Self-improvement starts with self-understanding. If you feel stuck in life and haven’t been making the kind of consistent, positive progress towards your goals that you envisioned for yourself, it’s time to pause and take stock of things. The most effective way to do this is to perform a personal evaluation by asking yourself a series of simple yet powerful questions. By answering these questions, you will begin to understand how to get what you want, how to deal with challenges in your path and, ultimately, how to become a better person.
There are several key steps in an effective personal evaluation. The questions you need to ask yourself can be grouped into eight loose categories: evaluation, vision, purpose, commitment, blocks to success, quantum thinking, actions and support.
Begin with the evaluation stage. Here, you will ask yourself a series of introspective questions designed to help you understand what is really important to you in life, why success is important to you, and what success means to you. During the evaluation stage, you will also identify the values that are most important to you – something that will go on to shape everything action you will take as you build towards greater personal success.
After you have identified your key values, the next step is to shape those values into a vision of success. Here, you will take stock of what it is you want to get out of life. Fundamental questions at this stage include things like “What gives you a sense of freedom?” and “If you could have anything in life, what would it be?” These queries are vital tools for self-improvement and self-understanding, yet few people know how to ask them or apply the answers they yield.
Then, you will proceed to examine your purpose in life through the values you’ve identified. It is important to know not only what you stand to gain by going after what you want, but also what you stand to lose if you don’t take positive action.
Committing to a life-changing course of action is where most people fail. However, effective life coaching takes the fear out of committing to improving your life and taking positive steps to enact change.
Of course, you will face challenges along the way. If changing your life and making your deepest desires and wildest dreams a reality were easy, you would have done it already. Recognizing and preventing problem behaviors, such as withholding truth from yourself and compromising your integrity, are essential to staying the course and overcoming challenges that originate from within yourself.
In the quantum thinking stage, you will open yourself up to new goals, new values and new points of view that are only possible thanks to your renewed and invigorated outlook. The key question you will ask yourself at this point is, “What value could you start to enjoy in your life that you currently lack?”
Once you have come this far in your personal evaluation, you will be ready to take action. It is important to remember that there are two types of actions you need to take to change your life: positive actions that further your goals, and evasive actions that help you avoid the things that are holding you back.
Finally, you will be coached in support strategies. Your life coach will be an excellent source of support, but it shouldn’t be your only one. You need to learn where else you can turn when you need help, guidance and reassurance.
The personal evaluation approach helps you understand your desires, dreams and goals with crystal clarity. If you want to become more successful but you’re finding you don’t have the answers, it’s almost certainly a matter of not having asked the right questions.
