Every day when you go to work, you are expected to give your best effort in completing the tasks assigned. If you clock off with a genuine feeling that you performed to your best and had a productive day, that’s all that can be asked of you. Sometimes, though, your best intentions at being productive can be hampered by circumstances which aren’t your fault. And the question arises, “Does a clean office boost productivity?”

If you work in an environment that’s littered and generally unsanitary, you share some of the responsibility. But so do your colleagues and superiors. We wouldn’t allow our homes to become scandalously untidy, so we shouldn’t let our workplaces descend into a trashy condition either.

Keeping the workplace tidy

Keeping your workplace tidy is about more than just maintaining a positive impression of the setting.

The removal of clutter allows you to be more focused on your work, as you won’t be distracted by discarded coffee cups or stationery piles. Speaking of stationery, it’s well worth getting into the habit of maintaining a neat filing system, with thousands of hours wasted each year in searching for documents that aren’t properly stored away. Clean offices will also be free of pungent smells from toilets, garbage and dusty air vents. These can all lead to illnesses occurring in staff who are then forced to take time off work, thus making it a lot harder to meet productivity targets.

Everyone in the workplace owes it to themselves and to their colleagues to keep the place as sanitary as possible. If that means setting aside some time each week or each month for some spot cleaning, make it happen. By putting it off, you’ll only compound the problem.
