5 Ways to Make the Most of Your Singleness
I hate being single. I’m so lonely. Look at all these cute couples at the movies. Why can’t I have a boyfriend? Why can’t I find a girl who loves me for me? I just want to be in a relationship.
Many single people, myself included, tend to have this type of attitude towards our singleness. We treat singleness like it’s some sort of plague that’s stopping us from living our lives to the fullest.
Believing this lie will cause you to become passive and even depressed. Your singleness is not the reason you feel discontent, your attitude toward being single is what is truly responsible for your misery.
Being single is great. There is so much freedom in it. If you’re single, don’t complain or whine, now is your time to live. Now is your time to explore.
Here are a few things you should be doing during your period of singleness:
When you’re single, you have a lot of time on your hands. Rather than using this time to harp on how lonely you are, try using this free time to your advantage.
There’s so much more to life than being in a relationship. Romance is just one part of life and is not worthy of all of your time and energy. Use this valuable time and energy to invest in yourself and do something new.
Take a trip to Brazil. Download Fl Studio and start making music on your laptop. Start a YouTube channel or blog. Create something.
Don’t let this free time go to waste. Embrace this period of your life where you have the freedom to come and go as you please. The freedom to do was you wish. Go. Explore. Create.
Spend Time with Close Friends and Family
The best way to combat the feeling of loneliness that often accompanies being single is to spend time with people. Go out with your friends. Go to conferences, local events, or festivals.
Spend time with the people that care about you the most, only then will you break free from the cycle of self-pity and loneliness that you’re feeling.
Meet New People
As earlier stated, singleness is a period of freedom. During this time you can go out and meet new people with ease. You can go talk to that strange girl walking her dog downtown or that guy you like that works at the burger joint.
Meeting new people will help you forget the plight of your singleness, and might even lead you to the person you want to be with.
Have as much Fun as Possible
You spend this period of your life having as much fun as possible. As a single person, you are likely only responsible for one person: yourself. Because of this fact, you have the freedom to do pretty much whatever you want.
Want to go skydiving? Do it.
Want to search record stores for you favorite Elvis record? Do it.
Want to get a crazy haircut? Do it.
Make the most of your singleness. Enjoy every second of it.
Live in the Present
You’ll never get this period of your life back, so make the most of it. Live in the present rather than harping on the past or dreaming about the future. Right now is the only time you have any control over.
Don’t sit around waiting to find “the one” or to get into your next relationship, instead focus on making the most of today. Cherish this time of your life where you are free to do and accomplish so much.
In closing, I’d like to share an enlightening quote from the Greek playwright Sophocles:
“Tomorrow is tomorrow.
Future cares have future cures,
And we must mind today.”
