Gradual Self Improvement and Spiritual Growth

By Steven C Maglecic -

Media and advertising have accustomed people to believe that change can happen quickly for everyone. People experience constant stimuli which convince them that pills, medicines, CDs, contraptions and other devices can radically change their life in a matter of days or weeks. Unfortunately, this is not the case for most. No weight loss transformation is ever fully achieved in a week’s time, no profession taught in a month, and no spiritual change made overnight. Anything worth doing with the intent to produce radical change should be expected to happen gradually, over time, with significant dedication and effort. This should not be a source of frustration for those attempting change, but rather a realistic outlook at the journey they are embarking on.

Inner strength and perseverance are two key aspects to have when deciding if one is ready to begin a self improvement transformation. Dedication, hard work and sweat are a necessity and without a willingness to put forth this effort, one may ultimately set themselves up for failure. Time and energy must be input in order to achieve results and possibly financial resources as well. Self improvement goals must first be set and rigorously adhered to during the improvement phase. During spiritual growth processes, one must be fully willing to open their heart and mind to new possibilities and ideas. There are a large number of religious teachings in the world today, and the first step for many is likely to be selecting which they feel most comfortable with. This process in itself may prove a large challenge, and significant time and energy may be dedicated to this stage. For others, the decision to further develop an existing spiritual mindset may begin with a focusing process to determine exactly what the desired outcome is.

Self improvement and spiritual growth processes both entail individual change. All change processes progress through three major phases, during which one’s diligence and dedication is sure to be tested. In the first phase, preparing for change, one must assess the path and develop a strategy. This may entail gathering a team of supportive people, or even others who attempt to follow the same path. The second step is to manage the change, including developing the change management plans and taking action to implement those plans. Lastly in the change process, one must reinforce the change to prevent slipping back to old ways. This includes collecting and analyzing any relevant feedback and implementing corrective actions to prevent fall-back. Lastly, it is crucial to fully celebrate the change that has occurred and the success of the journey.

As demonstrated, any change to improve oneself or grow spiritually is a gradual process. Change takes energy, strategy, effort and a large amount of time. Media and advertising have attempted to convince people over the years that change occurs quickly, which is simply not the case. Anything worth permanently changing is worth doing diligently and well. Extensive efforts must be taken to ensure the self improvement or spiritually growths are permanent and lasting.
