The holidays are coming on fast, and Christmas can be a magical time of year. There is so much to do and think about; from gifts you want to give, gifts you want to get, decorations for home and yard, and the food you want to cook and bake.
Yet there are many people out there that are very sad this time of year and need our help. So I came up with some ideas that you can do, to add to another persons holiday.
But before I begin the list let me say that if the holidays become stressful to you and you find yourself spiraling into that dark Christmas abyss, then it is time for you to find a way out.
“At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge,” said the gentleman, taking up a pen, “it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time…. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices.”–Charles Dickens (A Christmas Carol)
The best way to not think of your own problems is to give to someone else. If you are depressed, then bake some cookies, wear a cute costume and give them out to all your neighbors and friends. There is nothing better for the mood than to give of what you have.
Think about what you can do and how you can lift other people’s spirits. Make them laugh, make them remember childhoods and all the traditions that they grew up with. Go to a nursing home and talk to someone that has been on earth for 100 years and you will get your eyes and heart opened.
Also there is no better time of year or way to teach your children to be charitable and giving than to show them how to do it. I came across this idea and thought it magical.
In early December, have your kids go through their toys and make two piles. Ones they want to keep and ones they want to give away. While they are doing that talk about the importance of giving to people who have less than you. Then at the end when it is done, tell them now to pick three gifts from their keep pile and to write a note about the toy.
Christmas gift suggestions from Oren Arnold: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect.
So now to the list of things you can for others over the holidays:
- Invite lonely soldiers to your home for Christmas
- Send Christmas Cards to our soldiers stuck out of country
- Give to people in your neighborhood that you know are struggling, a bag of food left on the porch is sooooo fun.
- Donate the things in your home you do not use or need.
- Angel Tree is a ministry of Prison Fellowship. You bring smiles and messages of hope to the children of prisoners.
- The Holiday Project’s mission is to enrich the experience of the holidays by arranging visits to people confined to nursing homes, hospitals and other institutions
- Samaritans purse, Operation Christmas Child: A very unique project that is simple to do. Find a shoe box, fill it with toys and gifts and it will be sent to children in all corners of the globe.
- I’m sure we have all heard of toys for tots – Donate a toy to some needy child in your area.
- Salvation Army – Give where you hear that little ringing bell of volunteers standing proud in the cold in front of stores and buildings.
