Self Esteem in the Classroom

When I think about my children at school seven hours a day, it becomes apparent that teachers and the school environment play a major role in shaping our children. In specific, I wonder, how much is self esteem valued in our schools?

Self esteem, “The overall evaluation or appraisal of his or her own worth”, is an important building block to almost everything children do. When a child feels good about himself, he is more likely to put more effort into the task at hand, he is more likely to be kinder to others, and he will be more resilient of challenges. When a child feels liked by others it gives him a sense of belonging, or personal importance. When a child feels confident academically, he will feel achievement. Achievement breeds success.

Dr. Nathaniel Branden is a renowned lecturer and writer on self-esteem. He stresses that a strong disposition, or self-esteem is one who feels worthy of happiness. When one has the confidence to think, learn, choose and make appropriate decisions, self-esteem is acting out.

I believe that self-esteem is pertinent to happiness. Thus, I feel strongly that it should be valued and taught in our classrooms. It would be responsible for schools to teach our children how to love themselves and how to make themselves happy, without relying on outside things and people. Here a just a few ideas on some ways to blend self-esteem into our classrooms:

1. Give a child a “little buddy” so he can teach what he knows to someone younger.

2. Give a child the chance to earn the good grade, a lunch with his teacher or a longer recess.

3. Let a child fail at something. Give him a chance to learn from the opportunity.

4. Give a child verbal rewards for kind, generous, or thoughtful behavior.

5. Give a child a responsibility of which fulfilling it is a sure thing. Set her up to succeed.

We gain self-esteem through time and experiences. It is developed through a series of choices and decisions. When we are given a challenge, and we push ourselves to problem solve, get creative, feel the stress and work through the stress, our psychology changes. When the outcome is accomplishment and learning, we get a good dose of self-esteem.

What if a teacher could take a few minutes away from her curriculum to notice each child? We need the help of our school and teachers. Seven hours a day for 9 months is a large chunk of growth opportunity. We need all the support possible to guide our children into self-happiness and self-success. It takes a village of love to pave the road for a child’s happy independence.

How to Improve Your Self Esteem and Self Worth

My children constantly give me some great insights and this particular one came from my eldest, Sonnie. One day I notice he went overboard with the ketchup on his dinner. When I asked him why all the ketchup he said he didn’t like the taste of the food and all this ketchup takes the horrible taste away. Ketchup behaviours make life taste a little better whilst masking an underlying uncomfortable feeling or a feeling of emptiness.

Somebody asked me the other day, “Why do many people arrive in midlife depressed or out of sorts?”

My response was, because many of us arrive at midlife with a lot of unhappiness inside us without even realising it, or we know it but we don’t want to face it up to it. In an effort to cover up the pain we’re likely to develop some serious addictions in order to feel better.

We get into immediate remedies – for example medications, coffee, cigarettes, gossiping, alcohol, drugs, gambling and sex. You might become a workaholic. Or you may stuff yourself with food.

Many things we do bring us instant pleasure but not always happiness. Activities like these change how you feel fast, that’s their appeal, but they’re a bad idea. At best they will change how you feel for a few hours but when the hit wears off you feel more emptiness than you did before.

Of course there are countless positive ways of getting instant gratification as well. Something as simple as taking a shower after a long run, getting a massage, watching a funny movie and of course, shopping. We all should indulge in various forms of pleasure as they’re essential to our overall well being.

But remember pleasure is different from happiness.

Happiness is a feeling of fulfilment and deep joy, whereas pleasure is usually a form of instant gratification. This can be the challenge with excessive materialism. The more we feed it the hungrier it becomes. Similar to eating your favourite chocolate, once eaten you’re soon looking for one more bite or the next cake. The craving doesn’t subside. Contentment becomes elusive. So the craving for the next hit begins again along with the deep feelings of insecurity and anxiety.

Ketchup behaviours work in the short term but in the long term it does nothing more than reinforce an impoverish sense of self. Nothing external, no amount of cars, nice outfits, expensive holidays, glittery jewellery or big houses can fill the hole of a poor self-image and low self-worth.

Commonly this is known as having an ‘inferiority complex’

It’s a learnt belief that says you’re incomplete without the attainment of something outside of yourself. Self-worth comes from knowing who you are and what you stand for. When you have self-worth you feel good about yourself, you respect yourself. Self-worth means knowing you are perfect just the way you are and accepting yourself completely.

One of the reasons we fail to attract what we want is low self-worth. Self-worth is completely subjective and may or may not depend on your talents, skills and achievements. If you have a feeling that you are not worthy of having the life you want, then you will not manifest the life you want. Full stop!

It is not the skills, talents, and experience but a high sense of self-worth which manifests the life you want. So it is very important to improve your sense of self worth to attract the life you desire.

One of the main reasons for low self-worth is excessive self-criticism and the instant accepting of criticism from others. If self-criticism is your problem, stop looking at you through your own eyes and start looking through the eyes of the people who love you. Many a times it is true that because of your obsessive self-criticism you are blind to your positive qualities.

Sometimes it so happens that you start attracting the wealth, health, love and success that you strongly desire, but your poor self-worth will quickly sabotage any success you are having. You’ve probably seen this happen to people who are suspicious of their lovers because of their jealousy. At first, their intrinsic worthiness attracts the love of their life, but their low self-worth is not ready to accept this, and the worst part is they start suspecting it’s their loves fault. Then, the thing they desire (their lover) is pushed away. And so the pattern repeats itself.

At midlife we have to work hard at undoing the learnt erroneous scripts formed in the first part of our lifetime so that we can find our individual expression of wisdom and truth.

Here are four things you can do to increase your self worth:

1. Practice Forgiveness – Forgive yourself for past failures, mistakes and disappointments. Forgiveness releases the strong feelings of hate and bitterness that are like poisons inside you. Correct what you can and move on!

2. Get your needs met – Learn what you need from others and how you react to situations. Strive to consistently find ways to meet your needs and your self worth will go up!

3. Respect yourself – Stop behaviors that make you feel ashamed, guilty or unworthy. Eliminate all negative relationships with those who mistreat, disrespect and leave you feeling crap!

4. Build on your strengths – Seek out and build on your strengths that you have not used. Find ways of using more of your innate strengths. Knowing that you have these strengths and can do well with them is a great confidence and self worth builder.

Low self-worth is something we’ve learnt, so it’s also something we can unlearn. Make it a clear intention to love and accept yourself at all times. Working on your self worth is one of the best things you can ever do for yourself and before long you’ll notice you’ll rely less on ‘ketchup behaviours’ and every aspect of your life will start looking better and better.

I Want It Now!

Remember that little girl from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory that yelled I Want It Now!

I’ve always been a bit like that with, well, with just about everything. Patience is one thing I still need to work on. I was thinking about the “I want it now” thoughts we have with weight loss.

After a lifetime of dieting, fasting, pills, and other unhealthy things I thought would help me lose weight, I still went in to each diet thinking how quick can I lose this weight? I wanted it off Now!

I just knew life would get so much better after I lost the weight. I thought the weight was stopping me from being happy. The truth is I was stopping myself from being happy.

I started feeling happier and more content with my life when I decided to choose happiness. When I wake up each morning I think to myself I am going to be in a good mood today and happy. In the past when I woke up I would get up and wait for something to happen and let that decide my mood.

You can have happiness right now if you decide to choose that emotion for the day.

You can choose to be happy on the journey to better health and realize you didn’t gain all of the weight overnight and you won’t lose it overnight. You can yell, I want it now, but it won’t work with weight loss.

If you start today in hopes of quick weight loss, on a diet with rules that are making you miserable because you know it’s going to be so hard for you to wake up each morning and drink a gross tasting shake how long do you think you will stick to it? Not long! You will feel punished and deprived and so would I. Those diets would send me binging for days or longer.

Then the hunt would begin for the next diet that would promise me I could have quick weight loss and my life would perfect by purchasing their diet for a small price of $29.99 I could lose weight fast, look like I was 20 (even though I’m 48) and my life would be perfect.

I want to tell you what you really can have right now.

Right now you can choose to be happy and choose to focus on your health. It’s your choice. You can choose to start a new journey today. One that will treat you with love, compassion and forgiveness and give you better health from the inside out. You won’t lose the weight overnight. There will be bumps in the road, but you will learn from them and they will only make you stronger. All you have to do is take that first step and add in something positive today.

That’s all you have to do to get started. Have a healthy breakfast today and you have succeeded or go for a walk or tell yourself you are beautiful. It doesn’t matter what you do, just do 1 positive thing today.

Isn’t it sad that it feels wrong if we aren’t taking things from ourselves and punishing ourselves. We deserve so much more than that!

Please believe in yourself and believe you deserve to be healthy and happy because you do.

I Believe in you and I Believe you can do this! You just need to believe it too!

What Does Self Esteem Mean to You?

Do you have high self esteem or low self esteem? Answering this question honesty can have a profound impact on your life.

But why does it matter so much?

Because self esteem is the ability to love yourself completely just the way you are. No exceptions. No rules. And no possible way of every turning back.

When you truly love and accept yourself for who you are on the inside it will start to affect your outside world in ways you probably can’t even imagine right now.

But give it time and you will see a difference, a huge difference, not just emotionally but physically and mentally as well.

Have you ever taken the time to ask yourself the question, what is self esteem? We all know that self esteem is an internal job but it effects so much of our external world too.

Why?

Because true change happens within not without as the great spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle says.

However, in order to truly love yourself just as you are right NOW you MUST accept everything about yourself.

Yes everything! Your weight. Your looks. Your attitude. Your job. Your spouse. Your car. Your financial situation. Your emotional situation. Your kids.

I’m talking everything. Now you don’t have to like it all, at least not yet anyways, you just have to accept it for how and what it is right NOW.

So if there’s something you just can’t, don’t or won’t accept YOU must change it then. Because that is what self esteem is – total acceptance of one’s self.

Loving yourself and everything about you is the first step towards self esteem building and living a more richer, rewarding, fulfilling life.

DO what needs to be done. Say “I love and accept myself”, out loud or at least to yourself 100 times a day.

BE the change you want to see in the world. Create real joy for yourself. You are worth the effort, you know. And also please know that no one else can or will do it for you. You must accept the responsible to change. Then you must act.

And remember you must BE before you can DO and you must DO before you can HAVE.

Start today by loving yourself for all that you are and all that you have and all that’s yet to come. Take the time to figure out what self esteem is to you.

Self Acceptance – 7 Underground Secrets to Help You Achieve This

2. There is something about you that sets you apart. Decide to discover what that thing is. The thing you dislike most about yourself may be the thing others see as a strength in your character.
3. Do not judge yourself. This once was a luxury and a method of pretending self acceptance. It’s really a protection tactic. If you judge yourself first, no one can hurt you with their opinion.
4. Accept the truth – you are not perfect. No one is and that’s okay.
5. Be real. There is no fake it till you make it in self acceptance. You just do it.
6. You will forget that you like yourself sometimes. Remind yourself when this happens, “I messed up and it’s okay.”
7. Practice confidence. Hold your head up a little higher and keep your back a little straighter. Do this until it comes naturally for you.

Self acceptance looks different on different people so don’t expect to look like another person who is practicing self acceptance too. Be you, be satisfied, and enjoy life.

What You Think of Me is Absolutely None of My Business

IT MIGHT sound rather obvious, but we can’t affect the thinking of other people. In fact, you might even say,

Tell me something we don’t already know, and don’t waste my time with such obvious statements of fact!

But, there’s a practical difference between knowing this truth and really living it.

This truth of not being able to overtly influence others’ perceptions of us is probably one of the most powerfully empowering concepts known to human experience. There’s a level of true mature acceptance involved in really taking hold of this.

‘What you think of me’:

  • Messes with my mind if I dwell upon it i.e. what I think you’re thinking. Then my perception of you and our interaction is slanted toward a reality that cannot, in fact, be real–it has “me” all over it, not “us” plus the situational context;
  • Is based only on what you see–a separate reality to mine. No matter how much I try I cannot see as you see;
  • May impact upon me and will cause me to reflect upon our interactions, and I can’t help that. How I reflect and the conclusions and attributions I draw from my reflections are my responsibility entirely;
  • Cannot and should not ever become a concern of mine unless it becomes an issue for you to broach with me–then I need to work with you toward a win/win outcome if that’s at all possible;
  • Tells me, if I’m intuitive, what I (and only I) can do to improve or maintain things between us. If I’m ‘picking up’ anything intuitively, I’ll check with you first to ensure there is a truth basis to it;
  • Is important, but only to the extent that it helps us to just be ourselves together.

Mind games are no fun, not for the person suffering them or for the persons impacted on the other side of things.

We are best to discipline ourselves and hold ourselves to account, reacting to things only of pure fact. We’ll hence be amazed at what is not there!

3 Common Myth About Self-Esteem

Myth #1: Self-esteem depends on external factors

“If only I were successful, rich, famous, beautiful, slim, fit… than I would have high self-esteem,” reflects a common and, it turns out, false idea. Wealth and a solid self-esteem may coincide, but there is only a tenuous link between them. Self-esteem that is based on external conditions is prone to crumble when those conditions subside. In fact, you can point to people who manifest any or even all of the factors mentioned above and you will nonetheless find a considerable amount of people with low self-esteem among them. A long-term, healthy self-esteem should not be conditional and depend on external factors. Conditional self-esteem is like paying with Monopoly money. One day you’ll be busted.

Myth #2: Self-esteem is the opinion we have of ourselves

“Change the way you think about yourself and you change your self-esteem.” That motto seems to be the governing rule of most of the books about self-esteem. Although partly true there is more to it than meets the eye. The findings of depth psychology show that there are underlying, unconscious motives that are able to move us in mysterious ways, thus damaging our self-esteem. But those motives have nothing to do with what we think about ourselves. If we don’t make ourselves conscious of them and alter them, working with thoughts and beliefs will be fruitless and undermined.

Myth #3: Healing low self-esteem necessitates digging in the past

“To understand the root of your problems you have to investigate the past.” This is probably the most common myth relating to self-esteem It stems from the classical setting of Sigmund Freud, according to which you have to lie down and talk ( and talk and talk) about your past. The idea behind it is that once you know what happened in your past, you are cured. That myth is fostered by popular culture. Just think of the movies by Alfred Hitchcock or Woody Allen: After painfully scrutinizing her life, all of a sudden, the heroine realizes why she is afraid of thunderstorms and the color green, curing her miraculously of that dreadful diarrhea due to eating cucumber amidst severe weather.

Sadly, for the loss of time (Woody Allen spent 30 years undergoing psychoanalysis. Ask him, if he feels any better.) and money, under�standing the past only rarely helps to heal a damaged self-esteem. Besides factors that are constitutional, like temperament or a proneness to anxiety, it is the specific lessons we draw from an experiences of the past that are of crucial importance. If you want to overcome low self-esteem, you have to tackle those inhibiting conclusions and their ensuing consequences.

She Stole My Idea and I Don’t Know What to Do

Sometimes ideas come to me at the strangest times, like when I’m taking a shower, at 2 am when I can’t sleep, or when I’m driving my car. But when a great idea comes along you know it right away, right?

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago. As I was driving my car, a light bulb went off. I suddenly thought of a terrific idea to move a struggling project forward. I was certain that this new innovative approach to a stale project would have a positive impact on the project as well as my department and I couldn’t wait to share it with one of my co-workers.

The next day I met my colleague for lunch and I was bubbling over with enthusiasm as I told her my idea. She was equally excited and validated my strategy and creativity. I couldn’t wait to present this at our next senior staff meeting later in the week.

In the senior staff meeting, we made our way through the agenda and the troubled project became the focus of our discussion. I was already thinking about the best way to present my idea when my colleague addressed the senior team with a potential solution; MY SOLUTION! She stole my idea!

My face immediately flushed and I could feel my heart rate accelerate. I didn’t know what to say or do.

This a theoretical situation but my question to you is this: What should I do in this situation?
