Goal setting is one of the most powerful techniques that anyone can use to achieve what they want in their lives. They set goals to buy a new car, to own a luxury bungalow house by the sea, to build a multi-million dollar business, to travel the world, and to help those who are in need.  There is no doubt that writing down what you want is a remarkable strategy to achieve it, but there is a huge problem, which is—most people who write down their goals fail to achieve them. Here are ten reasons why people fail.

“The victory of success is half won when one gains the habit of setting and achieving goals.” – Og Mandino

And if this is happening to you, don’t worry. Find out the reasons you fail to achieve your goals, and then come up with a solution to combat them. Here are 10 most common reasons people fail at their goals. Which one likely describes you the most?

  1. They Lose Their Desire and Motivation

Feeling no motivation to work on your goals? Well, this is a very normal situation that can happen. Even the most successful people in the world have days when they feel no motivation and have no desire to do things.

While it is true that motivation plays an important role in achieving your goals, you cannot solely depend on motivation alone. Successful people are successful because they are willing to do the work regardless of whether they feel like it or not.

You have to understand that motivation is feeling. And feeling comes and goes. This is why sometimes you feel motivated and sometimes not. Rather than depending on motivation, make it a habit. Turn your execution plan into your habit. This way, you don’t have to rely on motivation to get the work done.

  1. They Have No Idea How to Do It

This is another common reason people are unable to accomplish their goals. They simply don’t know how to do it. For example, you want to build a side income on the internet. But you are a complete newbie who has no idea how the internet works. So it is highly likely that you will fail at your goals because of your lack of know-how or information.

Success requires knowledge, and you need to know how to do it to execute according to your plan. Therefore, find out how to achieve the goals you want.

For instance, you can look for a mentor, ask someone who has done it before, get someone to teach you, read a book about it, check out the solutions on Google, attend a class, etc. There are many things you can do, but whatever you do, you must have a solid plan to act on.

  1. They Are Not Taking Enough Action

Everyone is guilty of not taking action. And this is truly the most common answer to a failed goal. Many people set big goals, but the problem is that they are not willing to put in the effort or work on their goals.

Action is the bridge that connects your goals and your reality. If you are not doing anything at all, do not expect that money will fall from the sky and go into your bank account. This is not going to happen. Even if you want to win the lottery, you need to go and buy a ticket.

And stop looking for quick-strategy or plans that require no work at all. Do you know why people are still buying into the get-rich-quick scheme? The answer is because people are just lazy and they wish to get a shortcut rather than work on their goals.

Never let this happen to you. The answer to achieving your goals is to work on it, day-in and day-out. And there is no shortcut.

  1. They Follow the Wrong Strategy

No matter how fast you run, if you keep running west, there is no way you can see the sunrise. Your strategy to achieve your goals is a vital part that you should not ignore. And most people thought that to achieve their goals, they just need to work harder.

This is only true to a certain extent. The strategy you need to earn $100,000 a year and to earn $10 million a year is completely different. For instance, if you are working on a salary-based job and earning $5,000 a month, there is no way you can earn $10 million a year no matter how much effort or time you put in.

You need a different strategy. So ask yourself if your strategy is viable. And if your answer is a no, find out a better strategy and come up with another plan that can get you the result you desire.

  1. They Feel Overwhelmed

When you feel like you have too much to handle, you can never get the most important work done. Sometimes, people fail to achieve their goals because they feel overwhelmed and end up paralyzed with inaction.

It is impossible to achieve 100 goals within a year. You have to focus and choose the few important goals that you truly want to accomplish and work on them. The same goes for your day-to-day activity. Choose to work on the important ones that will give you the most result rather than working on everything.

A very good solution is to follow the Pareto 80/20 Rule. Find out the 20% works that give you 80% of the results, and focus on accomplishing them.

  1. They Have No Commitment and Accountability

Why do you want to achieve your goals? If your answer is not emotional or empowering enough, there is a high chance that you may fail to achieve your goals. The reason is that your purpose behind your goals determines your commitment level and accountability.

When there is no commitment, it is easy for you to procrastinate, find excuses, or simply not take action. However, when you are 100% committed to achieving your goals, you will do whatever it takes to make sure that you are on track.

Thus, give yourself a strong and emotional reason why you want to achieve your goals. If you have no idea why you want to do it in the first place, you will never work on it when things become tough.

  1. They Lost Focus and Get Distracted

A lot of people set their goals early, but as the day progresses, they slowly get distracted and lose their focus. And eventually, they forget about their goals and never do anything about them.

Another common reason is that people are often distracted by the “next shiny object” syndrome. You can clearly see this when people are switching from one business to another or jumping from the “right” opportunity to another.

Always remember your goals and never get distracted. The moment you get distracted, you will lose your focus. And when you lose your focus, you will also lose your energy and motivation.

  1. They Don’t Know How to Handle Failures

Never underestimate the importance of failures. In fact, failures are necessary if you want to hit your goals. There will be no success without failure. It is the stepping stone to your success. You learn the most when you fail.

The problem is that most people do not know how to handle their failures. When they fail to produce the result they desire, most people will choose to either quit and give up, or they choose to work harder and repeat the whole process again. Guess what? If you repeatedly do the same thing again and again, you will end up getting the same result.

A better way to handle failure is to treat it as feedback and find out what went wrong and where you can improve. This way, you can learn and do better in your next attempt.

  1. They Set the Wrong Goals

Yes, many people set the wrong goals. They set goals that they don’t really want. Perhaps, they set goals that other people want them to achieve, but not themselves. Has this happened to you before?

For example, your family members and friends may encourage you to become a doctor because they think that you have the skill and you like the subject, but deep down in your heart, that is not what you really want. And because of their influence, you set the wrong goal to become a doctor.

When this happens, it will be difficult to come up with motivation and you may even feel miserable after you have accomplished your goal. So make sure you set the goals that you truly want. Ask yourself from the bottom of your heart and listen to your inner voice.

  1. They Quit and Give Up

A winner will never quit and a quitter will never win. The reason why people fail to achieve their goals only when they quit and give up. As long as you continue to strive and move forward, you are never a failure.

Sometimes it may take longer than you have planned to achieve your goals, but if you are making progress each day, you will eventually arrive. Hence, do not quit or give up. Continue to work on your goals. You can change your strategy, but never your goals.
