What is Cannabidiol?

CBD or cannabidiol is one of the many chemical compounds aka cannabinoids that are found naturally in the cannabis family of plants (including hemp and marijuana). Over the years, there has been a lot of research that CBD oil could help relieve anxiety, stress, pain, and many other conditions.

When you supplement using CBD, you are stimulating the production of anandamide. It also avoids the FAAH (fatty acid amide hydrolase) from washing down this super important cannabinoid. All and all, more anandamide leads to less anxiety.

Furthermore, CBD is believed to improve the production of serotonin which is a neurotransmitter responsible for making you ‘feel good’. You can think of it as a natural mood elevator. While we need more studies to stipulate what else CBD can do and its exact working mechanism, the evidence available so far sounds promising.

What Do the Research and Evidence Have To Say?

For GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder)

NIDA has found CBD to be of help when it comes to managing generalized anxiety disorder or GAD. The studies performed on rats in this regard were promising.

The subjects were observed for all the behavioral signs of anxiety. Upon administration of CBD, many of those symptoms improved. For example, the heart rate had normalized.

We need more research and human trials concerning CBD’s effects on GAD.

Other Forms of Anxiety

Other than generalized anxiety disorder, Cannabidiol’s regular administration might supposedly help with other anxiety types like social anxiety and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). In some cases, it may help with anxiety-induced insomnia as well.

Other than managing anxiety, CBD has also been studied for its effectiveness in managing other neurological disorders. For example, this 2017 review on CBD oil’s effect on psychiatric disorders conducted that there wasn’t enough evidence to establish cannabidiol as a treatment for effectively managing depression.

However, the reviewers did notice that Cannabidiol could potentially help in effectively managing anxiety disorders.

However, the study was not controlled; meaning the participants were not compared against a separate group that might have been given a different treatment or placebo (no treatment at all).

Once again, reviews like these call for a strong need to conduct human trials before we can fully understand how CBD works in its entirety. We also need more research to establish an ideal dosage, the right method of administration, and potential side-effects.

Another neurological disorder in which CBD has shown great promise is schizophrenia. Check out this study to know more. As far as side-effects are concerned, so far, there haven’t been any major side-effects noted in this realm. Moreover, the effects can’t nearly be as threatening as those posed by regular over-the-counter medication and drugs.

Lastly, CBD has gone into making the first-ever cannabidiol based drug designed to treat epilepsy. It’s called epidiolex. This is the first FDA-approved drug derived from CBD to ever hit the market.

CBD Dosage

If you think CBD could be a potential route in effectively managing your anxiety, be sure to talk to your doctor first. Talking with a doctor might help you find the right dosage; the one that’s safe and is likely to hit the sweet spot for you.

In most of the studies that have been conducted so far, it was observed that people who received a dose of 300 mg, 90 minutes before the test were able to significantly reduce their signs and symptoms of anxiety.

You will need to look at a lot of factors before you could truly establish a dose that works for you. For example, you will need to consider the product you’re using, the method of application, your experience with CBD, expectations, etc.

It might take a while for you to understand how CBD works in your case before you can establish an ideal dose for yourself.

How To Manage Your Anxiety With CBD Oil

Different doses work for different people. And while different individuals prefer their way, the most common method remains taking a few drops sublingually either in the morning or in the evening. If you need it for managing panic attacks, a vape pen might be the best bet for you because CBD will be absorbed much more quickly via the lungs when you vape it rather than ingesting it.

If you are using it for GAD, then a few drops in your edibles might be the best option. The best way to get the most out of your dose is to drop it under your tongue and hold it for 30 seconds. Alternatively, you can also add CBD to your favorite beverage like coffee, tea, and juices.
