How to Forge a Bond During a First Impression

Whether you are arriving at a first date or stepping into an in-person interview, the first seconds of your interaction—the first impression— is critical. Studies have shown that it only takes around one-tenth of a second for a stranger to develop a lasting opinion about your character and personality.

That can seem a little harsh, yet we all do it! It is important to be conscious of what people notice and take this into account prior to introducing yourself. Below we have provided a few tips on how to best prepare yourself in order to forge a meaningful bond within the few moments of that first interaction. The first impression is key.

For your first impression, present yourself with confidence

Within those few seconds of meeting, your confidence will speak louder than your words. Standing tall, giving a firm handshake, and speaking clearly will give the aura of confidence. However, many men and women let their physical appearance affect how they hold themselves in conversation.

Whether it be something universal, like acne or crooked teeth, or something more gender-specific, like male pattern baldness in men, or spider veins in women, most adults have a few insecurities that affect their confidence levels. While these physical “flaws” can feel like the end of the world, keep in mind that impressions are more heavily measured by how well you present yourself, and whether or not you are comfortable in your own skin, rather than your actual appearance.

Put Your Phone Away

Right off the bat, whether you are meeting a future employer or a future lover, splitting your attention with your phone is an immediate turn-off. It does not matter if you are the best multitasker in the world, you are bound to miss something they say, and it will ultimately give them the impression that you think you have better places to be. Alongside coming off as rude, you are limiting yourself in the small talk department.

When you are fully present, you are better able to seize opportunities to ask more personal questions and get to know the other person better. Certain personal subjects that come up can lead to forging that lasting bond. While connecting on a shared interest, you will most likely make it easier for them to remember you in a positive light!

When in doubt, smile

Be sure to smile throughout your first interaction with someone. When you show off your pearly whites you subconsciously put yourself and the other person at ease. It doesn’t hurt that when you smile you are automatically associated with positivity, leading them to want to spend more time around you.

Even babies take a smile into consideration — they are more likely to crawl towards someone who is smiling! This also means it’s extremely important to take care of your teeth: showing some self-love to your teeth will only propel you toward developing higher self-esteem and making a more positive impression. An important note, however— be conscious of over-smiling, this can eventually seem insincere.

So when you are getting ready for your next date or preparing for a big interview, reread through these notes to be sure you’re putting your best foot forward!
