Truth About Self Hypnosis

Hypnotherapy is a form of healing and alternative remedy that our society has turned into the art of entertainment instead of using it for its true powers, benefits and abilities. Today, more and more people are beginning to learn that hypnosis is more than a nightly stage show, but something that can quite literally change their lives. Hypnosis can be done alone (self-hypnosis) or you can choose to work with a hypnotist during your first few sessions in order to learn the principles to get started. This is an art that can be used in hundreds of different ways throughout your life and best of all you can use it anytime throughout the day, whenever you need it.

Virtually anyone can learn the straight forward methods of self-hypnosis to bring about certain change in his or her lives. This is in many cases used to reduce someone of harmful behavior like nail biting or smoking. Self-hypnosis can also be used to correct a person’s personality traits that they may find undesirable like lacking confidence or excessive jealousy. It is a powerful tool that any individual can pick up to use.

When getting to know self-hypnosis, most individuals will first learn to simply get themselves to loosen up or relax with their eyes closed and perform a countdown on the exhale from 10 to 1. This certainly will constantly produce in a mild hypnotic status which can be further improved by thinking being in some peaceful place such as a beach, a garden, a forest, and so on. By applying visualization one is able to influence the physiological, mental and emotional states just as effectively as if we were really there. This is because the mind cannot tell the difference between what is original and what is imaginary.

Self-hypnosis is a learned technique which can certainly be improved over a period of time. Often, individuals who practice self-hypnosis realizes that they can end up relaxed enough to enter into a trance, but then they are stuck on what to do next. When going through hypnosis by a professional, you will have a therapist there to guide you through the process. That does not exist in self-hypnosis. In reality, the next steps right after getting yourself into a trance is truly self-therapy. It is very vital to have your goal and purpose in mind. Prior to starting your self-hypnosis session you has got to have a clear understanding of the thing you long and how you are going to accomplish it, and write a script. While in the session when you are inside a hypnotic form, you should probably repeat your script over and over again in your mind.

The majority of people never notice that they can access the hypnotic state more than a few times each day. This can simply be while they are reading a good book, watching a movie or television show, playing a musical instrument; or even being occupied with work will tend to result in you being able to reduce one’s main focus of your attention and mental absorption. The aim with self-hypnosis is to give yourself access to that piece of your mind in order to manage your own habits and make the changes in yourself in order to turn away from old behavior.

C’ing Is Believing – A Review

C’ing is believing is a brilliant book about a very important topic – how you can change your beliefs. Dr. Andy Yates is a holistic healing facilitator and uses that wonderful modality called hypnosis/hypnotherapy as one of his key tools to help you identify those subconscious beliefs that run your life even though you are not aware of them. The C’s stand for Capture, Consider, Construct and Change in relation to your beliefs.

He gives the clearest description of how the mind works and what hypnosis is that I have read anywhere and I encourage everyone who wants to understand why they do things the way they do to read it. “Why do I do those things I don’t want to do and why don’t I do things that I DO want to do?” is an often posed question and C’ing is Believing will help you find the answer.

A wealth of information for therapists, it is also highly informative and functional for anyone who wants to understand their own mind better and for anyone who wants to do self hypnosis. (I agree with Yates who says that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis but sometimes it helps to have a facilitator).

He discusses beliefs, contra-beliefs and beliefs that are on the “edge and he looks at them from three points of view: 1) a logical, analytical perspective; 2) an open minded point of view; and 3) a spiritual perspective. He also suggests how you can frame suggestions for each of the above points of view to bring about a positive result.

As a hypnotherapist for quite a number of years, I can honestly say that this is the best book I have read on the subject of the mind and how to work with the subconscious mind in a helpful way. I think every hypnotherapist could benefit from reading this book as well as anyone who wants to learn to do positive work with their own subconscious mind.

If follows, that because ‘all hypnosis is self-hypnosis,’ then using self-hypnosis is equally capable of producing therapeutic results as is using the assistance of a clinical hypnotherapist.

Hypnosis: What Is It?

Do you know the story of the fish that managed to escape his watery confines and took a trip over the beach and into a small town? OK, so he spent some time looking around at buildings and people and had no idea what they were. The mind of that little fish was whirring as he flipped and flopped back to the sea. He was so excited about seeing his friends and could not wait to tell them about the world beyond the ocean.

The word soon spread that the missing fish had returned and a great crowd gathered on the seabed. Our fish started to explain about the funny looking fish that walk upright, have one gill in the middle of their face and don’t need to live in water – the spellbound audience gapped open mouthed, then one small fish gurgled ‘what is water?’

Hypnosis is an essential part of our human existence

The ocean was such an integral part of the fish that they could not distinguish themselves from the water. Just like that water, the hypnotic state is a natural part of being a human being. It is everywhere in our experience – we just don’t realize it.

The hypnotic state has several essential functions but lets start building your knowledge by bringing three essential elements of hypnosis to your attention.

1. The Unconscious Mind

To keep explanations simple at this stage lets just say that the unconscious mind is everything that you are not aware of right now. You don’t consciously recall everything you have ever learnt all the time. This information is stored as patterns and associations in your unconscious mind. And your past experiences are filed as multi sensory imprints that can be accessed consciously or unconsciously. The unconscious mind becomes like one huge storage depot. If you had to be conscious of everything from how to digest food and grow your hair to thinking about what you have to do to engage in conversation – your brain would become totally overwhelmed. What we learn and experience simply gets filed away and becomes instinctive behavior stored in our unconscious mind.

2. Focus of attention

When people talk about hypnosis being like a daydream they talk about how we often forget driving part of familiar route. Or read a newspaper and have no idea of what we have just read. And how many of us have lost a few minutes when dreaming of what we would do when we win the lottery? When you focus time can slip by and it can feel as if you have been in a dream. Getting lost in a good book, surfing the internet or playing a favourite sport can induce this narrowing of attention. Hours can slip by as you concentrate on the task in hand and loose awareness of what is going on around you. Now the relevance to the hypnotic state is as you focus you activate rapid eye movement, which is commonly known as the dreaming part of sleep. So lets look at what REM is and how it contributes to your understanding of hypnosis.

3. The Rapid Eye Movement state (REM)

When you are in REM your eyes can be seen to dart around under your eyelids. That’s why it’s been called the rapid eye movement state. The REM state is more often associated with dreaming but is present twenty four seven. REM does occur when we dream but also when you are awake such as when you focus your attention. Whilst dreaming our imagination and our unconscious mind become engaged and we can really believe what is happening. Have you ever woken up frightened from a dream or really feeling good because something good happened in your dream? I remember looking under my bed once for a pair of lovely boots that I was convinced that I had bought. So your dreaming brain works within your unconscious mind and can be seen as a reality simulator as in that moment you don’t really know what is real and what isn’t.

Hypnosis is the REM state

When a hypnotherapist helps a client go into hypnosis they will often observe flickering eyelids and other physical changes characteristic of the REM state. So what is the hypnotherapist doing to help their client access their hypnotic state?

The hypnotherapist will talk and guide their client’s attention. By helping a client to focus, all external stimulus drops away and they start to slip into REM. Whist in the REM state the hypnotherapist can help the person work with their dreaming brain to make the changes needed to that persons unwanted instinctive behaviours and thoughts.

So now you know that when we focus our attention it can activate the REM state and this gives us access to the unconscious mind where all of the things that we don’t have conscious control of are stored. And hypnosis doesn’t just happen when you sit in front a hypnotherapist, it is there when we dream, and focus on a task or thought. We can experience the REM state for a few seconds or for many minutes.

Try Self Hypnosis For Self Improvement

Among the best techniques to connect with your inner being, to get a sense of your real power and promise, and to enrich yourself is to participate in self hypnosis. It doesn’t cost you anything to try self hypnosis, it can be done in the convenience of your own house and anybody can do it if they become familiar with the proper procedures.

If you don’t have any idea how to learn self hypnosis, don’t worry. We live in the era of information. There are a lot of methods to be found online, many of which you can easily teach yourself. It’s not complicated to do in any way. As a matter of fact, people participate in this practice in a number of ways without even being aware of it, so there’s truly no absolutely correct way to go about it.

The very first stage is choosing a calm location to start. You have to get as comfy as you can. Some people prefer to lie under their blankets, undressed or wearing loose clothing, with their head on a pillow. Some prefer a favorite chair to recline in, others select the couch and yet others like to be seated with legs crossed on the floor. It’s neither here nor there what position you adopt, just get as comfortable as possible. The intent is to find a place and a pose where you are able to stay utterly still for up to 20 minutes or more without experiencing discomfort or muscle pain.

Just as each individual has a preferred way of becoming restful, they also have their favorite techniques for placing themselves in a calm state. The most typical way is to breathe deeply while not thinking about anything at all. That’s why you will need to have absolute silence. You don’t need to listen to traffic noise outside, your kids’ screams or even a barking dog that will bring you out of your calm state of being. Many people listen to soothing music, some prefer to hear wind chimes and some wear headsets that suppress all sound. No matter what it takes, you need to become utterly tranquil and bring yourself ever more deeply into a subconscious state.

Once you’re in a hypnotic trance, you will need to focus on the stuff you’re trying to improve. See yourself achieving whatever your aspirations and goals are, or visualize yourself becoming the person you have always wanted to be. Again, there’s no improper way to go about it. Your inner being understands what needs to be improved, your system is aware of how to repair itself and your psyche, your subconscious mind, is aware of what it takes to be victorious. As long as you’re peaceful, and free of all conscious thought, you’ve succeeded. Do it regularly enough and you’ll quickly see yourself developing into a better person and more in sync with who you really are and who you want to be.

Boost Self-Confidence – Seek Approval Within

Do you sense that you are seeking someone’s approval when you make a decision or embark on a project? Have you heard your self-talk that sounds something like this? “I’ll show her/him.” “He/she will be surprised when I ____.” “You wait and see.” “If only I could prove to him/her___.” “I’ll prove it.”

You might use these thoughts because your accomplishments are seldom acknowledged by those whom you wish to impress. The acknowledgment you receive from others is merely frosting on the cake. The acknowledgment you give to yourself is the cake. Furthermore, your acknowledgment of yourself will boost your self-confidence.

You can start by examining the areas of your life when you have attained your goal with ease and on time. Make a list of the incremental steps and how you succeeded. Make note of how your ideas came into being and reached fruition. Completing this analysis will reinforce and strengthen your capabilities immeasurably. No one can give you the incremental acknowledgment of a job well done more than you.

When you have more confidence in your capabilities it will soften your reaction to other’s lack of acknowledgment. Being aware of all your incremental accomplishments will help you recognize that the approval of others is seldom necessary to feel worthy and fulfilled.

When you step back and examine your successes, you gain self-assurance and lessen the need to prove yourself to others. You might have a tendency to work more rigorously when you seek approval from people you admire or are an authority figure. This often times leads to frustration and a sense that in order to get the recognition you deserve you need to jump higher and through more hoops.

When you trust and acknowledge yourself, you will notice that your work is valued based on its merits and that words do not define who you are. It only defines what you have accomplished. Others will respect you for what you do more than when you push hard to gain their admiration. As you acknowledge your incremental accomplishments you will find that seeking approval from others loses its significance.

Holistic Health Care – What and Whom

The Baby boomers-those born 1946 through 1964-are the largest population to require health care than ever before. Medical practitioners and pharmaceutical companies are focusing on what pills, potions or surgeries the baby boomers-turned seniors will be likely to use in the next 30 – 40 years. Ironically, the majority of people tend to be concerned about their health after something major has occurred. The truth is if we consistently take good care of our health the aging process has little impact.

Baby boomers are voicing their concerns about better health, more than prior generations. However, many do not know where to find information and options, other than Traditional Western Medicine (TWM).

Few people research the plethora of side effects for prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) drugs-not to mention that prescription and OTC drugs are formulated to take over and hijack your body’s biochemistry. Prescription and OTC drugs force blood pressure to be lower/higher or force the liver to stop manufacturing healthy cholesterol. In fact, prescription or OTC drugs interfere with normal human metabolism, and that is one reason why prescription drugs are killing people. Yet, conventional medical doctors rely on propaganda about the unknown side effects of holistic health care to convince people that only prescription or OTC drugs are safe. It is NOT that they are terrified about the side effects of holistic health care-they are terrified of people being well and they won’t have their business of prescribing life-long pills and potions. Western Medicine is profit driven.

If everyone knew they could prevent any disease with plant extracts, medicinal herbs, natural vitamins, minerals, and supplements, as well as having peace of mind-the pharmaceutical and medical industry would collapse overnight.

o The World Health Organization, estimates that between 65 to 80 percent of the world’s population (about 3 billion people) rely on naturopathic or homeopathic medicine as their primary form of health care.

o Worldwide, only 10 to 30 percent of people use traditional medicine, 70 to 90 percent use naturopathic and homeopathic health care.

o 74 percent of the American population desires a natural approach to health care.

o Of the one out of three Americans who say they have used natural techniques, 84 percent said they would use it again.

o Traditional Chinese Medicine has been chosen by the World Health Organization for worldwide propagation to meet the health care needs of the twenty-first century.

Last, but not least do not allow traditional medical doctors, pharmacists or your family and best friends to intimidate you into believing your life is in jeopardy if you use holistic health care remedies or practitioners.

The Journal of the American Medical Association Vol. 284 July 26, 2000, published an article documenting the tragedy of Traditional Western Medicine (TWM) paradigm. The author, Dr. Barbara Starfield of Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health describes how the U.S. health care system may contribute to poor health. Doctors, she stated, are the third leading cause of death in the U.S., causing 250,000 deaths every year.

This information is a follow-up to the Institute of Medicine report December, 1999, but the data was hard to reference as it was not in peer-reviewed journal. Now it is published in JAMA which is the most widely circulated medical periodical in the world.

DEATHS PER YEAR:

1. 12,000 —–unnecessary surgery

2. 7,000 —–medication errors in hospitals

3. 20,000 —-other errors in hospitals

4. 80,000 —-infections in hospitals

5. 106,000 —non-error, negative effects of drugs

250,000 deaths per year from iatrogenic–death induced in a patient by a physician’s activity, manner, or therapy, especially of a complication of treatment causes–is outrageous!! Yet, the majority of people continue to trust the medical profession to ‘cure’ them, in spite of all the evidence to the contrary.

Of 13 countries in a recent comparison, the United States ranks an average of 12th (second from the bottom) for 16 available health indicators. The ranking of the U.S. on several indicators was:

o 13th (last) for low-birth-weight percentages

o 13th for neonatal mortality and infant mortality overall 14

o 11th for post neonatal mortality

o 13th for years of potential life lost (excluding external causes)

o 11th for life expectancy at 1 year for females, 12th for males

o 10th for life expectancy at 15 years for females, 12th for males

o 10th for life expectancy at 40 years for females, 9th for males

o 7th for life expectancy at 65 years for females, 7th for males

o 3rd for life expectancy at 80 years for females, 3rd for males

o 10th for age-adjusted mortality

The poor performance of the U.S. medical profession was recently confirmed by a World Health Organization study, which used different data and ranked the United States as 15th among 25 industrialized countries.

Forgiveness – A Gift to Yourself

Most people believe that when one forgives another; one is letting that person off the hook for the injustice or hurt they caused. Although, someone caused hurt and an injustice, however, the offender has moved on unaware of your angst, while you are still holding the hurt and resentment. By holding the hurt and resentment, you are metaphorically taking poison and waiting for the offender to die. Where is the justice in that? There is none.

To feel better, to lighten your load, to feel more alive you need to ‘let go’ of hurts, resentment and righteous indignation. Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself. It is a gift no one can give you. Wow! Think about how powerful that is. No one can stop you from letting go of hurt, resentment and righteous indignation. Pause now. Ask your inner ‘Knower,’ “Who and what would you have me forgive today?”

Forgiveness starts with a willingness to take care of yourself, to give yourself peace of mind. You are holding the pain, no one is forcing you to do that. The offender is going on with their life probably not remembering or even knowing of the hurt and resentment you are holding. Whoever it is and whatever the situation, ask your infinitely wise self to bring forth forgiveness.

Forgiveness like anything is a decision – nothing more nothing less. You can decide, this is the moment that I ‘let go’ of all the hurt, resentment and righteous indignation regarding ______. If you are unable to make the decision to ‘let go’ and move on, consider seeking professional assistance. A Hypnosis practitioner, who is trained to access the emotional energy at the cell level by using the subconscious mind, is the most effective and efficient approach. You will be assisted to examine your habits and patterns to decide what needs to be healed, in order for you to ‘let go.’ You will also be assisted to create an action plan to create peace of mind and a happier future. Go From Self Sabotage To Self Respect

Do you know that low self esteem and self sabotage are two sides of the same coin? Do you know that both are rooted in subconsciously stored beliefs generated by negative memories of your past that undermine your self worth, and make you feel like an undeserving individual who needs to suffer in this life in order to assuage the wrongs you may have perpetrated on others when you were too young to understand what was taking place? Do you know it is possible to completely erase these negative memories, release all self sabotaging behaviours and steer your self back to a state of divine self respect?

Low self esteem is not something you have it is something you “do” to yourself. In other words each time you find yourself undermining your own best interests, through some self sabotaging act, you are under the spell of low self esteem. The only way that anyone can perpetrate negativity upon themselves is if they believe themselves to be inadequate, unworthy, bad, defective, deficient, less than others, like a failure or loser and so on.

Does it surprise you when I say that individuals are not any of those things but instead have been subconsciously programmed to “believe” they are? In other words if you harbour one or more of those beliefs you are essentially in a hypnotic trance that blocks you from knowing and experiencing your true divine self. It’s much like an actor who comes off stage after the performance is over yet forgets to shed their role and goes right on playing it because they believe it is who they are.

That programming is rooted in and supported by subconsciously stored negative memories from your early life. In order to break free and become one’s true authentic self respecting self it becomes necessary to awaken from that trance and shed the programming for good.

The only way to do that is to erase the underlying negative memories that support and sustain it. A new coaching process developed over 10 years ago has the ability to do just that. Choose Superior Thoughts – Consciously

Every thought habit that you use in life has been conditioned and indoctrinated, giving them strong power. You can crowd out inferior thoughts with superior thoughts.

Superior/positive thinking has a higher frequency in them. You can feel it in your body. You will feel more expansive. When you are having a positive/superior thought, you will feel your shoulders relax. You will feel your forehead relax. You will feel your muscles relax as you lean into and open up to your connection with your Truth.

Words connoting lack or scarcity or criticism and condemnation can be crowded out by focusing on superior positive words. As you train yourself to mentally look for the superior/positive, and appreciate it, you will see and experience more of it in your life.

The power to choose your thoughts is up to you. You are in charge of the words that come into your mind. If your mind is on auto-pilot, you need to tune in to your thoughts to know what words are inferior/negative or superior/positive.

The following steps will help you change inferior/negative thoughts.

• Decide what thought you want to change. For one week listen to your thoughts and chart how often and when you use the thought.

• Decide what thought you want to use instead. For one week listen to your thoughts – each time you hear yourself use the ‘inferior/negative’ thought, change it in mid-thought or mid-sentence with the positive/superior thought.

• It takes 30 – 45 days to move the old thought out and anchor the new thought as a habit.
