Get Your Home Office in A Mindful Setting

It’s a calming and fulfilling practice that many people all over the world fell in love with and try to do every day. Just as it helps you calm down, it also helps you focus. And it’s no wonder a great number of people began applying mindfulness principles to other areas of life, namely their jobs. If you’re looking for ways to be more productive when working from home, we’ll help you achieve that goal by giving you a few tips to make your home office more mindful.

Be punctual

It’s important to be punctual, even if you work from home and getting to your office actually means walking to your spare bedroom and turning the computer on. Make a habit of being punctual. To help you follow through on your decision, place a big clock on the wall you’re facing. Yes, we all have clocks on our computers and phones. But a big, old-fashioned clock will help you keep track of time. You can use the clock to meditate: count the seconds and breathe deeply. Breathing meditations are a great way to calm down and relax.  And, after that, you can focus on the task at hand.

Be prepared

When you’re in a hurry and you need to write something down, you can improvise and write it with an eyebrow pencil on your wrist, or with a children’s glitter gel pen on a piece of paper torn from an old notebook. But that’s not exactly professional and makes finding these important notes later on rather difficult. Your office should be well equipped, but you don’t have to spend a fortune to do it: you can easily find affordable office supplies and get enough post-its, markers, pens, and document trays to make you feel like you can tackle any important task and meet any deadline. Being well prepared will also ease your anxiety because you’ll know that you won’t run out of ink in your printer or staplers in the middle of an important task.

Declutter

When we can’t focus, everything seems to be drawing our attention: post-it notes, family photos on our desk, crumbs and specks of dust… In order to avoid this, you should make an effort and keep all your things in order. This doesn’t mean that you have to embrace minimalism and throw out family photos and a flower pot from your desk, but everything needs to have its place so you can easily find what you’re looking for when you’re in a hurry. Drawer dividers will help you keep your drawers in order. Storage boxes with your old files should be lined up neatly against the wall and clearly labeled. And all your pens and pencils should be kept in jars or cans and not scattered around.

Privacy

There isn’t a person who can work while constantly being interrupted no matter how good they are at multitasking. Your office should be a private space where you can work uninterrupted and won’t be bothered by noise. If you don’t have a separate room but work from your living room, for example, you can use portable screens to shield yourself and your work area from other activities in your home. What is more, you can opt for divider walls that can serve as bookcases at the same time, which will make organizing your files and boxes much easier.

Consider your feelings

Think about how your home office makes you feel. Do you enjoy being there? Does the noise level or the light bother you? Can you concentrate and be productive or are you frustrated because of a number of seemingly insignificant things such as sunlight or temperature? Keep your desk by the window for more natural light but keep it closed if the outside noise bothers you. Do you feel better when it’s colder or do you work best when it’s hot? The best thing about working from home is that you can set your ideal work conditions. So don’t hesitate to make small changes which will make you feel good while working.

Mindfulness is a wonderful practice that’s slowly being integrated into our everyday life. And everyone from kindergarten children to company employees can benefit from it. By embracing kindness and accepting yourself as you are, you are able to find peace within. When you make your home office a more mindful space, you’ll become more productive and satisfied with the results of your work.
