We’re slowly approaching the third decade of the twenty-first century and thanks to the wonders of modern technology most of us have become extremely out of touch with our bodies and any objective sense of physical well-being. In the last hundred years, the total amount of time that people used to spend outdoors has significantly decreased, with office and factory-based jobs mostly achieving prominence over any professional activity that would require you to be located outside.
That, coupled with the generally hectic lifestyle most of us are forced to accommodate to if we want to progress in our careers, has begun to leave some serious consequences concerning the health of both our bodies and our spirits.
To combat this, first you have to become aware of the source of the problem, and then come up with some strategies in order to overcome it and give your body what it truly needs. Then and only then will you begin the healing process of both spirit and body. Today, I’m going to be talking about some of the most basic points on using your body to keep your spirit healthy.
You probably already knew that this one was going to be on the list, therefore it’s the perfect place to start. A lot of fitness enthusiasts talk about diet and nutrition as being a very important step in losing weight and gaining muscle, but this is often on a very superficial level. Why? Because the goal is pretty superficial, as well. Realistically, most people just want to look good on the outside, and will take as many shortcuts as possible in order to achieve just that.
If you truly want to improve your health, you’re going to want to take a more holistic approach to diet. So it’s not just about “cutting carbs and upping your protein”; it’s about learning about what you eat, doing research about the food that you put into your body and working out what it really needs. A well thought out diet should never feel very unpleasant; instead, you should feel like you’re finally getting all the nutrients that your body has been craving for ages.
Another very important point. It’s simply appalling to me how many people out there don’t drink water at all. Instead, they replace it with tons of coffee, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages that slowly but surely poison their bodies and that can potentially trigger a dormant health condition somewhere down the road. It’s absolutely essential to drink a lot of water every day, as your body needs it for virtually every process going on in your organism.
A recent Harvard study showed that more than half of American children are constantly dehydrated due to continuously substituting water for sweetened soft drinks, or even worse, energy drinks. Symptoms of dehydration can be numerous, some of them being fatigue, dizziness, mood swings, and even bad breath. And it can all be avoided simply be taking a few sips of water every hour. I guarantee that you’ll feel a lot better after a few days of such a practice, so make sure to incorporate it into your everyday routine.
Physical Activity & the Great Outdoors
Finally, the last cornerstone in the road to healing your body and spirit is to be aware of your body’s daily needs for exercise and being outside. Realistically, our current lifestyle of being cooped up in an office half a day, and sitting in front of a TV set the other half is very unnatural from an evolutionary perspective.
It’s been less than 100 years since humans first started living like this, and before that homes were nothing more than a shelter for most people, to protect them from the elements when they’re not working in a field or hunting for game.
The problem is that 100 years is an infinitely short period of time for evolution, so we’re not nearly as adapted to this kind of lifestyle as we think we are. Sunlight, fresh air and just the general feeling of not being cooped up between four walls is something we all need, whether we’re aware of it or not, and giving our bodies some outside time every day can do wonders for your bodily and spiritual health.
