Self-esteem And How It Affects Virtually Every Aspect Of Our Life

By Nathaniel Branden -

No one who is familiar with my writings will be surprised to learn that one of my favorite subjects is self-esteem and how it affects virtually every aspect of our life. Even if I seem to be writing about something else, sooner or later self-esteem has a way of being invited to the party.

Self-esteem is the experience of being competent to cope with the fundamental challenges of life and as being worthy of happiness. (For more details, read The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem). Why the definition of self-esteem can be as important as it is controversial is an issue I will address in a future post.

In recent years, I have been increasingly interested in business and career problems as they relate to self-esteem. Here is a simple example:

The head of a medium-sized company consulted me because, he said, although he had made a great success of his business, he was depressed and unhappy and could not understand why. We discovered that what he had always wanted to be was a research scientist but that he had abandoned that desire in deference to a father who pushed him toward a career in business. Not only was he unable to feel more than the most superficial kind of pride in his accomplishments, but he was wounded in his self-esteem—because in one of the most important issues of his life, he had surrendered his mind to another human being. This is always dangerous, no matter how brilliant the person to whom one surrenders.

It was not difficult to discover that his depression reflected a lifetime of performing admirably while ignoring his deepest needs. While he operated within that framework, pride and satisfaction were beyond his reach, except to a very limited extent. Until he was willing to challenge that framework, and to face the fear of doing so, no solution was possible.

At this point, someone may want to jump in and say, “Wait a minute, Branden. This is not a story uniquely applicable to business. It’s applicable to every aspect of human relationships.”

“You are quite right.” Probably most of us have heard someone say, “I have accomplished so much. Why don’t I feel more proud of myself?” And these people may not be thinking about business. They might be thinking about their marriage, their beautiful children, or their beautiful home. They may believe that these “successes” are guaranteed paths to self-esteem. They ask, not in so many words, “Haven’t my parents or friends promised me?” (See my treatment of autonomy in my “Taking Responsibility?

Although there are several reasons why someone may not enjoy his or her attainments, it can be useful to ask, “Who chose your goals? You — or the voice of some ‘significant other’ inside you?” Neither pride nor self-esteem can be supported by the pursuit of second-hand values that do not reflect who we really are.

Tying our self-esteem to the approval of “significant others,” and betraying our own judgment in the process, is only one of the tragic mistakes by which we can betray our selves. But it is a common one.

Dr. Branden has a Ph.D. in psychology and a background in philosophy.  He has written 20 books with more than 4 million copies in print in 18 languages, including the classic The Psychology of Self-Esteem, originally published in 1969.  In it, he explains the need for self-esteem, and how self-esteem—or lack of it—affects our values, responses, and goals.

His many books include “Honoring the Self,” “The Six Pillars of Self-esteem,” The Art of Living Consciously,” and “My Years with Ayn Rand.”  His most recent book—“Self-esteem at Work”–deals with the application of his work to the challenges of business in an information age economy.

Low Self Esteem – Understanding The Problem

By Ann Mir -

In some point in our lives we will suffer from low self esteem, but that does not mean we try to strive for high self esteem. It is a moderate balance. High self esteem is all about how much we value others people’s opinions and how much we love ourselves. Low self esteem comes from a poor self image. Low self esteem thrives on negative thoughts which makes you believe the criticism made by others. This can cause you to lose faith in yourself maybe harm yourself.

Before fighting against the problem of low self esteem one should know about the factors behind low self esteem.

There are two factors which mainly affect our self esteem- how others see and treat us, how we see ourselves.

Let’s discuss the first factor how others see and treat us. There are many people who play an important role in our life like parents, teachers, friends wives and husbands. Criticism by these people can damage your self esteem. For example if parents spend more time criticizing their children, then it can be harder for children to develop a good self esteem. So we can confirm that how high or low a self esteem is all stems from our upbringing.

Apart from how our upbringing affects our self esteem there is a critic inside us as well to find fault in everything we do. Listening to the negative inner voice can harm a person’s self esteem in the same way other can do. The inner critic is our biggest enemy we may have had a good self esteem as a child but then something happens in our lives which changes our self esteem like a partner criticism, where self esteem is affected..

Our Self Esteem can be affected by our own expectations. People have their lives planned out and what they want to be. And when these plans do not materialise self esteem is affected.

We all experience problems with self esteem at certain times in our lives. But the good news is that, low self esteem is not permanent there are many ways we can improve or raise our self esteem. You can improve your self esteem if you put the effort in and have the self confidence to build self esteem and believe in yourself.

Let’s Focus on Self Esteem – Part III Courage

firefighterBy Irene Conlan -

Two friends were walking along the road together and suddenly came upon a group of children who were about to be attacked by a vicious dog. One grabbed a large stick by the side of the road to defend the children and scare off the dog while the other one stood and watched. It isn’t hard to determine which one had courage. We admire people who are brave and who defend us and others who cannot defend themselves – the military, firemen, policemen, paramedics, etc. We cheer in movies when the brave “good guy” wins.

Today we will focus on the strength group representing Courage. In the courage group are

  • Valor and bravery
  • Perseverance/Industry/Diligence
  • Integrity/Genuineness/Honesty

Valor and Bravery – we all have our own idea of bravery and generally we think of our men and women in the military defending us on foreign fields. Most of them are truly brave and we should be grateful for them always. They, and others, put themselves in harm’s way in our behalf on a regular basis. They are in true physical danger and face it regularly.

Those who stand up for what they believe even if it isn’t popular are also brave – they are morally brave. Martin Luther certainly fit this category as well as our founding fathers who stood against the king of England. Martyrs who died for their faith and those who didn’t flinch when their beliefs were threatened are examples of this kind of bravery. It takes great courage to stand alone against a crowd.

There are also those who are psychologically brave. I work with a group that helps those who are grieving the loss of a wheelchairloved one. There are those who want to throw in the towel right away – they want to die rather than pick up the pieces and they expect everyone to help them.  On the other hand, there are those who have suffered multiple losses and serious setbacks, who get up and go on, active in their own healing. These are the brave ones.  When serious illness strikes there are those who crumble and those who stand and fight it and at the same time reach out to help others.  I knew a woman named Joni Erickson Tada who, a quadriplegic since a diving accident as a young woman, faced life again and learned to paint brilliantly with a brush between her teeth and became an inspiration to millions. This is courage.

We do not all have the strength of bravery but we so admire those who do. Where do you fit?

Integrity/Genuineness/Honesty

I can’t say this better than Selegman who, in Authentic Happiness says:

You are an honest person, not only by speaking the truth but by living your life in a genuine and authentic way. You are down to earth and without pretense; you are a  “real” person. By integrity and genuineness I mean more than just telling the truth to others. I mean representing yourself – your intentions and commitments – to others and to yourself in sincere fashion, whether by word or deed. “To Thine own self, bge true, and thou canst not then be false to any man.” (Authentic Happiness, p. 147)

There was once someone in my life who had a habit of lying – even when it didn’t serve any purpose for him. I would hear  him telling a lie even when the truth would have been better in the situation. I asked him once why he did that and he couldn’t answer me. It was a long standing habit and he wasn’t interested in changing it. I came to distrust everything he said and soon was not able to stay in that friendship. He as dishonest in other things as well and hurt many others because of his lack of integrity – mainly he hurt himself. He made big claims about himself but didn’t walk his talk.

Sometimes it takes great courage to stand for what you believe to be the truth and it takes real bravery to be true to yourself when everyone around you urges you to be “someone else.”

There are courageous people all around us. Are you one of them?

Is courage one of your strengths?

How to Deal With Jealousy and Insecurity

fear1By Andrew Kristen -

Is your jealousy and insecurity causing you a lot of problems in your relationship? I have seen people having issues dealing with jealousy and insecurity in a relationship, they normally have very bad experience from the past relationships or life examples around them. How are you able to deal with jealousy and insecurity?

- Understand your jealousy
One way to deal with jealousy and insecurity is to find out the root cause of these feelings. There are many reasons that can account for the feelings that you have now. It may be the problem that you do not like your partner to talk to the opposite sex, spend too much on work, etc. Your partner may be unaware of how you are feeling now, talk to him or her about your problems in overcoming the strong jealousy and insecurity.

- Build your confidence
People who are insecure tend to have low self esteem. It may be the problem of physical appearance that is bothering your thought, education, job, finance, etc. Work on improving it if that particular reason is bothering you and it can make you feel better about yourself as a person. Always believe that you are different and unique from other people. Stop finding faults with yourself by comparing with other people. So, learn to appreciate the qualities that you have and get support from friends or family.

- Trust your partner and judgment
A bad experience from a previous relationship will not mean that your current partner is the same. Thinking in this manner is very unfair to your partner. Never pre-judge or assume in the most negative way. For example, do not assume that your partner is up to something if he or she hasn’t returned your phone call or text message. Have faith in your partner. You should not judge your partner as the same “bad apple” based on previous relationships.

- Focus more about yourself
Pay more focus to yourself rather than your partner. Usually, whatever things that come across in your life, you will put your partner as priority. Instead of doing that, it is time to let go a little bit and do something that you can obtain for yourself. For example, you want to lose weight, buy a car, etc.

6 Ways to Break Out of Prison

jailBy Ayo Olaniy -

Did I get your attention?

I hope I did. I chose to leave out the word Low Self Esteem. It should actually read; 6 Ways to break out of The Low Self Esteem Prison.

Why use the word prison? A Prison is a place of physical confinement, isolation and restriction to various levels of personal freedom.

The post in context:
I feel the word prison captures the effects of experiencing low self esteem which are isolation, little or no self worth, frustration, depression………

Low Self Esteem refers to the perception of an individual, viewing himself as inadequate, unworthy, unlovable, and/or incompetent. Once this is established in your thoughts/mind, the negative view of self would revolve around every sphere of your life, producing faulty assumptions and an ongoing self-defeating behavior.

Low self esteem affects the quality of your life. You become IMPRISONED with the feelings of insecurity, take fewer risks, communicate less and this restricts various opportunities available for your personal growth or development.

There was an article on the BBC website dated the 9th of July 2009 Self Help Makes You Feel Worse. While my opinion differs from that statement in the context of positive and progressive personal development, I tend to agree with the concept of the article and support the statement by Simon Gelsthorpe, a psychologist with Bradford District Care Trust.

I felt a need to blog on this, attempting to highlight low self esteem symptoms, suggest ways in which we can handle it, in order to promote our personal development. It’s not about relying heavily on positive affirmations, statements, mantras etc alone, but working out an approach to building self confidence over a certain period.

Low Self Esteem symptoms are as follows:
1.    Feeling that you’re not good enough – even if you are.
2.    A decreased level of self confidence associated with putting yourself down all the time.
3.    The feeling of being overwhelmed by the purpose of life.
4.    The doubts of making any personal achievement and being too scared to try out new things to enhance your personal development.
5.    Feeling uncomfortable with your looks – too fat, too slim, too short or tall.
6.    Always worrying about getting even with people.
7.    Always being the victim, blaming others for your problems.
8.    Social withdrawal.
9.    Being unnecessarily fearful and concerned over what people think or imagine about you.
10.    The feeling of Self neglect.

The following tips can help you break out from ‘The Low Self Esteem Prison:

  • Engage in activities you like.Engage in activities that you like, knowing you can excel. This boosts your level of confidence.
  • Know what aspects of your life need development. It improves your personal/professional growth, promotes your strengths and fosters positive relationships or work ethics e.tc
  • Your talents, abilities should be maximized to their optimal level in order to achieve purpose and direction for your life.

When you identify and engage in these areas with purpose, you earn the self-esteem that you feel you deserve.

Address your weaknesses.

Our weaknesses tend to box us into a corner, or for the purpose of this topic IMPRISON us. Be rational in laying out on the table various aspects of your life. Find the perfect motivation for changing these aspects in your life and don’t expect a sudden miracle.
Building self-esteem needs purpose and the need to accept changes in your life. Know that patience is a virtue, go slow but sure.  Your habits will not change overnight. Rejoice when you make a tiny progressive change using that as a stimulus to propel further quests for personal growth and development.

Acknowledge your positive qualities
Believe in yourself. Feel good about what you have achieved so far, your ability to face the future with confidence and purpose.
Don’t be too hard on yourself.  This is a negative trait which over time, develops into low self esteem.
Stop flogging yourself over mistakes over the past. Learn from your experiences and avoid comparing yourself to other people
Indulge in life’s joys. Spoil yourself occasionally and don’t feel guilty about it.
Rest on your laurels for every victory gained. Take pleasure in, the feeling of euphoria for being able to surpass life’s challenges.
Know your limitations. Know when to push and when to rest. There will always be times when situations will come to a plateau and you are confused on how to proceed. Follow your instincts and learn to be patient.

Interact with positive and supportive people.

I always place emphasis on the need for positive networking because it’s necessary for personal development. Who you associate with influences your thoughts, actions and behaviour. Negative people tend to downplay your ideas, walk over you, patronize you etc. This significantly lowers your self esteem.  Interacting with positive and supportive people tends to reduce several bouts of low self esteem by impacting your life, making you feel loved, wanted, happy, constructively challenging you to positive growth…..
It’s important to develop a positive/personal support network.

Acknowledge compliments and constructive criticisms.

Positive compliments and constructive criticisms (this shouldn’t be likened to negative talks about your person) shouldn’t be ignored at all. When you put yourself in a position of not being teachable or unworthy praises for work done, or good character possessed, it reflects low self esteem. Be gracious when receiving compliments or criticisms because they make you better person. It creates a sense of value and allows you contribute positively to the life of others.

Find out your purpose.

Lay down in specific terms what you want to achieve in your life.  Being realistic about your goals will enable you formulate specific steps on how to achieve that purpose.  When you know what you want, you should be able to set concrete, achievable and measurable goals.
Never aspire to have unrealistic expectations because its end result is low self esteem, depression, disenchantment.

A few ideas:
1.    Sit down and examine yourself.
2.    Make a list of strengths.
3.    List your goals and be sure to create milestones going there.
4.    Break down each goal in stages.
5.    Maintain optimism.  Plan carefully and be firm in what you want to achieve.
6.    Make a time frame of what you hope to achieve in a specific period of time.
7.    Think about how people could help in reaching or achieving your goals?
8.    People behind bars often dream of a better life/future. People who experience low self esteem feel imprisoned but there is a likelihood of the prison doors being wide open without anyone imposing their stay in there.
Take action today to deal with low self esteem.

Finally, IS THERE ANYONE READY TO BREAK OUT OF PRISON?

Your comments will be appreciated.

6 Simple Steps to Improving Your Self-Esteem

By Peter Murphy a23-

Simply put, self-esteem is the mental image we have of ourselves. People with a good self-image are more likely to be successful in all aspect of their lives. Their positive attitude is likely to help them in school or a work and they are more likely to develop positive relationships than people with poor self-esteem.

People who suffer from poor self-esteem often find themselves struggling to accomplish even the most simple of goals. They often feel that they are not good enough, smart enough, attractive enough or even simple just not enough. These negative thoughts can impact upon your life every day.

There is hope, though. You can develop positive self-esteem if you are willing to put the time and energy into it.

1. View mistakes as opportunities to learn something new

Try not to think of mistakes as something bad; instead take the chance to learn something new. Life itself is a process of learning and everyone, no matter how perfect they seem, can learn new things.

Why are you any different? If you make a mistake, step back from it, think about what went wrong and determine what to do to avoid the same mistake in the future.

2. Nobody is perfect, so don’t expect yourself to be

Instead of focusing solely on perfection, focus on obtainable goals. Do not limit yourself by your need to be perfect. If you enjoy running, don’t wait to enter a race until you are certain you can win; just enter the race!

3. Stop being so negative

People who suffer from low self-esteem focusing on what they think are wrong with them. Anytime you find yourself doing this, counter yourself with one positive thought. If you find yourself thinking ‘I’m too fat too fit into those jeans’, counter the thought with something like ‘I’m proud of the fact that I’ve lost three pounds – I’ll fit into those jeans in no time at all’.

Another excellent ‘positive thinking’ exercise is to write down three positive things about yourself each night. After a week or two, go back and read them; you may be surprised to read about what a great person you are!

4. Step out of your comfort zone

Let yourself out of your ‘safe’ place and try new things. Go to a new restaurant or try out a new hobby. It is a great way to find out what you are really good at (or what you really like). Take pride in that.

5. Open your mouth

Your thoughts have merit and value, so share them with others. Do not fall into the trap that your ideas or opinions are ‘dumb’ or ‘stupid.’ The next time someone asks your opinion, tell them what you really think. Even if your opinion is different to theirs, it is still valid.

6. There is no magic wand to change things

There are some things you simply cannot change. While there are some things about yourself you can change, like your weight or your personal style, there are other things that you will simply never be able to change. Instead of hating your freckles, realize they are there to stay and try to learn to love them.

These are just a few ideas you can use to improve your self-esteem; however, the most important thing you can do is remind yourself day in and day out that you are worth it, you are more than enough.

Surround yourself with positive people who love and cherish you. Find something positive about yourself with every completed activity. The more you say positive things about yourself, the easier it will be and your self-esteem and self confidence will grow and grow over time.

Peter Murphy is a peak performance expert. He recently produced a very popular mini-seminar about how to develop high self confidence. Take a look at this new site now because it reveals some controversial ways to become confident quickly and easily: self confidence tips
