Reframing Negative Thoughts Into Positive Ones

I recently drove alone to a family event in PA, 5 hours back and forth (with an overnite in between).  The time on the road gave me the opportunity to listen to some very wonderful books on tape that I got from the library.  I’ve been hearing about Wayne Dyer’s The Power of Intention from clients for a while now, so it was great to finally get to hear it.  This book is so densely packed with wisdom and transformational ideas, I know I could listen to it 30 more times over the next year and get something useful out of each time. That’s the way I seem to be learning these days.  It might be different for you.

In any event, I want to share with you one idea I took from, called “matching.”  The idea is to “match” your inner self-talk to the energy of intention and possibility, rather than to the energy of impossibility and despair (which is how it often shows up).  So, for example, when you witness your self-talk sounding like this:
“I’m out of shape and I look terrible,”
you can shift into saying to yourself,
“My intention is to be as healthy and fit as I can be.”

You can go from,
“I just don’t have enough time for everything!”
to
“I’m sharpening and clarifying my priorities so that I am very intentional about how I spend my time.”

From
“I’ll never have enough money to start my own business”
to
“My intention is to start my business on the side and grow it into something I can do full time.”

The idea of changing negative self-messaging into affirming self-talk is not new, but Dyer’s facility with it, his ability to articulate it, and his examples are extraordinary.

I know from my own experience and from what clients report, making a habit of translating negative internal statements into statements of intention or possibility is nothing short of life-changing. It happens slowly and gradually.  Your moments of choice and power come in humble ways and on ordinary Tuesday mornings when you’re in your car.  But make no mistake — learning to translate or “match” your self talk to the energy of intention can transform your life, one tiny moment at a time.
