The Essence of Happiness

By Sam Borrett

All human beings are longing for happiness. Each individual could describe moments of happiness in their own words through different situations, according to their personal perceptions.

Imagine bringing all the descriptions of happiness of all these people together, fusing them in one and through an alchemical process extracting the essence.

What we would find could surprise us. The essence of the happiness is the state of being ‘one’ with oneself, or one with existence to be more poetic. Looking a little deeper into it, the level of happiness of a person is directly related to the degree of totality a person is able to experience the Here and Now.

Whenever your body, mind and soul are functioning together in rhythm it is the beginning of a movement towards real life, and a movement towards a change of a person’s chemistry. The change in body energy and a change in a mindset are more accurately speaking a slowing down of thoughts and a quietening of a noisy mind.

The important thing to remember is that whatever process is being used for the transformation of energy the basic fundamental is, whatsoever the method or meditation, it has to fill this requirement: that the body, mind and consciousness should function in unity.

Generally we have become too civilized as humans with little or no vitality, no energy – and when there is no energy, there is no joy. As we are presently, little energy is left over at the end of the day because we are usually divided in two.

5 Secrets for Optimal Health

By Teal Scott

Modern medicine has seen a lot of changes in recent years, but there’s still too much focus on dealing with specific physical ailments rather than preventing them. Learning to utilize the intensely symbiotic relationship that exists between the mind and the body can help you to maintain a healthy life. Here are five practical ways to achieve optimal health that your doctor won’t share with you:

1. Change Your Thoughts. The role of the placebo effect has largely gone unnoticed, misunderstood and even trivialized, which is unfortunate. The mind’s effect on the body (which we call the placebo effect) could be the single most important part of the healing process. Many people believe they do not have control over their own thoughts. This is not true. Changing thoughts, like anything else, simply involves practice. The things that tend to get our attention are things we do not like about our lives, or the negative thoughts, while the things that are positive about our lives go unnoticed. Change your thinking to one of optimism and gratitude. Consciously looking for things to enjoy, appreciate and be thankful for is enough to dramatically change the energy that you are projecting into your world, as well as into your body. Learn to recognize your negative thoughts and beliefs, and then replace them with thoughts that feel good to think. Soon, you will find you have let go of the thoughts that are standing in the way of your physical and mental health.

2. Stop Paying Attention to the News. We often get so familiar with our normal routine that we do not realize we are filling ourselves full of information that is not in line with good health. Many people get out of bed and immediately tune into the news. This ensures that you will start the day off on a negative foot. News, like any other business, must find a way to sell. Shock value sells. Negativity sells. It evokes a strong reaction from the reader or watcher that ensures it will get the attention needed to stay in business. The news paints an inaccurate view of our world. We often think that it is important to pay attention to “reality” and what is going on in the world, but the extreme and negative things that are going on, are not all that exists in our world. There are also (even more so than the amount of negative things) positive things going on every day. These are the things that don’t make for good headlines. When we hear or see something negative, but can’t do anything about it, it fills us with the feeling of powerlessness and fear. It helps form an inaccurate belief that the world we live in is one which we should be afraid of. We also form the belief that we can be a victim at any moment. This way of seeing the world is incredibly detrimental to all aspects of mental and physical health.

3. Eat for Health. You are what you eat. When you are in a positive mind set, you will find that you gravitate towards foods which are a match to your overall health. When you are in a negative mind set, you will gravitate towards foods which are not a match to your overall health. It remains true that physically taking steps towards health is no match for taking mental steps towards health. However, when you are nourishing your body with healthy things, it can definitely help you to achieve mental health as well. Realize that feeding your body in a healthy way is one way of showing love to yourself. Try to have fun expanding your palette. No matter what you’ve heard, healthy food does not have to taste bad, it can even taste better than unhealthy food. Deliberately look for restaurants with healthy options on their menus. Eat whole foods, fresh vegetables and fresh fruits. Eat less processed foods, and get help to slowly overcome your attachments to sugar, alcohol, caffeine and other “junk” foods. This should not be a stressful transition to make. The stress involved in dieting often only worsens the problem instead of solves it. So, set attainable goals and make the transition from unhealthy foods to healthy foods a gradual one. In no time, you will notice a difference in your energy level and your overall health.

4. Find an Exercise You Love to Do. It is no secret that regular exercise plays a large role in health. You are living life in this physical body, so… use it! You do not have to be athletic to exercise and it does not have to be a source of stress for you. In fact, exercise for the sake of exercise when you don’t enjoy it is detrimental to health. No one likes to force themselves to exercise. The way to get around the stress involved with exercise is to make exercise a part of something else you love to do. If you do not yet have a particular exercise you enjoy, you can start by searching for an activity that incorporates exercise which raises your heart rate for at least 30 minutes. You may try several activities before finding the one that really fits. Any type of exercise turns from a burden into a joy when you are focusing on what you love to do. For example, people who love being in water can exercise by swimming and because they love water so much, they will look forward to the exercise they are doing. The focus involved in a game of racket ball, for example, can make players forget the amount of exercise they are actually getting. Physical exercise can also be a great way to get out and socialize in the community. Exercising with other people makes the process of exercise not only easier but more enjoyable. A lot of people are looking for other people to exercise with. If you integrate exercise into your daily routine, it will lead to a longer, healthier and more fulfilling life.

5. Put out Into the World What You Want to Get Back. Simply put, you get back what you give out. We have a tendency to expect others to change the way that they are thinking and acting without realizing that the only person we can ever change is ourselves. The interesting dichotomy is that the minute you change the way you think and act, the world outside of you will also change. Begin to experiment with this by practicing random acts of kindness. Some good examples include: writing an affirming note with a message such as “you are worthy of all this life has to give” and putting it anonymously on someone’s car windshield or opening someone’s door for them. These simple activities empower you. They help you to see that you can make a positive change in the world. You will start to feel capable and proactive. The positive way you will feel as a result of doing this will reflect out into all aspects of your body and mind. You will begin to notice very quickly that you are being treated the same way you are treating others and there is nothing quite like a supportive environment to help you achieve your optimum health.

Taking steps towards your mental and physical health, along with making your health a priority, enables you to live the fulfilling and joyful life which you deserve to live. Your life is an open canvass. Enjoy it and make a masterpiece of it. Let your physical and mental health pave the way.

Step Into Your Greatness NOW!

By Prasanna Gunturi -

Knowing that life is a journey and we encounter obstacles, challenges and limitations on the way, we don’t expect a perfectly smooth ride. It seems that some of us are lucky and fortunate but for many, the ride is getting bumpier and bumpier. The cup of woes is overflowing…

The question that naturally arises is: how can one stay positive? Most importantly, how does one transcend the negative energy flowing around us, ready to suck us in?

Is it possible?

Yes, it is. If only you are willing to step into your greatness NOW. Yes, this very moment. All it takes is a decision, a commitment that you will no longer play small, that you will no longer feel hopeless and powerless. All you have to do is “just believe” that you have the power within you to change your life and of those around you. As you empower yourself and step into your greatness, you will empower others to rise and shine and step into their greatness!

We are not a machine. Nor a robot. Nor a supercomputer. We are a masterpiece. Compact, intelligent, self-governing. Perfectly designed and executed. A wonderful creation! We have in our possession, a priceless, powerful and anabolic powerhouse comprising of our body, mind and spirit. Caught in the world wide web of life, we have forgotten who we are and what we are capable of. It’s time to reclaim our true power.

STEP INTO YOUR GREATNESS NOW… in THREE simple steps!

Step #1: Respect your body and take care of it

“To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” ~Buddha

Our body is truly amazing! Trillions of cells. Organs. Organ systems. All working in perfect order and unison, coordination, collaboration and balance. Executing a zillion complex and extraordinary functions each day! And it all began with just two teeny-weeny cells?

Did you know that our body recreates itself every 5 years, that there is no single old cell in the body at that time? Yet, we hardly see/feel anything out of place? Isn’t it remarkable considering all that goes into a product release and upgrade – version control, quality control, design control, program and project management, enhancements, maintenance, delivery, production etc? To think all these take place so seamlessly and effortlessly?

There are people who take better care of their cars than they take care of their bodies. Love your body and appreciate all that it does for you to keep you in good health and shape.

Step #2: Get out of the box and tap into your intuition

Functionally, the mind can be divided into emotional mind, rational mind and intuitive mind. The rational mind allows us to think, reason, use logic, analyze. It helps us concretize an idea or an insight by applying rationale and logic to it, breaking it down into smaller and smaller units. The emotional mind helps us experience the emotion behind a thought.

“Intuition is the supra-logic that cuts out all the routine processes of thought and leaps straight from the problem to the answer.” ~ Robert Graves

If the rational mind is the analyzer, the intuitive mind is the synthesizer. It creates the big picture out of all the small details. It is that sudden flash of insight that makes everything crystal clear – you know it, you believe it and you can feel it with your heart. Logic and rationale come later.

Scientists say that we use less than 10% of our mind power. The mind loves to create patterns and rules from our past experiences and stores them in the subconscious. We create this imaginary box and our thinking is limited to what we have chosen to store in this box.

“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.” ~Albert Einstein

If Bill Gates stuck to logic and rationale, he would never have dropped out of the prestigious (and highly coveted) Harvard university and there would have been no Microsoft! And if a sixteen-year old Albert Einstein had not wondered what it would be like to travel along a ray of light, we wouldn’t have a great scientist and his groundbreaking theories!

Get out of the box and tap into your intuition! Because the intuitive mind is the gateway to the spirit, it is anabolic and inspires anabolic thoughts, emotions, actions and results.

Step #3: Connect to your spirit and partner with the universe

“We are not human beings on a spiritual journey. We are spiritual beings on a human journey.” ~ Steven Covey

Our spirit is our real essence. It is the same spirit that pervades this universe, the Infinite Spirit (some call it Universe, God, Higher Power), the source of all creation. It is the Infinite Source of Wisdom, Intelligence, Will, Creativity, Love and Abundance, an unlimited reservoir of anabolic energy.

We are all spiritual beings. Spirituality is not limited to only a privileged few. Neither does being spiritual mean renouncing the world, body or mind. It is staying connected to our core, expressing our true potential and living a life of fun, fulfillment, purpose, peace, love, joy, success and abundance.

“When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” ~ Paulo Coelho

The Infinite Spirit has a solution to every problem, has an answer to every question, has an opportunity for every challenge, has the power to turn every stumbling block into a stepping stone – for every aspect of your life, be it business, career, relationships, or life in general.

The laws of the universe (and nature) are simple (we have unnecessarily complicated and diluted them over ages), straightforward, fair, unbiased and anabolic. They apply equally to every person on this planet, irrespective of country, color, class, caste, creed, culture, religion, race, gender, age, role, education, qualification, business/organization or profession.

When you connect with your spirit, you are essentially partnering with the universe. The stars and planets align just for you. The words impossible and fear cease to exist… and you can accomplish what you want effortlessly!

Thinking About Thinking – And Other Things

By Nancy Swayzee -

So…when was the last time you thought about your brain. Silly question? I don’t think so. You can’t think without your brain, but one of the marvels of this extraordinary organ, is that you don’t have to think about thinking.

Now sometimes that’s not a good thing. Speaking before you think can be disastrous, and the whole purpose of meditation is to help us stop a lot of the mindless chatter that goes on…because without intervention, our minds are never quiet. The initial process of meditation is to “observe” our thoughts as they pass through (or circle around) our minds. Chances are you’re not even aware of most of the thoughts that come and go – return and then go again.

Why?..because we don’t pay attention to our thoughts most of the time. The fact is, we don’t pay attention to much of our life on a daily basis. In fact, Bruce Lipton, a cellular biologist who did pioneering research at Stanford University, author of “The Biology of Belief” and one of my fellow contributing authors in “Audacious Aging” writes, “Neuroscientists have found that the conscious mind controls our biology less than five percent. Ninety-five percent of our behavior and our choices are controlled by our sub-conscious mind. The sub-conscious directs what are called stimulus-response programs, i.e., “habits”. Habits free the conscious mind from having to pay attention”.

Ever get in your car to go somewhere, and suddenly realize you’re almost there and hadn’t even noticed how you got there? Yes!, We all have, and that is pretty scary. Where was your brain while you were driving…any idea?

Did you know that your brain is able to process over 1000 bits of information per second? How about the fact that those bits of information can be processed in 1/12th thousandth of a second? There’s more, the human nervous system (basically the brain and all its connections, contain as many nerve cells as there are stars in the Milky Way galaxy. OK, Let’s have some respect here! This is an awesome piece of equipment we have sitting on top of our neck. Would you drive your Ferrari or Lamborghini without paying attention to how it’s running? I think not.

So here’s another question…what do you do to take care of your brain? Wait, I need to back up here, you don’t see any brains running around without a body, right? The purpose of the brain is to operate the body.

A brain without a body has nothing to do…a body without a brain can’t operate. See the connection? So I guess before I ask what you do to take care of your brain is…what do you do to take care of your body?

You probably noticed my work is about the body/brain connection, so let’s explore the connection between physical activity and brain function.

Our physical body is designed to be an information gathering system, by way of our sensory receptors (part of the human nervous system). Our eyes, ears and nose take in the details of our surroundings and send the information to the brain to prepare us for action…to insure survival. Every square inch of our skin has receptors to keep us safe and comfortable. Too cold – you shiver, too hot – you sweat. Even our feet have nerve receptors in them to determine if our weight is evenly distributed. This is a natural “fall prevention” system that works hand in hand (or foot to head) with our vestibular system…the balance headquarters, so to speak. Believe it or not, our body even picks up changes in the air force between us and obstacles we are approaching. Haven’t you ever felt it when someone comes up behind you?

So why is exercise a good way to take care of both the body and the brain? Well, obviously that’s the meat of another amazing article about these two magnificent pieces of machinery, but cutting to the chase, exercise produces all of the things necessary for both of these machines to operate. First, there’s blood (of course), but blood is the method of transport for the primary ingredient the brain needs…oxygen. Ok, so you knew that already. But, the brain, which is only 1/5th of the body’s weight, uses 50% of the body’s oxygen. Bet you didn’t know that! Moving on, past all the other necessary hormones, neurotransmitters and fluids the brain needs to function, let’s go directly to acetylcholine. Ever heard of that? Well, acetylcholine plays a number of roles in both the Sympathetic Nervous System (fight or flight, etc.), but also is an important contributor to the Parasympathetic System. (I’m showing my esteem by capitalizing them.) It is the primary neurotransmitter for attention and memory, but it also does two amazing different things…it slows down the heart beat, but it is what creates the contraction of our skeletal muscles. It’s able to do this magic because the heart is its own type of muscle, very different from say, our biceps. Well here’s the kicker. Every brain chemical has to have a “receptor site” for these important chemicals to hook on to…sort of a docking station.

When a muscle contracts (because of actylcholine), it produces a special protein that is transferred to the brain to create the docking stations. (Confused yet?) Without muscle contraction, the protein isn’t produced, so no place for the actylcholine to go. With no receptor sites, the body assumes there is no need for actylcholine, so it quits producing it. Well there goes your attention span and your memory, let alone watching your muscles atrophy!

This is a non-scientific description of this process, but the connection is there. Exercise is necessary for both the body and the brain for more reasons than the average person knows.

So look at this article as a small section of the Care Manual that would come with that Ferrari or Lamborghini, and keep your eyes open for more articles!

Yoga For Beginners

yoga1By Darvin J. Hooey –

My article “Yoga For Beginners” is drafted to people like yourself who are interested in yoga, but not sure as to how to get started. I will take you by the hand and guide you through: 1) How yoga is defined, 2) Identifying the most best style for you, 3) Initial “tools” you might want, and 4) Getting Started. Navigating the world of yoga is actually not as hard as it might seem, if you have a map!

Yoga Defined

According to Wikipedia, Yoga refers to traditional physical and mental disciplines originating in India. The practice is associated with meditative practices in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Yoga for beginners is much simpler. Yoga is a sequence of positions and postures, coordinated with your breathing, designed to elevate your mind, body and soul. ultimately, as you go through the various stages, the result will be a sharper mind, improved fitness and, if you are a spiritual person, a stronger connection with the universe!

Yoga Styles

Yoga has 10 “popular” styles. However, the differences among the styles reside in the individual emphasis of the styles versus the poses or postures:

1) Hatha (Ananda): This style is characterized by a slower pace, personal affirmations, and self-control, versus an true workout. This is the best style of yoga for beginners.

2) Ashtanga (Power Yoga): As the nickname “Power Yoga” suggests, this is a more intense, faster pace form of yoga. This is not for beginners.

3) Anusara: This style is describes as “heart-oriented” and makes good use of yoga equipment. These classes are somewhat intense but still appropriate for all skill levels.

4) Iyengar: This style is characterized by a great attention to detail and a concentration on bodily alignment. Much more stamina is required for this style, as poses are often maintained for an extended period…not the smartest place for you to begin.

5) Integral: An appropriate style of yoga for beginners. This style focuses equally on meditation, poses and breathing, Integral is a more general style, like Hatha, that will expose you to the areas of concentration of the remaining styles.

6) Bikram (Hot Yoga): Are you ready to sweat? It’s called Hot Yoga because it’s performed in a room temperature of around 100 degree! This allows cleansing sweat to flow and muscles to loosen. Beginners pass for now.

7) Kundalini: Focuses on the release of energy through breath control and breathe/movement coordination. Sure why not.

8 ) Kripalu: This style concentrates on breathing and progressing at your own individual pace… a perfect style of yoga for beginners.

9) Sivananda: Among the larger schools of yoga, this style uses a more holistic approach, inclusive of diet, relaxation and thinking. Great option for those of you looking for guidance in areas beyond just fitness.

10) Svaroopa: You won’t break a sweat here. This style is more about raising your consciousness. This is absolutely appropriate for beginners, but not if your focus is improved fitness.

Equipment of Yoga

Here are a you might want to pick up for your journey:

1) Mats: You’ll want the extra cushion and support, even if your practicing yoga on carpet! Most classes are taught on hard floors, mats are a must for yoga, for beginners or experts!

2) Blocks and Straps: Are you lacking the flexibility to do the poses and stretches the same as the instructor? These help you to compensate.

3) Proper clothing: relatively loose clothes to allow greater range of motion. Long pants are help to prevent carpet/mat burns.

4) Training Videos; These may be in the form of DVDs or direct downloads from the internet, but they are essential, if you’d prefer to begin your journey at home. I’ve always practiced yoga in the comfort of my own home!

Get Started!

No surprises here… get started! This is what you need to learn yoga for beginners. Now go find a local class, or a good video. Final piece of advice… start with at home workouts and save yourself some embarrassment!

If you truly wish to succeed at being in the best shape of your life, here’s the best at home resource I’ve found. Go to Next Level Yoga immediately, to see how easily it can be done with at home workouts!

Life Balance – Mind, Body, Spirit

triangle1By Susan Birmingham -

The other day I was talking about how Triangles are the strongest geometric shape in the world. Its shape is very simple: a flat base with two sides that come together at the top to meet at a point. They are rigid, able to stand freely, and able to support their own weight. They do this against the forces of gravity.

A great example of the triangle’s strength is the Great Pyramid of Khufu in Egypt, built around 2575 BC, it is one of the largest surviving pyramids in the world today, WOW!

When we are balanced; mind, body, spirit, we are like the triangle, we are stronger and can stand freely.

Try this exercise, take a piece of paper and pencil or pen, on the paper draw a triangle.  On the left side of the triangle write the word MIND, on the right side write the word BODY, and at the bottom write the word SPIRIT.  Now in the center of the triangle write your own name.

The POINT is really three points (as a triangle has three points):

If you are NOT taking care of all of the sides; mind, body, or spirit, then you are NOT a triangle anymore – You are OUT OF BALANCE.

When one of these areas of your life is out of balance, in total you are out of balance and lose all your strength – YOU become vulnerable.

To be the woman you were created to be it is imperative to be in balance with all three; mind, body, and spirit.

Are you balanced in your life?  Are you a triangle?

If your answers are NO to both questions, then what can you start to do today to get back into balance? What can you do to get your body healthy from the inside out?  How can you de-clutter and clear your mind?  What are you feeding your spirit?

Create a list of what actions you can and will take to start your “re-balancing” program, enabling you to become a triangle and regain your strength and power.

Make action step #1 to post at least one step on your “re-balancing” program here!  I would love to see what steps you are going to take!  Have questions?  It would be a pleasure to answer them and I’m sure a help to all of my readers.

The Peak Performance Mind and Body

celebrateBy Robert Choat –

Like most other endeavors, peak performance starts in the mind. Sure, athletes need to be in top physical shape to be able to perform at their peak. But without the right mindset, peak performance cannot happen.

On the other hand, without proper nutrition and fitness levels, the mind cannot perform at its best. It takes both the mind and body to work together in order to reach a level of peak performance. With obesity levels at all time highs around the world, and especially in the United States, performing at peak levels will eventually fail. A recent UCLA study in neuroscience discovered that obesity actually shrinks the size of the frontal lobes of the brain and affects the memory centers too.

Let’s then start with getting into better physical condition, okay?

Just moving your body throughout the day and eating high quality foods will help in physical conditioning. In fact, doing both housework and gardening are great exercises. Both use the whole body. You’ll do squats, lunges, lifting, pushing, digging, and so forth in creating a lot of movement.

If you’re into doing regular gym type exercise program, then you can put yourself on a schedule of these bodyweight exercises: squats, pushups, pull-ups, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, leg raises, lunges, burpees, front planks, bear crawls, and crab walks.  In fact, they can be put into a circuit of 10-15 reps for up to 3 complete circuits. Doing that way, it’ll be challenging. You can start out at two exercises – squats and pushups. Do 20 squats and 10 pushups five times a day. Eventually you’ll work up to 50 squats and 25 pushups five times a day. The most important thing is to be consistent. You’ll reap the rewards.

When eating, keep in mind that eating high quality protein, fruits, complex carbs, and vegetables are important throughout the day. Drink plenty of water too. Make sure you eat a large breakfast, a medium lunch, and a small dinner. Have 2-3 snack-type meals in-between each meal. A secret of the Hollywood trainers is that they make sure their clients eat the amount of calorie needed for a person of a specific weight they’re shooting for. For example, if a person wants to get to 150 pounds, then they have to take in the calories based on whether that person is sedentary (1950), moderately active (2250), or highly active (2550).

The mind is important in both motivation and behavior in affecting one’s peak performance. Getting into a state of flow is the aim for mental peak performance. Flow state is when one is performing at their absolute best and time seems to move differently. Have you ever been so bored at doing something that time takes forever? Or have you been so involved that time moves fast? Doing specific activities in a flow state seems to slow time that performing it becomes easier.

Using mental training such as meditation, hypnosis, and visualization can aid in mental peak performance. Many athletes and business people have found benefits with these. Even first responders (police and fire personnel) have begun using many peak performance techniques. Deep breathing will help in alleviating stress and anxiety prior to a performance.

New technologies have been used in increasing peak performance. Among these is EEG Neurofeedback using video computer-based training. Studies at UCLA and the Veteran’s Administration have shown the effectiveness of EEG Neurofeedback in affecting one’s neuro-connections – thereby changing behavior.

Keep yourself fit – both mentally and physically – and you’ll keep performing at higher levels.

Cycle of Health – Mind, Body and Spirit

sunflower1By Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD -

In the Western Medicine paradigm of technology and science the primary emphasis is on the physical body and how to treat disease. Thus, Western society has become a society of sickness and disease rather than wellness. Physical health is one-third the equation for wholeness and healthiness. Western Medicine over looks the other two – emotional and spiritual.

The cycle of wholeness and health seeks to attune the person’s mind, body and spirit to the needs and messages of the body, as well as, to the natural means the body uses to maintain health. Similar to the balancing cycles in nature, such as the sun and rain nourishing crops, Ayurveda tradition observes the natural cycles of detoxification and rejuvenation that are ever present in the human physiology.

To maintain health, the body needs to rid itself of damaging and unwanted elements – [detoxification] and supply necessary nutrients [rejuvenation] in a balanced fashion. Through combining botanicals in a manner that promotes mild detoxification and cellular rejuvenation this promotes the natural cycle of body health. The result is the enjoyment of new levels of health and well-being in body, mind, and spirit.

By examining how an herb or fruit affects the physiology, Ayurveda establishes how different botanicals can affect the mind, [emotions], the subtle energies of the body, and ultimately the spirit. Ayurveda teaches that each area of health is interdependent.

To maintain health the mind [emotions] and spirit need to be nurtured and supported. The four most important rituals to create emotional and spiritual health is: Prayer, Meditation, Gratitude, Spending time in nature, including near fire and water.

Remember to be consciously aware of the role Spirit plays in your life. Spiritual health is created through being intimately connected to your spouse, partner, family, friends, and community, resulting in social health. Spiritual and social health, are interconnected. It is through your committed relationships that you will create the greatest opportunities for spiritual growth and for learning how to receive and impart unconditional love. Only love is real – all else is self-defeating.

Self-Care-Mind, Body, Spirit

blue-butterflyBy Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD -

One of the most important life enhancing activities one needs to give oneself is usually considered self-indulgence—taking care of one’s mind, body and spirit.  The majority of people take better care of their cars and pets than they do themselves.

Yes, we all do the obligatory items—brush our teeth, take a shower, use deodorant, comb our hair, eat three meals a day, exercise, hobbies, socialize and take vacations. However, the concept of taking care of one’s mind, body and spirit as a holistic system is a foreign concept.  Western society is entirely focused outward—focusing on our lives as a holistic system is considered for those who are self-indulgent, self-absorbed, self-centered people.

You deserve to take care of your mind, body and spirit as a holistic system and not just when you have a symptom that can not be ignored or when you have gotten a raise, won the Nobel Prize or have a six-figure income or more.

Holistic, Metaphysical, Energy or Mind, Body, Spirit self-care has existed since the beginning of time amid religious beliefs and practices, along with the mystery, superstition, fear, and misunderstanding. Holistic Healing is now becoming recognized regardless of what anyone chooses to believe or think. Ask almost anyone about their spiritual well-being and they will probably tell you, “Yeah, I am a spiritual person, I go to church frequently.” Therein, the confusion arises out of the association of healing with religion. The majority of people, including religious leaders, do not understand the difference.

Definition: “HEAL” 1. To restore to health or soundness, 2. To set right, repair, 3. To restore a person to spiritual wholeness, 4. To become whole and sound, to return to health.

Definition: “SPIRIT” 1. The vital principle or animating force within living beings, Incorporeal consciousness. There are about twelve more elaborations mostly to do with various religious implications.

Definition: “RELIGION” 1. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe, 2. A set of beliefs, values and practices based on the teachings of a religious doctrine.

Thus, based on Western philosophy common interpretations of how things ‘ARE’, many paradoxes are created. The resultant effect is confusion and un-wellness. The Truth, as Carl Jung and others have carefully worded in their writing, is this: Every Thing in the universe is Energy and Consciousness. How anyone thinks or feels about that Fact cannot change it. The purpose of All religions is the recognition that humans have a part of themselves that is not physical and there is a need to explore and experience this aspect of themselves. Part of the intent is to discover one’s purpose and to live in the best way possible. Another part of that goal also includes the attainment of Truth and Spiritual Wellness. However, the result of religious teachings with regard to our Spiritual health has been an abysmal failure. If the most important aspect of our being is our Spiritual self, and it has been neglected, it is a miracle we have existed this long.

Many churches are in a state of extreme confusion in an attempt to avoid accepting the “Truth.” The greatest struggle is how to incorporate all the now known knowledge and assimilate it into the religious dogma and theology. The problem is the impossibility of reconciling the obvious flaws in most theology and doctrine. The obvious shortcomings and how political and nationalistic and other special interests and agendas have resulted in a history filled with disappointment, tragedy, confusion and religious wars.
In many cultures it has always been thought and/or known that we are spiritual beings, the biggest exception is in western industrialized cultures that we believe we are people who happen to have a soul. Eastern philosophy believes we are a soul first, housed in this thing called a ‘body.’

The most beautiful and simple interpretation of how everything ‘IS’ can be found in the Native American tradition. “Everything in the universe is Spirit, each thing in it is of the same Spirit and it is all Connected.” This is exactly what we are beginning to understand in science and quantum physics, that everything in the universe is made of the same thing and has a consciousness about it. The two things that frustrate scientists the most is the fact that all these things operate across time, space and dimensions they do not yet understand, and the ability of things to operate on inter-dimensional and multi-dimensional levels. A high degree of new understanding about the science and physics of what spiritual really means is now mostly coming from independent researchers. High-tech and aerospace research physicists and scientists, all seem to have a more concise and accurate understanding of Spirit and the Spiritual than those from a theological background.

The Reality and The Truth of Spirit—In plain language, there is only One God or Universal Energy that Is Everything. There is only One Consciousness. We are only one individuated expression of The One. All the dogma, theology and religious beliefs anyone chooses to pile on this truth is commonly referred to as Bunk. It is the lack of true knowledge and the application of these distortions, which have been the source of all emotional, physical and spiritual problems. Spirit is alive, it is something that is lived and experienced, the surest way to destroy or suppress it is to organize it and institutionalize it.
Spiritual Experiences teach us: Everything we think or feel affects oneself and others. We need to realize every feeling—anger, fear, hate, sadness, judgment—are mind generated emotions and need to be modified or eliminated. Left to fester—anger, fear, hate, sadness, judgment, creates physical reactions. For every physical reaction, a.k.a. symptoms—i.e. colds, cancer, MS, and everything from A to Z, there is a direct link to mind generated emotions. When these mind generated emotions are eliminated and the wounds created from long term and dysfunctional expressions are healed, the physical manifestation labeled as illness by Western Medicine is eliminated.

The bottom line is Health and Well-Being in Western philisophy is affected by two factions—Doctors and Ministers. Doctors are trained as mechanics who work on the physical mechanism. They are in the Business of “Treatment.” They are Not Trained in the “Art of Healing”. Most doctors do not even understand the most rudimentary concepts of Healing. Most do not realize how they can produce damage and even induce death sentences on their patients.

There is little difference in the effects produced by an intentional damaging curse or a prayer prayed improperly, bad advice or simply some random negative thought. Ministers are trained in traditional theosophical dogmatic perceptions specific to the cultural religious views they ascribe to. Most people have little concept about True Spirituality or how the universe really operates. As a consequence they convey misinformation, half-truths, superstitions and fears along with a multitude of associated damaging information into a person’s consciousness. The result of which is Confusion and Paradox—which leads to distress, disease and un-wellness.

Both the good in our lives and the dis-eases we have are the results of our experiences, conditioning and beliefs. It is the experiences, conditioning and beliefs that are counter to our true nature that causes the damage. No matter how dire a client’s predicament seems to be, I Know if they are ‘Willing’ to do the emotional and spiritual work of releasing old habits, beliefs and forgiving, everything can be healed. The word ‘incurable’ used by Western Medicine really only means that the person can not be ‘cured’ by ‘outer’ methods and that they must Go Within to effect their healing. The condition was created as a way to cope—it came from within and can be healed from within. Reference: Heal Your Body, Louise L. Hay

Since Holistic/Metaphysical Healthcare focuses on supporting the Mind, Body, Spirit to heal itself as it is designed to do and Western philosophy perceives the human body as a battleground on which wars are waged with chemical bombs and scalpels against invaders, everyone is taught from birth to hand over their well-being and health to Doctors, Pharmaceuticals and Ministers.
