In this day and age the internet is full of resources that display techniques and methods of self help and positive thinking. What many these resources don´t mention is the tactics of self talk, this has to be a unique method when it comes to self help, and especially positive thinking. The mind is a very powerful thing and we will only ever get out of it what wee put in, or what we let others put in – so it remains vital that we use self talk to input some real positive thinking and vibes in order to maximize our self help efforts.

In general when we think of self help techniques, or positive thinking techniques the self talk tactic is very often overlooked and underestimated, and many people find it difficult to have the confidence in their own beliefs and feel they must here the encouragement from others, and this is a primary mistake. By talking things over with ourselves it helps us better know ourselves, and the situations we find our self in and therefore find easier, and better solutions. To ensure self help we have to ensure positive thinking, and to ensure this we must encourage ourselves and not wait for others to do so.

You will find that by understanding and learning the self talk method that you will soon be reaching levels of self help that before were unobtainable and that your positive thinking attitude exceeds what you were expecting – this is the reason we say that many overlook and underestimate this tactic of self help. To succeed in whatever we do one must believe in ones self, and to do this we must be thinking positive and encouraging our self – therefore self talk will become a daily part of your life, as will success.

It won´t take long for your positive thinking to help you improve with your productivity levels at work and home, you will feel more energetic, you will value yourself and your actions more – and this is what self help is all about, helping you succeed. Success breeds success and so positive thinking and self talk are two of the best self help tactics to bring you to that first hurdle of reaching success.

After you reach the first hurdle and overcome it you will find that the future hurdles become lower and easier to leap over as your new self help methods come into play and you find yourself as a natural positive thinking person. Self help is not complicated, but it is a thorough method of self help and to ensure that you gain optimal use of the technique I would encourage you to educate yourself about it a little prior to commencing the positive thinking attitude with this technique of self help.

So remembering that positive thinking brings success, which in turn brings further success, and with the urge to find a self help solution to improve your quality of life and lifestyle visit [http://www.positivethinking2009.com/] where you can find out much more about self talk and how it will help you.

So, have you noticed? Things are tough all over. Whether you are rich and well-off, average middle class or living at or below the poverty level; things are tough for everyone. I am sure to get several arguments regarding how “tough” it is for those who are considered to be living in the “well-off” group. But, they, too, are finding their economic situation to be harder than it was. Now, you’re saying…”Gee how hard can it be when you a zillionaire?” Well, consider this comparison: if your investments, 401K, stock, etc. had $10,000 in it 2 years ago, now it has less than $5,000. That’s at least a 50% loss. But, let’s say you had $10M your investment account just 2 years ago and now you have only $5M. That, too, is a 50% loss; both situations are the same pain, just on a different scale.

Today, as you’re traveling down Main Street, you notice empty buildings where you shopped many times. You see restaurants where you brought your family and friends to eat several times now closed and gone. If you travel into an industrial park, you’ll see large buildings empty; “For Lease” and “For Sale” signs are everywhere. Big name companies and small alike are gone.

You listen to the radio, watch TV, read any newspaper and you see and hear just how bad the national & international economies are and how long it’s been this bad. Unemployment is high – too high; houses are “underwater;” the cost of everything has skyrocketed, and businesses are leaving the community, the state, even the country. Here again, things are tough and have caused everyone much pain.

But, what about those people who are still lucky enough to have a job? How many times do you hear them constantly complain about what they have to do, how much work they are expected to accomplish in the workday, rant about the decisions that are made, complain about their boss, complain about their fellow workers, rant about the traffic and travel time to get to/from work, holler about the weather, etc. While they are doing all this complaining and spouting negativity, they are gaining the reputation of having a bad attitude.

A negative attitude prevents you from getting ahead in almost every company. Many who are identified by management as negative employees get passed up at the time of salary increases and promotion. When this happens, they have even more reasons to be negative.

So, now that you are inundated with so much negativity everywhere, you wonder how you can Stay Positive when so much Negativity is going on around you. Let’s start by stating some facts of life:

You can’t change the color of rain. Which is to say, if you are unable to directly affect the situation, then why spend your time & energy complaining about it? When you are done with the ranting about how bad things are, you will notice that you are right back where you were when you began ranting. Nothing has changed; things are still tough.

Misery loves company. Most people who are negative tend to associate with other negative people; negativity attracts negativity.

Now let’s be honest. There are two sides to all of us: the positive side and the negative side. Everyone is vulnerable to having their negative side appear once in a while; it happens to us all. But, we do not have to be negative all the time about almost everything! If you are unable to have a positive impact on the issue or concern that has caused you to be negative, then why be negative. Positivity is no stronger a human characteristic than negativity. Both sides have equal strength. It is you who has control over which one you will be.

All of us have to deal with issues, concerns, challenges, and problems as long as we live. Our problems and challenges go away when we “go away.” Cemeteries are filled with people who have no problems and no challenges to deal with anymore. Since you are alive, you guessed it, there will be even more problems and greater challenges ahead of you. You and I just can’t avoid it.

We can choose how we handle adversity. We have control, but, we must learn how to use it, how to stay positive in this very negative world. Think about this…If you are unable to get through the tough times, you can not enjoy the good times. Life has its cycles. There will be many good times in your life and there will be many tough times.

If you are not in control of your attitude during the tough times, you will be totally unable to recognize the good times when they are present. You will have become so mentally conditioned to be negative that you will not be able to be positive when good things are happening all around you. Because it always seems like the tough times come on so quickly and last so much longer than the good times, when we focus on the negative, we don’t even see good times beginning to emerge.

So, just how to can you stay positive in a negative world:

1. Most importantly: Count Your Blessings. You have several blessings in your life, but you must learn how to focus your mind on counting them. Are you presently in good health? Are your loved ones in good health? Count this as one of the most important blessings you have.

2. Learn the skills of Directing Your Thoughts, Controlling Your Emotions and Ordaining Your Destiny

3. Learn the Power of Positive Self-Suggestion. Suggestion is the highest form of motivation. Self-suggestion being the highest of the three types of suggestion. Self-suggestion is what you tell you on how to think, act and react to the world around you, whether at home, work or play.

4. Set & Achieve a Goal, no matter how small you think it is, Daily.

5. Be a Good-Finder in others. Encourage others to be better than they are, show them how to do better in what they are engaged in.

6. Learn to talk with others, not at them.

7. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. You can do it! (whatever it is) The only things you can’t do are violate the laws of God or your fellow man and you can’t fail!

8. Share a Part of You that is Good with others.

9. Engage in Activities to Improve Yourself. Read positive books, do research on subjects you do not now know, use the Internet to expand your knowledge and know-how, engage in a positive conversation with family, friends, and fellow employees. Control the conversation to be a positive one and do not allow any negative input.

10. Remember…You are a Mind with a Body. The body will do whatever the mind, that you control, tells it to do, including speaking those words coming out of your mouth. You are a mind with a body and YOU decide what comes out, either positive or negative. Learn how to control your mind.

Keep this in mind: we all get what we deserve in life. We don’t get any more or less than we deserve. We all want more, we all believe that we’ve earned more than we have; we all believe that we deserve more, and we want it now. But, in the end, we get only what we deserve.

In life, there are only three things needed to achieve happiness. We all believe that there are more, but if you are in good health (which is always the foundation), the remaining three are: Worthwhile Work to Do, A Future to Look Forward To and having Someone to Love. That’s it. If you have these 3 and you are in good health, then YOU HAVE IT ALL. There is no more – Stay Positive and Be Happy.

Like so many in corporate America today, Susan needed more balance in her life-but she did not know how to get it. Faced with a 60-hour work week and a lengthy daily commute, Susan was left with little time for outside interests. Her job was literally draining her of energy, and her attitude at work was changing, especially within her business unit. Who is Susan? Susan is a composite of thousands of executives who are pushed to the brink by trying to juggle demands on the job with demands at home. Susan could be you. At work, Susan was accepting extra work and projects and was not able to say “no” to her boss. She became frustrated and drained. By accepting everything and not speaking up for herself, Susan became increasingly frustrated and angry. She became more demanding and less flexible with her own team. Her usual encouragement to “think outside the box” was replaced by a controlling “do as I say” attitude. Micromanagement became her style. As a result, her staff appeared less involved in their work. They began to distance themselves from her. On the social front, Susan was also making unhealthy choices-spending time with friends and family that were draining and burdensome and then keeping silent and angry about it. She did not have anybody to talk with about her experiences and frustration, so there was no one who could help her develop the perspective necessary to propel her toward greater personal fulfillment. Like so many other executives, Susan believed that if she increased her hours and worked harder, life at work would get better. Are you just like Susan? Do you think that if you become more demanding and micro-manage your employees, the job will get done? Do you think keeping silent makes the problems go away? To anyone who still believes this way, this is your wake up call. It does not work. Change is the answer-change coupled with a shift in perspective. But sustaining meaningful change is never easy. It takes desire, intention, a clear vision, a good plan . . . and commitment. Change also takes time. In our increasingly busy lives we often get overwhelmed with demands on our time. Complacency sets in, and we lose the ability to overcome inertia-the tendency of a body at rest to stay at rest or of a body in motion along a certain path to stay in motion along that path. To change, we must create structure that encourages and supports change, and it begins with an all-important shift in perspective. Instead of living in silence and hiding-or being overly controlling in our work relationships-or feeling that we need to leave our job-we can start by considering a more fulfilling alternative. In Susan’s case, she looked at what energized her, what she was good at, and what gave her joy. She put limits on the amount of work she was willing to take on and began speaking up to make sure her needs were heard and met. She shifted from being a controlling team leader to one that encouraged risk-taking and “thinking outside the box.” The result? Greater group cohesion and less stress for everyone involved. Group members felt less restricted and more empowered. Susan added greater value to her company and the results were visible and rewarded. More opportunities-the kind of opportunities Susan wanted-started coming her way. At the same time, Susan developed criteria for what she wanted in her relationships. She evaluated her current relationships and determined which ones needed to be addressed. She began to speak up to make her needs known, and in some cases she ended unfulfilling relationships. As she revised her standards and set limits, she gained more energy to try new activities outside of work-re-awakening areas of interest that she had long ago left behind. Susan’s success story can be your success story, too. And it starts with four simple steps. You must . . .

1. Be clear about your intentions to make a change;
2. Be willing to experiment and to try new strategies to achieve the changes you want;
3. Be willing to learn what works and what does not, and to make adjustments;
4. Not let fear stop you from making these significant changes.

To successfully change-whether on the personal or professional front-you need perseverance, feedback, and support to help achieve your goals. But change you can . . . and sometimes you must.
You’ve probably heard, “The only time we have is now, this our present moment.” So this means that we can only live in the present, act in the present and experience life in the present moment. You may be asking, “If this is the case then why do I have so many problems in my life?”

Everything that happens in our life is created by a choice we made – consciously or unconsciously – via the thoughts and beliefs that we are holding in the present moment. The past is really only a memory of the past. If we dwell in the past we continue to bring forward the same past experiences whether good or bad by putting energy into them in the present moment. Our future, the things we desire, our plans or even things we are dreading are still all created in our present, right now, state of mind. This means that we can only experience joy in this now moment of time. A happy memory is really only a present feeling of happiness stimulated by thinking about the past and the only pain we can experience is the pain of the present moment. A painful memory brings forth pain and sadness that we experience in our now.

If we can get the present moment right by experiencing peace, harmony, joy, love and happiness in our now – our past and future problems will take care of themselves.

You may be asking, “How can this be possible?”

We need to monitor our habitual thinking patterns as these form our beliefs thus create our now experience. What we think about internally we bring about externally. Some people think constantly about all sorts of unpleasant things that might happen to them. They imagine quarrels, injustices, accidents, misfortunes of every kind and because they invested so much time imagining them, they truly believe them and most of what they created in their mind will be created in their life experience.

Your thoughts and images should be focused on only those things you would really like to come to fruition in your own life. Anything good is possible just as all the negative imaginings are possible. Make today the beginning of your new life. Imagine that you are living your dream life now. Remember you only have this present moment and it is this present moment that creates your next present moment.

Begin by imagining that you have no fear and nothing can stop you from doing whatever it is that makes your heart sing. Imagine that you are healthy, peaceful, giving, happy and kind to everyone you meet. Imagine all your relationships are healthy and they bring to each of you love and joy. Imagine you have the perfect job, the one that was designed by your soul; it nourishes your creativity and brings joy to your heart. It provides the money you need to not only survive the earth plane but thrive! To be happy, act happy!

Begin to see everything in your experience with a whole new set of eyes. When you view a discarded bag of Burger King on the sidewalk instead of becoming angry that someone littered; pick it up and as you throw it into the garbage give thanks that someone was blessed to eat today. View the world as kind and filled with love. Be love and see love.

When you find love in everything… your present moment will be filled with love. Every minute of every day we create in our now moment. You have the power within you to suffer in pain or live with joy, what will you continually choose?

With Love and Tremendous Gratitude, Many Blessings!

Namaste,

We have been extremely upset at my house this week. Let me tell you the story.

My son and I share a house. (Oh this works extremely well. He lives on one end and I live on the other and we’re independent but have someone around if we need them.) He has joint custody of my grandson who is with us half the time. We have had him everyday after school since the early days of day-care and we enjoy him every other weekend. He is now eight years old and more fun than you can begin to imagine. He sees everything through the eyes of a child but somehow often has the wisdom of a seasoned old sage. Sometimes the two views get a bit tangled and it’s wonderful fun. He is such an integral part of our lives.

His mother has moved to California and the judge allowed her to take Jack with her – temporarily – until a full hearing can be scheduled. We are broken-hearted and a lot of crying took place yesterday as we prepare to say goodby today. I can’t begin to imagine this house without Jack in it. He and his dad have a bond like no father and son I have ever seen – such mutual love and admiration there. I watch it on a daily basis as it grows stronger and more beautiful. Talk about two peas in a pod! They have planned so many things for the Spring which are now no longer possible. Jack has been in Little League baseball for three years and this year he was so excited about the next step up and playing with his team again. His grandfather was the baseball hall of fame umpire, Jocko Conlan, and our family loves baseball. There will be no more baseball for Jack. We just moved into a house near his school and we now have a swimming pool but Jack won’t be here when it’s warm enough for the first chilly swim. He helped us pick this house and the pool was the “selling point.” And the neighborhood is filled with kids from his school. We didn’t have a chance to find them yet. My list goes on and I found myself at the edge of wallowing as I pondered the next few months without my grandson. The pain is palpably real.

This is Monday. A new day. A new week.

What am I going to do with it?Am I going to wallow or am I going to make a plan that works and get on with it? It’s my choice. Do I want to be sad or put on a happy face until my mood grows to match it?

For starters I am going to help Jack think of things to look forward to in San Diego. He needs to leave here basking in love and positive thoughts about his new place to live and about his new school. He doesn’t need to carry the burden of our sadness or feelings of loss. He has his own “stuff”to deal with.

I need to put the pity party behind me, clean up the mess, and get back into my “positive thinking” mode. I know the drill. I know how and what my thoughts create and I am allowing my thoughts to create more of what I DON’T want. Yikes!

When Jack wakes up this morning and comes wandering over to my side of the house, he will see a smile on Gramma’s face and will get a morning hug that has love and optimism in it that simply engulfs him. We will talk about the good things waiting for him in San Diego and waiting for him here when he comes back.

This is a new day. I choose to feel good about it and make the best of it, I choose to show Jack how to do that as well. The pain of loss is real and it is still quite sharp but I can choose to keep going in a positive way. I refuse to be a victim here.

The point is – I choose.

So do you.

Have a super, duper day.

Many of us go through hardships in our lives and these can have a negative effect on our thinking. Even when we are through with those events, the memories remain, coming to the surface whenever we go through a similar experience. Moreover, negative thinking due to such experiences becomes ingrained in our mind due to those events.

Death of a loved one, joblessness, stress, and family disputes can all drain away the energy from one’s life, making us question life itself or why we exist in the first place. For some people, it goes even further. Negative thinking becomes a part of their thinking, a part of their cognition, or thought processes. Sometimes they get so entangled with negative thinking that they are thinking that way all the time! Even if they are presented with anything good, they will still think negative and turn the good events into bad ones. People who suffer from depression go through these effects. However that is actually quite an advanced stage and beyond the scope of this article since depression cannot be cured just with the use of positive thinking. However even if we do not have depression, we can still be affected by negative thinking since after all, we are all human beings. So how do we get rid of this habit of negative thinking that gets in the way of personal success? We go for positive thinking! There are many ways of doing this.

One of the first is to take up the company of positive thinkers. Always try to spend time with those people who are always working hard and thinking positive about life. If you go to college, there will be two kinds of people in your class — the people who work hard, get good grades, and are always thinking about the future and how they will achieve it. On the other hand there are those who are just living in the present, and wasting time with pointless pursuits. Spending time with those who want to progress will make you think like them and give you hope.

If you have a hobby, then pursue it with the greatest vigor. If you play chess, then join a chess club. If you like running, then do it every day. Set new goals everyday of achieving the faster mile, and so on. Finally, set goals that are apart from making money or going for a vacation. Take yourself out of your life equation and start thinking about others who may need your help.

All these things will help you practice positive thinking, setting you on the path to personal success and help achieving your goals with the least effort possible.

Vibrant health involves a set of practices on a daily basis. This article explores those practices.

By Joanie McMahon -

1.) Vibrant health comes when we learn how to focus your thoughts into “good feeling” things. Our thoughts are the key to all wellness. When we are thinking positive thoughts and as a result, feeling positive emotions, we are doing the best thing we can do for our wellness. The universe is a vibrational universe, it responds to our emotions. When we are feeling good, good feeling things come into our life. And likewise, when we are feeling negative, negative things come into our life. We always experience the emotional equivalent of that which we are thinking. For example a person who is feeling angry most of the time may experience heart problems or a stroke or if they are just angry a little, they may experience a car accident or something like that. What we are receiving in our life is ALWAYS a vibrational or emotional match to what we are thinking and feeling.

2.) Vibrant health includes Drinking Pure Water: Water controls our body temperature, cushions our joints, removes wastes, transports nutrients and oxygen to our cells and protects our organs and tissue. Our bodies are primarily water and each day we lose a lot of water through perspiration or urination. This water must be replaced in order for our bodies to come back into balance. Many people drink coffee or alcohol or soft drinks and each of these drinks actually deplete the body of water. They dehydrate us! So drinking lots of water each and every day is crucial for the entire body to thrive.

3.) Vibrant health also includes eating organic fruits and vegetables. Organic fruits and veggies have all of the essential minerals and vitamins in them that are necessary for wellness. When we eat fruits and veggies that are sprayed with chemicals the essential minerals and vitamins are destabilized, not present. Without the essential minerals and vitamins, all sorts of health issues come forth.

4.) Vibrant health has to include having fun! Doing things that are fun for us is essential for vibrant health. It is well worth our time to explore what brings us joy and moving towards those things and doing them often. If living near the ocean is fun for us, then that is information for you to move towards.

5.) Exercise is essential for maintenance of vibrant health. We were made to move. Each and every day finding some way to do aerobic exercises like walking or swimming or biking or any exercise that gets the heart pumping. Aerobic means with oxygen. As well, stretching for flexibility is crucial for keeping limber and toned and doing strength building exercises like keeps us strong.

6.) Trusting our inner guidance is another key to vibrant health. Truly believing that we know at a deep level what is best for us is essential to our well-being. Even though others can be helpful in giving suggestions, only we ourselves know what is best for us. When we learn to truly trust our own guidance coming forth from within, then we have a guidance system we can count on. People can get so lost in thinking that others have the answers to our happiness, and really only we have those answers. Only we know what is best for us in any given moment or day.

According to my dictionary happiness is “the feeling of being happy”, ok that was helpful, so what does “happy” mean? Happy, according to the same source, means “feeling, showing or causing pleasure or satisfaction”. Ok, let’s see what Wikipedia tells us about happiness, according to this site, happiness is a “state of mind or feeling characterized by contentment, love, satisfaction, pleasure or joy”.

In my view, the keyword here is “state of mind”. People often try to find happiness in possessions, places or other people only to be miserable because true happiness can only be found within themselves. The people, places and things that you attract into your life that make you happy only serve to enhance the love that you already have for yourself.

The Law of Attraction tells us that we attract whatever we focus on most and whatever we already are. So if you want to attract more happiness, you need to feel happy, but how can you do it if your happiness depends on outside conditions? We can choose to take our life under control. If we do that and learn to find the happiness that already is within ourselves, we then magnify this feeling thanks to the Law of Attraction.

Of course it’s easy to be happy when everything is well, the true challenge and victory is when we are able to be connected to our inner selves even in times of adversity. We must know that everything is on its way to being wonderful, because it is from this knowing that everything ends well.

To become a master at thinking positive things into existence and creating a happy life you might need some help. Well I’m glad to present “Read Me – I Am Magical” available at http://www.master-of-thought.com and Amazon.
“For those who believe no proof is necessary. For those of you who don’t believe no proof is possible. -Stuart Chase

Being in alignment with your desires and goals from the inside out will help you to achieve whatever it is you want in life. But, the problem is that most people do the opposite. They have a conscious desire to either find a relationship, get out of debt, lose weight, heal from heartache or whatever the case may be.

But their inner beliefs are what stop them from getting what they desire. For example, let’s say you want to meet someone to share your life with. You’ve put yourself out there but yet you still come up empty handed so to speak. Well, 9 times out of 10 it’s because your inner dialogue goes something like this: I really want to meet someone but I’m getting too old, no one will want someone with 3 kids, I’ve tried but all the good ones are taken, who am I kidding I’m a loser at love and on and on.

Or, say you want to lose weight but the only thing you’ve lost is time wishing you would lose it. Your inner dialogue might be: it’s too hard to lose weight, I don’t have time to exercise, food is my only pleasure in life, no matter what I do I know I will only gain it back, exercise is too difficult to start now, etc.

Now here’s the deal, beliefs are thoughts that you tell yourself over and over again whether they are true or not. And, if you continue to believe them and internally repeat them that is exactly what you will create and exactly what you will experience.

So, even though you consciously say, I want whatever it is, internally you are not in true alignment with what you desire, therefore, that is why you are still in the same position living your life with what you don’t want!

Worse yet, because most times you are more focused on the problem or lack of something you want in your life you are attracting more of what you stay focused on…ugh!

How do you get yourself in alignment with what you want? Start to focus on what you want instead of what you don’t want and stop making excuses in your mind as to why you will never have it.

If you change your mind, if you change that inner dialogue and start to believe it before you see it you will begin to experience it in time. If you don’t believe what I’m saying, look at what you ARE focused on (lack, debt, no love, heartache, too fat, etc.) and I bet it’s exactly what you are living!

Changing that inner dialogue does take some conscious effort to flip the script but if you don’t do it, start to accept your life just the way it is and learn to like it.

On the other hand, if you truly want to live a better life then start to believe you can and each time you start to walk down It-Will-Never-Happen-For-Me Lane, instead steer your mind to I-Know-I-Can-Do-This Highway and go for the ride of your life.

Make your thoughts serve you to bring about what you truly want instead of limiting you to what you already have and don’t want. The Law of Attraction, as cliché as some may think, is alive and well and you are living proof of it.

Keep your mind focused on where you want to go and how you want to live, release the fear and worry that go along with lack and wanting. When you are in a state of wanting, you send that vibe out into the world and it will only bring back to you more wanting.

If you get your conscious desires and your internal thoughts in alignment, that harmonious vibration will bring about the kinds of changes in your life that you used to believe would never happen.

We all have a choice as to what we say to ourselves about any given situation, so choose your thoughts wisely for they have the power to make a difference in how you experience your life!

A few years back, I was asked to present a series of workshops to some high-school seniors on the subject of Positive Thinking.

It’s a subject that’s near and dear to my heart, but I approached the assignment with some trepidation. The idea of leading a group of seventeen- and eighteen-year-olds for fifty minutes was for some reason more challenging than speaking to adults.

What Exactly is Positive Thinking?

Why is it important? How do you develop it? How do you keep a positive attitude in the face of negative circumstances?

And these kids expected answers. It caused me to do some real soul searching as to what I think a PMA (positive mental attitude) is and how to apply it in our lives.

To me, Positive Thinking means a “can-do” attitude-an attitude that allows one to see the best in all circumstances. It means facing a given situation and looking for the opportunities that almost always lie within. It’s really a matter of focus. It’s a little bit like when you’re buying a new car and you notice all the cars on the road like the one you’re buying. They were always there before, but you just didn’t notice them because you weren’t looking for them. When you’re looking for good, you’ll certainly find it. That’s Positive Thinking.

Positive thinking is not Pollyanna Thinking. Being a “Permagrinner” is almost as bad as being a negative thinker. It’s an unwillingness to see things as they are and ignore the things that could present a danger to us and our well-being.

We need to be realistic and address the problems with which we’re faced. If you’re tending a garden and ignore the weeds, you’ll find your garden over-run by them. You have to be aware and take care of problems. Positive Thinking is definitely not avoidance.

Negative thinking is all too common. It doesn’t take any effort to be a negative thinker. I call them “Stinking Thinkers”-people with Mental BO. You know the kind of people I’m talking about-the kind of people who brighten up a room-by leaving. They’re cynical and depressing to be around. They complain too much and offer too little, if any, help.

Positive Thinking is infectious. Unfortunately, so is negative thinking. Emerson wrote, “A man becomes what he thinks about all day long.” What do you think about? Where’s your focus? Do you dwell on your problems, or do you focus on the way you’d like them resolved? It’s your perspective that determines whether the glass is half full or half empty.

Our attitude affects people more than we may realize. When we approach problems with enthusiasm and high expectations, and when we share our optimism, we cause others to look at things in new and more optimistic ways. We help shift their perspective.

When I’m hiring someone, I place more weight on their attitude than on their skills and knowledge. Skills and knowledge can always be learned. Positive Thinking can be learned too, but I find few people willing to develop it. The belief is often, “that’s-just-the-way-I-am.”

How Do We Develop a Positive Attitude?

One way is to associate with positive people. We may have to change our environment and even choose new friends. This may seem drastic, but you can’t afford to be with people who drag you down. In order to be successful, you have to have a supportive atmosphere.

We can also read good books. You might want to start with Norman Vincent Peale’s classic, The Power of Positive Thinking. He coined the acronym and phrase “PMA.” Any book that is encouraging, inspiring and positive will do.

No matter how good your PMA might be, it takes constant attention. You eat every day, don’t you? Your attitude is like your body; it needs to be nourished. You need to feed it with good, healthy food-positive people, good books and an inspiring environment. Just like you go to work every day, you need to go to work on yourself every day. If you do, you’ll build and maintain a Positive Mental Attitude.
