7 Common Reasons People Fail to Achieve Goals and What to Do
Do you set but fail to achieve goals? If this is what is happening to you, don’t worry, because it happens to most people. You see, setting your goal is one thing, and achieving it is another.
A lot of people understand the power of goal setting, but still, they fail to realize the power it brings that can change their lives.
Goal setting is definitely a very powerful tool that is freely available for anyone to use. The problem with most people is that they thought that all they need to do is just to write down what they want and their goals will magically appear.
If you are serious about achieving your goals, you need to do more than just writing down what you want. And more importantly, you must avoid the common pitfalls that most people fall into.
Here are the 7 most common reasons why people fail to achieve goals and what you can do about them. If you find yourself making any of these mistakes, stop and make a course-correction immediately.T
1. They overestimate their abilities
Just like what Bill Gates, one of the richest men in this world has to say:
“Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.”
Yes, when it comes to living the life that we desire, everyone wants the best. They want to earn a million dollars or run a multi-million dollars business within a year.
Most people fail to realize that they need time, patience, and more importantly, the right resources to achieve the big goals. It is not to say that it is impossible to earn a million dollars in a year, but you have to consider your own abilities.
If you want to achieve a big goal, you must first develop the right character, build the right habits, and give it enough time to materialize.
Remember, there is no such thing as an overnight success. If you want something big and bold, you need to sacrifice your time, learn, improve, and pay the price to get there.
Thus, don’t overestimate your capabilities. At the same time, do not underestimate what you can do over the long-term. Have more patience, my friend.
2. They don’t know how to achieve their goals
Another common reason people fail to achieve their goals is that they have no idea how to achieve what they want.
Many people want to be financially independent, yet, they have no idea what they need to do to get there.
Worse, a lot of people set their goals and they don’t formulate a plan. When you don’t have a plan, you become part of other people’s plan.
You will feel lost and have no idea what to do each day to make progress to reach your goals. This is why having a plan is important.
The old saying, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail,” is just so right. Hence, find out what you need to do to achieve your goals. Create a plan.
And if you have no idea what you can do, just search. Buy and read books. Attend seminars and workshops to learn how to do it. You can also just ask those who have accomplished what you want. Get their advice and then create your own plan to get there.
3. They are not committed
Do you know that wishing to achieve your goals and being committed to achieving your goals are two different things?
You see, most people wish to achieve their goals. They wish to live a better lifestyle and they wish that they have a million dollars in the bank.
The problem is that wishing is not enough. You have to be absolutely committed to achieving your goals. Only then you will be willing to put in the hard work, to go through the tough times, and to persist when everything fails.
When your goals are just a mere wish, you will give up as soon as you hit a roadblock or when you face difficulties in achieving them.
On the other hand, when you are absolutely committed to achieving your goals, you will do whatever it takes to reach them.
This is the difference between someone successful and someone who is not. Therefore, switch your mentality and operate from “wish” to absolutely “committed.”
When you put in 100% commitment and make your goals a must-achieve, things will start to change. And reaching your goals will then be a matter of time.
4. They quit and give up way too soon
This is another common reason people fail at their goals. They give up way too soon. You have to understand that a winner will never quit and a quitter will never win.
The moment you choose to give up and do something else, that’s the moment you fail. As long as you don’t give up and you keep on trying, you will somehow get to the destination that you desire.
This is especially true for big success. Something worthwhile to achieve requires time. But sadly, most people give up before they are able to create significant results in their journey.
I’m here to tell you to persist and to have the determination to continue on. When you face challenges and difficulties along your journey, hustle and don’t give up.
Just like what Michael Jordan said, “If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” Whatever you do, don’t give up.
5. They don’t take consistent action
Do you know that you can achieve any goal you want if you are willing to be consistent with your action?
What you do on a daily basis is more important than what you do once in a while.
Remember, in the confrontation between the stream and the rock; the stream always wins, not through strength, but by perseverance.
Aristotle once said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” Yes, success requires you to build the right habits so that you can take action and work on your goals each day.
It is unlikely that you are going to reach your goals within a day. It takes time. And this is why consistent action matters.
The majority of people want an immediate result and they want to be successful quickly. They want to achieve their goals within a short time frame. This is why they take action for just a few days or at most a few weeks. And when they don’t get the results they want, they quit and choose to do something else.
Do you know that Rome was not built in a day? And that Warren Buffett did not become a billionaire within months? It took him years for the compound effect to kick in. His portfolio grew slowly but consistently over the years. And before long, he has built his to over a billion.
So take consistent action. You can slow down, but you can’t stop. As long as you are taking one small step each day, eventually, you will still reach your goals.
6. They get distracted and lost focus
What happened to most people is that they are often distracted. They decided to start a blog and to build their blog. But after a couple of weeks, they discovered something better and decided to start an e-commerce website instead.
This is what is happening to most people when it comes to achieving their goals. They get distracted easily and lost focus. And when they do, they either stop doing the necessary work or they start another new project.
We are living in a noisy world where everything is so accessible and convenient for us. And because we can access technology and get connected easily, we are always being bombarded with advertisements and distractions.
This is why you should not just write down your goals, you need to do more than that. Review your goals and your plans on a daily basis.
Make sure you remind yourself of what you want to accomplish and always keep your eyes on your goals.
Whatever is out of your sight will be out of your mind. So create visual triggers such as vision boards to help you stay connected with your goals all the time.
7. Their goals are not exciting enough
Finally, a lot of people fail to reach their goals because they set a goal that is not exciting enough.
Think about it, will your goals make you jump out of your bed each morning? Are your goals so exciting that you look forward to achieving them?
If you don’t, you know that your goals are not exciting enough. And you need to improve them. Make your goals as exciting as possible so that the moment you think about them, you are absolutely motivated to take action right away.
Try to connect your goals with your emotions. And dig deeper into the reasons why you want to achieve them.
Steve Jobs, the late founder of Apple said it wisely:
“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
Therefore, align your goals with your passion. When you fall in love with your goals and the progress, you will never run out of motivation.
These are the 7 most common reasons people fail to achieve their goals. Are you making any of these mistakes?
