Rediscover the Joy of Living – Eight Ways to Find More Happiness and Peace in Everyday Life

By Emily J. Jacques -

Apparently, many of us living in the Western world have lost our joy of living. At any time, one in twenty Americans aged twelve and up are clinically depressed. Those of us who have escaped that level of depression fight it on a regular basis. Whether it’s a result of PMS or stress at work, even the most positive person can sometimes find him or herself down in the dumps.

Of course, those who receive the label of “clinically depressed” often have physiological problems at the root of their depression. In general, however, our lost ability to enjoy life stems from being too busy, and/or listening to the wrong voices.

With that in mind, let’s look at eight ways you can reduce stress and find more happiness and peace in everyday life.

1. Stop watching the evening news. You don’t “need” to watch it. You’re not going to be less informed if you miss it. Most of what you see there is either fabricated and/or biased in such a way to make you afraid. Or angry. Or hateful. Spend the last hour or two of your day engaged in quiet activities that you enjoy. You might find yourself considerably less depressed just be doing this one thing!

2. Take regular nature walks. Quiet walks among the trees or along a body of water do wonders for the soul. And don’t bring your cell phone or iPod along! Consider these walks as breaks from the modern world.

3. Early to bed and early to rise. Admit it-you get crabby and nothing seems to go right when you’ve gone without enough sleep for several days. Unless you’re already going to bed between nine and ten p.m., make a goal of getting in the habit of going to bed an hour or two earlier. Then stick with it, and watch how much easier life becomes to endure!

4. Explore Bach flower essences. I couldn’t believe it the first time I tried this remedy. I had that horrible PMS symptom where I hated everyone and everything. A couple drops in a glass, a few sips, and

Wham! I was back to a good mood in less than ten minutes. You can find Bach flower essences at health food stores, and find more information about them both online and in the alternative medicine section of bookstores.

5. Eliminate an activity. If you are busy with volunteer work, on top of a regular job, five or six days of the week, do whatever is needed to give yourself an extra free evening or two (or a free weekend at least once a month). The world won’t fall apart because you step down in order to have the leisure time you need to be creative and productive when you are working.

6. Cut back on your kids’ activities. Your family will bond and cooperate better if you spend time together-which you won’t do if three kids are in three different places four or five nights a week.

7. Take up a hobby that you love. Now that you have more free time, pick that knitting or woodworking or poetry writing back up. Or if you’ve never really had a hobby, assess your interests and gifts and begin a new one.

8. Listen to music you love during down times of the day. It will relax your mind and body, and generally help you to feel refreshed.

Are you ready to live a happier, more peaceful life? Try some of these suggestions, and watch your bad mood become a distant memory.

Health Tips on Reducing Stress From Our Daily Life

By Meena Choudhary -

“It’s driving me crazy.”

“I’m going through a lot of pressure.”

“It’s getting onto my nerves.”

“I’ll have a nervous breakdown.”

If you ever had similar kind of feeling then you are under stress. Stress has become an integral part of our daily life. While we have learned to accept it, we’ve not learned to eliminate it. Here are a few health tips to help reduce stress from our daily life:

  • Don’t pile up your emotions, vent it out: Express your feelings, instead of keeping them inside you.
  • Think Positive: Your brain reacts according to how you think. Think good about yourself, and you will feel good about yourself.
  • Eat Healthy: You can handle stress better if you are healthy. Start your day with a hearty breakfast to stay energized throughout the day. Eat a balanced and nutritious diet.
  • Avoid Junk Food & Aerated Drinks: Junk food is just like the junk folder of your mailbox. If you visit corrupted websites, your junk folder impairs your mailbox with viruses and spywares. Bad food does the same to your stomach. Aerated drinks are no good either, they create gas in your system, makes you feel bloated, corrodes the intestinal lining (which can cause stomach ulcers) and interferes with digestion.
  • Mood Elevators or Alligators: Alcohol, Cigarette, Drugs, Caffeine may all provide temporary relief from stress, but once you are caught in their clutches, there is no escape. You will slowly but surely get devoured by it like an alligator devours its prey. So, stay away from it or say no to it while there is still time.
  • Get your Sleep: Sleep is a natural stress buster. It refreshes your mind and body and helps you think better. If you don’t get enough sleep at one go, try taking powernaps.
  • Physical Activity: Sweat out your stress!! Regular exercise keeps you physically fit and improves your reflex action thus equipping you better to handle stress.

There are many more ways to deal with stress, but remember “Self Realization is the key to stress management”.

21 Health Benefits of Exercise

runningBy M. A. GreenWe used to carry water, chop wood, hunt for game and till the soil. Now we open the faucet, turn up the thermostat, buy groceries and go to the restaurant. I’m confident most of us prefer the change yet we used to work our bodies hard when the sun was up and never had to go out of our way to get enough exercise. Now we sit, read, write, talk, push buttons and turn dials. If we don’t go well out of our way to get plenty of exercise, we weaken and languish.

We know in our heads that exercise plays a crucial role in our well-being yet many of us don’t act, from day to day, as if it were truly important. Physical exercise brings the body into balance and is one of the most important aspects of our lifestyles, competing with what we eat, drink and breathe for top honors. Still, only somewhere in the neighborhood of 37% of Americans exercise regularly and more than 72% are overweight.

So, just to clear the air and perhaps refresh our interest and appreciation for the subject, I’ve collected the following 21 widely recognized health benefits of exercise:

  1. Helps you feel better, generally, with more oxygen going to your brain and more endorphins circulating and providing the now famous “natural high”.
  2. Has helped institutionalized elderly people with Alzheimer’s feel better, sleep more soundly and take fewer medications.
  3. Reduces or eliminates a multitude of physical ailments.
  4. Improves nearly all medical conditions in varying degrees.
  5. Strengthens your immune system and promotes detoxification.
  6. Helps keep your blood pressure within normal limits, helping your heart pump stronger and slower.
  7. Reduces your risk of heart disease.
  8. Strengthens your lungs and respiratory system.
  9. Lowers your cholesterol levels. According to some health professionals, it does this more effectively than any other method known.
  10. Reduces headaches.
  11. Increases your metabolism.
  12. Increases your libido.
  13. Improves digestion.
  14. Improves your concentration, memory, alertness, and creativity.
  15. Reduces stress and depression.
  16. Reduces the risk of bone loss.
  17. Promotes your overall health.
  18. Improves sleep. There’s also evidence that lack of sleep causes increased appetite and a preference for high-calorie, high-carbohydrate foods.
  19. Can provide you with quiet or reflective time to meditate, stretch and relax, or enjoy the beauty of nature.
  20. Provides greater vitality, increased energy and longer life.
  21. Supports you in handling stress more calmly and resiliently.

These health benefits of exercise likely didn’t surprise you individually because they’re familiar to most of us, but maybe you found them striking as a group.
