Feeling good about yourself can seem like a long way away if you do not feel like that right now. But there is nothing better than feeling good about who you are and where you are in life, and that is something that everyone should be striving for.

Here are 10 things you can do daily to help you feel good about yourself.

1. Work hard

Whatever job you do – do it well. It doesn’t matter what you do as a career as long as you do it the best you can. The satisfaction that comes from working hard and doing the best you can will instantly make you feel like a winner and someone who puts their effort into things. This will make you feel successful and push you forward in your career.

2. Do what you love as a career

When you are working for something you believe in you will be happier than if you work for something you can’t stand. This makes sense right? But so many people are working at jobs they hate, and find themselves spending their days complaining and wishing they were doing something else. We spend a lot of time at work and we should be doing what makes us feel good.

Whatever makes you happiest is what you should be doing. You can become anything you want. You can do whatever you want. You just have to put the work in to get there. If you need education then get it. If you need skills then acquire them. If you need to just get off your butt and go for it then do that! Do what you got to do to do what you love.

3. Do what you love in life

Everyone has different passions and activities that they enjoy. Not engaging in these activities is stifling your happiness. When you get to do what you love you feel good naturally. So get out and do what you love! Find the time in your day to do something that makes you feel good.

4. Be kind to others

Being a good person to others makes you feel good instantly. Ever heard of the smile effect? If you smile at someone then they will pass it on. Soon your initial smile may have caused a smile in another country! The point is if you are kind to others you will make them feel good and affect their day positively. This will make you feel good just knowing that.

5. Be thankful

Spend some time being thankful for the things in your life that make you happy. It may be your spouse, your pets, or your new kindle. Whatever it is take some time to really feel good about it and you will carry that happy feeling into other things in your day.

6. Make a difference in the world

Whether you donate to a charity or help an elderly person at the grocery store, you can make a difference in the world daily. Things like recycling, composting, and being conscious of our world are all things that can make a difference. Helping others, and being aware of others needs and desires, can also make a difference. You will feel great about yourself because you are impacting this world in a positive way.

7. Stop complaining

When you complain you feel bad. There is no way that you can complain and feel good at the same time. So do what you got to do to stop complaining! Take action and make those things you complain about better. And try to accept the things you cannot change. You will find you feel better about yourself and your life just from this one act alone.

8. Take care of yourself physically

Make better food decisions when you sit down to eat. Try to eliminate processed food and start to eat more fresh and organic food. Avoid sugar and eat more naturally sweet treats like fruit. Start exercising at every chance you get and get your body feeling great! Your digestive system will improve, your body will tone up, and you will feel like a million bucks.

9. Take care of yourself mentally

A golden rule is to strive to be better every day. Whatever issues you are having should be things on your to do list of things to work on and make better. Personal development is crucial to moving forward in life and feeling good about yourself. If you stay in the same spot for life you will feel the same for life. Get growing!

10. Change negative thoughts

Whether you have to use positive affirmations or just give yourself a tap on the head to break the thoughts – stop thinking negatively. Negative thoughts put you in a place that is the exact opposite of feeling good. They bring you down and hold you there by becoming beliefs. So if you think you are fat, even if you are not, you will soon believe it to the core of your being. How can you feel good when you believe something negative? Random acts of kindness serve a dual purpose. They not only make other people feel good but they make you feel good as well. There are so many different ways that you can perform a random act of kindness throughout your day, and if you take the time to grab the opportunity you will thank yourself later.

Here are just a few ways you can do random acts of kindness that will have you feeling good from the inside out.

Help someone out – Take the time to help someone carry something that is too heavy, or reach for something in the store that they can’t reach.

Lend an Ear To Someone in Need – Listening is one of the greatest gifts we can offer someone. I mean really listening to what they have to say and understanding their point of view. You will make them feel validated and possibly help them work through a major issue they are having.

Surprise someone – Whether you just call someone you haven’t heard from in a while, or if you go out and buy someone something they wanted, surprising them can make them feel really good. You may even brighten up a gloomy day.

Donate – Try donating to your local food bank or shelter on a regular basis. To donate to people who have less than you will not only make their lives better, but it will also make you appreciate what you have.

Be courteous – Most people will not let you in front of them in line for any reason. People do not want to give up that extra inch they have whether they are standing in line or driving in rush hour. Be a courteous person and let people get ahead of you sometimes. You will shock them, and you will show them there are people out there who think about others first.

Take notice of others – We live in our own bubble, that’s for sure. We can walk down a street and not see anyone even if the street is crowded. Take the time to notice others and appreciate their differences. Say something nice to someone to make them feel noticed. Just a quick hello and smile can brighten someone’s day.

Pick up after someone – Instead of yelling at someone for throwing garbage on the ground, or leaving their shopping cart in the middle of the parking lot, try picking up after them. You will feel better for not yelling and you may even inspire them to start picking up after themselves. People don’t respond well to yelling but kindness is a different story.

Be kind to yourself – Do something you love and something that makes you happy. Buy something you want that will make your life more fun or easier. You owe yourself as much kindness as you give to other people. After all, you are with yourself 24 hours a day, you might as well be good to yourself!

The Secret to Lasting Happiness

I believe that everyone in this world is striving to, in their own unique way, find their own happiness. People have vastly different personalities, beliefs, religions, values, and ideals but in the end, no matter which path we take through life we all just want to end up in a place where we can simply be happy.

Words are just symbols so when I use the word happy I’m referring to a lasting joy that permeates your being on a daily bases. My use of the term happiness can refer to a sense of inner peace, joy, bliss and fulfillment. When I talk about the secret of happiness I’m mean reaching a state in your life where your default state is happiness, and that happiness is present in your being for the vast majority of the time.

As I’ve travelled I’ve met a good number of people all with different life situations and levels of happiness. I’ve met people with very easy lives surrounded by loving friends who wake up every day bored, discontent or even annoyed with their situation. I’ve met financially wealthy people who in a fit of anger about their unhappiness scream “I can buy or do anything I want! Shouldn’t that be enough!?” and I’ve also met financially poorer people, with busy more difficult lives who can’t keep a beautiful smile off their face due to their everyday lasting happiness. This definitely posed the question in me, what’s the difference? What is the secret to happiness?

In order to find the secret of happiness we have to ask and answer a very important question. What is it exactly that makes a person happy? People have many ideals for what they want in their lives to make them happy. For some its financial abundance, for others its loving relationships, some want a sense of fulfillment from helping others, others want to feel successful in the career they pursue, and some simply want to be free from oppression or persecution. A more balanced person will decide happiness comes from achieving a degree of success and harmony in all of the important areas of his life, something that is far easier said than done. Now while pursuing these things these things can create varying degrees of outward happiness, are they really the secret to happiness? Let’s look deeper.

Filling the hole is not going to make you happy

If I could only just get that new high paying job, then I’d be happy. If I could only just escape my small home town, then I’d be happy. If I could only just find the perfect lover, then I’d be happy. Many people have the single ideal goal that they believe once achieved will allow them to finally have the happiness they’ve been pursuing. They feel a certain lack in their lives and until that emptiness is filled they will live in a less than happy state. The feeling of lack in this area they carry with them also helps to prevent them from fulfilling it. The truth is however, even after accomplishing that one thing that you’re sure will finally make you happy for the rest of your life, in reality… is not going to change things all that much. Sure you will find temporary joy and pride at finally accomplishing the thing you set out to do, but as fast as a fancy new car loses its once exciting appeal, the happiness you got from accomplishing the goal will slowly fade, or be replaced by new goals and desires that you will again be sure, that once you accomplish them will finally make you happy.

One of the reasons you can’t find lasting happiness at the accomplishment of a certain something comes from our amazing ability to adapt to our life situations. When there is something missing in our lives we feel that filling the void will give us that extra ‘thing’ we need but once the void is filled we adapt to our new situation and the extra thing becomes the new normal. Our problems or things that make us unhappy are always relative to our current situation. A homeless person who is handed a sandwich by a stranger can feel the same or more joy than a business man who is taken out to a fancy 5 course lobster dinner. Because happiness is relative it’s very hard to achieve lasting happiness by adding things, people or accomplishments to your life.

What if for some reason the above doesn’t apply to you. Maybe you practice feeling gratitude for the things in your life and you have found a way to constantly feel grateful for all the things you have without becoming too ‘used to them’ that they lose their appeal. There is still another underlying problem that threatens your lasting happiness, and that is the impermanence of life.

The impermanence of life

The world is in a constant state of change, and the fact is that nothing is permanent and nothing lasts forever. If your happiness comes from your money there is always a fear of losing it. If your happiness comes from your beauty you will someday become old and wrinkled. If your happiness comes from your friends, family or lover, they will someday leave this world or we may be separated from them. There is always a way to lose that which makes you happy, or have it taken from you. The more we deny this and the more desperately we try to hold onto the things we need, the more unhappy we will be when they are gone. This fact may seem, grim and depressing but that is only the case if you falsely believe that happiness needs to come from all of these outside impermanent things. There is one permanent thing and it is the only true source of lasting happiness. It can take a little effort to find, but it is free and always available to us.

Happiness comes from within

Can you be completely happy just taking a walk through nature? Can you feel peace sitting alone in silence? If you were stranded on a deserted island could you still be joyful?

In the core of everyone is their default emotional state. When there is no outside forces distracting you, and your mind is free from thinking of the past or future what do you feel? Is your default state one of peace or is it something negative like boredom, depression or mild annoyance?

I believe that deep within all of us at our cores is a feeling of deep peace and joy but often times in life we become so disconnected from within that we lose sight of it and the inner peace almost seems to fade away. We become so distracted by everything on the outside that we don’t have time to focus on what’s deep within us. For many people our minds never give us a chance to rest. The nearly constant chatter in our heads keeps us preoccupied from experiencing anything internal.

Learning to quiet our minds, look inside and feel this deep joy within us, then to bring that out as a part of our daily lives is the secret to lasting happiness. The ever present joy deep within is the only type of happiness that cannot be lost or taken. People who have learnt to feel good for no reason tap into this source and it is the reason they are happy while others with better life situations may not be.

How to cultivate inner happiness

An important step to cultivating inner peace is to make the voice in your head align with the happiness you want to experience. If your inner thoughts about the outside world are frequently negative the negativity you create by thinking in this way will cut you off from your own inner happiness. Learn to control your mind and cut your thoughts off when you notice you begin to think overly negatively. Your mind is merely a tool for your own use and learning to control it so it doesn’t control you is an important step. Practice thinking positively. It does take practice… like anything you have to repeat something over and over before it becomes a habit, but if you already have a habit of thinking negatively breaking this habit will absolutely enhance your life. Practice seeing the good in people, the lighter side of things and be grateful for everything you can, in time thinking positively will be all there is. Learning to have positive thoughts is most important when thinking about yourself. If the voice in your head is putting yourself down, saying you’re not good enough or that you can’t accomplish something or simply that you are not a good person you will create negativity within that blocks the positivity at your core. Learning to love yourself for who you are is the most important step to creating inner happiness. Become the type of person you would love to hang out with. Ensure you are comfortable spending time in your own company, and it will be easy to feel good for no outside reason.

I think it’s important to know for a fact you can feel intense inner happiness without anything external playing a part. Chances are you may have experienced this from time to time. You may have just felt like you were in a really good mood for no reason. A great way to experience inner joy without outer influence is through meditation. Meditation is an amazing way to take control of your emotions and to help you experience things that only come from inside. You won’t be able to help feeling happy about it. You’re not fooling yourself by pretending to feel good when it’s really not true, the truth is you do contain these default feelings at the core of your being they just get clouded and hidden by all the other distractions in your life. Doing this simply reconnects you to what has always been there underneath.

But what about all the stuff?

Since its true we don’t need anything in this world to cultivate inner happiness does that mean we should forget about going for all the stuff we want? Some schools of thought would teach that since happiness comes from within its best to deprive ourselves of all outwardly possessions, desires, attachments, even to deprive the body and fast. This is totally foolish! Depriving yourself of things will force you to put in more effort merely to survive and all this effort detracts from the amount of time you can focus on being happy. Just because we don’t need these things to be happy doesn’t mean they will have a negative effect on us. When you learn to be happy with nothing, everything thing you add to your life simply feels like a nice bonus. Go for the financial abundance, the perfect health, the fun experience, the ideal lover, just don’t depend on them for your happiness. When these things are just a small bonus to your core happiness you aren’t desperately attached to them and if they are lost or taken your deep inner peace will still remain intact. Now I’m not saying that if something really upsetting happens such as losing a child or lover that you won’t be deeply upset… you will still be devastated and need time to grieve… but the difference between someone with their own inner peace compared with someone who had all their happiness invested in the other person will be a matter of how soon they can eventually recover.

Happiness grows

The more time you spend learning to get your happiness from the inside rather than the outside the easier it will become and feeling good will seem as effortless as breathing. When you are already feeling good inside any little joyful thing you encounter on the outside will add even more to your happiness than it normally would have. Happiness carries momentum with it and holding an inner happiness will make it easy to ignore the smaller negative things that inevitably happen. The inner happiness emanating from you will also affect everyone you meet and the positive energy shared in the interactions will make it easier for the happiness to continue and grow. Drawing your happiness from inside will give you a sense of freedom from the forces of this world, and give you true mastery over your own happiness.

Of Self-Love

Many people focus too much on wanting other people to love them back but never did they consider loving themselves first. They tend to forget that about themselves or do not care enough about what happens to others as long as they get the attention or affection they want. But learning to love yourself is just as challenging as convincing other people to love you back because of the notion other people have about self-love and confuses it with ego, pride, and arrogance. You will find that people who do not love themselves think negatively about themselves and feel they are not good enough, smart enough, beautiful enough, and some may even feel like they don’t deserve good things to happen in their lives that’s why they get more of these things in their reality.

Self-love is all about knowing what your self-worth is, and what you truly deserve meaning you love yourself enough to care for your own well-being. You do not depend on other people to make you feel good or look good. You accept yourself, for who you are, regardless of race or genetics. You forgive yourself from making your past mistakes, and you are able to move on and start anew. You have confidence and belief in your own ability and never doubt yourself in making decisions or taking risks. Self-love is all about you respecting yourself and appreciating your worth.

But sometimes it’s hard to find things you like about yourself so if hearing these things from a friend, a partner, or therapist will make you feel better, do it because it’s the first step to learning to love yourself. Write them down in a notebook and go back to it as many times as you can especially if you hear critical voices inside your head. You can also make a list of the things you like about yourself and be honest and modest about it. Make it a daily routine to praise yourself for doing something good because it nourishes your self-worth and you become happier and able to share that love to others. Think about a person that you love and what you appreciate about them and you will notice how good it felt. Now, turn it the other way and see yourself with love the way your friend does and feel the warm when you receive that love.

Use affirmations, and write them in a piece of paper, place it where you can always see and read it. Write down all the negative or critical thoughts and messages you hear inside your head. See if you can figure out who first said them to you (or said something of that nature). Then write out a response that counteracts each of those messages, one by one. Make the counter messages as strong and loving as you can. If you’re having trouble writing out counter messages, see if you can connect to a deep, wise part inside of you. Or write out what you would say to a friend if a friend said those things about herself.

Remember to tell yourself that you are truly a lovable person, and when you are overflowing with love for yourself, then you will be able to share that love to others. Only you can see what an amazing person you are and give yourself a chance to experience a life without pain, bitterness, or resentment and never allow anybody to make you think differently. Courage to Love – Is Ill-Health Healthy?

I was intrigued with a question for him that had been somewhere in the back of my mind since the start of the meeting. When we’d shaken hands and done the usual formalities of “how are you?” he’d responded with, “ahh it’s hay fever season” smiled and sat down to work. His resignation over this obvious discomfort had me confused.

For me, until that day, ill-health had represented something bad, something that should not exist, something that needed a solution, a doctor, medicine, and at the least, a trip to have pins stuck in me at the acupuncturist.

So, when the chance came to get off business matters, and chew over some small talk, I jumped at the chance. “What do you mean, Hay-fever season? I asked.

His response was sensational, “Each year, around this time, I feel like crap. I’m tired, sore eyes, lethargic. I take multivitamins, go running each day, work, sleep a bit more but apart from that, I just know that for this month, and some other weeks of the year, I am not going to feel fantastic, and that’s OK. I just don’t let it affect me.”

Separating how I feel from what I did was rarely an option for me before this day. I’d given in to the idea that if I was ill, my body was craving some sort of recovery, recuperation, rest, revival, rejuvenation, refurbishment, re….. anything, except, life as normal. My definition of health was “without ill-health.” and with that small slip in my mental process, I’d made a big foray into self-criticism.

Courage is a funny word when applied to health, especially if you apply the model of “ill-health” being a sign of things gone wrong. But if you include ill-health in health, then what it does is to cause you to find courage, one of the most important ingredients for any sport, business, relationship or parental success. The courage to overcome how you feel in order to do what you gotta do.

This, mental state of fix the feelings led to lack of courage to deal with reality in my ill-health – health balance also translated into other areas of my life. Instead of staying on track and finding work-arounds for those times when I didn’t feel great about something, I’d take the feelings and lack of motivation as some sort of sign that “something was wrong.”

I remember it well in the Australian rowing championships when, after two years training in an eight man crew we were leading in the final race. It was an Olympic year, and a win would guarantee both crew and coach a strong position in selection for the Olympics. Two boat lengths in front at the 1,000 meter mark is an almost unbeatable lead, only 1,000 meters to row, 500 of which was the finishing sprint. All we had to do, was maintain the advantage and exhaust any attempt to catch us. Suddenly our boat went dead, suddenly things didn’t feel good, suddenly ill-health made the boat slow, and in the next 200 meters we were overtaken. Instead of having the courage to stay on the work rate and trust the crew, I panicked, called for extra effort (the equivalent of going to the doctor in hay fever season) – and most probably, because of that reaction to the feel of the boat, ill-health, guaranteed we’d lose the race. We never recovered from that reaction, the adrenalin we were meant to be saving for the sprint to the finish kicked in too early, we lost by half a boat length, a disaster.

Nature never moves in straight lines, so our health of our body, mind, business, relationship, friendship, finances is going to be a blend of feel good and feel bad times. Reacting to either of these is going to sabotage what you want to achieve in the long term for how you want to feel in the short term.

Courage is a most misunderstood word, a talent that is most often missing in new age rhetoric, or even medical guidance for health. Take for example my friend who, boasted to me for three years how healthy and strong they felt, but was diagnosed with cancer. Their ill-health was there, it was just hidden from view.

Courage means the capacity to overcome current circumstances. The primary circumstances, to overcome, are internal, things within us, primarily emotions that don’t feel good, like lost hope or exhaustion, sadness or disappointment. When we have those inner emotions – those mind states – we think we’re alone and therefore something is wrong with us. Little do we realise that everyone else is faking it too. That whether it be in a rowing race, a business, relationship or parenting, everyone else is feeling those ill-health emotions – and the only difference between us and them, is our reaction.

Courage means not react for the purpose of negating the feeling. Courage means to pursue the goal, to turn up regardless. To “get over it” and stay focussed.

Courage comes from two sources. Superiority or Daring. Superiority to circumstances means you see a bigger picture than the feelings that currently challenge you or see a bigger awareness than the current circumstances that challenge you – I call this nature’s law, you might have other ‘models” that help you see the order in the chaos…. Whatever it is, that model must be continually expanding, otherwise, what helped you through last year will be what holds you back this year.

Courage also comes from having the guts to try. I call this faith, belief in something bigger than your own limited capacity to always be in perfect control, to, in short, trust something bigger than you. That, religious, sense of higher order, can come from so many places, and must be carefully tempered. Such courage can be cruel if instinct and impulse are not merged. Either of them alone, can cause us to act on our animal nature with scant regard for the consequences of our actions on others.

Health includes ill-health and my discovery has been that there are good days and bad, and it’s better not to make your performance conditional on either. Have the courage to do what you love, be what you love, and give what you love, regardless.
