Creativity is one of the main things that separates humans from nearly all other species. Yes, there is evidence of creativity in the animal kingdom but it is comparatively rare. So, if humans all have it why don’t we use it more often? For many people, their jobs can be replaced by robots and involve very few opportunities for creative thought, and when they get off work, they are tired and just want to vegetate in front of the TV.
Creativity in action
What if, instead of spending 30 hours a week passively watching the flat panel they managed to an hour a day during the week and four hours on the weekend? What would that look like? Drawing, painting, sculpting, composing music, writing, inventing, creating video games, etc. What works for some may not be suitable for others, but I believe that everyone can find something that fits them, and I’ll bet that it will be more fun than TV.
A side hustle
After a while, they will get good at whatever it is that they are doing and will produce a saleable product that could produce a second source of income. That could be very useful when that robot replaces their day job. Now they have a vehicle to transport themselves to a new and richer career.
Just knowing that “I can do other things besides my job” will give them more confidence in everything they do, so they will be happier and more productive individuals. Why don’t we see a government initiative to get people to be more creative? Because the big money people who actually run this country want docile programmed consumers to buy their products and TV helps them to sell.
Exercising my creativity
I’m 84, and I can’t do all the things I used to be able to, but I now have more experience and my brain still works. so why not write and share some of the things that I have learned? While I love music, I am useless at playing or composing so I have to look elsewhere to exercise my creativity.
The same goes for drawing and painting. However, I do have a talent for designing things and have some of my inventions patented. You may have to invest some time trying different areas before you find your niche, but I assure you, that lack of talent in one area does not mean you aren’t creative. Your search will be worth it!
Computer software presents an entirely new field for people to create something. The richest man on earth, Elon Musk got his start by writing a software program that allowed anyone to play a computer game. He sold that software to become a millionaire, at a very early age. He went on to create many companies and trillions of dollars of wealth for his investors, and it started with a kid writing code.
What can you create?
What have you done lately to create something, anything that did not exist before you were born? Having children doesn’t count for this exercise, as any animal can manage to reproduce itself. You are human and we expect slightly more from you. There are many who are quite happy if you can do anything no matter how simple and repetitive as long as you can make a buck and use it as a downpayment on something that generates bank debt, I believe that you are better than that, and with patience and practice, you can learn to create something truly wonderful. Plus your creation may stimulate an idea in another’s mind and they may expand your idea to even greater heights. That is how we have evolved more in the last hundred years than in the million that preceded it.
If you have Netflix you might want to watch the documentary, “The Creative Brain.” Below is a TED talk about learning creativity. Do the schools teach it?
