The brain is the most powerful organ in the body. The brain controls and influences every other organ in the body and, in certain situations; it can even have an effect at the cellular level. When we are stressed, there are particular hormones that are produced by the body. When these hormones are released infrequently, they are essentially harmless but when they are produced too often, they can cause physical damage to our bodies. Studies have shown that cardiovascular disease can be provoked by the continuous bombardment of these bad stress hormones. Arterial damage can also result from the free radicals that are created, as part of this process. The mind can be a powerful tool, if it is used properly and overall health is greatly affected by it.

University of California researchers conducted a study focused directly on this concept. They found that actors could actually influence their immune systems by the emotions that they portrayed. In addition, Harvard, Duke University, University of Chicago, and others found that there was a relationship between improved health, a sense of well being and having a positive, happy attitude toward all things in life. In these studies it was determined that the attitude of the brain was a cornerstone to the healthy, productive functioning of the rest of the body.

We have all heard the old cliché: When life throws you lemons, make lemonade. This adage may seem trivial but there is really much more importance to it than you might think. When you send “bad vibes” into your body, there is often a residual effect that you get back. Depression, for example, can lead to a more sedentary lifestyle. The lack of an active, vibrant life can create a variety of other physical health related issues based on the mental condition that created them. Laughter is good medicine for all this. Getting in a good laugh promotes a happier outlook on life. The better you feel mentally, the more energy you will have to live an active, productive life. The more active and productive you are, the happier you will be. It is the mental “mindset” that starts this entire cycle into motion.

When depression creates a person to lead a more sedentary life, the body does not operate efficiently. Lack of exercise, poor eating habits and a lack of focus and direction can eventually lead to your metabolism slowing down. A slower metabolism means that your body is not getting food and nutrients to all the various cells, organs, tissues and muscles as efficiently. This affects not only the immune system but also your attitude and outlook on life. It is this very process that seems to create more “lemons” for you. Learn to laugh and smile when things are “not quite right.” Sulking about things doesn’t change them for the better. Smiling and laughing will. Your positive attitude will attract others who have a similar mindset. Being around those types of people will create a support system that will prove to be invaluable during tough times. Your brain is very powerful. It is wise to use it to your benefit. Positive thinking is not just a “fad.” It is an important tool that will benefit your mind, body and soul.

How do you start your day?

Sometimes the way you start your day determines  how it runs its course.  If you get up snarling, for instance, you will most likely snarl all day. If you get up fearing what’s ahead of you you will carry that fear into everything you do. If you get up saying “Good God, it’s morning” it will be vastly different than if you start your day with, “Good morning, God.”

One way to start your day on a positive note that will last for the next 24 hours is with appreciation.

The best way to do this is to get a notebook and every morning write down at least five things in your life that you appreciate. Make it current. The entries don’t have to be about great accomplishments or great ideas – small things will give you as big a buzz as the huge.

For example, this morning I got up, checked email and put on my walking shoes. I had an email  from a dear friend who is traveling and that set the tone for a great day.  It was a glorious morning.  At a time when mornings in Arizona can be 90 degrees it was a cool 70, quiet and still at 5 a.m. It was as close to what  I consider perfect as it can get. I had a great 20 minute walk and returned to have a breakfast of quiche my son had made the day before and a ripe, fresh tomato. Yummmmmm.  I answered email, put a book review on Amazon, and then heard a tiny little knock at my door. My grandson,  Jack, was the first one up and, not wanting to wake up anyone else, came to see me. (We have a duplex that has the two units connecting on the inside, so it’s easy for Jack to go from his dad’s house to mine).

We had a great  time. His six year old passion is about cars and he loves NASCAR so we turned on the TV and watched the SPEED channel, then looked up NASCAR on the computer. We found a map of Phoenix International Raceway and looked. I showed him were we live and where PIR is. We looked at pictures and had a running conversation about cars and racing. It was one of those delightful times – a perfect time between a gramma and her grandson -  that you don’t forget for awhile.

Usually I would have my list of things I  appreciate done  long before now but life takes precedence sometimes and you do things when you can. But from the first hour of this morning my list would look something like this:

I appreciate:

  • a nice message from a traveling friend
  • cool mornings in an Arizona summer
  • a neighborhood where walking is safe
  • good health that allows me to go for a brisk walk and do it with  ease
  • walking shoes  that take care of my feet and let me walk properly
  • fresh air and sunshine
  • walking meditations
  • the freedom to walk anywhere I  wish to walk at any time I wish to do it
  • people I may meet on an early morning walk who almost always smile and say hello
  • a son who can cook gourmet meals
  • eggs (one of my favorite foods)
  • breakfasting on homemade quiche
  • tomatoes that taste and smell like the tomatoes you had when you were a kid (if  you’re old enough to have ever had them)
  • Jack – Jack is  always at the top of my appreciation list but today this is  in chronological order
  • TV that lets you see things you enjoy, even if you can’t be present at the event
  • the Internet that lets you explore new and interesting things
  • and more

This represents the first hour of my day and I could find many more things to list – this doesn’t begin to cover all the things I can find to appreciate in this one hour.

I am psyched for the day.

How can I start a day with this much appreciation and not keep the feeling with me until bedtime? If I get pounded on by something negative or disruptive, I should be able to survive it with some degree of grace and ease.

Appreciation is a key tool for self improvement. It isn’t hard. It costs you nothing except the price of a notebook. It can change your day and it can change your life for the better.

What do you do when everything goes right?

We generally think about what we will do in a time when everything goes wrong. We expect times like that and try to stay prepared to “get through” them as gracefully as we can.

Why not talk about when everything goes right?

There are days (even weeks) like that, you know.

I often wonder if it is simply our focus that makes us believe things are going right or wrong. For example, this has been almost a perfect morning. It is a beautiful day in Scottsdale, I had a great night’s sleep, a good start to the day, the cat is purring next to me as I write, and most of my early morning work is finished. I lost a pound (now a total of 82 pounds lost), and the phone, so far, has been quiet. Now that’s a great beginning. I had to think for a moment if anything negative happened. Well, for starters it was cold in this house this morning and when I went on line for a temperature check I read that it is 49 degrees. It was uncomfortable enough that I got dressed instead of sitting at the computer in my nightgown.  If I wanted to get with the negative program, I could list the things that concern me and take my day on a rapid decline into negativity.

I choose not to do that.

It is not what surrounds me, it is not what I own, it is not the weather and it is not circumstances that make me happy or create a perfect day – it is my thoughts, my attitude, my beliefs, my awareness, my responses. Although other people can spew negative all around, it is my choice whether or not I let that rattle my cage and bring me down. Sometimes I have to struggle to keep it from impacting me and sometimes I have let it change my mood  before I realize what hit me. Then I have to work to get back up to a happy state of mind. (Being happy and work are not mutually exclusive).

I had  a perfect example of this earlier today. I do some work for a blog that helps people who are grieving. We get a lot of mail which I post. This morning there were two letters from women who’s husbands had died within the past year. One was “woe is me, I can’t survive this, I can’t go on, my life is over, nobody understands.” The other woman wrote, “he was wonderful, I miss him terribly, sometimes I wonder how I can manage when I have do do things he always did for me, I know I’ll make it, he would want me to be happy and I will be happy again.” My guess is that they are both right. The first will mourn for the rest of her life and have an endless pity party while the second one will learns to manage,will probably finds love again, and and will have a celebration of life party.

It sounds very Pollyannaish but I’ve never had a problem with Pollyanna. In fact, she’s right on target for the new approach to Psychology – Positive Psychology that looks for the good, the strengths, the positive happenings.  Pollyanna played “the glad game” – trying to find what made her glad regardless of what was going on around her. Perhaps we could all give that game a try.

Self-talk and positive thinking will be of great help to you if you wish to achieve perfect health. Regularly practice self-talk and maintain a positive frame of mind. Self-talk, however, requires a lot of time and conscious effort. So, you will have to spare some time for it everyday.

Understanding Metabolism

Understanding metabolism is absolutely necessary if you want to achieve good health. When you know more about your rate of metabolism, you will be better able to maintain a healthy life style with a high level of energy.

It is easy to understand metabolism. First, find out about your rate of metabolism. Some people have high rates of metabolism, while others have slow rates of metabolism. If you are highly active, you will naturally have a higher rate of metabolism, and this is quite normal. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, you will naturally have a low rate of metabolism.

To solve problems related to low rates of metabolism, you need to eat healthy, with three meals a day, and exercise regularly. Exercise will help you burn the excess fat, and when you burn fat, your rate of metabolism rises.

If your rate of metabolism is high, you have to learn to get rid of the excess energy. Like those who have a low rate of metabolism, you too have to eat healthy to maintain yourself at a healthy weight. Healthy eating and regular exercises will help you maintain a serene frame of mind and normal weight.

The keys to a healthy body and a serene frame of mind are regular exercise and healthy dietary habits. In addition, it is important to quit harmful habits such as alcoholism and smoking. Take the following simple tips into consideration:

Eat only three inexpensive meals everyday.

Don’t drink any liquid in between meals, as it is not good for your health.

Drink water or any other liquid thirty minutes before and after meals.

In addition to following these simple techniques of healthy eating and exercising, practice the technique of positive self-talk and positive thinking. Before long, you will discover that you have achieved perfect health and happiness.

Positive Attitude – How to Unlearn Sickness and Stop Catching Disease

Health or sickness; wealth or poverty; success or failure — all begin in the mind. Your physical body and material affairs reflect your state of mind. With the right positive attitude and a strong belief in health you can prevent sickness from entering your life.

Do you Expect to Get Sick?

Most people have been mentally conditioned to accept sickness from the beginning of their lives. From the minute you are born, you are taught to believe in sickness.  You learn that you are supposed to be sick at certain times of the year.  You learn to believe in the very idea of sickness.

While you are growing up, your parents expect you to get a whole catalog of diseases that the so-called medical authorities say children are supposed to catch. You are supposed to have the measles and the mumps, whooping cough and chicken pox. And as your got older, you ‘learned’ that certain aches and pains were to be expected with middle age. Many parents have unconsciously conditioned their children to expect sickness.

I remember when I was a child, whenever I sneezed, my mother would tell me that I was catching a cold.  And without fail, every time I sneezed I would end up catching that cold.  In fact, I was so conditioned by this childhood experience, that for years, every time I sneezed, I would subconsciously hear my mother saying, ” You’re getting a cold.”  That simple statement had an effect on me until I learned to master my own thinking.

You Can ‘Unlearn’ Sickness and Know Health.

I learned that if I stopped thinking sickness and stopped expecting sickness, I would stop getting sick.  And I learned to block any idea of sickness out of my mind and out of my life!

Think Health and Speak Health!

Most people are just too interested in what’s wrong with them and what’s wrong with the world.  They give negative ideas all of their attention, and negative conditions continue to enter their lives. I am always warning you that the more you give your attention to negative conditions, the more negative conditions you will have. The more you think and talk about your symptoms and your aches and pains, the more symptoms and aches and pains you are going to have.

Think Only Positive Thoughts About Health.

It is very important to only let your mind think positive thoughts about health. It is very important to only let your mouth say positive things about health.  Watch what you think or say, lest you become “ensnared by the words of your mouth.”  (Proverbs 6:2)

Never think thoughts such as, “I think I’m getting a cold,” or “I’ll never get over this sickness,” or “I’ve got a bad back.”  These negative thoughts cause you to get sick and prevent you from getting well. Instead, say to yourself on a regular basis, “I AM healthy and I will stay healthy … God-in-me is my health.”  This positive affirmation heals you and keeps you well.

So if you don’t want the disease that the national disease center plans for you this year, refuse to believe in it. Refuse to take part in any idea of sickness.  Say to yourself, “God-in-me is my health.”  Learn the mastery of your own mind and your own thinking, and the negative beliefs entertained by the world-mind will no longer influence you.

But what was taught was that if you quiet your mind, empty it of all thought, Satan and his demons would enter and, taking over, would never leave. I was appalled. And, even though I had attended that chuch for almost twenty years, I never went back. There were other problems for me but this was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back.
