If you are fortunate enough to live a great and happy life I am happy for you and with you. I know that in order for this to be true you have made some very focused decisions about what you want for your self and have committed considerable time and attention to those decisions.

If you are fortunate enough to live a great and happy life I know you have clarified what is important to you and know what you value most. You have determined your priorities and have made space for them to thrive within your life. You have mastered time rather than just manage it. You practice forgiveness everyday.

If you are fortunate enough to live a great and happy life I know you surround yourself with supportive people and are satisfied deeply with your relationships and with the work you do in the world for yourself, your family and your community.

You are open to change and unfettered by regrets.

If you are fortunate enough to live a great and happy life I know you get out into nature everyday and enter the silence; nurture solitude. You understand the difference between the two and you respect the power of each.

If you are fortunate enough to live a great and happy life I know you appreciate beauty and share your appreciation with others. You know all life is a miracle and you see yourself as one of those miracles.

If you are fortunate enough to live a great and happy life I know you are an expert at self care and make choices and develop habits that enhance your physical well-being. I know you laugh easily and radiate love and compassion effortlessly.

If you are fortunate enough to live a great and happy life I know you have made peace with your past, live in the present moment and look toward tomorrow with excitement and enthusiasm.

Here are 4 simple ways to stay on that path of a great and happy life:

*Breathe

Realize that we are all part of the cycles and rhythms of life and we connect to these with our breath. Each breath is a re-commitment to our lives and prayer of gratitude. We can choose and re-choose what we are committed to and we have the authority to change our minds whenever it is appropriate.

*Relax

Ease into life with a trusting heart, a generous nature and a willingness to yield to the greater good when need be. Fear has no hold on us. We are empowered to be masters of compassionate self-care. Relax your shoulders, relax your expectations and relax your judgments. Practice the practice of relaxation.

*Laugh

Humor is the language of the soul, a sacred understanding that all is Divinely guided. When we live with lightheartedness we are free to deepen our sense of peacefulness and kindness. We have courage to experience the joy in life.

*Love

Love is the only thing that really keeps us safe. When we are safe we are free to trust our true nature. We are available to life as it calls us forward. We become skilled at giving and receiving love. We are important stewards of love and beauty will prevail.

Happiness Lies Within – Happiness is an Inside Job

Yet most people look outside themselves to find happiness. They think things and people can bring them happiness.

Nothing, absolutely nothing outside of you will ever bring you happiness. It can’t. Everything outside you is ephemeral–temporary.

I read an interesting post on Twitter yesterday,. The original statement was, “Money can’t buy you happiness.” The response was, “Are you kidding? Do you live in the US? Money can buy you a wave runner. Did you ever see anyone on a wave runner not smiling?”

I wonder what that responder does when not riding the wave runner that makes her happy. How about you?

If you look to someone or something outside yourself to make you feel happy then what happens when that someone or something cannot be with you? Duh.

Things and people come and go. The only one on whom you can depend your whole life long is you.

The fact is happiness lies within.

You do have folders deep in your subconscious mind for being happy. The problem is somewhere along the line you stopped fueling those folders and created new folders saying you are unhappy. And, following the general mood of society, you constantly fill those unhappy folders with evidence that life is crummy.

Whatever you focus on expands, quite literally, in those file folders. Think of each event that you interpret as making you unhappy as a sheet of paper, a document that you put into your unhappy file folder.

The more you put in there the more that folder expands – until ultimately it bursts and you get sick or hurt.

Happiness lies within – not outside of you. You were born happy. Go within to find the happiness that still lives there–buried by years of frustration and inaccurate thinking.

Decide to make yourself happy. Draw on the documents of happiness from the happy folder. Feed that folder with new events that leave you feeling happy. As it grows your life will change dramatically into one of happiness.

Meditate or self-hypnotize and you will find your own answers within.

And take a moment to ask yourself if what you do every day has not let you create a reality of happiness yet, will your world look any different tomorrow?

The Power of Self-Approval

Do you want more happiness in your life? Are you tired of compromising your happiness for that of others? Have you ever stopped to think about why you behave in certain ways? Do you ever wonder why celebrities and people in the lime light seem to crave all that attention?

Well, one theory is that we behave in order to gain approval from others. This may seem far fetched but think about it for a minute. Everything we do in life can boil down to 2 fundamental needs: the need to be loved and the need to be helped. As such, our actions tend to be determined by our ability to please others. This stems from the fact that our mind operates in a primitive survival mode looking to protect us at all costs. This survival mentality was originally formed during our early childhood where, as dependent helpless babies, we learned that it was necessary to please our parents (or caregivers) in order to get what we wanted whether it be food or milk, and so forth. If we didn’t gain this approval, we feared the worst – that we would perish. Fortunately, we are no longer dependent children needing others approval in order to survive. However, our conditioning has ingrained in us this need to please others eventhough it no longer makes sense to do so.

As such, one of our biggest obstacles to happiness in life is our need for approval from others or our need to prove ourselves, our fear of disapproval, and our fear of rejection. It is solely based on survival! Now, the need for survival is gone but the habit remains.

It is important to realize that when we try to please others we are always at the mercy of someone else’s response, and thus we have no control over the outcome. When we act in accordance with other people’s approval, we are saying that their agenda is more important than ours. We are saying that they are more important than us! According to Abraham Maslow, the world renowned psychologist, “The highest state of man is self-actualization. And the essence of self-actualization is freedom from the good opinion of others.” Thus, in order to be truly happy we must dissociate from the bad and good opinion of others. We must learn to approve of ourselves and realize that each and everyone of us is a unique and special person capable of tremendous things. It is critical to understand that we all live in our own little “bubble”. We are unique in the meanings that we attach to the information and events in our lives. Simply stated, two people experiencing the same event or information will give different meanings to each based on their own personal experience, upbringing, programming, and paradigms. For instance, the word “battle” may elicit a different mental image or meaning to you then it would to me. As such, how can we seek others approval when they are mostly likely operating in a different paradigm than we are? As Stuart Wilde once said “I am what I am and that’s my evolution, what others perceive of me is part of their evolution.”

We must also consider that when someone judges somebody or something else, it says little about the target of their judgment and volumes about them self.

In conclusion, to achieve true happiness in your life you must stop worrying about what others think of you. Remember, their comments are more a reflection of them than you. When you take something personally, you are showing that you agree with their opinion and showing that you don’t understand their perspective. You also position yourself as prey to their predatory remarks. Just because someone puts poison on your plate doesn’t mean that you have to eat it because as Eleanor Roosevelt once said “What others think of me is none of my business!”

So, my challenge to you over the next week is to acknowledge, yet dissociate yourself, from the comments of others, good and bad. Remember, every coin has two sides. Meaning that if you accept someone’s positive praise you will obviously feel good, but what happens the next time when that person does not give you any praise for the same action? You will most likely feel a void. As such, attempt to dissociate yourself from others remarks and simply be happy with who you are and what you have done. In time, happiness will be felt when you choose, not others!

Here are some simple yet important ways for finding happiness in your life. It can be easier than you think!

Decide what your life purpose is. Nothing will bring you joy more than knowing what it is that you are on this earth for. Not knowing keeps you on an endless cycle of searching for meaning in life. Above all, DECIDE WHAT YOUR UNIQUE PURPOSE IS – then fulfil it! Purpose is not something you must keep searching for – it is something YOU CHOOSE. Living without purpose will cause frustration. Living purposefully in line with what you believe will bring you deep satisfaction and joy!

Expect more of yourself. Don’t settle for being mediocre. That will leave you feeling unfulfilled. Always look for ways to expect more of the life you create for yourself. Dennis Waitley said, “Life is a self-fulfilling prophecy. You may not get what you want, but in the long run you will get what you expect.” So expect and imagine great things for your life and find excitement and joy in your bolder visions.

Give more than you take. Find ways to contribute back to society. Acts of kindness, even doing something as simple as smiling at people as you walk down the street, all contribute to a happier and more joyful world. When you give to others, you ultimately give to yourself.

Do the best you can to feel good every day. Indulge yourself sometimes. Make a list of all the things that make you feel really, really good and do something from that list as often as possible. Joseph Campbell made a very profound statement. He said, “Follow Your Bliss. When you follow your bliss…Doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors; and where there wouldn’t be a door for anyone else.” Decide what makes you feel really, really good? Then, do that.

Have a good laugh – no, have a great laugh! Most people are just too serious. We need to laugh a little. Make laughing a daily habit. This life is to be enjoyed! The next time watch a movie choose a comedy and have a great laugh. Share your laughter with others – it’s infectious.

Be grateful. It has been reported that grateful people report higher levels of positive emotions, life satisfaction, vitality, optimism and lower levels of depression and stress. A simple process of writing down the things that you are grateful for every day can enhance your perception of life dramatically.

Happiness can be yours. Find ways to express it, pursue it and share it with others.

Sometimes it appears that life throws more obstacles in our path than we can handle. However, even in the face of the most challenging circumstances, you can make the choice to be happy by following these 9 paths to happiness.

1. Honor Yourself: Remember what the flight attendant says, “Put your own oxygen mask on first.” You are of no use to anyone else if you have not taken care of your own needs first – this includes your own emotional, as well as physical, well-being.

2. Forgive Everyone For Everything: Forgiveness is a gift to yourself. YOU created the stress in your life by getting angry, and YOU can instantly remove that stress by granting forgiveness. Expressing your forgiveness to the other is optional – internalizing that forgiveness is required in order to live a joyful life. Don’t forget to also forgive yourself for everything you regret ever having done or not done.

3. Have Gratitude For All Of Life: As with forgiveness, gratitude is a gift to yourself. Saying “thank you” is a powerful way to create great relationships, but the real power of gratitude is internalizing an immense thankfulness for your very existence – everything that has ever occurred or failed to occur in your life.

4. Respect Your Mind: Faith is powerful, but it is no substitute for observing, paying attention, weighing alternatives, and choosing with intention. Without conscious choice, there is no freedom or happiness.

5. Design Your Future: Don’t be a passive tumbleweed blown by the winds of life. Envision the future you want, and then take action to create that future. Often, you will fail. Plan again and take action again.

6. Begin Today, and Never Give Up: There is no better time to begin than today – each and every “today.” When obstacles stop you, think of new ways to reach your goals. In the words of the Oriental proverb, “Fall seven times, stand up eight.”

7. Be Of Service To Others By Radiating Happiness: Being of service is one of the greatest paths to happiness, but remember that your greatest service to others is the person that you are, rather than the tasks you accomplish. Your greatest gift to others is to give them happiness, and by far the most powerful way to do that is to be an example of happiness and to radiate that happiness to others.

8. Dance Lightly With Life: Life does not have to be a serious undertaking. You will make mistakes, you will feel regrets, and eventually, you will die – so what? Happiness comes from dancing lightly with life – playing hopscotch on the river of life – leaping gracefully from joy to joy while laughing at the threats of calamity – even laughing hysterically at our human frailness when we do fall into the muddy torrent.

9. Know Unity With Spirit: There are as many ways to connect with Spirit as there are people – each of us has our own way to receive strength and serenity from the Infinite. Your life will be happier if you acknowledge that you are not alone, become open to that presence, and create ritual to celebrate your connection. You may feel your bond with Spirit at the Lord’s Supper, in Songs of Praise, in Calls to Prayer, in Meditation, while doing Yoga or Qigong, or while walking in the woods. However you connect with Spirit, do it today.

Happiness Today – Easy Ways to Find Joy and Happiness Naturally

There are many ways to bring joy into your life naturally, without spending money on therapy or prescription drugs. Look for ways to be happy through your experiences, instead of material things. Here are a few life changes you can make now to brighten up your days.

Sunshine

Sunshine is the best way to get your daily amount of Vitamin D. A lack of Vitamin D is linked with depression. 15 minutes a day is all it takes. If you live in a cloudy part of the world, a natural sunlamp is effective too.

What are you listening to?

Music is an important part of life. It doesn’t matter what genre of music you listen to — if it makes you happy, you need to make it a part of your daily life. Turn up the volume while you are cleaning the house or listening to the iPod on the way to work. I also like personal development audiobooks. Look in the bookstore in the Self-Help section for authors such as Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer and Louise Hay.

Media Overload

Step away from the Blackberry! Set specific times throughout the day to check email. Morning, afternoon and evening works best. Turn off the notifications. How much news do you watch or read on a daily basis? Try going on a news fast. Limit how much news you are exposed to everyday. And one more suggestion: turn off the computer at least 2 hours before going to sleep.

Meditation

Create an alter as a sanctuary with objects that make you happy. Pictures of loved ones, a souvenir from a fun trip, religious symbols. Meditation takes practice and there is no immediate or calculated result. In my own words, meditation is about sitting down and shutting up. Yes, your first few attempts at silence won’t be successful. Your mind will be flurrying with what’s for dinner and what you forgot to put on the to-do list. But maybe that’s the point. Sit down and listen to the sounds around you. Be present. The more you practice meditation, the more peaceful it will seem. There are many different types of meditation. Find one that works for you and that you feel comfortable with.

Positive People Energy

Who are you spending time with? Limit time with friends or family that consume your energy or give off negative energy. Find friends that inspire you, make you laugh and have positive energy. Make them an important part of your life.

Laughter is the Best Medicine

Now I know this may seem silly, but if you’re reading this article, then you need to bring some more silliness into your life. Rent a season of the TV show Will and Grace. Or choose another favorite sitcom. Purchase a couple of DVD sets and pull them out whenever you need a pick-me-up.

Happiness Is Only A Thought Away

Do you want to be happy in your life? Not the constant blissed out happiness of flower children, but genuine happiness on a day to day basis. Happiness is only a thought away. What do I mean by that? One of the key indicators of how happy you feel is how optimistic you are and one of the causes of optimism is how you talk to yourself. In a previous issue, we talked about your internal guidance system and touched on self talk. This month I would like to explore this concept a bit further.

When you make a mistake – do you beat up on yourself? Do you call yourself names like “stupid”, “failure” or “idiot”. Do you “should” all over yourself, “I should be doing this” or “I shouldn’t be doing that”. When we were born, we did not have these negative critics in our head. As we grew, we adopted them into ourselves from our parents, teachers and other kids.

Most of us learnt the art of criticism really well – after all we didn’t want to get above ourselves did we? In fact many of us learnt the lessons so well, that we outdid the originators of the criticism. Whatever they said, we thought it twice as strong and twice as fast. Sort of like if mum was going to send us to our room for 5 minutes time out for something we had done, however we had already sent ourselves to our rooms and decided to lock ourselves in for a whole year, not eat for a week and remove the TV for good.
So what can you do about it? Martin Seligman in his groundbreaking book “Learned Optimism” gives some simple tools to turn around your thoughts.

1.    Listen to your self-talk. When do you do it most? What do you say to yourself? Would you speak to your small children the same way that you talk to yourself? Are your “shoulds” realistic measures of you or are they setting unrealistic benchmarks for your behaviour?
2.    Think about some times when your behaviour contradicted the self talk (eg: if you think you are a bad mum, then find some examples of when you were a good mum).
3.    Find some different explanations for the situation or event. This is not about justification, it is about finding different possibilities. (eg: It could be that the person that yelled at you for something you did was having a bad day and their anger really had nothing to do with you)
4.    Distract yourself from going over and over the bad thoughts. Tie your worries onto a worry tree or a into a worry basket and come back to them later if you really have to. Find other “lighter” thoughts to think about. Listen to music, do some exercise – anything to interrupt the flow of negative thoughts.
5.    Question your underlying beliefs (eg: I must be liked by everyone I meet, I must be completely competant and make no mistakes ever if I am worthwhile, it is easier to put off something unpleasant than deal with it). Underlying beliefs can be hard to shift, but they are not impossible.

So if you really want to be happy in your life, listen to your self talk and take some action.
