Avoiding the 10 Pitfalls to Making Your New Year’s Resolution a Reality

By Cindy Loughran -

Many of us ushered in the New Year proclaiming that we’d drink less, exercise more, get organized, find a new job, have more fun and on and on.   And, of those who made resolutions, 25% will have abandoned them by next week.  And, as time goes on, more and more people will leave their virtuous plans by the wayside, many even forgetting what they were, never mind doing anything about them.

That would be fine except, with each failure to reach our stated goal, comes a knick in our self-esteem, a crack in our personal credibility and a deepening in our belief that we’re not good enough.

Before you give up on your New Year’s Resolution, consider these things to avoid and tips for how to counter them.

1.   Being vague about the change you want to make and the result you want to achieve
-          Create crystal clear goals and envision the outcome

2.  Relying on willpower
Design the change process into small, do-able steps that don’t require ‘will’.

3.  Taking on too much at once
Set priorities and make only one change at a time.

4.  Doing the same thing you’ve always done and expecting different results
Change your beliefs, your environment, your support network and your actions

5.  Moving away from something vs. toward it
Focus on what you want to do differently and keep your mind off of the things     you want to avoid doing

6.  Lacking self-awareness
Identify the triggers to your current, undesirable behavior so that you can anticipate them and consciously choose a different response.

7.  Assuming that more information will be helpful
Once you have basic knowledge, it is your feelings, many of which are not immediately evident that drive the change train.  Be aware of them and be sure they are on the right track.

8.  Measuring success on a scale of all or nothing
Give yourself credit for and celebrate small milestones along the way to your  final destination

9.  Doing it alone
Surround yourself with people who will encourage and support you on your journey

10.  Making changes because you think someone else thinks you should
Own the changes you want to make and be sure they are aligned with your    authentic self

To resolve or not to resolve. Is that the question?

By Irene Conlan  -

NY resolutions2010All this talk about New Year’s Resolutions – we hear it every year:  whether or not to make them; I’ll probably break them the first week; I’m not going to bother;  they’re important to me, etc.  Everyone seems to have an opinion on New Year’s Resolutions – some are avidly opposed to resolutions and some think they must be made. You can go either way on it, but let’s be sure we know what we’re talking about.

“I resolve that I will/won’t” . . .   What does that mean?

Resolve: To make a firm decision about/to change or convert/find a solution/bring to a successful conclusion.

Resolution: A course of action determined or decided on.

A resolution is a decision about a change to be brought about and it includes an action plan. It’s that simple and it’s that complex. A decision and a plan.

In other words “I have decided to _______________________ and the way I will accomplish it is to _______________________.

Some examples.

I resolve (promise myself) to lose weight in order to improve my health in 2010. To do this I plan to:

  • Find a doctor or a trainer who can help me set up a plan and stick to it
  • Be honest with myself about why I overeat and work to resolve those issues
  • Put the time and effort into it to make it work for me
  • Learn all I can about good nutrition and how to keep the weight off once I reach my goal
  • Get a “buddy”  so we can give mutual support
  • Promise myself not to “beat myself up” if I fail now and then.
  • Journal my progress so I have a record for myself
  • Consider my self a success every step of  the way
  • Build in an exercise program when it is the best time to do so and work with someone who knows how to help me “do it right.”
  • See this as a life change not a temporary fix.
  • See and feel how great it will be when you are at your goal weight: how easy it will be to move, how good you’ll look and feel in your new clothes, how you’ll like the compliments, etc.

OR

I resolve(promise myself) that in 2010 I will quit smoking. (Now this is a biggie) And the way I will do that is to:

  • Journal those reasons I want  to stop smoking – MY reasons, not what someone else has told me my reasons should be.
  • Search within to determine how committed I am to being a non smoker. “On a scale of 1 – 100 (100 being the strongest commitment) how committed am I?” (When you can honestly say at least 80%, go for it.)
  • Research the ways I can make that happen: “cold turkey,” accupuncture/accupressure, hypnotherapy, medications, the patch, with a doctor’s help, etc.
  • Chose a method or combination of methods that will work together in the best way for you.
  • Promise yourself not to quit if you slip up and that you will not consider yourself a failure if you do.
  • Start thinking now like a non-smoker.
  • If you DO smoke during that time make it hard to do so. For example, hold the cigarette in the other hand,or between the middle and index fingers. Do nothing else during the time but smoke (no phone, driving, eating, etc)? Watch yourself in the mirror while you smoke so you “get the picture.” Think about what you are doing and why.
  • Notice all your favorite times to smoke and plan what you can substitute for smoking at that time.
  • Plan for adequate nutrition so you don’t gain weight and begin to create a healthier, smoke-free body
  • Plan for what you do with your hands when you automatically want to reach for a cigarette.
  • Plan, plan, plan and stick to it.
  • Think and feel how great it will be when you no longer need to smoke – how easily you can breathe, how nice your hair and clothes will smell once the stale tobacco smoke is gone, how “kissable” you will be, how much time and money you will save, etc.

This list will be different for each individual – it must be personal to be successful and it must have an action plan that is designed for and by you.  In other words, you need to think it through and make it meaningful. Don’t decide at 11:59  on  New Year’s Eve that you need a resolution and take the first thing that pops into you head. Think it through and design a plan.

If you do it this way, you might just be incredibly successful.

Happy resolution planning!

Why your New Year’s resolutions fail – up till now.

2008resolutionsBy Sarah J. Bird -

If you’ve been blighted by broken resolutions in the past, it needn’t be like that in the future.

As January 1st hurtles towards us, thoughts inevitably turn towards those New Year resolutions that will see us give up smoking, lose weight, learn a new language, cut down on drink and a whole host of other very noble aspirations.

The reality, however, is that over 90% of resolutions will have gone up in smoke within the first seven days, and less than 5% of people will go on to make lasting and permanent changes in their lives.

One of the most common resolutions made and broken is getting fit. We join the gym, starting off the New Year with good intentions, but by February most of us are back in our old patterns. Intentions and money blown!

If you ask people why they haven’t succeeded, you tend to come up with the same stock responses time and time again: “I just don’t have the willpower”; “I’m too busy to carry out my plans”; or even more depressing – “I couldn’t be bothered after the first few days”.

For many people, it is a given that their resolutions were doomed from the very beginning due to the level of self-doubt that accompanied them. In many cases, that doubt arises from previous failures which have set up an unconscious expectation for ‘more of the same’. These thoughts are like the viruses that run in your computer, not seen until they crash the system.

This fear of failure (or sometimes fear of success) is like any other fear or phobia in that it is a learnt response. Sometimes this can be a reaction to external sources such as parents, friends or loved ones telling us that “you’re no good, you’ll never give up cigarettes, you’ve no willpower etc.”

In other cases, the messages may be internally generated – we generate our own sabotaging messages, even as we’re starting out on our resolution journey.

The bottom line, however, is that this level of self-doubt is having a genuinely restrictive effect on how we live our lives, condemning us to lifestyles which are unhappy, unhealthy and maybe even dangerous.

Thankfully, however, help is at hand in a number of simple interventions that come under the broad heading of Energy Psychology. Energy Psychology interventions work with the body’s natural energies to shift the chemical patterns in the brain that maintain unwanted habits, inappropriate emotional responses and self-limiting ways of thinking.

Through the medium of Energy Psychology, you can change your beliefs, thoughts and patterns of negative behaviour. You can take back control of your life!

Two of the most powerful and common techniques of Energy Psychology are known as TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique) and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). TAT is based on the acupuncture techniques of traditional Chinese medicine and helps remove the blocks to our energy system that cause conditions such as phobia, post-traumatic stress, panic – and even allergies.

This is done by holding acupoints and head areas related to the brain’s vision centres while you focus on your problem. The energetic/emotional charge that has been held in place is removed from the past event, allowing integration of that thought, creating harmony, peace and a sense of unity and connectedness.

EFT, on the other hand, removes negative and harmful beliefs about ability levels, removing the toxic stigma of past failures. It taps in directly to the self-image, eliminating any negative self-beliefs and strengthening the positive ones.

It involves holding a disturbing memory or emotion in mind and simultaneously using the fingers to tap on a series of 12 acupoints on the body. The science behind EFT is that when a negative experience occurs, negative emotions are felt and the body’s energy system gets disrupted, which leads to inappropriate programming inside the body.

In order to remove the negative responses, you tap into the energy system using specific cognitive statements relating to the issue. This releases the problem and brings the body’s energy field into balance.

But whatever the treatment you opt for, it’s important to realise that you can change your belief system and you can change your life.

And don’t forget that resolutions should be about the positive as well as the negative. So rather than giving up something for the New Year, why not take up something that will challenge you, stimulate you, help you grow as a person and bring untold happiness for many years to come?

Go on – you know you’re worth it!

Turning 2008′s Challenges, Learning & Fear Into a Powerful New Year

By Anese Cavanaugh -

I love the end of the year. Why? Because of the holidays? Of course. But also because it’s an opportunity to reflect on the previous year, pull learning and have it support the next year.

Whether for myself or my clients, I find that the more reflective we can be at the end of the year, and the more intentional we can be going forward, the stronger our foundation for what’s next. Of course this isn’t limited to just year to year reflection, this also can apply to project to project, client to client, event to event, etc.

In fact, we can even take the big challenges, lost opportunities and fears of the previous year, pull the learning, and convert them into “Best Practices and Intentions” to help create a powerful New Year.

Why is this important? It enables us to come from a place of growth and power, to build deeper relationships and to create better results moving forward. It puts us in a self-responsible and intentional mindset that creates results, vs. an unintentional mindset that regrets (or avoids) “failures” or mistakes and waits for results.

Done individually, it honors ourselves and who we’ve been in our business, life and leadership the last year. Done with our team (or spouse/ partner/ etc.) it honors what we’ve done together, where we’ve grown, and what we’ll do next. It basically sets us up for greater success and yes, of course, greater engagement.

There are many ways to do it. Here’s one way:

1. Reflect on this last year.
2. Identify the most challenging events of the year for you (could be in your business, life, leadership, relationships, children, etc.)
3. Pull the learning: What do you know now from that situation, that you didn’t know before? Where is the gift in that situation (as hard as it may have been)?
4. What high level (or very specific) thing will you do differently moving forward as a result? What can be done better? What do you want to make sure you remember? What system may you need to create/shift? What does your mindset need to be? (I call this creating “Best Practices” (BP) for action or mindset.)
5. Optional: For those of you who like structure, make a nice “Reference Sheet” with your Best Practices. (Years ago, I had a client who had theirs laminated and shared it with the team, years later, they still practice this.)

Of course you want to honor and identify the best things that happened as well. The successes, the wins, the delights, all of it (after all you can also capture best practices and mindset from what works!) [This is huge, by the way: don't leave this out. This can actually be trickier to do than focusing on the challenges, but that's a whole other article!]

Sound like a plan? Here’s the beauty, you don’t have to do it alone. Do it with a coach, a friend, your spouse or your team, you’re likely to unfold even more learning.

I did it myself and have posted some of my high level learnings (for myself, my team and my clients) that will serve us in 2009, on my blog. If you’d like more on this topic, simply follow the link below!

Here’s a quick taste of 4 of them:

1. Creating white space in our calendar is essential for keeping a clear, creative, healthy and engaged mind. (“BP” Result: Monthly “White Space” Blocks – offsite, out of my normal element.)
2. Taking care of our well-being is essential to our success and being able to be in full service of those around us. (“BP” Result: Clean eating, regular workouts and sleep are non-negotiable.)
3. Matters of attitude, heart and spirit are contagious, so be responsible for impact and attitude. (“BP” Result: Honor the opportunity for practicing conscious engagement. Be aware of and response-able for impact, and do best to help things go right.)
4. Gratitude makes the world go round, no matter how scary, uncertain or stressful life gets. (Result: Challenging or frustrating situation, relationship, project or feedback? Ask: What am I grateful for in this situation? What is the gift? Where is my opportunity for growth?)

These are some of mine, they’re also common themes I see with others. Can you see how pulling the high level learning and themes, and putting a “best practice/reminder” in place can turn a challenging situation into a productive one moving forward? See one that fits you? Feel free to integrate it. Nothing here for you? Create your own in a way that resonates for you.

The bottom line is this: Who knows what’s going to happen in 2009 with the economy, our businesses, our relationships, etc., who knows? BUT, there’s an opportunity to contribute to helping things go right for yourself and your organization and it’s amazing what can happen when you fully engage and take the reigns.

So, have you given yourself the space to reflect on this last year yet? Challenge: Between now and 12/31/08, set aside a couple of hours to give yourself the gift of reflection and intention. Most people do New Year’s Resolutions (and are disappointed when they’re off track by 1/20), what if you did New Year’s Reflections & Intentions and created best practices that could stick? What if?

New Year’s Resolutions

Well, are you going to make some New Year’s Resolutions or you going to let 2009 come in with out resolves of your own?  So are they realistic? Are they for one year – 2009 – or will they take a lifetime to accomplish? Are the realistic and doable?

“I resolve to bring about world peace” may not be a realistic resolution if you are in a regular 9 – 5 job or working at home doing data entry. It may not  even be a realistic resolution if you are a renowned world leader. However, “I am going to bring as much peace into my own being and my own surroundings as I can” may be something you can strive for in the new year. These resolutions should be followed by a statement such as “I will accomplish this by …” For example, “I intend to bring peace into my own life and surroundings through meditation to get myself centered, balanced and connected, by being kinder to others, by taking control of my own thoughts and emotions and by showing appreciation for all I have and for those who contribute to my life and well being.”

“I resolve to become a perfect size 4″ may be realistic if you are now a size 6 but may not be realistic if you are a size 36 – unless you can become a participant in The Biggest Loser. “I intend become a realistic size by doing the following: __________. ”

“I resolve to get my Ph.D.” is not realistic if you have not obtained a high school diploma or a GED but can be very realistic if you are finishing the work for a master’s degree.

“I resolve to have perfect health” may not be as realistic as “I intend to eat a more balanced diet and exercise on a regular basis”

“I intend to become debt-free in 2009″ may not be as realistic as “I intend to get my spending under control and cut down on my credit card debt by spending less and paying at least $_______ (e.g.$200) each month until it is paid in full.”

“I resolve  to stop watching TV” may not be as realistic as “I resolve to limit my TV viewing to 3 hours per day (or whatever you want).

“I resolve to exercise in 2009″ may not be as realistic as “I resolve to take the stairs at work ever day” or “I resolve to work out at the gym 3 times each week” or “I resolve to walk at least 2 miles a day 3 or 4 days each week”

The point is to bring them “down to earth.” If they are “pie in the sky” you will never get started much less achieve them.

You might consider the following areas when you are making your resolutions:

Health
Public service
Financial stability
Spirituality
Educational/Intellectual advancement
Emotional well being
Relationships
Home life
Your own happiness

Me? Well, I think this year my resolution is very simple and very clear: “I intend to have more fun!” That’s it. More fun. That should make the world better for me and everyone around me. I don’t think an old lady can do better than that.

Happy New Year!

How to Set (and Keep) New Year’s Resolutions

By Ki Gray -

Every year, people around the world promise themselves, next year will be different. They make commitments to improve their lives, end bad habits, and generally be better people. From losing weight to quitting smoking to spending more time with their families, people resolve to make big changes at the end of each year, but more often than not find themselves slipping back into their old patterns come mid January.

This year, if you have some big changes you’d like to make in your life, get serious about making and keeping your New Year’s resolutions. First things first, you have to identify what resolutions you want to make, and why. Do you want to save more money? Or spend more time with your kids? Or stop getting so stressed out about your job? Maybe you want to be a better listener overall, or perhaps to be less cynical, or maybe to be less of a pushover. Regardless of what your goal(s) may be, identifying them is the first step to successful resolution making.

Once you’ve identified your goal(s), make an itemized list, and include an explanation as to why you want to end, begin, or modify these behaviors. Do they get in the way of your day? Are they causing your health to deteriorate? Or maybe they just make you feel bad? Identify what the core problem is and explain it as clearly as possible, so when you’re working on actually implementing the changes in your life, you’ll have something to look back on and use as encouragement reminding you why you made the resolution in the first place.

Once you’ve got your list of resolutions all worked out, make a plan to implement them in your life. If one of your goals is to exercise more, join a gym, or schedule an hour before or after work for yourself to get a fitness regimen into your routine. If you’re resolutions include quitting smoking, buy nicotine patches, gum, or other tools to make it easier on yourself. In short, you want to equip yourself with whatever you’ll need to achieve your goals and stick to your resolutions.

Finally, devise a reward and/or punishment system to help you stay on track. Most anything will work (but be careful not to choose a reward that will impede your efforts, like, “Every day I work out, I can have a milkshake” rewards like that are counterproductive at best), so think of treats you enjoy, like a weekly lunch out with friends, or a night out, and use it to reward yourself for sticking to and accomplishing your goals. Set a reward schedule to keep track and determine whether or not you’ve earned your reward. Continuing with the example of exercising more as a resolution, let’s say you set a goal of working out four times a week. Keep track on a calendar, and if you stick to the schedule for two weeks straight, reward yourself. This system can be modified to fit almost any resolution(s) you set of course, you have to be honest, or the system won’t work.

Regardless of what you resolve to change, improve, or modify about your life, this year, commit to actually making it happen.
