By Ellie Nieves –
The thought of stepping into a leadership role often intimidates women. But in today’s economy shying away from the limelight is no longer an option. In fact, stepping into a leadership role is necessary to ensure success and longevity in your career. You can begin to carve out your leadership niche in 3 steps if you Show Up, Speak Up and Step Up. Here’s how:
1) Show Up: If you want to get ahead in your career, you have to be seen. People need to know who you are and what you bring to the table. Especially if you’re new to your organization, it’s important that you make it a priority to show up on time for meetings, attend the company picnic, set up lunch dates with key members of your organization, etc. Showing up will allow you to become better known by your peers and superiors.
2) Speak Up: In the workplace, being seen is only half the battle. The other half is being heard. When you participate in a meeting, read the agenda before the meeting and show up prepared to make insightful and valuable recommendations that will move projects forward. Having a voice in your organization is important if you want to make a positive impression on key stakeholders.
3) Step Up: Many women in the workplace think that if they work “hard enough” at their current jobs that they will be noticed and eventually promoted. The reality is that working hard on your current assignments is not enough. Assess your competencies and volunteer for more challenging assignments that will highlight your skills and capabilities. Not only will your work be commended if you do a good job, but your ability to step up when needed will be rewarded.
If you follow these 3 Leadership Strategies, it is likely that you will not only make valuable contributions to your work team, but that you will also begin to carve out a larger leadership role for yourself within your organization.
