“Food, glorious food! Hot sausage and mustard!” So the urchins sang in the musical “Oliver!” Food certainly plays a major role in our lives. It can do far more than give us energy… it can help us feel good, it can enhance our social lives, it’s the centerpiece of many holidays and social traditions. It can be very pleasurable!

Pleasurable yes! Healthy, not always. So what is the basic purpose of food and how does it affect our health?

The basic purpose of food is to provide nutrients to the body so that it can function. Certain nutrients are necessary to combine with oxygen to create energy for physical activity and for all internal functions, including repairing and building cell tissue.

But food and nutrition don’t always go “hand in hand.” And without nutrition, the body can’t function its best. Health and energy ultimately suffer.

Definition of Nutrition

Nutrition simply means something that nourishes. To nourish means “to feed or sustain with substances necessary to life and growth.” Not everything that is called “food” contains nourishment! And just because a product has a nutrition facts label, that is no guarantee that there’s any nutrition in it. That’s why “junk food” is called “junk” – because it has a lot of calories but no real nourishment – no nutritional value!

Nutrition: Macronutrients and Micronutrients

The nutrients that the body needs for energy and to provide the building material for cells, tissues, muscles, bones, hormones, etc. etc. (all physical structure and bodily processes) are broken into two categories: Macronutrients and micronutrients.

Macronutrients are called “macro” (meaning “large”) because they form the largest percentage of the nutrients the body needs to function. The macronutrients are:

  • Carbohydrate
  • Fats (also called lipids)
  • Protein and
  • Water

Micronutrients are called “micro” (meaning “small”) because they are needed by the body in very small quantities. The micronutrients are:

  • Vitamins
  • Minerals

The body needs all of these nutrients in balanced quantities to achieve good physical health and to operate at its best.

Food and nutrition

Before the advent of convenience and fast foods, food and nutrition wasn’t an issue. Food WAS nutritious! Interesting how there are now epidemics of diabetes, obesity and many other health problems since the nutritional quality of our food supply has deteriorated. Food processing to the degree that is found in fast foods and convenience foods not only robs food of most of its nutritional value, but the pesticides, preservatives and additives that can be found in processed food is toxic to the body.

Food, nutrition and health

Learning the basic facts about the nutrition (or not) in food and how it contributes to health (or doesn’t) is probably the smartest thing someone could do to improve their health and energy. Believe me, there are truckloads of false data and myths about food and nutrition that keep people from enjoying better health and vitality.

Food manufacturers with their slick marketing and advertising make matters worse! It appeals to our taste buds and emotions, but processed food eaten on a regular basis, as most Americans do at this point in time, takes a serious toll on health and energy.

The person who said “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” was not kidding!

Food for the Body, Nourishment for the Soul

Almost everyday there is a new article or news item about food. Everyday we pick and choose what we want to eat whether it fits someone’s idea of “balanced” or not. We read about superfoods, whole foods, organic foods, genetically engineered food, packaged food – for the body. But what about food for the soul?

I used to think that the soul was fed only through the study of sacred scriptures – the Bible, the Vedas, the Tao Te Ching, for example. I still believe their teachings are valuable, but they are only one course in a three course meal for the soul.  Scripture is perhaps the “main course” because if we listen closely, we may hear the voice of the Divine and learn valuable lessons from the sacred teachings that have come down through the ages.

If scriptures are the main course then, to me, beauty is the appetizer. Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, my idea of beauty may be entirely different from yours. That’s not just okay – that’s fantastic because there is so much beauty to behold. Beauty comes to us through each of the senses so we’re continuously presented with it in some form, if we are awake and aware enough to notice.

For me beauty to enjoy with my sense of sight is all around me – everywhere I look. I especially love the beauty  in nature – flowers, trees, clouds, clear sky. But I revel in the beauty of  a child’s face (especially the faces of my grandsons), any painting by Monet, lovely fabric, a seascape, and sunrises and sunsets. That’s just the beginning – my list is endless. Almost everywhere I look I see beauty.

My hearing is thrilled with sounds of the ocean in its constant ebb and flow (it’s hard to hear it on the desert but a CD will give you the same feeling), the birds singing outside my window, or a child’s laughter. Bach’s “Sleepers Awake!” (Cantata 140) – or almost anything by Bach – makes my soul soar, and hearing my sons’ calling “Hey, Mom!” brings it even more joy.

My taste? Oh, it has to be chocolate in any form, Maryland crab cakes, a great cup of coffee or a glass of vintage Cabernet Sauvignon. On a hot day, nothing tastes better than a glass of cold, pure, spring water or a tasty glass of lemonade. These feed my body and my soul simultaneously.

What tickles my sense of smell? The sweet smell of a baby’s skin, the scent of any flower, the air right after it rains, cinnamon, cookies baking and lavender. With any of these, if I close my eyes and inhale I can feel my soul expand.

And then there’s touch. I think of a wonderful massage that kneads my tight, tired muscles and helps every muscle relax, or the feel of silk on my skin, or the gentle touch of someone who loves me. When my sons were babies they would reach up and touch my face with their tiny hand bringing almost more soul expanding joy than I could take in.

So we have beauty as the appetizer coming in through the senses and the sacred writings as the main course. Now, what’s for dessert?

Love is the dessert. Think about what is said of love: Love makes the world go around; Love heals; Perfect love casts out fear: Love conquers all; God is love. Science has proved that feeling loved creates positive change in the body at a cellular level and stimulates the secretion of endorphins –  the “feel-good” hormones.  It stimulates the immune system to help your body heal itself. Poets have written about love from the beginning of poetry and love songs have been written and sung over the ages. Preachers have preached about it, advertisers exploit it to sell a product, and now scientists are studying it. We all want it, some long for it, some die for it. Love – the sweetest dessert.

The poet, Rumi, said “The soul is here for its own joy.” We are offered so much “soul food” – teachings, beauty, love. It’s up to you to reach out to take it. And your taking all you want doesn’t diminish the supply for anyone else. So now is the time to feast. I love the little poem by Hafiz that says just this:

Let’s Eat

Why
Just show you God’s menu?
Hell, we are all
starving -
Let’s eat.

Health and Wellness is Key to Longevity

Looking for the answers to longevity of life? Expecting to live longer than those of the previous generation? This is something that most people are looking for. Having a life that is complete and full of successful achievements and done in great health is highly sought after. There is no mystery to living a long and healthy life.

Health and wellness can open the door to a long and healthy life. Wellness is in simpler terms described as the state of well-being. This can also be defined as ones overall vitality of life in every aspect is brought into complete balance and wholeness. With this a person’s health is a portion of their overall wellness state.

Health and Wellness in Eating

Health and wellness is most commonly thought about when one is either ill or need to lose weight. Is there extra pounds on those thighs? Stomach rounding out more than desired? This is where many people start on their journey. Losing weight is a product to bring the physical body inside into balance.

Eating the right foods is very crucial in bringing a balance to a person’s diet. It is a good idea to start out eating right gradually. This is done to slowly give the body a new habit. This new eating habit needs to be done at a slow and consistent pace. Start out by swapping certain foods for newer foods as well as food substitutions.

For example, If meals that are eaten contain vegetables that are canned then transition gradually to fresh vegetables or even some frozen. This can slowly work up to eating fresh all natural or organic vegetables. This method can be used in all the food categories as the eating transition begins.

Another example, change how food is cooked. Do less frying food and bake food. Use more herbs to season and flavor food and less salt. This helps change the taste buds and allows them to experience new flavors and new foods.

Exercise

The next component in health and wellness that people know about is exercise. Balancing the body does require the whole physical body, inside and out. Need to tighten the stomach muscles? See a ‘love handle’ that has multiplied? This is what many people see in the mirror and motivates them to lose weight.

Exercising the body can assist in the improvement of organ functioning and the blood circulation in the body. Doing cardio workouts can help build a stronger heart. Find a routine that gets the blood pumping without overextending the body in physical exercise.

Gradually increase the physical activity by taking short walks, doing stairs, and targeted dance workouts. Exercise is good for assisting in longevity in life. It has been known that many people have lived longer lives with exercise. As the eating habits change weight will slowly shed off. Then once increased activity occurs the weight will come off quicker.

Complete Balance

There are more aspects to wellness than health. Here are a few areas that wellness stretches to:

1. Social Wellness

2. Occupational Wellness

3. Spiritual Wellness

4. Physical Wellness

5. Intellectual Wellness

6. Emotional Wellness

Though you do not like the thought of guzzling gallons of water every day, remember that it greatly contributes to your over-all health.

As you incorporate food necessary for hair growth into your diet, be aware that there are foods that can contribute negatively to the health of your hair. These include sugar, caffeine, carbonated drinks and fat. Remember to include the proper nutrients into your everyday diet, or supplement them with vitamins to have healthier, more beautiful hair that you never thought possible.

4 Healthy Habits We Love to Hate

Living a healthy lifestyle is often not as hard as we make it out to be. We all know what to do, but just can’t seem to bring ourselves to do it consistently. Instead of engaging in the activities that will ensure our health, which ensures our quality of life, we prefer to medicate or ignore. Bad habits and healthy habits have one thing in common…they are both habits, and habits can be changed, eliminated, or created. Here are the 4 Healthy Habits We Love to Hate.

Habit #1: Drink! Water That Is

Many of the sodas and juices we drink several times a day can give us more calories than the food we eat. As an experiment, a young man eliminated the 5 – 6 sodas he drank daily from his diet, and within a month, he lost 15 pounds with no additional changes to this diet. While sodas and juices do contain some water, it contains far more sugar, syrup and chemical sweetners than what can be considered healthy. In fact, sometimes after drinking soda or juice, you are left even thirstier than before!

Water is necessary for healthy living. Our bodies are mostly water. Without enough water, we can become dehydrated which causes all sorts of problems, including headaches, loss of energy, and lack of full body function. Water doesn’t have the sweet taste of our manufactured drinks. However, it does have the distinction of being necessary for life, and for healthy living. Sugary drinks always taste good in the short term. Water is always the best choice for your health in the long term. When short term and long term goals conflict, always choose the long term. Water is your friend. Get rid of the imposters.

Habit #2: Sleep Until You Are Done

We are perpetually tired. Between stress and lack of sleep, we are falling asleep at red lights or while actively driving, we walk into walls, spill our drinks, make simple mistakes that often have big consequences, and we have close to no mental clarity. Sleep is our body’s method of rejuvenation, and allowing our minds the time it needs to organize our thoughts and memories for clarity and recall. We often think that sleeping less means we’ll get more done, but the opposite is actually true.

If you find yourself waking up tired and remaining tired all day, go to bed earlier. Record your favorite late night shows and watch them during your waking hours. Cut out some of your social networking time, internet surfing and game playing time, and your late night channel hopping. Instead, get to bed. Slow down your thinking by realizing that while in bed, you can’t do anything about the work you left at the job, the people that wronged you, or the thing you forgot to do today. Rest your mind and body. That is the only way to be fully prepared for what tomorrow will bring, and to accomplish your to do list completely. Don’t just sleep enough to function. Sleep enough to function well.

Habit #3: Move Your Body

Our ancestors had to exercise in order to eat, whether they had to hunt or grow their food. With the advent of the take out menu, many jobs that leave us sitting all day long, and mind sucking television shows, we just can’t seem to find time to exercise. If we aren’t burning more calories than we eat, we gain weight, which can lead to one of many health issues later down the line.

If you are a “go to the gym” type of person, find a way to fit it into your schedule and then stick with it. Identify a work out buddy that can help keep you motivated and have fun. If you are more of a game person, pick a sport that you love and play it several times a week. If you are a studio person, aerobics, yoga, and martial arts are all great ways to get moving. Movement is the energy of living. Lack of motion is the energy of life ending.

Habit #4: Eat to Live, Don’t Live to Eat

We all know we need to eat fresh, vibrant, nutritious foods. Yet, we settle for fake foods, or foods with so much sugar or preservatives that it no longer resembles what it was intended to be. The problem is speed, a sweet tooth, and the need to pacify.

We have become so busy in our lives that we rush, even when we don’t need to. Rather than taking the time to prepare a healthy meal and share it with our families, we buy something on the way home. If we do prepare foods at home, we microwave it, pull it out of a can, or fry it up. Instead, let’s slow down when it comes to our food. Meals with family should be about health…healthy foods, healthy family time together, and healthy conversation.

In addition to rushing, we love our sweets. Some of us are so conditioned to eat sweets that even when we know we no longer like them, we still have to have them. When you have a sweet tooth, choose yogurt or a citrus fruit. When you need a pick-me-up, choose nuts, carrot sticks, or another fruit or vegetable you enjoy. Let’s put down the candy and cakes and pick up something we’ll be proud to eat!

Comfort foods are all around us. When we feel stressed or have a challenging day, there are those foods that we often have to have to help us unwind. Let’s make that choice a healthy one going forward. The problem is that many of our unhealthy choices make things worse. Sugar gives us the fast up and the fast crash. Fried foods and foods with a lot of preservatives can increase our blood pressure and leave us with the general feeling physically bad. Fast foods can do all of the above. From this point on, eat foods that will add quality to your life and leave the rest behind.
