Top CEOs do it, top athletes swear by it, anyone famous worth their name does meditation in some form or the other. So, what is it that makes meditation such an instant hit amongst both celebrities and ascetics?

Let’s start with the benefits of meditation

Relieves stress: There is not just physical stress that you have to deal with. The mental stress is what kills us first. Over the years, multiple studies have found that meditation results in decreased heart and breathing rates, decrease in oxygen consumption, decrease in blood lactate levels (stress indicator), and increase in alpha brain waves. All in all, it helps in developing a positive outlook towards life in general.

Makes you more attentive by re-focusing: When you meditate every morning before the day takes over your time and attention, it helps in rewiring the brain. It is like getting brain reboot every morning. Attention spans are increased as a result. The focus is sharpened. You are more attentive. Medical science proves that meditation for at least four days in succession leads to improved attention spans.

Helps in getting over addictions: The chief cause of dependencies is often emotional. Meditation lowers the stress hormone cortisol, increases interleukin levels, and boosts the body’s ability to clear itself of toxins. This helps in quitting an addiction, along with heaps of will power.

Improves your sleep: According to a study that compared two meditation groups, out of which one practices meditation and other didn’t; participants who meditated reported being able to fall asleep sooner, as compared to those who didn’t. It relaxes your body, releases tensions, and puts you in a peaceful state of mind, which leads to better sleep.

Can decrease blood pressure: Meditation reduces high blood pressure, as per a study of 996 volunteers, which found that when people meditated on a silent mantra, it resulted in lowered blood pressure by about five points. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder, which leads to reduced heart function. It also leads to atherosclerosis, which is narrowing down of arteries. This condition can potentially lead to heart attacks and strokes.

By relaxing nerve signals that coordinate heart function, the tension in blood vessels decreases. This leads to controlled blood pressure.

6. Improves self-awareness: Meditation helps you develop a better understanding of yourself. This is called self-awareness. You become more aware of your thoughts. So naturally, you are quick to recognize ideas that are harmful or negative. You can affect a course correction and direct your thoughts towards useful things.

7. Improves emotional health: Meditation helps in improving self-image, and thus, affects the emotional well-being of a person. Two independent studies proved that meditation resulted in decreased depression in over 4,600 adults. Another study compared electrical activity between the brains of people who practiced meditation and those who didn’t.

How to meditate?

Sit or lie down comfortably. Then close your eyes. Breathe naturally and observe your breathing first, and then your thoughts. Do not attempt to control your thoughts or react to them. Observe them, and watch them pass, as if you were watching a movie. As you keep breathing at a natural pace, notice your body movement. Start with your chest, shoulders, rib cage, belly, thighs, and feet. If you face distractions, bring your focus back to the breath, and you will feel the calmness once again.

If you feel the need for expert help, you can enlist the help of meditation and mindfulness experts in Australia, who will guide you with the proper technique and method.

    Excellent post.

One thing I have noticed about certain sites is that, even though they have tons of content, the site looks great and the headlines are eye catching is that the material is simply filler. It’s downright unreadable. You can forget it 6 seconds after you read it. Not the case with your post though, really enjoyed it reading it and it held my attention all the way through! Keep it up.
