Every Day Should Be Thanksgiving

By Linda Hancock

Things have changed in the last few days!

The stores have put away their summer stock and are now decorated in fall’s traditional orange and brown. We see paper turkeys and wicker table centers representing the horn of plenty. Greeting cards offer best wishes mixed with thoughts of gratefulness for the season. Soon church altars will be laden with fruit, vegetables and other produce that represent completion of the growing season.

It’s Thanksgiving!

Often I think about stories of the original Pilgrims, dressed in their modest habits. They immigrated to this country and had to make a new start without all the modern conveniences we enjoy.

Our elementary school history books recount tales of bravery and tenacity. With limited tools, lack of social support and little chance of escape, the pioneers cleared land and prepared it for a crop. There weren’t any houses to purchase, so they had to build their own, with materials found in the environment.

There was no Welcome Wagon, electricity or plumbing to make things easy. Car dealerships were unheard of – vehicles consisted of a cart pulled by an animal.

The pilgrims couldn’t go to the mall to shop when they were bored or needed goods. They made their own clothing – and their own fun. It’s probably just as well because there wasn’t much money. In fact, commerce usually involved trade. A beaver pelt might be exchanged for groceries or chickens for bullets.

No spa! A bath might be in the cold water at the river. No ordering in for supper – unless you count occurrences when children brought home a bucket of berries which they had picked. No health care! Babies were delivered at home – by whoever was present! No divorce! There was no place to go and no way to survive on your own. No funeral packages! When someone died, – you dug a grave.

If the weather didn’t cooperate – there was no recourse. No crop insurance program or home protection packages.

It must have been scary – and lonely – and exhausting.

No wonder they were ready to celebrate when the work was done and there was a harvest to treasure.

Often I hear individuals who complain that they are tired, hungry or sick. How different our lives are from the pioneers. We merely take a sick day, stop at a walk-in Clinic to see the doctor and pick up food at a drive-through on our way home to bed.

Seems to me that we have plenty to be thankful for but need to remember to think about what we have rather than what we don’t have.

I hope that this Thanksgiving Day is more than merely a break from your regular activities. It should be a time to develop and enjoy an attitude of gratitude.

5 Healthy Thanksgiving Eating Tips to Keep Your Healthy Weight Loss on Track

By Cari Corbet-Owen -

Healthy Thanksgiving Eating tip no. 1

Legalize the turkey, the stuffing, the cranberry sauce and everything else that goes with thanksgiving eating. The moment you tell yourself that any part of the meal is ‘forbidden’ or ‘bad for you’ it grows psychological hooks. It’s almost as if ‘making it bad’ makes it grows fingers that insist you eat it. But when you tell yourself it is perfectly OK to eat some, you remove the ‘hooks.’

It allows you to stay relaxed instead of tense around the table. And when you eat with en-joy-ment rather than with guilt, your digestion works better because of the way your body works when you’re feeling stressed out.

Thanksgiving tip no. 2

Don’t tell yourself and everyone else you meet that thanksgiving is a eating nightmare. It’s not difficult once you know how to take it from being a mental nightmare and to change it into a fantastic eating experience for yourself.

Before reaching to take a single morsel of food, just sit and visually take in all the food. Do you like it’s colours, it’s shapes? Notice what is happening in your mouth – enjoy the sensations of saliva forming, remind yourself that this is the way your body prepares to digest your food.

Healthy Thanksgiving Eating tip no. 3

Don’t automatically pile your plate. What looks the absolute yummiest to you? If you could choose only two items, which would they be and why? How do you anticipate they would taste?

On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being: absolutely awful; 5 being: ok and 10 being: orgasmically delicious, where would these two foods rate? Now dish up for yourself less than you think you’d really like to eat. Remind yourself you can always go back for seconds.

Eating tip no. 4

Don’t rush starting to eat, tell yourself you are relaxed around this plate of food and that you’re going to enjoy every morsel. Then do just that. Really chew your food, focus on how much you really do like the actual flavours and are they different than what you expected?

Be curious. Try different food combinations together – which do you like best?

Thanksgiving eating tip no. 5

Don’t automatically head for seconds. Enjoy a bit of conversation first. Take your time about heading back. Allow what you’ve eaten to reach your tummy and register how much more (if any) you really need.

If you’d really like more but you already know you’ve eaten enough for your tummy, dish up another plate, cover and refrigerate it for another time. Remember that food doesn’t taste as delicious when we’re full.

The Meaning of Thanksgiving

By Gary Wonning -

It seems the true story of Thanksgiving is a lot different than the story  most of us are taught in school. We are taught that the hapless Pilgrims arrived on Plymouth Rock quite by accident and by luck. Bringing with them syphilis and gonorrhea, environmental destruction, racism, and sexism,  they had no clue as to how they were going to survive.

No doubt the Indians were a big help that first cold ,long winter, without their help the Pilgrims would have no doubt perished! The Pilgrims were taught how to grow food in this new land, how to hunt and fish and even make popcorn, thus providing a source of income for OrvilleReddenbacher many generations down the road!

Clearing the way for the first Thanksgiving, the killing and cleaning and dressing of wild animals, such as turkeys was taught. Thus the “first” Thanksgiving was prepared to give thanks for the bountiful harvest. That is the “true story taught to children in most schools, however, that is not all that happened!

William Bradford, the original Governor of the colony writes as to what actually happened. This was hundreds of years ago, there were no turnpikes, Wal-Marts, large grocery stores, or other conveniences we have today, not even heat in their homes.

When the Pilgrims arrived, it was barren and cold, there was disease, pestilence, and many hardships. It was first decided to set up a form of socialism, everyone was given a plot of land and whatever was produced would go into a common granary. Based on fairness and great compassion you were to put in what you had and take out only what you needed. The fruits of everyone’s labor would be enjoyed by all. Marx and Obama would be proud!!

Great idea, however , human nature soon reared it’s ugly head! There were slackers amongst the Pilgrims, who would have thunk it!

It didn’t take them long to realize they didn’t have to do anything in order to get what they wanted from the common store! Other people were carrying the weight, and doing all the work.

It didn’t take long for Governor Bradford to realize that this wasn’t going to work. Resentment was quickly growing against the slackers. Not only were they not producing, they were taking more than they needed. They felt entitled, after all, they were just going by the rules, there wasn’t any rule stating they had to do anything.

Among the problems , the people weren’t allowed to specialize, some weren’t good at farming, all they could do was clean up manure, others were able to manage and grow crops by using the manure to fertilize the land, some even had business skills whereby they could run a mercantile store or other business.

Bradford soon realized this wasn’t working, and changed his policy, he gave everyone a plot of land and told them to do with it what they wanted, specifying that they keep whatever they produced. It was decided that whatever surplus there was, they could sell. After that the Pilgrims began to prosper and thus began sharing their “wealth ” with the Indians. In turn the Indians shared their knowledge with the Pilgrims, kind of a joint exchange of ideas that only capitalism, free markets, and free enterprise can supply.

The true lesson of Thanksgiving is, give thanks to God, thanks to God for showing the Pilgrims how to survive and prosper in this new barren, unknown land, not by giving free handouts to others, but allowing each person to prosper by providing the opportunity to excel with whatever talents and abilities one  has.

The Thanksgiving Secret

By Judy Davis -

What are you grateful for? Have you ever been asked that question?

The month of November is a time when we naturally think about all that we are thankful for in our lives. I know that we have a tradition on Thanksgiving Day to go around the table and tell everyone what we are grateful for in our lives, and for some of us, it is a difficult task.

Being grateful is so different from what many of us are exposed to every day. The media focuses on what is wrong in the world, which creates feelings of sadness and despair. Their programming highlights what isn’t working. On the contrary, living in a state of gratitude changes how we feel, and cultivates happiness. Focusing on what is positive and being thankful for it, melts away stress and frustration.

Gratitude is a positive emotion that plays a big part in each of our lives. Being grateful is about taking the time to be appreciative and thankful for all that is happening. As we create change, make choices and move forward, we are presented with challenges and lessons that impact us in a major way. Learning to focus on what we are grateful for awakens a positive energy that will transcend throughout your life, and help you to find joy in any given moment.

One way to kindle gratitude is to pay attention to what’s happening in our everyday lives. Too often we spend time thinking about what may have been, or what might happen, and we forget to live in the moment. By taking the time to recognize and be grateful for what is happening now, we shift our thoughts to all that is right and perfect.

So the next time you find yourself frustrated, under a lot of stress, or on the spot at Thanksgiving dinner, take a moment and reflect on something positive in your life. Spend the day noticing and being thankful for what occurs in your life. You may be surprised what you begin to attract, and how great you feel!

ReclaimU is having a “Thank-fest”. In gratitude for all of you who are in our circle we are giving away 5 three month memberships to the Phoenix Center. Visit http://www.ReclaimU.com/thankfest.html to tell what you are grateful for and enter the contest – Then tell a friend!

For the Thanksgiving Season

By Irene Conlan -

We’ll suspend our meditation series for a while as we get ready for the holidays. Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away and being aware of all we have to be thankful for is a  powerful key to self improvement and the resulting happiness. Be Thankful, be grateful, bask in appreciation of all we have.

The new video is a home-made tribute to a family and to appreciating life. I found it very moving and I hope you do as well. It shows talent and heart.

Thank you, Jonah Levy for sharing your family and your love of life with us.

Enjoy.
