If you have anxiety, you know just how debilitating it can be. Though there are waves on the anxiety spectrum, ranging from slight nerves to an overwhelming sense of dread that makes it difficult to leave your house, anyone who has anxiety could tell you just how hard it is to control and manage. However, this doesn’t mean that there’s no hope for those who struggle on a daily basis. In fact, there are a range of things you can do to help manage anxiety and live a normal life. 1. Learn to become more mindful

One trigger that leads to anxiety is being overwhelmed by a ton of responsibilities. When you have an absurd amount of things to check off on your to-do list, your mind can start racing and be pulled in a million different directions. This not only can lead to stress, but can cause your anxiety levels to increase.

The single most important thing you can do to reduce anxiety is to be more mindful and slow down. Focus on one task at a time and don’t try to multitask and do ten things at once. For example, when you eat, enjoy the food and nothing else: don’t look at your phone, don’t turn on the TV, don’t do any work. Enjoy the simple task of eating. When you do one thing at a time, your life becomes an entire cycle of meditation and causes your entire being to slow down.

2. Declutter your home

Now that you’ve uncluttered your mind, the same goes for your home. Another action item for the anxious involves removing all the junk and clutter in your home that’s built up over the years. The more minimalist you can make your home, the less likely you’ll be to get stressed up over piles of junk. According to House Method, you should start small: remove any expired food from the fridge, get rid of all the junk mail that’s been sitting on your kitchen counter, throw away old receipts, and organize documents in a file folder. After this, organize all of your belongings into three piles: one for keeping, one for donating, and one for throwing away.

I like to use the example of decluttering your closet. Any clothes that have holes can be thrown away, items you haven’t worn in a year can be donated, and the rest of your clothes should be kept. Go around to every room of your house and apply this method.

3. Pick up a task that gets rid of your anxious thoughts

Whether it’s journaling, reading, exercising, or practicing self-care, there are a variety of things you can do to help reduce anxiety. Journaling, in particular, can help you get anxious thoughts out of your head and onto paper. It allows you to spill out all of the feelings you’re experiencing and lets you go deep with your emotions. It also provides a space for you to be vulnerable without being judged.
