Healthy Body – Healthy Mind!

bodybuilderBy Gary Ryan Blair -

More than two thousand years ago, Hippocrates, the Greek physician and father of medicine, said, “A wise man ought to realize that health is the most valuable possession.”

We are obliged to Hippocrates’ and others from the past for

reminding us that fitness and health is not just a new and passing phenomenon and neither are the ways to achieve and maintain good health.

The fundamentals of good health, known and proven for so

long, are available to anyone who decides they want to fully enjoy the enormous benefits of healthy living.

The reality of this lesson is brought home in the compelling story from over a century ago of an American boy, sickly and weakened by childhood diseases, who sought a refuge from his physical handicaps in a love of books and reading. As time went on, just as his mind grew strong from his studies, his body continued to fail.

His concerned father at last told his 12-year old son, “You have the mind but not the body, and without the help of the body the mind cannot go as far as it should. You must make your body know you will do it!” And the wise father then gave the boy weights and other gymnastic equipment and worked with him to strengthen his frail young body.

Well, this story has a remarkably happy ending. The boy heeded his father’s encouragement, and not only worked hard to rebuild his health, but became a superior athlete, graduated from Harvard University and went on to lead a vigorously active life of eminent achievement. This once-sickly boy eventually became the 26th president of the United States. He was Theodore Roosevelt, who at age 42, was and is the youngest man ever to become president.

Throughout his life, Roosevelt practiced what he called, “the

strenuous life.” His energetic commitment to physical activities

included boxing, horseback riding, swimming and hiking among others.

Teddy Roosevelt discovered that an important foundation for good

health is movement and activity. He demonstrated that our bodies are

designed to get stronger as they are constantly used and challenged

with purposeful physical activities.

Teddy Roosevelt, incidentally, was a great outdoorsman and probably

knew more about natural science than any other President who has ever

been in office, and some of his most notable achievements were in the

area of conservation. He added about 150 million acres to the

national forests, set up five new national parks, created the first

51 federal bird reservations and established the first four national

game preserves. He loved nature and worked to preserve the

environment for future generations.

Roosevelt undoubtedly agreed with Hippocrates view that, “The first

wealth is health.” And with the old proverb that takes Hippocrates

idea one step further by saying, “Health is better than wealth.”

Because Teddy Roosevelt’s life dramatically exemplifies the

life-changing power of achieving and maintaining good health. The

simple moral to his story is that nothing is more essential to

building a successful life than good health.

As Teddy Roosevelt showed us, the secrets to good health are not

complicated. They are known and waiting for you to discover them and,

most important, to put them into practice. The blessings and joys of

good health and fitness can be yours when you choose to make them

priorities in your life.

Good health, you know, means having the capacity to live life fully

and being able to experience the best that life has to offer. It

means having vigor and energy. It is having the ability to pursue

your dreams with the confidence that you will be able to accomplish

them.

It’s doubtful that Teddy Roosevelt would have accomplished much in

his life had it not been for the words of advice from his father

about developing his body in addition to his mind. It’s worth

thinking about, especially these days when so many of us live

sedentary existences. We can only go where our bodies can take us,

and our bodies need exercise to stay healthy and strong. So remember:

build both your body and your mind. They’re a powerful combination.

Teddy Roosevelt proved it.

Action to be taken: Commit to a firm set of health related goals and

get yourself in the best physical shape starting today.

Everything Counts!

Feed Your Mind Healthy Thoughts Or Others Will Try To Feed It Junk

beliefslrgBy Michael Twomey –

In this article I want to share with you something that is becoming more and more important in this chaotic world we live in.

You can carry around something with you everywhere that can help you to feel more in control of your life and to feel better even under stress.

One method is completely free and the other method is only a small investment in yourself.

I will tell you how to do this soon, yet first I will share some background about why this is so important. This way you will realize the importance and will find yourself more motivated to do this simple trick.

What you allow inside your mind can have even greater impact on your health and success than the foods you eat.

Ideally, you want to eat the foods that are healthy and allow you to feel your best. The same is true for thoughts, suggestions, and images.

Ideally we want to feed our bodies when we are hungry and are able to digest the food. The same is also true for our thoughts, suggestions, beliefs and images.

Just as some people eat breakfast, lunch and diner you will want to adopt this habit with your mind.

As you wake up in the morning and as you are drifting off to sleep at night you will want to use this trick that I am about to share with you.

We are constantly bombarded with stimulus. This can come from sights, sounds, scents, textures and this can become overwhelming.

Especially, during the holiday season we can be manipulated more easily because of the added stress.

One of the best gifts anyone can get for themselves or for others is the gift of better stress management and relaxation.

Just as some junk foods can clog up arteries or at least leave you feeling sluggish or bloated, the same is true junk thoughts.

Junk thoughts, images and suggestions can leave a negative impact on your health, happiness and well being and success.

It is very important to get the right amount of sleep, rest and relaxation as well as the right nutrition.

So when people are stressed, rushed and overwhelmed it is even more important to
feel more balanced and centered.

Our thoughts and breathing are the simplest and more powerful ways to manage stress and feel better instantly!

What will it feel like when you learn a simple method of self hypnosis that can
help you guide yourself to that place of comfort and safety?

How much will that mini vacation be worth when it helps reduce your stress and lets
you feel more in charge of what is going on around you?

STEPS:

1. Sit down and relax your breathing and consider what thoughts, images and suggestions can help you to really feel relaxed and centered.

2. Write down positive suggestions to yourself on an index card or small piece of paper that you can carry around with you.

3. You may also want to carry a picture of a place that makes you feel very calm and serene and peaceful. Write the positive self talk on the paper and read it to yourself silently and really feel the difference.

4. You can take out your card, pictures, etc. several times during the day for a quick mini vacation.

5. You will want to focus on doing this in the morning as you are still in a dreamy, drowsy state that is similar to hypnosis. The suggestions and images will slide right in more smoothly.

6. Also, at night as you are starting to drift into sleep you can
look at your peaceful, calming pictures and read the positive suggestions to yourself softly just as
you are drifting off to a wonderful and pleasant sleep…

Important Note :

Word your suggestions on a positive way so that your subconscious mind will understand them and act on them.

Instead of writing “I do not want to eat so much.”
Write : “I am doing my best to eat healthy foods and think healthy thoughts.”

Instead of writing “I hate how stress makes me feel bad.”
Write : “I am breathing and relaxing and feeding my mind peaceful and calming images, thoughts and beliefs and I am enjoying the benefits.”

Another tip is to get hypnosis recordings that have calming music and positive suggestions and will help you create new healthy habits about what you are feeding your mind.

Change Your Mind to Healthy and Your Body Will Follow

perfect!By Carolyn Hansen -

The debate continues over which eating plan and which exercise program is the best one to get fitness and weight loss results. Most people forget that there is something that must come first to make any diet or exercise program work.

It is your own ability to take action – your own personal power is your ultimate success factor. Fitness success comes down to your ability to motivate yourself to take consistent action and to keep working to change negative habits and replace them with healthier options.

Your motivation to act and to put the things you need to do into action consistently is way more important than which specific nutrition or training plan you choose. Your motivation to act is the ultimate key to success and yet this is the also the single most neglected aspect of achieving health and fitness success.

Many people have chosen a plan of action but fail to act on it. They don’t get it done, they don’t follow through, and they don’t stick with it. You see, the key to all success whether it is fitness improvement, weight loss, health enhancement, muscle toning, energy increase, and so on, has nothing to do with exercising more or dieting harder.

In fact it has nothing at all to do with either of those two techniques. If you have decided to want to change something it makes good sense that you are going to have to do something different than what you have been doing to get you to this point. Take a good look at the way you think about yourself.

If you think of yourself as not being able to eat healthy foods or stick to a fitness program, or someone who is constantly struggling off and on to get into better shape decide to think different thoughts.

You can do this by asking yourself some questions. If being in better physical shape is what you want; hold that question in your mind and ask yourself what would it take to achieve that? You will need to be looking for habits that are not working that you need to let go of including your thinking. You may need to just decide to move in the direction of fitness, wellness and simply getting healthy.

What you discover by looking inward you can materialize through your actions each and every day. Through a series of small actions repeated on a regular basis you can materialize and experience big positive changes over a period of time. You cannot light a big fire.

You have the ability to become all you want to be. To become the person you would like to be starting with the moment of right now. When the right now is good and positive you will find things become easier and will start to happen without too much effort. So, if you want to improve how you look and feel forever change your mind and your body will follow as it all starts there.

Healthy Body and Healthy Mind Lead to Good Life

daisies1By Jonathan R -

A healthy life is important to lead a good life. Our health is like a wall pre-requisite to draw a picture. We are the architect of our own health. Either we prevent being unhealthy or cure the damage already done. Physical fitness is very vital. Fitness is a relative term. A sprinter should have a different degree of fitness as compared to a music teacher. There are many more dimensions one can bring to define fitness. Depending upon the required level of fitness, one should take appropriate steps.

More than five billion people live in this world. The body constitution of each one of us is different. The calories needed for every individual is different. There is no one common prescription for everyone in this world. Let us take few examples. The energy level needed for a professional designer is different from a taxi driver. To prescribe a labourer to grab a cereal bar for breakfast is ridiculous. My dad’s friend, a chain smoker died at the age of 83! Believe me, I observed him leading a healthy life. I am not recommending you to smoke to live a healthy life. I try to drive home the point that you should not get carried away by exciting information that is available around you and go overboard to apply in your daily life also. That is dangerous to a healthy life.

While we cannot have five billion suggestions for physical fitness and healthy life, we can identify common needs for all of us. Whether you are an Olympic champion or an office clerk; a celebrity or a hair dresser, only three appropriate steps have to be taken by you. Look at your eating habit, physical fitness exercise and exercise for the mind. You can build further with many bolts-on to achieve laurels in life.

We can use our common sense to lead a healthy life. It does not require great knowledge about science or medicine or physical exercise. Leave that to the specialists. We are all aware that food is very important for sustenance. Our body is a mysterious workshop containing various machines. Food is its input. The machine processes the food and provides energy to the body to do our daily life activities. If the input to the machine is more than its capacity to process, obviously the machine will break down. If the quality of input to the machine is not conducive to the construction of the machine, again the machine will collapse. Apart from the quality and quantity of intake, we should pay attention to timing. There is a saying. I am sure all of us know this. We should eat breakfast like a prince. In the after noon, we should eat lunch like a king. In the night, we should eat meal like a beggar. The digesting power during the night is very poor. Also there is no physical activity involved in the night when we sleep. So allow the stomach t be half filled. Have your dinner couple of hours before going to bed. When we wake up in the morning, if we take a glass of water, it helps for the body to hydrate to prepare for the day’s job. How we cannot start our car with 4th gear, the same way we should consider our body. After 10 hrs of empty stomach when we break the fast, we should start with simple and easily digestible food. Basically we should start with first gear and move on. In my view, to have physical fitness, 3 times of intake – morning, afternoon and night is sufficient. Perhaps refreshment between lunch and dinner can also be incorporated. The key driver is to scrupulously follow the routine timing of intake. This is a good recipe for a healthy life.

Our stomach is the origin for all our ailments. Even the main reason for bad breath originates from the stomach only. If we do not take care of our stomach and brush our teeth with costliest tooth paste and wash our mouth with most expensive liquid mouth wash, the bad breath will not vanish. We should keep our stomach clean by taking appropriate quantity, quality of food in routine timings. It is easier said than done but not impossible. You know who is the culprit? It is our tongue. If we pay heed to the taste, then we would not be able to control the quantum. It does not mean that we should not enjoy the taste. In fact the tongue contributes to a great deal for healthy life. When we enjoy food, we feel good. Feeling good is a sign of healthy life. If someone asks you to take only green vegetables to have physical fitness, there is no difference between us and herbivores. But the trick is not to cross the limit of moderation. That will be counter productive. Give importance to the taste but be careful. We should eat to live and not live to eat.

Many of us believe that being slim leads to a healthy life. One of my friends is slim but has cholesterol. It is a wrong notion. The body structure of each one of us is different. An elephant should not try to become a horse. Nature has created that way. What is important is to prevent becoming over weight or obese or under weight. If the damage is done, consult specialist to get back on track. Do not perform any physical fitness exercise without the proper guidance of a physical education expert. Sometimes you are the expert of knowing your own do-s and don’t-s. The first day when I went to learn Tai Chi, Chinese version of Yoga, the master told me to rotate my neck clockwise and anticlockwise as a warm up exercise. However I was earlier told by my orthopedic surgeon not to rotate my neck to recover from a type of spondylities I had. What was good for others did not suit me. There will be many such situations where we should use our wisdom. Especially we have to be careful on physical fitness exercise.

Life is a series of experiences. If our experiences are good we say the life is good, otherwise we say the life is bad. Mind determines whether an experience is good or bad. Healthy life is achieved by the combination of healthy body and healthy mind. Mind does not exist in our brain. Mind is a subtle matter manifests in our astral body between our soul and physical body. The food we eat is converted into energy by the blood and the finest particles of food reach the subtle mind and then to still subtler intellect. While healthy food definitely supports for a healthy mind, nevertheless exercise to the mind is also very important to have a healthy life. Yoga is considered to be one of the best forms of giving exercise to the body and mind. A branch of Yoga has physical fitness exercise also. Meditation is another form of giving healthy exercise to the mind. These have to be practiced with the help of specialists. This is the body-mind-intellect complex. A simple but effective understanding and application of the above will go a long way to attain a healthy life.

The Psychology of a Healthy Mind and Body

happy2By Lillian Varrassi -

Studies have shown that patients with potentially life threatening diseases such as cancer, who have an optimistic and positive attitude, are much more likely to survive than those who simply give up.

This leads professionals to believe that psychology and perspective are not only intertwined, but can have a major impact on their overall health. People with a positive outlook are generally less likely to contract diseases and more likely to have a healthy recovery if they do become ill.

Stress is another psychological problem that can cause serious health problems. We all deal with stress on a daily basis, but too much stress can lead to health problems such as ulcers, hypertension, and heart attacks. Health care professionals believe that stress is one of the leading causes of many serious diseases.

Too much stress can have a drastic impact on your entire body – from your state of mind to your cardiovascular system. And experts agree, stress is simply a state of mind.

Thus, if the way we think has a direct impact on the way we feel and how healthy we are, how we can we learn to think in a more positive way?

Avoiding stressful situations is one way to reduce negativity, a catalyst that promotes inner angst. When you encounter a stressful situation, take deep breaths, go for a walk, or meditate. Exercise is most beneficial to alleviate stressful conditions and bring about a balance within. Laugh as often as you can. Envision the cup as half full; not half empty.

Many people enjoy yoga, mountain biking, and other stress-reducing activities. A walk in the park, listening to soothing music, reading a good book, or spending some time alone can go a long way in reducing your overall stress levels.

Try to focus on the positive things in your life. If you continuously have thoughts such as “I’m lucky to have such a wonderful family,” instead of “I hate my job,” you’ll benefit from this positive attitude and become a much happier person. A positive state of mind is a proven way to live a healthier and happier life.

Healthy Mind For A Healthy Body

puzzle1By Singh Vineet -

Mind refers to all the aspects of consciousness marked as combinations of memory, desire, imagination and emotion. Mind is not a gross thing that can be noticeable. Its existence is nowhere seen, and its degree cannot be measured in simple measuring scale. In popular practice mind is often considered as the synonym of thinking. Some might state this phrase as a state of private discussion with ourselves that we carry on inside our heads. It is a private area to which no one but the owner has right of entry.

However, body and mind are closely interconnected to each other and emotions play a big part in determining one’s health status. In accordance with Ayurveda and Yoga, both mind and body are made up of five elements, i.e Panchabhutas of earth (prithvi), water (jal), fire (agni or tej), air (vayu) and ether or space (akash). The mind, one of subtlest parts of our being is composed of air and ether, the lightest elements. Stress and its negative effect on the immune system remains the major challenge to good health. Our immune system which is holistic in nature significantly gets affected by close associations with psychology, neurology, endocrinology, nutrition and the environment.

In the past few years, recent studies have shown that 70% of all physician visits are stress related and 40% of employee turnover is due to stress. Several researches had also shown that negative emotions suppress immune function. Constant stress depletes the body’s resources, ability to adapt, coping functions are compromised and finally person gets ill. Once the mind is depressing, poisons are on the loose into the blood, which roots more sadness and lack of enthusiasm.

Studies conducted by the Institute of HeartMath (IHM) has also shown that negative emotions, stress, frustration cause disorder in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and positive emotions of care, thought, and love creates harmony in the ANS, and directly increase the efficiency of the heart and boost the immune system. A comprehensive approach to maintain good health includes increasing self-responsibility for wellness and a positive mental attitude.

A strong and hearty mind is somewhat that we all wish for. Life is intended to be a positive, despite difficulties that come along. It can have recoil, desire and surprise, but our positive attitude and healthy approach towards life can change the way we accept things all around our life. A healthy mind results a healthy body and this makes life worth living. Two things, that simultaneously go together is good health and a sound mind. A healthy mind diminishes the tension hormones, conserve our mental state and put away them from the distressing effect of Alzheimer’s disease. A positive mind anticipates happiness, health and a successful outcome of every situation and action.

Now attitude or thoughts can not be changed overnight, so as to turn the mind with positive thoughts you have to perform some mind exercise, like:

1.    Constantly visualize constructive and beneficial situations. Make use of positive words in your conversation or daily dialogues.
2.    Replace negative feelings with positive thinking. The replacing thought must be positive in every sense. Apart from being inspiring and assuring, it should also be suggestive.
3.    Think positively; anticipate just positive results and situations, and surely conditions will adjust accordingly.
4.    Reinforce good and healthy thoughts with emotions and images. Though this may take longer time in comparison to replacing a single positive thought, but this process is more effective and allows you to divide the desired target into workable units.

No matter what your age, exercising your brain may make the difference the way you actually perceive and learn from your life. Finally you should know that your mental state is what you think and as a result you feel what you want. So make up your mind with healthy thinking. Doing this daily exercise is a primary key to living a blissful and meaningful life.
