Since problems with a person being overweight include diabetes and heart disease, it is vital that we make changes in our lifestyles to reverse this trend. Traditionally, when a person makes the decision to lose weight, it is typically starting a diet. If exercise is included, a membership to a gym is often purchased.

These are all good plans. However, they fail so often because it is too much drastic change at one time. Anybody can tough it out for awhile. But changing too many old habits all at once is overwhelming. Also, to get through a diet, a person may have thoughts of how good the forbidden foods will taste once the weight is lost.

If you’ve tried and failed and are afraid starting another diet will lead to more failure, here are some easy lifestyle changes you can make to help you get ready to live healthier and lose weight.

Television

As our obsession with television, computers, and video games have increased, our time spent in physical activity has decreased. Fortunately, fitness shows by health gurus like Jack LaLanne have been steadily increasing over the years. Wii fitness programs are the newest addition to exercise videos while seeming like a game. Although exercising along with these programs is a great step to better health, more is needed.

We must restrict television time to 1 to 2 hours a day. It is far too easy to hear something that catches interest on the TV and sit down to watch…just for a little bit. An hour later you’re still sitting and got nothing done. How many times have you been watching a favorite program and been influenced to eat because you saw a food commercial? Turn off the tube and use the time to organize the closet, go for a walk, garden, or do anything that gets you moving.

Processed Convenience Foods

Processed foods are loaded with fat, salt, and sugars. Additionally, the processing often destroys a large amount of nutrients and enzymes. Without vital enzymes we cannot digest our food and make use of the nutrients we need. When our bodies are not getting the nutrients we need, we start craving more food and overeat. Pay attention to how much processed food you are buying because it is convenient to throw into the microwave.

Modern microwaves are better at cooking a wide variety of foods. Some even have browning elements. Microwave cookware has also evolved solving the old problem of having parts of the food hard and parts uncooked. It is possible to cook fresh foods from all food groups in the microwave.

Family Structure

Our family lives are rushed and stressed. Eating habits and mealtimes have deteriorated and the consumption of processed convenience foods have increased. In the last decade or two, we have learned just how important traditional family routines are. Commit to making time in your schedule so you can gather as a family during mealtimes. Eating together gives families an opportunity to talk about their days and model to children how to eat more slowly and chew their food.

Choose two or three days a month to prepare snacks and meals ahead of time. Make fruit and veggie choices convenient to access and ready to eat in Ziploc baggies (to go on the run) or plastic containers. Cereals like Frosted Mini-Wheats, crackers, pretzels, nuts and raisins can be packaged in baggies (together or separately) for easy to go snacks. Try mixing meatloaf recipes, making hamburger patties, casseroles, and trays of enchiladas and freezing them raw. A main meal can easily be popped into the oven or microwave on busy days.

Lifestyle changes are difficult to make. People like to keep doing things that are familiar to them. It’s safe. If you make changes gradually, just one at a time, and practice the new habit consistently, you will find you are living a different lifestyle in a year’s time.

A New Year Gives You a New Chance For Better Health

As the year ends we know that some very notable people have had health issues the last couple of weeks. Brittany Murphy died after a short unidentified illness, Rush Limbaugh was rushed to the hospital after experiencing chest pain and Urban Meyer has taken an indefinite leave from coaching after two health emergencies. This time of year reminds us that our health is our most important asset and should be treated as such. Here are a few things you can do that might help.

Have your yearly physical. Many people feel they should only see the doctor if they are feeling sick. If you value your health and your pocketbook then spending a little wellness time with your doctor is worth it. Your physician will know what tests you need yearly. They may also see something you may miss such as mole that might look a little strange or a change in your skin tone. If you do not have insurance consider taking advantage of the local Health Department, these facilities can help you find affordable health care and inoculations for your children.

Invest in exercise. You do not need to join a gym. If you are looking for information about exercise there are some great places for free to learn more about it. Sparkpeople.com and Transformations.com are both free and have experts who give information on work outs. If you are looking for people to walk or exercise with try Meetup.com. They have many different groups and if you can not find one you want you can always start one.

Educate yourself. There are many great websites our there. WebMD.com, Livestrong.com and Lifescript.com are great sources for information from many different professionals. If you have questions it is always good to ask your healthcare professional, if they are unavailable a website where professionals are sharing information are great places to find generic information about medications, tests or conditions. Your local hospital also has educational classes throughout the year. Just give a call and ask for the community education department.

Create a healthy eating plan. This is one place where the internet excels and where it fails. There are more sites about eating, diet and food then just about anything else. The trick is to find the healthy information that does not cost you anything. Discovery.com has their yearly National Body Challenge that is free and has several perks including 14 day pass to Bally’s Health Club. Sparkpeople.com has a custom food plan that is free as well. Ivillage.com also has a food planner and program. All of these plans are based on a health balance food plan of 1200 to 1800 calories depending on the site.

This is just a starting point for the New Year. Each person has their own ideas about what they need to create a healthy and successful life. Just remember that the time spent being healthy will pay you back in ways you would not suspect.

Using Positive Self-Talk – How It Leads To Better Health

A large number of people are deeply concerned about their health and well being. Many of us want to learn more about diet, exercise, and nutrition in order to avoid illness and maintain heath and happiness. However, many of us commit the mistake of focusing too much on the needs of our bodies and neglecting the requirements of our minds.

To enjoy perfect health, we have to exercise a lot of self-control. Self-control is necessary in order to stick to a healthy diet and lifestyle habits such as regular exercise. We can achieve self-control through positive thinking and self-talk.

Self-talk and positive thinking will be of great help to you if you wish to achieve perfect health. Regularly practice self-talk and maintain a positive frame of mind. Self-talk, however, requires a lot of time and conscious effort. So, you will have to spare some time for it everyday.

Understanding Metabolism

Understanding metabolism is absolutely necessary if you want to achieve good health. When you know more about your rate of metabolism, you will be better able to maintain a healthy life style with a high level of energy.

It is easy to understand metabolism. First, find out about your rate of metabolism. Some people have high rates of metabolism, while others have slow rates of metabolism. If you are highly active, you will naturally have a higher rate of metabolism, and this is quite normal. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, you will naturally have a low rate of metabolism.

To solve problems related to low rates of metabolism, you need to eat healthy, with three meals a day, and exercise regularly. Exercise will help you burn the excess fat, and when you burn fat, your rate of metabolism rises.

If your rate of metabolism is high, you have to learn to get rid of the excess energy. Like those who have a low rate of metabolism, you too have to eat healthy to maintain yourself at a healthy weight. Healthy eating and regular exercises will help you maintain a serene frame of mind and normal weight.

The keys to a healthy body and a serene frame of mind are regular exercise and healthy dietary habits. In addition, it is important to quit harmful habits such as alcoholism and smoking. Take the following simple tips into consideration:

Eat only three inexpensive meals everyday.

Don’t drink any liquid in between meals, as it is not good for your health.

Drink water or any other liquid thirty minutes before and after meals.

In addition to following these simple techniques of healthy eating and exercising, practice the technique of positive self-talk and positive thinking. Before long, you will discover that you have achieved perfect health and happiness.

For Better Health- Listen to Your Body

So many of today’s maladies are caused because people just don’t listen to their bodies. They have headaches or joint pains or they’re tired all the time – and they look to a doctor to “cure” it without stopping to consult with the one who really knows what’s going on – their own bodies!

Some alternative health experts say that EVERY illness is caused by an allergy, and while I don’t have any documentation to prove it, I tend to believe it. If your body is continuously irritated by something, it’s going to react in some way. Just think about the warnings on pharmaceuticals – telling you that you should take this, “but oh by the way, it could cause cancer, or maybe death.”

The truth is, these drugs might well help one person and kill another – because one body was allergic and the other was not. We’re all different.

Several years ago we started seeing an excellent acupuncturist who practiced NAET – Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique. Through him we learned to do muscle testing on ourselves, so that if someone didn’t feel very well after a meal or after being exposed to some environmental substance, we could figure out what it was and treat it.

After a while, we became so in tune with paying attention to our body’s signals that we could “know” when taking the first bite of a food we should avoid.

And anyone can do that!

Just think how much happier you could be if you knew ahead of time that the fancy dessert in front of you was going to give you a splitting headache. Or if you knew that the orange juice was about to make you have a pain in your knee. That is, happier if you said “no” to them!

A Google search for Muscle Testing yielded plenty of results, including some from people who don’t believe in it. That’s fine – they have a right to keep their headaches!

What bothers me is that since this is so easy to do – and free – that more doctors don’t use it. A simple test in the office could tell them if you should or should not take a certain prescription drug. But, it isn’t something they can test and measure, so too many consider it unreliable.

I knew a woman once who decided to have an elective surgery. She was allergic to the anesthetic and she died on the operating table. I think her family would have been a lot happier if her doctor had done a test ahead of time and learned that she had that allergy. It was small comfort to them for him to say “I’m sorry – she was allergic.”

Even if you don’t try muscle testing – pay attention to your body. If you have a headache or start feeling “yucky,” stop and think about it. Write down what you ate, smelled, touched, and breathed in the hour or so before you started feeling bad. Then the next time it happens, do it again.

You’ll probably find a pattern and learn what you should avoid. And if you really pay attention, after a while you’ll be able to “hear” your body saying “Oh-oh, stay away from this or you’ll be sorry…”
