Gold from Google

mind

By Irene Conlan -

The video today is a “must see” for those of  you who are interested in the brain, how to think more positively or how emotions organize the brain either positively or negatively.

It is a video of a talk given by Dr. Rick Hanson, author of Buddha Brain, to the employees of Google. The talk is titled, “Neuroscience of Happiness Love and Wisdom.” The talk is a mixture of brain anatomy and physiology (briefly), how the brain is affected by certain emotions and how it is prone to take in anything negative rather than those things that are  positive. In short, his talk is a combination of psychology, neurology and contemplation.

Isn’t that what we all want? Isn’t that why you read the Self Improvement Blog – because you’re seeking:

  • Happiness
  • Love, and
  • Wisdom?

I am not going to try to reproduce it here or paraphrase it. I am simply going to urge you to click the picture of Dr. Rich  Hanson in the lower right corner of  this page and watch it for yourself. It’s an hour long and well worth spending the time for.

To visit his website go to http://www.rickhanson.net/

Enjoy.

A Weight Loss Update

scalesBy Irene Conlan -

For those of you who have been following this blog for a while, you may know that I have been on a very restricted food program to lose weight. I was in trouble. Serious trouble. I had a minor stroke and was having heart problems. Something had to be done.

I had gained the weight after a bout with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Even though I had not changed my eating patterns, I started gaining and went from a size 6 to 18 in a very short period of time. This continued for several years. I tried diet after diet and nothing worked. I even had a doctor tell me to forget it because people “my age” can’t l ose weight. I exercised and I starved but the weight didn’t move. Finally, I decided to take the doctor’s advice and forget it.

I must confess that, even though I didn’t overeat – and my friends and family will attest to that – I ate the wrong things. But eating the right things didn’t work, either. I gave up.

When I started having some health challenges I changed doctors. The first thing the new doctor asked me is, “What are you doing about your weight?” I told her my story. She gave me the card of an internist who specialized in weight loss and this time it is working. I can’t discuss the diet because 1) it is individualized for me and 2) it needs strict supervision by a doctor.

To date I have lost 90 (yes, ninety) pounds.

I have tried to be very aware of the changes that are taking place physically and emotionally and it is interesting being a witness to my own changes.

The physical changes are becoming more and more apparent. But for starters I feel better. My blood pressure is down to an average of 130/80 from an average of 180/110. What a relief that is. My knees no longer hurt all the time nor does my back. The one and a half block walk to the grocery store used to be more than I could handle and now I walk a mile daily without getting winded. I increase the distance and pace on a regular basis and it is exhilarating to be out in the fresh air and sunshine again. I can reach my feet and tie my shoes and my balance has improved. Everything about my body seems to be better and I am deeply grateful.

The emotional side is very interesting  to me. While the diet is very limited I haven’t minded it. It has been exciting to step on the scale every day and see that it has gone down another mark. This has been consistent since I started last July.  And each time I reach what I consider a major milestone I have my own little foodless celebration that spurs me on.

I hadn’t realized  that being that heavy had taken its toll on my self esteem but it had – big time. I was staying home most of the time because I didn’t want to be seen and I literally had nothing to wear. Fashion for fat ladies in virtually non existent and there is little selection. I had stopped thinking about ever having a relationship and had capitulated to the thought of being alone for the rest of my life. I considered my situation hopeless. After 15 years nothing had helped and I thought I had tried everything. I wan’t depressed but you could see depression from there. I was very unhappy with how I felt and how I looked.

I’m not finished yet. I go on vacation from the diet for three weeks beginning Monday and during that time I’m going on vacation, literally.  My brother has a condo in La Paz and I’m going to spend a couple of weeks with him enjoying the beaches of the Baja peninsula. When I return  I go back on the diet  for the last leg of my weight loss journey.  I will be finished by summer.

I am already able to buy clothes in regular sizes and what a joy that is. No more “fat ladies’ catalog” shopping for me. I will have a great shopping trip when I get back to a size 6 or even 8. (Hey, I’m thrilled to have a size that doesn’t have an X in it).

My point in telling you all these details is this: If you have a serious weight problem, there is hope for you. If you absolutely hate being in large sizes and having your health suffer from the excess weight you carry, don’t give up. I am in my “older years” and if I can do it, you can, too. The first step is to make a commitment to yourself to do it no matter what it takes. Find a doctor in your area who can help you. There are bariatric physicians now who specialize in weight loss. Find several and find out what their program is. Pick one and do it.

Your body will thank you.

Focus on Joy to Manifest Happiness

blue-butterflyBy Ali Bierman –

Whatever you focus on expands. To feel joy think thoughts that let you feel joyful. Simple, yes? Ah, here comes the challenge-you cannot think joyous thoughts now and then during the day. You must think joyous thoughts most of the day to live in a joyful state.

You want to continue this new behavior until you establish the habit of feeling joyful. Yes, living in joy is a habit you can create. What is so good about habits? You do them without thinking. They become automatic–operating out of your awareness.

Think about learning to drive a car. You had to learn how to start the car, shift gears, use the brake and accelerator, etc. You focused your mind continually, monitoring every aspect of making that car move and stop safely. You paid attention at 100%–no cell phone conversation, etc.

In time your driving became automatic. Now you just get in, start the motor and off you go. You can talk with others (cell phones still pose safety questions for drivers) and eat and still drive safely, right?

The same holds true for creating a new behavior. First you repeat it over and over until it becomes a habit.

The more you think and therefore feel joy in your life, the easier it becomes to stay in those thoughts and produce that kind of energy. Your emotions and muscles wire together. In fact, neural networks form “tying” together joyful feelings with joyful thoughts. Your physical body will also assume certain postures that get wired into those Joy Networks.

Every time you think, feel or perform an action that triggers part of that network, guess what-the entire Joy Network kicks into action! Soon (for most people that period is about 28 days) joyful thinking replaces your old habits that left you feeling crummy at worst and ho hum at best.

Twenty-eight days. Hmm. is your well being worth making a concentrated effort for twenty-eight days? You see, you will not have to wait twenty-eight days for your world to look different or for good things to happen regularly. In fact, that shift will happen the very first day you apply attention to how you feel and shift into joy whenever you slip away from it.

Your Emotional Health Affects Your Heart Health

man-in-mirrorBy Lori Lowe -

Since heart disease is the #1 killer of both men and women in this country, you should be very concerned about the health of your heart and your partner’s heart. Barbara Bush is recovering from heart surgery, and Robin Williams is about to have the same surgery. Former President George Bush nearly broke down providing an update, showing his deep care and concern for wife of 65 years. Most families have some history with the disease.

In a just-released research report, researchers from the University of Utah show that in addition to known risk factors, such as blood pressure and cholesterol, the quality of emotional lives impacts our risk of heart disease.

One fact suggested by the data is that a history of divorce is linked to heart disease. Another is that an unhappy or strained marriage can lead to high blood pressure, obesity and high blood sugar, particularly in women. This can put them at higher risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Hormonal affects of stress appear to contribute to health problems.

The researchers say that “women appear to be more sensitive and responsive to relationship problems than men” … and that “those problems could harm their health.” The fact that women are more sensitive shouldn’t come as a surprise to us, but I do wonder if more sensitive men are equally affected. In any case, here are some conclusions we should have known all along:

News flash to all husbands: Your wives are sensitive and should be treated with care.
News flash to all couples: harboring anger and frequently arguing is bad for your health.

A study released last year seems to show the flip side of this, that daily cortisol patterns (an indicator of stress) are linked to marital satisfaction for women but not men,” said co-author Rena Repetti, a UCLA professor in the department of psychology.

Men showed their cortisol levels drop dramatically after a busy day. Happily married women saw this benefit, but unhappily married women did not.

“Past research has found that men appear to get a health and longevity boost from marriage, while for women, being married is only beneficial insofar as the marriage is high-quality,” Repetti said. “This study is the first to point to daily cortisol fluctuations as a specific pathway through which marital quality affects health for women but not men.”

Repetti explains, “It may be that a chronically unhappy marriage creates multiple occasions everyday when the wife needs to mount a stress response, putting her cortisol levels on a kind of roller coaster ride. The system is under more wear and tear. It’s like driving a car in traffic conditions that are constantly stop and go. You need to repeatedly step on the gas and apply the brakes, step on the gas, apply the breaks. Over time, you create a less reliable system. You don’t stop and re-accelerate as quickly. You don’t recover as quickly.”

My thought is that women frequently care for those around them and don’t prioritize their own needs. Don’t let a heart attack be the first sign that you need to take better care of yourself and your emotional health. If you feel you have an unhappy marriage, please seek out a good marriage counselor.

You’ve heard of people who died of a broken heart-is your emotional heart closely connected with your heart health? What do you need to do to improve your emotional health and reduce stress levels?

Forgive Yourself First

anger1By Kristin Robertson -

A shocked silence hung over the conference room. Barry (not his real name), usually a compassionate and even-tempered vice president, had just loudly berated one of his managers during a staff meeting. The accused manager was looking down at his hands with a reddened face and the other managers’ jaws had dropped at this unusual display of emotional mismanagement.

Barry quickly ended the meeting and hurried to his office. Later, he told me about the situation. “I was at the end of my rope, Kristin. My son is having terrible health problems and I had been up most of the night worrying about him and about work. I shouldn’t have lost my temper. How can I ever forgive myself or make it up to that manager?”

As his coach, I told him that self-forgiveness is an important managerial practice, and that he had an opportunity to model good self-care to the rest of the team. He decided to apologize in person to the manager and made a public apology at the next staff meeting. Then he and I worked on ways for Barry to forgive himself.

You probably can relate to Barry’s situation. Everyone has multiple instances in their past that beg for self-forgiveness. Here are some self-forgiveness opportunities you might experience:

You blame yourself for being laid-off or not getting a promotionYou are angry at yourself for having to learn by making mistakes (like saying something hurtful, sending out an inappropriate email, doing something unethical)You deeply regret harm that you caused someone elseYou are caught in a cycle of self-talk that endlessly repeats, “I shoulda, coulda, woulda”You regret lost opportunities to create harmony or show love, such as losing your temper at work or missing your daughter’s soccer gameYou aren’t ready to forgive someone else

Naturally, your first step in self-forgiveness is to take responsibility for what you did. That means that you make amends for any harm you created, and do your best to right any wrong. You might have to apologize to the person you hurt, or reap the natural or legal consequences of what you did (such as paying a fine, going to court, losing a job, not closing a deal, and more). Taking responsibility is the mark of a mature individual.

However, if you think you need self-forgiveness, you already, by definition, realize the part you played in the situation and are aware of your responsibility. This awareness is positive, and you must give yourself a pat on the back for being responsible for your actions.

Then, you deserve your own forgiveness. Remember that forgiveness is achieving a feeling of neutrality toward the situation and not feeling surge of negative emotions when you think about it. Self-forgiveness is part of exquisite self-care, in which you fulfill your own needs and take full responsibility for your own happiness.

The seven-step process of forgiving that I describe in my new book, A Forgiveness Journal: Letting Go of the Past, works for both forgiving others and forgiving ourselves. Some of the highlights of the process include identifying your feelings, gaining perspective and blessing yourself.

Identify your feelings.
You must express your feelings such as regret, anger, sadness, blame and resentment. Emotions that are buried or stuffed away never die – they only cause One effective way to do this is to write about your feelings, perhaps starting your sentences with “I am angry about {blank}” or “I feel regret about {blank}”. The great thing about writing is that it is entirely private – no one needs to see what you write. One of my coaching clients types his journal entries on his computer and purposely does not save his writing, so there is no chance of anyone finding or seeing what he wrote.

Gain Perspective
Are you even going to remember this incident at the end of your life? If not, then you realize the relative insignificance of this event. Were there good things that came out of the experience for you? List any positive outcomes. What would the benevolence of Source energy say about this? Source does not judge you but can only extend love, just as a loving parent extends loves to a wayward child. As a spiritual teacher once told me, “We must extend to ourselves the same compassion that we extend to others.”

Bless Yourself Understanding that you did the best you could under the circumstances, you can let go of your self-judgment and bless yourself instead. Every time you think of the situation, consciously redirect your thoughts away from “I shoulda…” and choose to practice self-love by saying, “I honor my true essence” or “I bless myself”.

Changing the world starts with changing yourself. There is a wonderful ripple effect that happens when we change our interior perspective. Our actions start lining up with our thoughts, and people begin to react differently to us. As Gandhi so famously said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Practice self-forgiveness to create a more forgiving world.

Four Steps to Sleep – The Ultimate Health Boost

sleepBy Donna Houston -

The only people who can really understand the importance of a great nights sleep are those who are not getting any. Lack of sleep or a disturbed rest can have a very detrimental effect on your health, leaving you feeling drained, exhausted and not at your best. Don’t feel that you have to put up with the situation, it is best to nip it in the bud now, to get the sleep you need.

There are many good and valid reasons why you may not be able to sleep:

- A new baby
- Illness or sickness in the family
- Recent changes in circumstances – moving home for example
- Bereavement and grief
- Worry over money (common these days)
- Family arguments and relationship worries

What can you do?

Try and realize that many of your issues are only temporary, a new baby will learn to sleep and most illnesses will resolve themselves in time. A lot of worry is because you feel that you are at the mercy of outside forces of which you have no control over.  You may feel better discussing this through with a trusted friend or counselor. There is a lot you can do to help yourself get the sleep you need.

First step
– consider when was the last time you relaxed or felt at peace, many people are too busy trying to cope with their problems that they don’t realize that are on a constant loop of worry and fretting.

Second step – learn to relax, sometimes the you becomes so tense through lack of sleep and worry that even lying down the body is full of tension. There are many different ways to learn to relax, try meditation either classes or self guided via tapes and Cd. This takes time in fact you can feel very uncomfortable at first as true relaxation can feel strange as your body is not used to it.

Third step
- Exercise is a great way to help improve your sleep, the body needs to move to get the lymph system moving to remove the waste from the body and prevent you feeling sluggish. Some of the best exercise can be walking, running, gardening (as fresh air is beneficial too) or if you really want to get rid of tension boxing or martial arts.

Fourth step – Try an herbal remedy to help you sleep. They can make a big difference.

Many people try lots of different ways to get to sleep and one or more in combination can help you on your way to a great natural sleep.

I am a registered nurse with 16 years in the health profession which I love. I have a deep interest in the benefits of nature and exercise to promote health.  Some of my other interests are yoga and the health benefits of alternative therapies. I believe there are many easy and simple ways to help people achieve better health and want to educate others about it. I am always on the search for the most up to date research.

The Secret Role Emotions Play in Our Health and Wellness

By Josef Mack -

Whether we know it or not or whether we accept it or not, our emotions play a critical role in our overall health. Here are some questions for you to consider: Do you have a handle on your emotions? Are you steady and consistent? Are you all over the map? Are you even aware of your feelings or emotions? Do you cry at the drop of a hat? Or have you never cried at all in your entire life? I am not trying to make any judgments here, but I want you to look at and be honest with yourself. Take the time to recognize the emotional elements that play a role in your health and life.

The secret here is to understand how you handle your emotions. Are you in control of your emotions, or are your emotions in control of you? You may very well ask – so what? If you let your emotions control you then you may want to look at changing that behavior in order to give you a better chance at achieving what you want in your life. Balance in all areas is a major factor in our state of health and wellness.

What is really meant by our emotional nature? And where do our emotions really come from? Our emotions or feelings come from our heart. Are you able to feel, or are you like Mr. Spock from Star Trek, who is strictly logical and intellectual? Do you bury your feelings? Do you ignore your feelings and hope they will go away? Or are your emotions on your shirt sleeve and you don’t think before you react? Remember to be in the best of health we need to be balanced.

We are multi-dimensional beings. We think and we feel, whether we like it or not. And if you claim you don’t feel, I would challenge you – that is a feeling as well.

Emotions can go all over the map, from tears of joy to tears of despair. If we do not acknowledge and deal with our feelings and instead suppress them, all we are doing is stuffing them deep inside ourselves till they explode.

When they explode, we won’t have any way to control that event. Think of a bomb going off. No one knows where the pieces will end up, it is uncontrolled chaos. That state of being uncontrolled is the same thing with our emotions. When we blow – watch out! The stuff will hit the fan and go everywhere.

Have you ever read about people who for no known reason suddenly seem to go crazy and lose it? How about the ‘normal, average citizen’, who goes on a shooting spree and then ends up killing himself as well? When the reporters interview his family or friends, no one can explain it. He was just an average Joe, then he blew up for no apparent reason, or was the reason building up inside of him all those weeks, months and years?

Sometimes the explosion can be internal, and the stress that builds up could lead to a heart attack, an ulcer, a ruptured appendix,a stroke or something equally painful.

Do you really want to take such chances with your health? Our body does the best it can to keep us healthy. When we ignore it, when we don’t take care of it, or when we abuse it, our body does what it can to survive. So the choice is up to us – will we choose to be balanced, or will we choose not to be and accept the consequences?

Are Your Emotions Making You Sick – The Seven Emotions That Can Destroy Your Health

By Roslyn Motter -

b101You have probably realized that your emotions can make you sick, but do you know why?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has the answer.

You have probably noticed that when you have an extreme emotion, your pulse and breathing change, you lose your appetite and / or your urination or defecation become more frequent.

TCM identifies seven injurious emotions. These are excessive joy, anger, fear, anxiety, fright, pensiveness and grief. Over time, extremes in these emotions cause havoc in the body.

Each of the seven emotions is attracted to a particular organ.

  • An excess of anger damages the liver.
  • An excess of fear and fright damage the kidneys.
  • An excess of joy damages the heart.
  • An excess of grief damages the lungs.
  • An excess of sympathy /pensiveness damages the spleen.

Fear arises from thoughts in your mind, while fright is caused by a sudden shock. No particular damage is attributed to anxiety but it is assumed to have the same effect as sorrow.

Conversely, if any of the major organs are weak, they will generate the emotion that is affiliated with them.

So if your spleen is weak, you will become an extremely sympathetic or pensive person.

Alcoholics and drug addicts who have damaged their livers, can be very angry people.

People with weak kidneys are often timid and nervous.

Have you ever heard of someone having a heart attack after they have won the lottery? Also people can manifest lung cancer from grief after their life partner has died.

Anger causes the qi to ascend; joy causes the qi to scatter; sorrow and anxiety cause the qi to disperse; fear causes the qi to descend; pensiveness causes the qi to become knotted; and fright causes abnormality in the qi. Qi is the vital energy or life force in our bodies. Each organ has its own qi.

For example, extreme anger causes the liver qi to rise upwards through the liver channel. The liver channel travels right through the body connecting the liver to other major organs and to the skin.

Hence, damage to the liver can affect the eyes, shoulders, back, nails and tendons. It can also cause migraine and headaches. If it is not treated, it can adversely affect the heart, to which the liver provides nourishment. It could also affect the stomach and spleen causing alternate diarrhea and constipation.

Breast problems such as lumps and swelling can be traced back to liver problems. Be aware though that it is not only expressed anger that can damage the liver – suppressed anger can too. In fact, it is quite normal and healthy to express anger when appropriate. It is only the extreme of emotion that is unhealthy. It is far better to express anger (within reason) than to repress it. Suppressed anger is expressed in the body as depression.

We probably all know a kind and helpful person that has been constantly put upon by their friends and family. They never complain and they appear to be perfectly happy with their lot, but one day they contract cancer. Repressed anger causes stagnation in the liver and this leads to stagnation in other organs.

Emotions just do not damage their own organ. Due to the channel relationships within the body, any excessive emotion will inevitably lead to damage in the liver channel. The liver rules the emotions, balancing them and ensuring there is free circulation of qi. When an emotion gets stuck in an organ and the liver is unable to shift it, the liver becomes blocked.

Also, because of the unique position of the heart as emperor of the body and its affiliations with all major organs, it is damaged by all emotions too.

At times we are all likely to be subject to emotional extremes. Life is just like that. People die and we become grief stricken. People make us furious and situations make us frightened.

So what can we do?

Controlling emotions is easier said than done. Meditation, tai chi and yoga are all helpful in relaxing the body and mind. Acupuncture calms the emotions and frees up the qi. Flower essences (available from health food stores) and homeopathy are also excellent for changing blocked mental patterns.

It takes time, but in due course you will find yourself become a calmer person and you will find that your health improves accordingly.
