Give me the steps to inner peace in the grocery line

grocery lineIn the “Spiritual Life” section of Allison Maslan’s Blastation (TM) she makes a statement that burns in my mind. She states:

It’s one thing to find balance in a state of meditation or at the local ashram, but give me the steps to inner peace in the grocery line or while paying the bills. How do we find the smoothest route through life’s tumultuous storms?

I haven’t done the exercises connected with this lesson yet – I wanted to wrestle with this statement for a while first and it seems a perfect statement to blog about so you can join me in the wrestling match.

This is where the rubber meets the road, isn’t it? Some of the questions this statement evokes are

  • Do I walk my talk?
  • Do those around me know what I believe by watching my behavior?
  • Do I know what I believe?
  • Do I give “lip service” to Spirit (God, Creator, a Higher Power, the Divine) or is what I believe a powerful driving force in my life?
  • Do I take care of the spiritual part of me as well as I care for my physical part?
  • Does my belief system give me joy in the grocery line as well as in a place of worship or in deep meditation?
  • What/Who do I turn to in times of trouble?
  • Do I have a feeling of “well-being” regardless of what is happening around me?
  • Am I aware of “Spirit within me?” Do I go there for advice and help or do I apply the steps of problem solving according to the scientific method? Which works the best?

Questions just keep coming, but this is enough to deal with right now.

It would be so easy just to accept someone’s total package of beliefs without examining it first but it’s a decision that needs to be made at a soul level. And it is your choice. You are the one who has to listen to your soul’s longings and search out a path that feeds and satisfies these longings.  Sometimes you have to examine various paths to know if they’re right for you and sometimes you come to a fork in the path and have to make a decision about which one to take next.. Sometimes we are afraid to follow our heart and choose a way that feeds us and gives us joy – it is easier not to make waves and not to take the risk.

If what you believe gives you peace and fills you with joy and if your beliefs show up in the line in the grocery store, or the unemployment line or the marching line of the military, then you know you are on the right one. If your belief system has no relevance to your daily life at home, in the office, in the field, in the car, on the stage, in the classroom or wherever, it’s time to take a look within and determine if you are on the right spiritual path or if you’re on a path at all.

It is so important to be true to who you are and each of us is a unique individual unlike anyone else on the planet. It may be time to examine your life and your belief system and make some decisions about where you are going spiritually. Thee’s no better time  than now.

Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Have you examined yours?

The End of the Year Review

check boxThose of of you who own your own business are getting your financials together for doing an end of the year review and closing out the books for 2009. It’s important that you know the cost of doing business, where the problems are, the year-to-year growth, the revenue drains, etc. You want to know the strengths and weaknesses of you business so you can be more profitable in the new fiscal year.

But what about the business of living? Have you ever done a year end review? Perhaps it’s time you did.

We are physical, spiritual, emotional, intelligent beings so let’s take a look at  each of those components:

Physical

  • When did you have a physical exam?
  • Do you get enough sleep?
  • Do you eat a relatively nutritious diet or do you rely on fast food and junk food most of the time?

  • Are you aware of internal guidance?
  • Do you pray regularly
  • Do you know how to manage your energy?
  • Do you know what you believe about God, life, the afterlife, etc  or are you at least working on it?  Are these  your beliefs or what you were told you had to believe?

What do you need to do in 2010 to enhance your spiritual life?

Emotional

  • On a scale of 1 – 10 with 10 being the happiest, how happy are you?
  • If you ranked below five, what would it take to bring you up above five on the happiness scale?
  • Do you have any major issues with anger or rage, sadness, depression, loneliness, forgiveness, etc?
  • Can  you generally make a decision about the way you want to feel?

  • Do you have boundaries? Do they work for you are do you need to do some boundary revision?
  • Do you have habits you wish to change? e.g. smoking, procrastinating, nail biting, etc. (Notice that it’s YOU who wishes to change not because someone else told you to change)
  • Do you wake up most days with a smile or do you wake up dreading the day?

What one thing can you work on in 2010 that would make your life happier?

Intelligence

  • What do you do on a regular basis to nourish your mind? e.g., read, crossword puzzles, art, etc.
  • Do you want to continue learning as much as you can?
  • How’s you memory and concentration?
  • Would you like to increase your IQ?

Do you need to do anything in 2010 to improve your intelligence, concentration or memory?

Overall

  • Does your life have passion and purpose?
  • Are you satisfied with  your life – even though you may like to tweak some things here and there?
  • Do you have a way to “give back” or “pay it forward?”

You could add many more questions to this assessment and if you need to do that go ahead. This is meant only to stimulate thinking about what you want to do and be. It helps draw the map for your journey  through life or build some detours to get you back on track. 2010 seems like the perfect time to do that.

Meditation Without the Myth

By Persephone Arbour -

“All of life is a meditation, most of it unintentional.” Joseph Campbell

Are you sitting comfortably? When I remember these words I laugh out loud. It tickles that place within me that judges myself for not being the perfect meditator. I do take meditation seriously, as a deep, fulfilling experience – which it undoubtedly is. However, Campbell’s quotation helped me see that any reflection or deep thinking can be a moment of meditation – if I bring my consciousness there and make it so. [Read more...]

On Choosing Your Own Spiritual Path

By Alfred Willowhawk

Introduction

” What path is right for me?”, is a question that each seeker asks at least once in their lives. As children, most individuals follow the pathways of their parents. Even if a parent has no particular spiritual path, the child is influenced by their parent. This is almost genetic as, regardless of a path, the mother, to the child, is the goddess. As one grows older and begins to think for themselves, they begin to feel a desire to either embrace or reject their parental suggestions. This includes the chosen spiritual path of the individual.
