For example accountants need calculators and computers, beauticians need scissors and blow-dryers, carpenters need hammers, painters need buckets of paint and paint brushes and actors need scripts and props. Meditation - It is in meditation that you can do the most self discovery and get direction from you own inner self or soul. It is the primary self improvement tool. Many people think they can’t meditate because their mind never stops. This is normal for every learner. Just start. You don’t have to spend hours and hours daily to reap the benefits. journalJournaling – Writing down your thoughts, feelings, goals, aspirations on a daily basis is a dynamic tool for self improvement. Journaling helps bring awareness, clarity and discovery to you life and keeps a record of your progress. All you need to get started are pen and paper or a computer with some type of word processing. You need an open mind, an open heart and a willingness to be honest with yourself (sometimes not as easy as it sounds) There are a number of books and websites that can help you do this or you can take a class in journaling at your local community college or from a person who frelances teaching journaling classes. You don’t have to get fancy here. You don’t need to worry about spelling, grammar or punctuation – you just need to write about what you think, feel, want, etc.

Progress in self improvement is  generally not an instant achievement.  Real growth takes time. We are an “instant” everything society and some of you, I know, would like to take a pill or do an exercise a few times and have instant self esteem, or instant self confidence or perhaps a thin body that allows your self image to soar. It just isn’t going to happen.

By the time I filed for a divorce to end a 25 year marriage I was pretty much at rock bottom. I had lost my identity because for most of  those years I was known as John’s wife and Chris and Kevin’s mom. Some people didn’t even know my first name. My husband was well known and my children were quite popular – all their friends called me mom  and most adults, other than close friends, called me Mrs. Conlan. So, in essence,  I didn’t even have a name of my own. When I had said “I do” I believed I could  do anything, be anything achieve anything. And I did. But after 25 years of being put down, ignored and verbally and emotionally abused my self esteem was at the lowest it could go.  25 years of continuous little verbal jabs will do that and the jabber is rarely aware of it. The “jabee” usually puts up with it until they reach a final breaking point. When that happened, I made the decision to leave.

Leaving generally implies another “starting”  – beginning again.  How do you start when you no longer believe you have anything to offer?  You start by getting up, dressing up and showing up  and doing whatever work you do the best you can that day. You do it one day at a time. You wipe your tears, grit you teeth and do what you have to do.

Now, 16 years later I am back! In fact I am not only back but better. It was a tortuous path but I made it and am still traveling on it.  I learned a lot along the way and those things I’ll share with you. Following are some of the tools I found helpful along the way.

  • Find someone to help you. For me it was a professional counselor. I went to two: one when I was trying to make the decision to file for divorce and one when I was trying to figure out just who I was after these twenty five years. Both were of tremendous help. This was before the days of Positive Psychology. Now I would look for a Positive Psychology coach or a counselor who was trained in Positive Psychology. This person can also be a best friend or someone else you can trust.
  • Meditation. This was probably the single most powerful change agent in my new life. I found some groups to join, studied meditation, bought meditation tapes (remember those) and CDs and taught meditation for a while. It created a “safe place” within me and opened my mind and heart to the growth and change I needed to experience. It also got me grounded, centered and calmed down.
  • Hypnotherapy and Self Hypnosis.  During the time preceding the divorce I developed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and gained a great deal of weight. I tried several diets unsuccessfully – the only thing I hadn’t tried was hypnosis. I did lose some weight using hypnosis (40 pounds) but the great outcome was an understanding of and love for hypnosis and hypnotherapy. When I was able, I studied hypnotherapy and started working in a hypnotherapy clinic. I consider it to be, next to meditation, the  most important self improvement tool available. Because it works with the subconscious mind which controls habits and emotions it is powerfully effective. Because the subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between what’s real and imagined, you can literally imagine yourself back to wholeness. (There are many good self hypnosis CDs and MP3 downloads available. The best I have found are by Hypnosis Network – see the ad in the right column).
  • Affirmations. Because the subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference in what’s real and imagined you can affirm that you are what you want to be. It can’t just be repeated over and over to be effective – it needs to be said or thought with meaning, feeling, perhaps passion, to work for you. Even if you weight 300 pounds you can affirm, “I am slender and healthy.”  Do not discount the power of your own mind to help you turn things around.
  • Self Help/Self Improvement literature. Don’t be afraid to read, to learn new things, to expand your thinking.  This includes some of the really terrific videos on YouTube. There is a vast selection available now. For some of my personal  favorites click the Bookstore tab at the top.
  • Humor. Laugh every chance you get. Watch the comedy channels, read the comics, send and receive cartoons by email if you can. Laugh, laugh, laugh – as much as you can.
  • If you’re alone, and it’s at all possible,  get a pet. They are wonderful healers. It has been said that the most powerful healing comes from a cat’s purr and a dog’s wagging tail. They love you no matter what and when you self esteem is at zero, you need that.
  • Help someone else. Get involved in volunteering for a cause you believe in. Helping other people will always help you simultaneously. Just do it.
  • Study what your beliefs are. What do ou believe that you weren’t told you HAD to believe. What have you come to believe deeply on your own. This will build you a foundation upon which self esteem will grow.
  • Open up to love. Know that you are, even if you don’t feel like it loving, lovable and loved.

Those are the major tools I came to  use.  Begin somewhere in the list and gradually add  the others. It takes them all so don’t just pick one and think it’s the magic tool.  Give yourself  time to grow. Your self esteem/self worth is like a beautiful flower. Plant the seed of what you want and water and nourish it using the tools above. One day, almost without noticing the changes that have take place, you will realize that you are in full bloom and very, very beautiful.

Hypnosis relaxation techniques for good health can be a real adjunct to cultivating long-lasting and noticeable benefits in a person’s mental and physical makeup. And actual hypnosis is no mysterious or arcane practice in which people can be made to cackle like chickens or leap around like frogs. For one thing, someone who’s under hypnosis won’t usually do something he or she wouldn’t do while in a fully aware or fully conscious mental state.

Rather, what hypnosis normally is made of are mental states or sets of attitudes which are normally brought about by actual hypnotic induction. They’re a result of a physical mechanism that’s taking place between the hypnotist and the person being placed under hypnosis. A person has got to want to be hypnotized, first of all, and he or she has got to want to be made to do something generally beneficial.

This is where hypnosis aimed at helping a person relax can be primarily useful. In it, the hypnotist can guide a person from a fully conscious state into one in which he or she is open to positive and productive suggestions. In relaxation, that may mean the hypnotized person will receive suggestions that lead to him or her stopping every once-in-a-while to “smell the roses,” so to speak. Or to engage in slow and rhythmic deep breathing exercises whenever they consciously begin to feel stress building up.

Hypnotic states are easy to recognize in many people, after they’ve worked with their hypnotherapist to “go under.” Very slightly fluttering eyes and maybe some slackness in the facial muscles are the two biggest indicators. A hypnotist will use various means to get a person to this state and then will work with them to build up positive desires aimed at relaxing in their awake states. That’s about all there is to it.

Using hypnosis to create a desire to relax, and to relax in general, can be a productive means to gaining a healthier mind and body. It’s not very hard to do, if one only has the courage, the time and the inclination to engage in it in an effective manner.

Why Self Hypnosis Audio Trumps Other Methods of Self Improvement

When it comes to finding ways to improve the quality of my life, I will pretty much try anything. I’m a total self-help addict! I am constantly on the lookout for new books, tv shows, and audiobooks– anything that will help me learn to gain insight into my life, solve a problem, or approach a situation from a new perspective.

One method of self-improvement that I particularly love, for a variety of reasons, is listening to self hypnosis audio. I have consistently gained positive results from all the different recordings I have listened to.

For instance, falling asleep quickly and easily has always been difficult for me. I will lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling, and toss and turn for hours. On a whim, I decided to download a self hypnosis audio recording designed to help insomniacs fall asleep. I put my headphones on, closed my eyes, and let myself give in to the soothing ambient sounds.

The gentle hypnotic voice told me how to relax the various muscles in my body, and how to let go of the stress I carried with me from the day. Eventually, the voice guided me into a deep sleep…

This is just one example. I have also used self hypnosis audio to get over my shyness, gain confidence, and learn how to lucid dream, among other things.

The reason why self hypnosis audio works so well is because when you are in a hypnotic state, your mind is much more open to suggestion than it would be otherwise. You become open and willing to accept what the voice in the recording tells you. Hypnotism works at a deeper subconscious level.

No matter how many books you read on gaining self-confidence, you will never actually gain confidence until you put the concepts you’ve read into action (or thought). This can be easier said than done! However, with self hypnosis, you soak up the concepts on the subconscious level like a sponge. You are automatically more likely to succeed, because the steps needed to achieve success are already imbedded deep into your mind.

You don’t need audio to hypnotize yourself, but it makes it much easier! With self-hypnosis audio, all you have to do is find a comfortable spot, relax, and listen to the recording.
