begin to feel cut off from Spirit, cut off from what is meaningful. We may begin to feel as if we are merely existing rather than living fully. We are like a beautiful automobile with an empty gas tank and we cannot run until we are refueled.
There are two things that restore our souls quickly, that put gas back in our tanks: laughter and beauty.
In her book, Notes on the Need for Beauty, J Ruth Gendler states: “Beauty breaks us open and connects us to the hearts of others, the soul of the world, deepens our connections with the places we live and dream about, the people we love, animals and plants, trees and rivers. Beauty opens the door to creativity and wisdom.”
Beauty restores the soul and reconnects it with the Divine. It is said that “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” If this is true, we each need to find those things that restores us. That may be nature, poetry, prose, music, ballet, art, the laughter of children, a purring cat, a wagging tail of a puppy, or any of a thousand things that make your heart sing and your soul soar.

We are in the middle – on and above the surface of the earth and under the constellations. There is beauty under us and beauty over us. And, if you really open your eyes you will see beauty all around you on this planet.

Look at your own body – billions of cells all formed into organs which orchestrate perfectly to make you function. You may not like the size and shape of your body, but consider it – it is remarkable, magnificent, beautiful.
