Give Your Charitable Heart and Hand In Friendship This Holiday

By Corinne Bridgewater -

The holidays are coming on fast, and Christmas can be a magical time of year. There is so much to do and think about; from gifts you want to give, gifts you want to get, decorations for home and yard, and the food you want to cook and bake.

Yet there are many people out there that are very sad this time of year and need our help. So I came up with some ideas that you can do, to add to another persons holiday.

But before I begin the list let me say that if the holidays become stressful to you and you find yourself spiraling into that dark Christmas abyss, then it is time for you to find a way out.

“At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge,” said the gentleman, taking up a pen, “it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time…. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices.”–Charles Dickens (A Christmas Carol)

The best way to not think of your own problems is to give to someone else. If you are depressed, then bake some cookies, wear a cute costume and give them out to all your neighbors and friends. There is nothing better for the mood than to give of what you have.

Think about what you can do and how you can lift other people’s spirits. Make them laugh, make them remember childhoods and all the traditions that they grew up with. Go to a nursing home and talk to someone that has been on earth for 100 years and you will get your eyes and heart opened.

Also there is no better time of year or way to teach your children to be charitable and giving than to show them how to do it. I came across this idea and thought it magical.

In early December, have your kids go through their toys and make two piles. Ones they want to keep and ones they want to give away. While they are doing that talk about the importance of giving to people who have less than you. Then at the end when it is done, tell them now to pick three gifts from their keep pile and to write a note about the toy.

Christmas gift suggestions from Oren Arnold: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect.

So now to the list of things you can for others over the holidays:

  • Invite lonely soldiers to your home for Christmas
  • Send Christmas Cards to our soldiers stuck out of country
  • Give to people in your neighborhood that you know are struggling, a bag of food left on the porch is sooooo fun.
  • Donate the things in your home you do not use or need.
  • Angel Tree is a ministry of Prison Fellowship. You bring smiles and messages of hope to the children of prisoners.
  • The Holiday Project’s mission is to enrich the experience of the holidays by arranging visits to people confined to nursing homes, hospitals and other institutions
  • Samaritans purse, Operation Christmas Child: A very unique project that is simple to do. Find a shoe box, fill it with toys and gifts and it will be sent to children in all corners of the globe.
  • I’m sure we have all heard of toys for tots – Donate a toy to some needy child in your area.
  • Salvation Army – Give where you hear that little ringing bell of volunteers standing proud in the cold in front of stores and buildings.

Christmas is coming and it is time to look outside yourself and “Give from a charitable heart” For information on Christmas traditions, costumes, garland, mistletoe, trains, cards, ornaments and decoration go to => Xmas Stuff

Christmas Fun Facts – Discover the Christmas Giver Called Christkind!

By Bernadette Dimitrov -

Five hundred years ago, church reformer, Martin Luther wanted to shift the focus from St Nicholas as the gift bearer back to the Christ child. So in 16th-17th century in Europe, many Protestants changed the gift bringer back to the Christ child known as ‘Christkind’. The date of giving gifts also changed from St Nicholas feast day on December 6th, to Christmas Eve December 24th.

The traditional Christmas gift bringer in Germany and most German speaking regions of Europe is ‘The Christ-child’ also known as ‘Christkind’. This now popular gift bringer is depicted in areas of Europe such as Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, Croatia, Australia, Southern Brazil, some part of Hispanic America and Slovakia.

The Christkind in Germany is more often depicted as a sprite-like child with angelic wings and blonde hair wearing a white robe. Some presume Christkind to be the incarnation of Jesus as an infant. Often children like to leave a letter on the windowsill for the Chirstkind. Yet, children never see the Christkind. They are encouraged not to peek and try and see the figure arrive for if they do no present will be left. So the tradition is for parents to secretly ring a bell, which children believe the Christkind rings upon departure. Parents will always tell the children that the Christkind disappeared after leaving presents under the tree, just before they entered the room. It is a magical tradition.

There are many writings that suggest the Germans had a hard time getting their mind around the baby Jesus giving gifts so the Christmas gift-giver gradually morphed into a sweet girl. This sweet girl became known as the Christkind. Today, in modern Germany the Christkind is chosen every year in a contest. Usually a teenage girl, dressed in gold that is like a rock star complete with bodyguard, publicist and even her own entourage! The entrance of the modern-day Christkind is often marked by cheering crowds.

However, the appearance and name ‘Christkind’ changes from region to region. Here are some name variations that can be found for example: Christkindl, Christkindle and Christkindel. Another popular depiction of the Christkind is a fairy-like being with a crown on top of her golden curly long locks, dressed in a glorious gold and white robe. However, within some regions, the golden angelic girl is nowhere to be seen as the traditional ‘Weihnachtsmann’ or Father Christmas (better known as Santa Claus) is the bearer of gifts.

So depending where you are in Europe, you will see variations of the depiction of the Christkind. However, no matter where you are, this bringer of gifts is depicted bringing much joy and happiness.

Merry Christmas! Let it be a celebration of love.

By Irene Conlan -

I know it’s politically correct to say “Seasons Greetings” but I’ve never been known to be politically correct and don’t intend to start now. It’s Christmas. I say Happy Hanukkah to my Jewish friends and no one is offended. So Merry Christmas!

“Merry” isn’t a word we use much any more, just as the word “gay” is no longer used as an adjective to describe a happy state. Merry describes Christmas so well. It’s a happy word for a happy time  – a time of giving and receiving; a time when family gathers, sometimes happily, sometimes not so much. It’s a time the children wait for from year to year with wishes and hope of receiving that special thing that makes them soooooo happy.

For some Christmas has lost its meaning in commercialization. For some it’s lost its joy because times are hard and ends don’t meet. For some the loss of loved ones has left them feeling alone and lonely. Some just don’t believe in it and want nothing to do with its festiveness.

Regardless of your circumstances or whether or not you believe in the message of Christmas, Christmas can still be a time of joy. It can be a celebration of love. Not like Valentine’s day with it’s cards and candy and superficial sentiments, but deep love, real love. The kind of love that says, “I’m always here for you” and proves it over the years. The kind of love that looks beyond the exterior and says to your soul, “You are beautiful and I love you.” The kind of love that reaches out to the elderly and the children with kindness and brings laughter to places where there has been none. The kind of love that digs deep into a pocked that has little but still shares with someone in need. These things exist. Really. It’s a matter of seeking and finding. Take time to seek for it. It’s found sometimes in the most unlikely places. And if you can’t find it, become it.

Christmas is a celebration of  “For God so loved the world . . .”

That love bridges all gaps and levels all playing fields.

Merry Christmas!

Quantum Psychology and Ebenezer Scrooge Reveal the Secret of Happiness

By Jean M Boyd -

One hundred fifty years ago, Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol, which, in addition to being an entertaining ghost story, reveals deeper psychological truths. When the main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, goes to bed Christmas Eve, he is an unhappy, solitary, miserly old man. He wakes up Christmas morning – transformed. Instead of “bah, humbug,” he laughs joyously as he buys gifts, wishes people a “Merry Christmas,” and plans how he will help Tiny Tim, the handicapped son of his clerk.

Scrooge did not transform his life by talking about his problems or working on his “issues.” His transformation occurred while he slept and dreamed of four ghostly visitors. These ghosts are metaphors for what happens in real life.

The psychological insights expressed in A Christmas Carol correspond to the insights into personal growth provided by quantum psychology, which is a combination of Eastern philosophy and Western science. Perhaps the most revolutionary insight is that talking about problems does not bring about transformation but hinders it. Dreams are produced solely by the unconscious mind and just as we dream in pictures, fundamental change emerges from communicating with the unconscious mind in the language it prefers – pictures. When we do, the brain responds immediately.

Another shared insight is the connection between personal growth and higher consciousness. Scrooge’s first ghost, Jacob Marley, who is Scrooge’s deceased business partner, introduces the subject of higher consciousness. He warns Scrooge that success in business is not enough: “Man was my business, charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence, were all my business.” So also the changes that emerge with the practice of quantum techniques both improve our ordinary lives and bring about higher consciousness. For example we become courageous, enjoy life and have satisfying relationships; we also become compassionate, spiritual beings, which are characteristics of higher consciousness.

Ghost #2, the Ghost of Christmas Present, shows Scrooge the negative aspects of his present life. So also Quantum Technique #1uses the “negative feedback” of our current problems, such as job stress, to stimulate rapid personal growth.

Shades of Sigmund Freud, Ghost #3, the Ghost of Christmas Past, shows Scrooge scenes from his youth. So also quantum techniques free us from the past, both our traumatic personal experiences and the beliefs and concepts about life we acquired from our cultural indoctrination, which is a form of brain washing.

The last ghost is the Ghost of Christmas Future, who gives Scrooge a preview of what his future will look like – if nothing changes. Based on the basic principle that we only get what we ask for, although not always, quantum techniques require us to look to the future and choose what changes we want to make in ourselves and our lives.

Scrooge and quantum psychology reveal that the secret of your happiness lies within you, specifically within your unconscious mind, which contains a personal-growth learning program that knows how to transform your life- with a little help from you.

Since childhood, Jean’s quest has been the search for knowledge, which is synonymous with power. Her intent is to empower individuals looking to jump start their psychological evolution and achieve higher consciousness. Her book, The Greatest Escape: Travel the Quantum Path to Personal Freedom, providers readers with the theory underlying two quantum personal growth techniques, which produce immediate results, without talking about problems. Plenty of colorful pictures enhance the learning and make the book fun to read. More information can be found at http://www.quantumboyd.com

3 Natural Remedies for Anxiety Relief During the Holiday Season

By Steve A. Matthews -

Why are the holidays, especially the Christmas season, loaded with stress? Doesn’t it seem that the hustle and bustle of the shopping season, scrambling to find that perfect gift, cause more people to be anxious?

Can you find natural remedies for anxiety that really work during this time, without resorting to high-cost pharmaceuticals with unpleasant side effects?

This article will outline three problems of the holidays natural ways that you can handle the symptoms of stress and reduce anxiety so that your holiday season will be peaceful and enjoyable. That being said, if you have a serious medical condition that requires prescribed medicine, make sure to follow your doctor’s orders.

Before talking about remedies, let’s spend a little time talking about three main reasons why anxiety symptoms surface so dramatically during the holiday season.

1. High Expectations of “The Perfect Gift”
Let’s face it. When Christmas becomes commercial, it is easy to base your self-worth on the opinions of what others think. You can do that in two ways – the gifts that you expect from others and the gifts that others expect from you. Both of those expectations cause stress and anxiety in shopping and wondering what to get your close friends and loved ones.

The natural remedy is to let go of the big dollar expectations and give a gift that money can’t buy. Give your time, your love, a special handwritten note – a priceless gift that comes from the heart. Your gift will be remembered long after the wrapping paper is recycled.

2. Busy, Busy Busy
The Christmas shopping season starts in earnest the day after Thanksgiving on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Yet, shopping is only one of the holiday traditions. Add in Christmas cards, Christmas baking, holiday parties with friends, neighbors, at work. If you go to Christmas concerts or volunteer with charity projects, more and more of your time is involved.

It’s like running non-stop marathon for 30 days! A natural remedy is to slow down, and accept that you can’t do everything. It is okay to say “No” to outings or events that you don’t want to attend. Savor the season by just being.

3. Sleep Deprivation
High expectations and staying busy take a toll on your body. That leads to more stress and tiredness. Just when you need more energy to enjoy the holiday activities, you may find yourself burned out, depressed and fatigued.

A natural remedy is to get high quality sleep, deep REM sleep where your body can recover from the stress. Without deep sleep, you can become irritable and miserable during one of the most joyful times of the year. If you need to use sleeping supplements, make sure that you choose one that is safe, effective and all natural. There’s no sense adding more chemicals to your body that make you feel even more tense.

Let’s recap the three main problems of the Christmas season and their natural remedies.

Problem 1. High expectations. Remedy: Give something personal that is from your heart.
Problem 2. Busy, Busy, Busy. Solution: Slow down and say “No.”
Problem 3: Lack of good quality sleep. Fix: Use a natural supplement to sleep soundly during the Christmas season.

Enjoy this Christmas season with greater peace of mind and serenity.

Don’t let the stress of Christmas get you down. Get sound, deep sleep with a natural remedy for anxiety that will help you wake up refreshed. Learn more at www.cure-anxiety.com.

4 Steps on How to Be Alone Yet Joyful Over Christmas

By Roslyn Rajasingam -

Christmas is meant to be a time for people to be joyful, reconciled and at peace, with oneself and with others.

For Christians, it is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. For people of goodwill, it is also a time to be happy and be one with those celebrating the joyful season.

People celebrate with family, friends, colleagues and even neighbours. But, what about those of us who are not surrounded by these people? Or, perhaps live far away from them? Can they still joyfully celebrate Christmas?

Well, it is a personal decision. Firstly, we have to decide whether we want to be part of the joyful season or not.

Secondly, forget about buying presents or receiving them. I am sure we all reach that stage in our lives where we actually do not need to receive or expect presents anymore. Although, we still need to be gracious when receiving them.

Thirdly, once we have decided that presents are not really important, we have to accept that real joy comes from within. We need to realize that we all deserve to be happy and joyful, whether we have a family or not. Celebrating Christmas with your family does not guarantee happiness. It has to start from within you.

Finally, reach out to others. Do not wait for people to come to you. There are people out there who are just willing to talk to you, know you and are willing to listen to your story. On Christmas day, many churches and communities welcome people who are alone. Simply check out your local papers or visit your local churches.

If you do not like to enter churches, hang around local shopping centers, buses and train stations. Observe people. Talk to people. Be open to experience happy encounters. Listen to touching life stories.

Find the real meaning and purpose of the celebrations. Even if you still choose to be alone on Christmas day, you can still choose to be joyful within.

Contentment – The Essence of Happiness

By Brian Gosur -

Are you content with your life? Are you happy with the way things are? Now I know there are always improvements that can be made, and I am not talking about that, but what I am asking is, if nothing was to ever change in your life again, would you be content with your life?

We live in a world where no one is content or happy with anything in their life. They want the next and best car, phone, computer, or big screen TV. The marketing machines that move, are always compelling us and pushing us toward the next and better one. You can’t live without this one. You have to have it. What is everyone going to think of you?

Now I’m all in favor of the free enterprise system. It’s the best system on the planet. It keeps our economy strong, and the competition always makes for good solid products. But the one thing that can bring it all down is greed, and we sure have plenty of that to go around these days, not only in both the corporate and government sectors, but also each and every one of us. Yes we Americans are greedy and we show it for the entire world to see.

We are entering into one of the biggest greed showing seasons…Christmas. Now I know that Christmas is pretty much a worldwide event, and there are plenty of other countries that get into the shopping, spending, and buying of Christmas mode, but I’m concentrating my thoughts on us who live in the U.S.

Our lack of contentment is what drives our economy. Companies play on this and get us to try and out buy each other. Every year we have to have the new thing that just came out. We buy it with money that we don’t have. We finance it from credit cards that charge us exorbitant rates, and we end up paying ten times more for it than it really is worth.

If you’re discontent, then, you my friend are not happy, and if you aren’t happy, what makes you think that a new gadget, that’s going to put you in debt, will make you happy? It might deliver a false happiness that might last for a while, but when you see those bills coming in, it will vanish just as fast as it came, and will be replaced with anguish and despair.

I think this struggling economy will and should all help us to see that, things and gadgets don’t bring happiness and contentment, people do. Maybe it’s good that we can’t buy all that stuff. Lets learn to do things for each other instead of buying each other.

I remember my parents and my grand-parents used to tell me about the great depression, “everybody was in the same boat, they would say.”We were all poor and struggling and we had to depend on each other to survive.” Maybe we all could use a little bit of that kind of humility today, and a warm strong hand to hold out to others.

I look at my grand kids and I remember when I was young. We didn’t worry about our next meal. My dad provided a roof over our heads, food to eat, and a warm bed to sleep in at night. It wasn’t till I was married and had a family of my own that I realized all that he and my mom did and sacrificed for all of us. How ungrateful we were back then.

I see that ungratefulness in our world today. We live in the, “give me” society, where we have our hands out to take, and never out to lend a helping hand and give.

There is a program that is on TV, it’s called, “What would you do?” They run different scenes that they set up with actors and see what and how the public will respond. Kind of like Candid Camera did years ago.

One was a man who pretends to have passed out on the street. He lays there for twenty minutes before a homeless person comes to his aide. A homeless person, who has no real means to help, but gives what she has to help another human being who has a need.

When the scene was over, the actor who played the fallen man was visibly shaken as he embraced this homeless person for coming to his side to help. A simple act of kindness can be a very effective Christmas present this time of year. It’s the gift that touches deep into the heart of someone, and keeps on giving and giving. It might just change you also.

You can’t take anything with you when you leave this world. There are no U-Hauls behind any casket. But there is one thing that you will take when you exit this world…that’s your relationships with people.

If you believe that there is a life after here, than why not start investing into those people right now. Put your money where it will do the best good. Help someone out, if you can. Hold a door open, say good morning with a nice smile on your face, or call a person by their name. Show people that you do care. These things won’t cost you a penny and they are things that we all can do right now.

If taking and spending has never brought you happiness or contentment, try giving, and not just things….but give yourself. It’s the best time of the year to start learning how to do that, and I promise you, you will find happiness and you will find contentment. It will change you.

It’s what we celebrate at Christmas, when God gave Himself for you. “For God so loved you, that He gave His one and only Son. That who so ever would believe in Him, would not ever perish, but have life everlasting.” John 3:16

Merry Christmas everyone.

Tips For Maintaining Your Health Through the Holidays

By Zsofia Christopher -

The zing of the festival mood is wafting in the air – after all, it’s the time of the year when we look ahead and find Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year lined up, bumper to bumper; it’s fun and festivities all the way. These holidays are what remind us of the beauty and significance of our lives, things that we swiftly overlook in our loaded down existence. Alas, it is also the time when all our onerous efforts and victories over health and diet go for a vulgar toss. Now, what can we do about it?

Watch what you Eat

How can you resist the Halloween candies, the Thanksgiving turkey, or the dainty Christmas cake for that matter? Not easy, you say. The trick is to take small portions of everything so that you can enjoy it all while not stuffing yourself. The mental image of an expanding waistline should keep us all sufficiently motivated. The problem of alcoholic binges is not too far away. Restrict yourself to wine, or not more than a couple of drinks. This way not only will you maintain weight and health it will also thwart any unsavory incidents involving an intoxicated you. Such incidents can ruin the fun not just for you but for the entire family.

Drink lots of Water

This is valid everyday and particularly so for holidays, considering the amount of sweets and fatty food one ends up consuming. Drinking more water will also make amends for the dehydration brought on by alcoholic drinks. Water also flushes out the residues from your binges. So, carry a bottle of water in your car and sip at it frequently.

Don’t ditch your workouts

Bearing in mind the extra calories that go in, don’t shift your exercise regimen to low gear. If you feel like taking a break from its rigors go on a walk instead and if it’s too cold outside, run on a thread-mill. You can also do yoga stretches, lift weights or do push ups inside the house. If you dare to brave the cold and venture out be sure to dress warmly.

Keep yourself warm

Some of the holiday activities are sure to extract you from your home – there is the shopping, family dinners, visits or parties. Weighing the vicissitudes of the Fall and Winter weather, it is always better to be prepared. Dress warmly in woolen clothes and carry an extra coat or jacket, just in case. Put several layers of clothing between yourself and the cold. What we least need is an attack of flu or cold to botch the festival plans. Since kids are more vulnerable to these infections make sure they are wrapped up warmly.

Find time to Relax

Often overlooked, relaxing helps you tide over the crazy bustle of holidays without burning yourself out. Catch up on the latest DVD flicks or bestsellers. Think about pampering yourself a little by getting a massage or a facial treatment. Catch up on your sleep by taking catnaps in the afternoon. Be positive and indulge in happy thoughts.

Spend time with loved ones

Now is the time to organize gatherings with friends and your extended family. Go across the street with an armful of homemade goodies and get to know your neighbors. Meet up with old friends, recount those crazy anecdotes, pull each other legs, and laugh riotously – this is the reason why some of the best memories are associated with holidays.

This holiday, let us create some precious memories, NOT shameful recollections of drunken escapades or appalling visions of paunches. This holiday let us stay happy, and healthy.

Christmas For One: Mental Health Over the Holidays

By Kristin Johnson -

My dear friend, poet Dessa Byrd Reed, often spends holidays alone as a widow. However, she doesn’t see this, as many people often do, as a depressing circumstance. In a November 2000 POETIC VOICES interview, she said, “Because I am single and live alone, I eat out a lot. I love to talk to strangers. That’s one of my favorite things. I go out for breakfast and talk to people.”

Another talented writer, Leslie Lafayette, dealt with being a childless woman by choice in WHY DON’T YOU HAVE KIDS?: Living a Full Life Without Parenthood. You can bet that because of her choice many people would pity her. She writes the “Alone Again, Naturally” column for the outstanding magazine THE DESERT WOMAN. Observers might conclude she’s miserable on the holidays.

Both Leslie and Dessa have full lives and radiate Christmas cheer, not just in December but all year round. While we all need human contact, it’s a mistake to conclude that people without the traditional family dinner are all on suicide watch. Anyone who has negotiated where to have Christmas and which family members can come when, not to mention refereed in-law and spouse disputes, knows that the allure of having a table for one at Christmas is powerful.

However, when people aren’t alone by choice, Christmas can be lonely. In Michigan, I interviewed a woman, the founder of a divorced and widowed support group, who chose to have Christmas dinner every year for lonely widows, widowers and divorced people, usually from her support group. Her children understood that she needed to start this new tradition in her new life.

Similarly, having children around, even with the relentless gimmes and commercialism, lends a special magic to Christmas, which is why playing Santa appeals to so many.

The holidays can be joyous if you’re alone, or they can be difficult. As with so much, your feelings depend on your personality, your circumstances, your childhood, and in many cases on medical or psychological conditions.

Some tips to remember if you’re alone or without your support system:

*Take advantage of counseling services in your community, including from your local church, synagogue, temple or other place of worship.

*Take time out for spirituality. You might attend services just to experience human contact and community. People are generally nicer at Christmas.

*Do all the things you wanted to do but couldn’t in your former life. Travel. Even in this post-9/11 world, you can visit faraway places. There are many tour groups for singles.

*Attend art walks, holiday concerts, lectures, and movie screenings alone. Or invite a friend you haven’t talked to in a while.

*Volunteer–it’s a wonderful way to make friends, stay active, and feel fulfilled.

*Go out to dinner alone! While women in particular feel uncomfortable, project an air of confidence. You are a strong, vital woman. This doesn’t mean that you should go bar-hopping or take risks alone at night. But you have the right to ask for a table for one without feeling as though people are judging you. (Most people are too preoccupied with their own lives to notice.)

*Gather a circle of friends or people in the same situation–just make sure the evening doesn’t turn into a pity party.

*Don’t overdrink, overeat or do drugs. It’s just not a good tradition.

*Bake cookies if you’re so inclined. Cookies make wonderful Christmas presents and ways to reconnect with your friends.

You may be tempted to think of yourself as Ebenezer Scrooge. Don’t, and boil anyone in his own pudding who calls you “Scrooge.” You are honoring Christmas in your own heart and keeping it always. Christmas for one, anyone?

Kristin Johnson is co-author of the “enthusiastically recommended” Midwest Book Review pick, Christmas Cookies Are For Giving: Stories, Recipes and Tips for Making Heartwarming Gifts (ISBN: 0-9723473-9-9).
