How to Use Online Learning as a Self Improvement Tool

Any kind of technology can be a two-pronged weapon – it has its share of advantages and adverse consequences based on how we use it. And so it is with the Internet and the online world; while we see and hear of crimes being perpetrated using the cloak of anonymity offered by this tool of communication and interaction, one area where the Internet has really come through for the betterment of mankind is online education. Being able to learn with just a computer and an Internet connection is a boon to millions of people across the world who are limited by time and place in their pursuit of education. While online learning has always been respected and harnessed as a means to gain knowledge, not many people are aware that it can also contribute as a tool for self improvement because it:

  • Encourages learning at any age: We generally tend to associate learning and education with childhood and school. But with the advent of online learning, age no longer becomes a barrier to education. When you take the initiative to learn at any age, you know that online education is helping you improve yourself because you’re exercising your brain cells and providing yourself with a challenge.
  • Necessitates discipline and dedication: When you’re juggling a job, family and a degree all at once, you know that you need to be disciplined to stay the course and balance all these activities without neglecting any of them. You’re forced to learn how to manage your time and dedicate your attention to each of these tasks as and when they need them. Unless you’re able to step up to the bar and exceed your own expectations, you’re going to end up becoming frustrated and not doing justice to any of your responsibilities.
  • Gives you initiative: When you learn online, you don’t have the luxury of relying on fellow students or your teachers to be around all the time. This means that you must know how to do your own research and be able to learn on your own without expecting others to help you along the way. Online learning makes you a better and more effective learner because you know how to achieve results in the short time that is available to you. Besides, you study because you want to, not because you’re forced to do so as happens with school.
  • Offers a sense of achievement: When you succeed in your online learning endeavor, you gain a sense of achievement and this motivates and encourages you to continue to set higher targets for yourself. You feel good about yourself and know that you can push yourself to achieve more. Online learning helps improve your perception of yourself and your capabilities.

A Best Friend – the Greatest Self Improvement Tool

Coffee BreakBy Irene Conlan -

One of life’s greatest gifts is the gift of friendship. Most of us have many acquaintances and, if we are lucky (although luck has little to do with it) we have at least one good friend. If you have more that one true friend you are rich, indeed.

Most of us, when we were growing up, had a “best friend?”  Best friends did everything together and entrusted each other with their craziest ideas, wildest dreams, and deepest secrets. When we got old enough to have a “romantic” girlfriend/boyfriend our interests changed but we still wanted and needed our “best friend.”

We still do.

There is no better self improvement tool than a good friend.  A good friend is  someone you trust and enjoy who is able to help you put your thoughts back on track when you get derailed, sit with you when you are grieving and laugh with you every chance they get. A good friend knows which buttons to push and not push and likes you despite these buttons. .  A good friend does not just hear but truly listens and understands what you are saying, and just by mirroring you over time, helps take the rough edges off your personality

No matter what your age you need someone that you can trust to tell you the truth, to stick with you in the hard times and rejoice with you in the good times. Our spouse may be a “best friend” but we still need someone else in our lives, someone we know we can turn to and who can rely on us to be there for them as well. In my work with the grieving I work with  many whose spouse has died and they have absolutely no one to lean on. They feel lost and alone, often without identity. A “best friend” can help lighten the load better than anyone else.

Today’s videos are about friendship. As you listen to Straight No Chaser sing “Stand By Me”, pay attention to the words. (The words are below). As you listen,  reflect on your own life and your friendships. Who would stand by you? Who would you stand by?  It’s never too late to begin to form a real friendship and each of us is worthy of a friend.

Stand By Me
By John Lennon

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we see
No I won’t be afraid
No I won’t be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darling, darling stand by me
Oh, now, now, stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
And the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won’t cry, I won’t cry
No I won’t shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

Whenever you’re in trouble won’t you stand by me
Oh, now, now, stand by me
Oh, stand by me, stand by me, stand by me
