What Do You Think? (Or Go Within For Your Answers)

By Elise Fee

How often in life do we turn to a friend and ask them, “What do you think?” And then if they tell us something we don’t want to hear, we generally disregard their advice. So what is the point?

It seems pretty clear that we already knew the answer before we solicited input from others, so why bother asking? The answer is because you haven’t yet learned to trust your own knowing.

Once you really trust (not just sorta trust, but REALLY trust) your own internal GPS (your inner voice, your knowing), then you will no longer feel the need to ask others their opinions. For you will already know what is the best course of action for you.

As John Steinbeck said, “No one wants advice – only corroboration.” And Cicero said, “Nobody can give you wiser advise than yourself.” These are wise words from wise men.

Try this simple exercise the next time you think you want someone else’s advice. Pretend you are going to ask someone their opinion. But instead of actually asking them, state the question aloud to yourself. Think about what answers the other person might have given you, and then see how you feel in response to each answer.

Those answers you don’t like, you now know aren’t in alignment with your own knowing. Those answers that seem to “fit” (and that are pleasing to you) are pointing you in the direction of what you already knew, but weren’t quite able to define.

After you do this a few times with various topics, you’ll get to the place where you don’t need the exercise at all. You’ll come to a place of surety about what you know, of being more clear about what is right for you and what direction to take.

As Erica Jong said, “Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer, but wish we didn’t.”

Begin to trust in yourself – somewhere inside you do know the answers that are right for you. And in all honesty, only you know them. All that others can do is project their own perspective onto you, and do their best to help you. But you actually know yourself and what’s best for you.

As you practice trusting your own knowing, it will grow stronger and more powerful, just like a muscle that’s been exercised regularly. And it will continue to get easier and easier to really KNOW what you know, to be clear, to be sure, and to be able to hear your internal GPS.

And one day you’ll realize that you don’t really need anyone else’s input – for you can reliably follow your inner knowing. This is typically what people mean when they say, “I don’t care what anyone else thinks.” It’s not that others’ opinions aren’t valuable bits of wisdom, it’s just that this person KNOWS what is right for him/her and doesn’t want or need outside advice.

So the next time you need to make a decision in your life, turn to yourself and ask, “What do YOU think?”

Self-Awareness: 3 Steps To Knowing Yourself Better

By Nick James Smith -

“When times are challenging you learn about who you are” – Stephen Green, HSBC

It is important as leaders to be able to lead ourselves. In fact it is important for all of us to be able to lead ourselves. Timothy Gallwey in ‘The Inner Game of Work’ talks about us all being the CEO of our own company, namely our own lives, and its true – if we lead nothing and nobody else, we lead ourselves. How well are we doing it?

The bible also suggests that a man ought to examine himself because if we judge ourselves, we will not come under judgment – it talks in a spiritual sense but is this not true of the natural world as well. If we look at ourselves with an objective and critical eye (or as unprejudiced as we will ever be) we can make changes and improvements before someone else points out our faults to us – potentially an infinitely more painful process.

Self-awareness though is not something that will come easily. Many of us will be overly critical seeing all of our faults. Others of us will be verging on cocky, aware of our strengths and unconcerned or blinded to our flaws. How can we be realistic and tend towards the objective?

It seems there are three keys to becoming more aware of who we are.

Meditation

It’s not easy or quick but absolutely necessary. If we try to look at ourselves in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, all we will see is a busy person struggling to give enough time to the task.

Instead we need to step back from life, somehow detach ourselves from the merry-go-round we live and work on and find a place of silence. That might be out on a hillside or it could be in your own front room. The location is irrelevant so long as there is an air of remoteness from the pressures of life; a remoteness that is not in danger of being punctured by incoming phone messages or people clamouring for your attention. So switch off your Blackberry, walk away from your laptop, leave people behind.

Make enough time for really getting quiet as well. We can’t do it simply be sitting down for a quiet half hour. There will be too many errant thoughts still spilling in slyly from your previous concentrations. If you have less than half a day, it will be hard to enter a space of peace and start to think unadulterated thoughts.

Maybe you are the type of person who can focus on things simply by sitting still and thinking through them. Alternatively you might want to be active, doing something that focuses your thoughts. However the thoughts come to mind though, write them down. They might be instantly obvious or you may need to mull them over in the next days or weeks – what do they mean?

Self-assessment Tools

There are many tools on the market ranging from the free to vastly over-priced; from three insightful questions to books of material to wade through. Some of them however will be useful.

How you decide what to use can be narrowed down initially by what you want to find out about yourself. For example if you want a clearer idea of your personality strengths you could use persolog’s Personality Profile, a Myers Briggs Type Indicator or any of the huge range of other offerings available on the market. When you want to know what your style of creativity is, you could try a Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory. To see where your motivating abilities lie, try an xpand Skills Workbook. But these are only the tip of the iceberg to serve as examples. There are hundreds of thousands of know-yourself type products on the market so which do you use?

What have your friends and people you trust used. What can other people recommend? What can you afford or how much do you want to budget? Find someone with some ideas and start from there.

External Feedback

What do other people say about you? We tend to notice the nice things that people say, but often they are not particularly insightful. The other statements that make their mark on our conscious are the criticisms, but how many of these are valid and again, insightful? It is, however, worth delving deeper into both of these sets, because there are probably nuggets of truth in there before they have been filtered by the other persons situation and feelings.

As well as that though, you need to find an objective source of feedback. The people that you trust, whom you referred to in order to find self-assessment tools, are hopefully also people you trust to talk straight to you about your strengths and weaknesses. If they are not, search your list of close contacts and find that kind of person. It needs to be someone who knows you well, that you trust to speak the truth, and whom you respect so that you don’t discount what they say. Likewise, they need to respect you, otherwise they won’t bother themselves and may give insufficiently thoughtful answers. Also be aware of any power imbalance in the relationship before you start. Are you willing for a boss or subordinate to point out your failings? Will a subordinate tend to give you an overly positive assessment and not be critical enough?

Once you have found such a suitable person (or people – different viewpoints will give you a better overall picture), don’t simply ask them bland ‘what are my strengths?’ type questions. Instead, how about getting them to complete the same self-assessment tools that you have already completed and then compare the answers – where are the discrepancies and why have they appeared. Alternatively, simply sit down with the answers you generated yourself and ask your reviewer(s) if they agree with your findings. If your reviewers/critics/mentors have something to agree or disagree with then it makes their job easier so they are more likely to spend time with you on it and you will get better feedback.

Don’t forget to thank them in some way for their time and effort – they are then more likely to help you next time you come to complete a self-reviewing exercise.

“We could say that meditation doesn’t have a reason or doesn’t have a purpose. In this respect it’s unlike almost all other things we do except perhaps making music and dancing. When we make music we don’t do it in order to reach a certain point, such as the end of the composition. If that were the purpose of music then obviously the fastest players would be the best. Also, when we are dancing we are not aiming to arrive at a particular place on the floor as in a journey. When we dance, the journey itself is the point, as when we play music the playing itself is the point. And exactly the same thing is true in meditation. Meditation is the discovery that the point of life is always arrived at in the immediate moment.” -  Alan Watts

Meditation Anyone?

By Irene Conlan -

The Chopra Center started it’s Spring 21 Day Meditation Challenge today and it’s not too late for you to join in. For those of you who have never meditated, it is the perfect way to get started and, by the end of the three weeks you will know it is something you want to continue. For those of you who are seasoned meditators, it is a confirmation, a refresher, a change of pace that will put new energy into your daily meditation.

You don’t have to be religious or consider yourself deeply spiritual to meditate although your spirit basks in meditation. Why would you want to meditate? Research has scientifically proven that meditation is a safe and simple way to balance your physical, emotional, and mental state and its countless values have been known and practiced for thousands of years. What are the benefits?

  • It is the best stress reliever available. It’s like a switch that turns off the everyday worries, anxiety points, tensions and gives you a period of pure relaxation.
  • Clears your mind and helps you control your thoughts.
  • Enhances concentration
  • Helps you live in the moment
  • Lets you experience moments of peace, reflection, and, yes, sometimes bliss
  • Has physical benefits – lowered heart rate, respiration and blood pressure.
  • Opens the doors of creativity – often after a period of meditation you will find answers to questions you have been pondering, solutions to problems  you have been wrestling with, and insights into how to accomplish your goals.
  • your relationship with yourself will deepen and you will begin to notice an increase in self esteem,  self awareness and self confidence
  • Leaves you with a greater feeling of well being
  • And so much more

Some people shy away from meditation because they think it takes too much time. If this is a worry for you, start slowly – with five or ten minutes – and increase it as you feel the need. You will find that in the Chopra meditations they gradually increase the time spent but rarely go beyond 20 minutes. Isn’t that time well spent to realize even one of the benefits listed above? I’m doing it for the third time. Yep! 3 times. I love their meditations and get such a boost from them. Join me.

All you need to do is register. Simply go to http://www.chopra.com/meditationchallenge

6 Things to Help You Have a Good Day

By Irene Conlan -

Today I wanted to post an article about how to have a good day – even if it hasn’t been so good up until now. Well, I couldn’t find one that didn’t preach somebody’s religion or smack you in the face with platitudes, so let’s do this together. Take a moment to think about what would make your day better, maybe even make it great. What would that be? Seeing the face of someone you love and who loves you back?  Hearing your favorite music? Knowing you have purpose to your day and to your life? A smile? Money left over after the bills are paid? A pat on the back from your boss? The skies clear and the sun shines? You see the first Spring flower? What?

Think about the small things as well as the big things that would blend together to make your day great.Me? I listen to a little Bach, hear my grandson’s  giggle (even if it’s in my mind), take a deep breath and I’m good to go.

Some things that work most of the time for many of us include:

1. Visualize success and then drop your expectations. You have a  plan, or a “to do” list, or an idea of what you need to accomplish today. You have visualized yourself having great success every step of the way. Now drop you expectations of the outcome – just for today. If everything gets changed and nothing goes the way it was planned, you can deal with it if you haven’t hung everything on rigid expectations. For example, you have a big project that you have just completed and will present to the boss this morning. You have given it your very best shot.  Now drop your expectations of the outcome. Either way it goes you will not be disappointed. If it’s praise you receive, bask in it. If it is criticism, the way to fall isn’t as far as it is from the pinnacle of high expectation and it’s easier to accept suggestions for revision. If she cancels your meeting, you know it will happen later. Dropping expectations now and then makes it possible to enjoy whatever happens or at least to adjust more easily.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying never to have  expectations. Sometimes anticipating a good time is what keeps you going. I’m saying don’t always predict the outcome. Do the best you can and let what happens happen.

2. Spend some time with yourself. Take a few minutes of “quiet time.” You are the best possible company you can keep so spend some  time getting to know you better. You can use the time to meditate or write in your journal. You can think about all those things you appreciate, the people you love, the kindnesses you have been shown. You can think about your strengths and consider different ways you can  use these strengths to improve you life or the lives of others. You can  use the time to think about what you really want in life or in this day. Your day will go better if you spend some time with you.

3. Think as positively as you can – just for today. Unless your job depends on it, don’t watch the news today and instead read about something good, uplifting, new and creative or watch something on YouTube that is inspiring or so funny it makes you laugh out loud all by yourself. Just for one day, don’t compare yourself with anyone else or criticize yourself in the mirror. Be aware of words that contain can’t, won’t, don’t, could, would, should and drop them out of your vocabulary.

4. Sing. It doesn’t matter if you sound like a cat with it’s tail caught in the door – sing. It does something wonderful for the soul and lifts your spirits like nothing else can do. If you sound worse than the cat or are always in a group of people, sing inside your head. Try to stay away from the “somebody done me wrong song” or any other  music that brings you down. Pick something you like and sing.

5. Breathe. Yes, I know you’re already breathing but are you thinking about it? Take a deep breath – as deep as you can get it – hold it while you think about all that fresh oxygen that’s going in to your system. Breath is life. Think about how fantastic it is that your body does it without you having to direct it to do so. Now let it out and think about how you’ve just let go of what no longer serves you. Take another conscious, deep breath. Three of those does wonders to relax and refresh you. Without breath you wouldn’t have a day at all, much less a good one. Enjoy the breath.

6. Smile. Even if you don’t mean it right now. Smile. Your face won’t crack. Really. Smile even if there isn’t anyone around to see it. And be sure to smile at the next three people you see – give each one a big dazzling smile and see what happens.

So there’s six things to help you have a better day. I know none of them are new ideas – just the same old stuff. But it’s old stuff that works. Try one of them or all of them and see what a difference it makes.

Now go out with a smile and enjoy the day.

Practicing Meditation

By Kay Vee -

Are you one of those people who have been thinking about doing meditation? Or perhaps you’re already into it. Or maybe you haven’t given it a second thought?

Meditation isn’t just about sitting down with your eyes closed trying not to fall asleep. It is an ancient practice that anyone can use to boost many aspects of their life. It is also an integral part of the process of self-realisation, as proclaimed in eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism.

The primary purpose of meditation is to control the mind. The human mind is like a wild beast that needs to be tamed in order for it to function effectively. One who manages to keep the mind under control can work wonders in their day to day lives.

Posture:

A common posture for the practice of meditation is the padmasana posture, in which the meditator sits cross-legged with feet rested on the thighs. Image-googling ‘meditation’ throws up loads of such images. However, this does not have to be the posture for meditation.

Any position that is comfortable would do, as long as the spine is erect. If you find the padmasana difficult or uncomfortable, try meditating on a chair. It’s important to take that first step to get a feel of the calming effect of meditation.

Breathing:

Proper breathing is an integral part of the practice of meditation. Pranayama is the science of breathing that is recommended for proper meditation. Knowledge of pranayama can be immensely beneficial to a beginner of meditation as it greatly aids in calming the mind and preparing it for more intense concentration.

The benefits of meditation can be realised much more quickly if it goes hand in hand with proper breathing. It is important to understand that proper breathing helps to cleanse the chakras or energy centres located along the spine, and this ultimately leads to the manifestation of a number of benefits. These include better memory, clarity of thinking, increased will power, and confidence.

Concentration:

Another essential component of the practice of meditation is concentration. This is what most people find most difficult. The practice of fixing the mind on a single object or idea sounds impossible.

But it is important to understand that this ability comes gradually. It requires a lot of practice and perseverance. One must also understand that, without getting the posture and breathing right, it becomes much more difficult to achieve concentration.

So take it step by step. Posture, Breathing, and Concentration.

Once you have achieved the ‘meditative state’ – the state of intense concentration, you will begin to realise the benefits.

Perseverance is the key. Do not give up.
